But Jesus neither leaps from the parapet nor comes down from the cross, descending instead into death’s abyss, trusting, not testing the Father and inviting us to do likewise. Third Temptation: Jesus is offered ‘all the kingdoms of the world’ in exchange for prostrating in worship before the Devil. Instead, Jesus prostrates in Gethsemane before his Father’s will, as the disciples will prostrate before the Risen Jesus when not only worldly kingdoms but ‘all power in heaven and on earth’ are given to him. Thus, in stark contrast to Adam and Eve, Jesus is obedient. St. Paul contrasts Adam’s bequest - sin, condemnation, death - with Jesus’ abundant free gifts of righteousness, acquittal and life. The Gospel of St. Matthew 4: 1-11

Reflection The Tempter does not blatantly invite Adam and Eve, Jesus, or us, to do evil but, more innocently, to bypass elusive intangibles (sacrifice, trust, God) for immediately real alternatives (food, security, power.)

First Temptation: Jesus’ obedience consists in refusing to provide bread for himself alone. Later, Jesus feeds the multitudes and offers himself as living bread to all, bidding us who eat it to feed the hungry. But ‘not on bread alone.’ How unhelpful, ultimately, are material and technical aid unaccompanied by spiritual values.

Second Temptation: The devil’s ‘If you are God’s Son’ on the temple parapet is repeated by passers-by as Jesus hangs on the Cross.

But though Jesus banishes the Devil today, ‘Be off, Satan,’ we need Lent’s ministering angels to keep us faithful to Jesus’ path of obedient trust in God’s providential care, Jesus’ sacrificial service of others.

Two kinds of happiness?

“The Philosopher [that is, Aristotle], in placing man’s

happiness in this life (Ethic. i, 10), says it is imperfect, and

after a long discussion concludes: We call men happy, but

only as men. But God has promised us perfect happiness,

when we shall be as the angels … in heaven (St. Matthew.

22: 30.”

Saint Thomas Aquinas, informed by both natural reason and

Christian revelation, acknowledges that we strive for a

twofold happiness: 1) an imperfect happiness while here on

earth and 2) a perfect happiness consisting of the Beatific

Vision of the Uncreated Good (i.e., God) in heaven.

St. Augustine expressed this so beautifully, writing, “Our

hearts are restless until they rest in you.” The “you,” refers

to God, the ultimate source of every good thing. Of course,

we cannot obtain complete union with God until we reach

heaven. In a most important sense, St. Thomas’s end in

writing the entire Samma Theologica is to help us obtain

that final, perfect, eternal bliss with God. But what are we to

do in the meanwhile, as travellers here on the earth?

“According to the Philosopher (Ethic. I, 9), happiness is the

reward of works of virtue.” So then, to attain some measure

of happiness on earth, we have got some work cut out for us -

and the same applies to perfect happiness in Heaven. As

Jesus himself declared, “If you know these things, you shall

be blessed if you do them” (St. John 13:17). There are things

we need to know and to do - there is a place for faith and a

place for works - to attain some happiness on earth and

perfect, blessed happiness in Heaven. Virtues are

perfections of our God-given powers as human beings. To

understand virtue we must understand those powers. Got a

minute for Saint Thomas Aquinas to spell out the nature of

our human nature? Very good then as it continues next

week.

Star of the Week

(week ending Friday, 24

February 2017)

Rupert Hull in Year 4 was ‘Star of the Week’.

During Paired Reading sessions Rupert

consistently records his observations of his

partner’s reading in a very detailed and mature

manner. He has this week produced an in depth

evaluation of his partner’s ‘next steps’, impressing

all of the teachers with his ability to reflect in a

perceptive way. We all agreed that Rupert is a

very worthy recipient of ‘Star of the Week’. Well

done, Rupert!
