HospitalitySeventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B26th July 2015 Caroline NolanCommentaryFirst Reading (2kgs 4:42-44)

Two men appeared in this text. The man from Baal-shalishah and the man of God (îs elohîm), Elisha. One an ordinary man, the other a prophet. One a servant, the other a master. Elisha commanded his servant to distribute twenty barley loaves and grain to about one hundred people. The man questioned Elisha’s judgment since he didn’t think that there was enough food, but the prophet repeated his command. So the servant followed Elisha’s directive immediately and the people ate and there was some food left. Elisha had been confident that this would be the case since God had revealed to him in advance the outcome.

What was necessary, though, for the word of God to be fulfilled was faith. Elisha had to exhibit faith in God and to encourage faith in his servant. Therefore, Elisha is a model of faith. It is his unwavering faith that allows him to work as a wonder worker. Prior to this miracle, he did many others: he prophesied the birth of a child and when that child became ill and died, he raised it to life (2 Kgs 4:8-37). Later, he saved a group of prophets from being poisoned (2 Kgs 4:38-41). In all of his actions, Elisha manifested not a super-human ability but the power of God working through him. Thus, the words and deeds of the prophet bear testimony to the active presence of God in the lives of his people and it is precisely this experience that gives rise to faith in Him.

Gospel (Jn 6:1-15)

John the evangelist’s story of the multiplication of the loaves and fish is a wonderful account of how Jesus met the needs of all who came to him, but it is also a story of what it means to be a

Page 7: Parish of Our Lady of Fatima Sunda…  · Web viewParish of Our Lady of Fatima 159 ... for the word of God to be ... Jesus has to flee from the crowd because the people wanted to

disciple of Christ. The story begins with Jesus sitting with his disciples on a mountain not far from the Galilee

sea-shore. Jesus uses this opportunity to test them and to teach them, starting with the question to Phillip. The multiplication of the loaves and fish does two things, the first is that it reveals the identity of Jesus and the second is that it gives rise to faith in Jesus that he is a true prophet who has come into the world (v.14). However, in the light of this event, Jesus has to flee from the crowd because the people wanted to force him to become king (v.15).

Put Christ back into Christmas Brainstorming gatheringAll great events and occasions require thorough preparation to ensure happy and successful

results. We who do experience the true joys of Christmas can help others to share the treasures of this happy and blessed occasion with the example we give by our own preparations.

We invite all parishioners who are willing to assist or share ideas for the Christmas season to join us at our gathering. We would like all areas and age groups represented at this gathering: musicians, catechists, junior church, youth ministry, choir, NSG, etc
