Third Sunday of Lent

We give the definition of ourselves over to so many things. We allow

our society, friends, family, work, social groups, ethnicity, and even

institutions define, classify, and color how we perceive ourselves.

When we listen predominantly to the voices of others, we lose touch

with what is happening within our own inner voice. If we listen carefully

within, we can easily discover that we are in want and need. We know

our incompleteness and also know that loneliness, sadness, and self-

images can propel us outward in attempts to fill those gaps. We can

become not only victims of our own prejudices but can find ourselves

overly self-indulgent in things that can only satisfy for a short time, if at

all.

It is no wonder that money and power are things that are so fervently

sought after. As long as we can keep a steady supply going, the

illusion of fulfillment and satisfaction can falsely persuade us as craftily

as a master magician’s act. We live with illusions not truth. It is no

wonder, then, that some of the wealthiest folks are also really the

unhappiest. Whether we admit it, the lies we live and pursue will

ultimately expose our superficiality. We all have to wrestle with who we

are and what gives our lives purpose and meaning. Learn to listen

more deeply, not to what others are saying about you, but to what God

is echoing in your heart.

We can easily get confused and misunderstand, not only about who

we are but who God is. Even the disciples and the Samaritan woman

at the well missed the point Jesus was trying to make. There is only

one Person who can satisfy the deepest yearnings and longings of our

hearts — Jesus the Messiah. It is not the work of corporate America

that will lead us to happiness or greatness but the work of the soul. We

continue to resist acknowledging this and are happier in our world of

misunderstanding and illusion. The life-giving water we truly need

doesn’t come from the source of a well but from the Source of Life.

Only God can reveal the truth of our sinfulness, the superficiality of our

pursuits, and the illusions we hold so dear. Only Jesus can save us

from ourselves and give us what we really need. If only our heads can

catch up with where our hearts know they need to be, then will we find

real contentment and life!

CONFESSING SINS

Question:

If I go to the Sacrament of Penance and end up repeating the same sins, does that mean I do not have a strong enough intention to amend my life?

Answer:

There is a popular expression that says, “Be patient. God isn’t finished with me yet!” Growing in faith and holiness is an ongoing, life-long project, and

our struggle with sin is at the heart of it. As St. Paul says, the good he intends to do, he does not do. The evil he does not intend, he does! It is not

always a lack of intention, but more often the allure of evil that makes it difficult to change. When we confess our sins, we are to come with a fully

contrite heart. You need to reflect on your true feelings toward your actions before approaching the sacrament. After confession, there are strategies

you can make to avoid falling into the same traps of sin. First, pray for and seek out strength and perseverance through multiple sacraments,

charitable work, and personal sacrifice. Second, avoid occasions of sin when you might fail or be sorely tempted. In doing these things, remind

yourself daily that it is a spiritual war we wage, and with God’s grace, we will succeed. © LPi

YOUTH MINISTRY

Theology in the County - at the Warehouse in Caribou (Ages

18 & up, up, up)

Theology in the County provides an opportunity for Catholic fellowship in

a casual forum where adults (ages 18+) gather for challenging and

relevant presentations on our faith and how it applies to daily life. It

gives adults the opportunity to network with one another and be part of

the larger Catholic community that extends beyond their Parish setting.

Each session will begin with a social followed by a presentation given by

a guest speaker and time for an informal discussion and Q&A.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVE

Dear Friends,

Continuation of Bishop’s Deeley’s report to the Holy Father.

In order for parishes to be viable, they must be financially sound. We

will continue our efforts to help parishes to achieve that condition.

Having the Chancery provide administrative assistance in financial

management has been a program of the diocese for the last few years.

We will expand that as needed. We will also continue our efforts to

assist in augmenting the offertory collection which is the main financial

support of our parishes.

A priority for the future, as it has been for these years, is the increase of

vocations to priesthood and religious life. The statistics are clear and

stark. The religious women in the diocese are no longer young. I am

working to engage a community with younger sisters to establish an

apostolate in Maine. I am convinced there are young women with

vocations. The groups meeting regularly for discernment indicate the

interest. A younger community would help younger women to see

themselves as part of religious life.

Likewise, we must continue to prioritize vocations to the priesthood. We

are blessed with eight young men currently in the seminary. In addition,

our vocation director has both supported and established parish-based

discernment groups with the cooperation of the priests and has

continued to offer programs and retreats for men who show an interest

in service to the Church in the ministry of priesthood. He is the contact

person for those wanting to talk about priesthood. He maintains an

extensive list of men whom he contacts on a regular basis with

invitations to retreats, discussions, and diocesan events which focus on

priesthood (Chrism Mass, ordinations, etc.). The Totus Tuus program

will be expanded this summer to include almost double the number of

participants from last year. This is a means of introducing our young to

the possibility of vocation as they experience Church together and learn

more about their faith.
