D ear St. Anne parishioners, Our Winter Social is just around the corner. Last year we had just

shy of 250 parishioners and friends attending. In this past week, the registrations have been coming in, and we’re now close to 170 registered. We’ve been talking a lot about discipleship these past weeks, since this is Saint Mark’s focus in the beginning chapters of his Gospel. I’d like you to think of the Winter Social as an opportunity for discipleship, so that you clear your calendar and make it a priority to attend. Notwithstanding the fact that you’ll have an enjoyable evening and perhaps make some new friends, the Winter Social is like most things that involve parish life: it’s not so much about what you’ll get out of it, as what you can put into it. And the more that you put into it, the more you will experience the joy of intentionally offering something to Christ. So, stop putting it off, and get yourself registered this week and invite your friends to do the same! The Social is a once-a-year opportunity to build up our community, especially through a deeper friendship with other parishioners in Christ. I look forward to seeing you there! With my prayers and gratitude, Fr. Bob Authority from God According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Not only did he enjoy playing with his fellow third grad-ers, but he knew that he’d have a warm meal every day. But during the summer, Derek and hundreds of other schoolchildren faced weeks without a reliable source of nutrition with school lunch programs shut down. Thanks to the efforts of the local Catholic Charities agency, Derek and over 1,000 other stu-dents were able to access healthy and affordable food over the summer months.
