First Sunday of Advent and Solemnity of the Immaculate ConceptionOn this first Sunday of Advent, we begin our preparations for the celebration of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. We hear about the need to be prepared for Christ’s coming.

Christ’s mother, Mary, who was born without sin, loved and served God throughout her lifetime. She gave life to Jesus and then accompanied him on his journey. On this feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s immaculate conception, we hear how she had prepared to serve God. She was awake and ready.

We must also be awake and ready to say yes to God’s will. Just as Mary walked with Jesus in his journey, let us also stay close to Our Mother and serve God as readily as she did.

Amen? Amen!

BASILICA OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONOur parish will participate in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, before its 100th anniversary. The holy day collection for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception will be earmarked and given as St. Cecilia’s gift for the dome’s completion. Known as America’s Catholic church, the National Shrine has been a century in the making, built by and for the faithful of our great nation in honor of our Blessed Mother, the patroness of the United States. Become a part of Mary’s shrine and help to bring to completion our Church! For more information, please visit www.trinitydome.org.

Our annual Giving Tree Program has begun! All parishioners are invited to participate by selecting an ornament(s) from the tree and purchasing gifts for those who are in need this Christmas. Additional information about the

organizations our parish will be assisting this year can be found under the tree.

Gifts should be returned to the church by noon on Sunday, December 10, so they can be delivered to the organizations and distributed on time for Christmas! Please return your gift unwrapped or in a gift bag and place it by the tree located on the St. Joseph altar. Gift card purchases should be returned to the gift card box under the tree with the ornament securely attached to the card or in one of the envelopes provided for the organization. To assist us with keeping your gift card purchases secure, please limit your gift card returns to the weekend Masses only when the cards can be collected immediately.

Thanks to all who are able to participate and purchase gifts this year. Your donations are greatly appreciated by these organizations who work to bring everyday necessities and Christmas to the individuals and families that they serve!

k New Christmas Mass Schedule: We will have two Masses on Christmas Eve, 3 PM and 5 PM, as well as at midnight on Christmas morning and 10 AM on Christmas day. There will be no 8 AM Mass on Christmas.

Credo (I Believe)Why does the liturgy repeat itself every year?

Just as we celebrate a birthday or a wedding anniversary each year, so too does the liturgy celebrate the most important

events in Christian salvation history over the course of the year. With one important difference, however: All time is

God’s time. “Memories” of Jesus’ life and teaching are simultaneous encounters with the living God.

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once said, “Either we are contemporaries of Jesus, or we can have nothing at

all to do with it.” Following the Church year in faith makes us indeed contemporaries of Jesus. Not because we can imagine

ourselves so precisely as part of his time and his life, but rather because he comes into my time and my life, if I make room for

him in this way, with his healing and forgiving presence, with the explosive force of his Resurrection.

A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams

MARK 13:33-37

“Be watchful! You do not know when the lord of the house is coming.”

Thanksgiving has come and gone; and Christmas will soon

be upon us. In fact, in just a few weeks we could very well

end up sitting here in a pew thinking, “I can’t believe it’s

Christmas Eve already. What happened to Advent?”

With the words at the beginning of today’s Gospel,

Jesus calls us to attention, “Be watchful! Be alert!” He goes

on to teach us about Christian readiness for his second

coming at the end of time. We don’t know at what hour of

what day that will happen, but God has revealed that it will

indeed happen, and that the fulfillment of his Kingdom will

be ushered in by the final judgment. If we live as worthy

followers of Christ, loving God by following his command-

ments, we have only to look forward to that day in joyful

expectation, never fear.

God is giving us the weeks between now and Christmas

to prepare for his coming. There are so many things we can

take advantage of so as not to be caught off guard. Above

all we have the opportunity to approach each day with a

renewed spirit of expectation, being hopeful that one day

we will meet the Lord face to face. Let us be confident in the

fact that the God who loves us so much as to become one of

us will also make available to us in this life all the graces he

knows we need to be with him forever.

Pensamientos EvangélicosEl Señor viene para salvarnos. Aprovechemos estos

días de adviento para prepararnos por este encuentro.(The Lord is coming to save us. Let us take full advantage

of these days to prepare ourselves.)

Here’s a great Christmas gift idea: A ticket to the Cincinnati Men’s Conference on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Taft Theatre. A faith-filled day where men from all over the region can enjoy Catholic inspiration and spiritual growth. Featured speak-ers include Fr. Mitch Pacwa of EWTN, Fr. Larry Richards, founder of the Reason For Hope Founda-tion, and Gerry Faust, former head football coach of Moeller High School and University of Notre Dame. The Most Reverend Archbishop Dennis Schnurr will be the main celebrant. Information and tickets available at www.CincinnatiMensCon-ference.com.

Becoming Catholic. Seeking faith? Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215.

God speaks in whispers and we live in a loud world. Hearing God’s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. But He is always there to guide and help us, and He has given us other people and resources to help us, as well.

If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, give Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer a call at 421.3131, ext. 2890.

Marriage AnnulmentsThe Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at [email protected]. All inquiries are kept in strict

confidence.

ST. CECILIA FEAST: Thank you to our amazing choir for the beautiful Mass celebrating our patron saint. I also want to thank the Pastoral Council members for the lovely reception afterward (photos 1 and 2). 1 WHITE MASS FOR CAREGIVERS: I am so grateful to those that were nominated from St. Cecilia to represent the caregivers of our parish. These five people are always there to care for our sick parishioners. I am glad our archdiocese sets a day aside to celebrate our wonderful caregivers. Cathy Schneider, Linda and Carl DeBlasio, and Lorna and Ron Case (photo 3) were the nominees from St. Cecilia Parish. 1

QUINCEANERA: Congratulations to Laura and Luzelena Reyna for celebrating their Quinceanera on Nov. 18 at the 4:00 Mass (photos 4 and 5). In Latin culture, the Quinceanera is a rite of passage for girls. The Mass is one of thanksgiving to God for their many blessings, and it’s also a way of presenting the girls to the community. 1 CONGRATULATIONS! Jesse Roy and Kiersten Ottaway (photo 6) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Nov. 17. Deacon Larry Day was the presider. Michael Vadnais and Stephanie Kamba (photo 7) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Nov. 18. Please remember these couples in your prayers. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: Alice Claire Ratcliff, daughter of Joseph and Lindsey Ratcliff (photo 8), and Adeline Evelyn Cincula, daughter of Andrew and Chelsea Cincula (photo 9), were baptized Nov. 19.

A Thanksgiving Volunteer Thank-YouOur sincere thanks goes to all who assisted with this year’s wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Nearly 70 turkeys were roasted and donated, hundreds of dinners were delivered to people in their homes, and dozens more people helped with carving turkeys, boxing dinners to go, coordinating the deliveries, serving those who dined with us in the St. Cecilia Commons, clearing tables, washing dishes, and helping with cleaning up.

Special thanks to Margie Dorn (delivery reservations) and Dolores O’Connell (turkey donations).

Finally, thanks to those who assisted with their financial contributions and the following businesses who help us each year: Busken Bakery, Frisch’s Restaurants, The Bonbonerie, Skyline Chili, Kroger, Klosterman Baking Co., and Basic American Foods.

Glória in excélsis Deo. We celebrate Latin Mass every Tuesday at 9AM.

We Need Your Help St. Cecilia School is having a shopping event for our students. Candy Cane Lane will take place Dec. 14 from 8 AM until 2 PM. It will be a chance for our students to celebrate Christmas by buying inexpensive gifts for their parents and family.

How can you help? We are looking for donations and volunteers! We need wrapping paper, tape, bows and gift tags. We need people to wrap presents and perhaps people to walk with a child or two to help them select gifts.

Please contact Gina Simon at 513-368-3345 for more info or to volunteer for this project. Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!

Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support that the St. Cecilia parish has shown us. Due in large part to the generosity of the parish, we have raised enough money to purchase a new van and pay for the modifications needed to make the van wheelchair accessible for Gabriel. It will be ready by the end of January. Thank you to all who attended the fundraiser dinner, to all who contributed to our cause, both at the dinner and through private donations, and thank you for everyone’s prayers! - Marie and Adam Thompson
