January is the time when we usually resolve to change something in our

lives. We make New Years’ resolutions which often involve breaking an

old habit or taking up a new one.

For lots of people, Church attendance is a habit – a good habit. Some

have broken the habit. As we enter a New Year, may we all take up the

good habit of joining the worshipping community in St. Brigid’s and All

Saints on a regular basis—we would love to see you.

May I also take this opportunity to thank all who contributed in making

both churches a special place at Christmas.

God bless you and yours in 2015.

Rev’d Ian Gallagher.

Holy Baptisms: ‘Go and make disciples of all nations baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ Sunday 30th November in St. Brigid’s Church: Ben, son of Rachel and Eamon Richardson. Ellie, daughter of Patricia and Dennis Tanner.

REMINDERS: Confirmation classes continue in January. The next class will be held on Saturday 10th January 2015 at 6.30 pm. Our ‘Embracing an Adult Faith’ workshops will commence on Monday 5th January at 8.00 pm. Please contact Clare in the office if you wish to attend and have not already signed up.

All Saints News

Christmas greetings to All Our Readers And best wishes for 2015.

~~~~~~~
In last month’s All Saints News there was a piece about Capt (Major) Waters whose name is listed on one of two illuminated cards in the church recording men and women associated with the parish who had served in the First World War. You may recall that Trevor Ward said that as a young lad, growing up in Mount Merrion, he knew Major Waters and was a friend of his son Alan. We can now continue this story. Your scribe took it upon himself to do a bit of sleuthing through the internet in search of Alan Waters. A name (Alan Rufus Waters) in California seemed to offer the best possibility of success and an email was sent to this address. Within a week an answer arrived; it is best to quote the opening paragraph:
I am amazed and delighted to hear from you! Yes, I am the son of Major Arthur Waters, and I remember well my good friend Trevor Ward. He lived on Foster Avenue and we lived on Mt. Anville Road as I remember. Also, we went to St. Andrews together. Later we lost touch after I went to Campbell in Belfast and my father moved the family to Delgany in Co. Wicklow.
Alan included a biographical note that, coincidentally, he had sent to Linda Laird , the President of the St. Andrews Alumni Association only a few days previously. He had a very interesting career, beginning in the Kenya Police in 1953, later moving into academia and, now retired, is Professor Emeritus of International Business at California State University in Fresno. The email was signed
Yours in amazement, Rufus (that’s the name I go by)
All the information has been passed to Trevor who will be writing a letter to Alan/Rufus over
Christmas.
A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. May all your troubles last as long as your New Year resolutions. Every year I make a resolution to change
myself....... this year I’m making a resolution to
be myself!
Stillorgan Players Dramatic Society Present the Pantomime
‘Old King Cole’ By Paul Reakes
King Cole may be old, but he’s not too old to fall in love and now he’s decided that it’s high time that he should take a wife! The women of the town and royal cook Dotty Dumplin are queueing up to audition for the role of Queen. Meanwhile, King Cole’s evil brother Peski and his wife Pariah are conspiring to unseat him from the throne - with a little help from a magic pool that reverses the ageing process, turning Old King Cole into Young King Cole! Outrageous characters, flamboyant costumes, jokes, songs and an exploding birthday cake all feature in this highly entertaining re-telling of the well-known nursery rhyme. St Brigid’s Community Garden We have had an eventful year in the Garden. Where to start? With a lot of Thank You’s We won two awards, one from AIB GIY Growing together and the RDS allotment provider award. The Stillorgan Players agreed to pay for supplying electricity to the Potting Shed which has made a huge difference to our Winter workshops, they also paid for our Wendy House way back in 2010 – we haven’t forgotten. We hand reared two female Goats in the Spring – Heidi and Bambi. They are now off to Africa with ‘Bothar’. A village will learn how to milk them and make cheese, the kids will go to other villages and so the cycle will go on. They started their journey in Co Clare so ‘It’s a long long way from Clare to here’ should be sung on their arrival! Thank you Airfield Farm for taking care of them. After the Goats we decided to get some Turkeys for the team members that wanted to rear their own Christmas Dinner. This is truly Farm to Fork in action. Many thanks to Carlow Free-range Poultry for agreeing to dress them for the table. They have also offered to give the children a tour of their family run farm in the Spring.
Stillorgan Village Vets have supported us all year with advice and taking samples for tests. Our latest arrival is a Hedgehog called Grainne.
GIY Dundrum come to us twice a year to cut the meadow and overhanging trees, these events are always great fun with refreshments around the BBQ to finish up.
We are now organising a chicken Co-Op. ( Or should that be Coop?) This idea came to us from a Canadian visitor, community members share in looking after the poultry and get eggs in return. At the time of writing we have 14 hens and two unwanted Roosters.
Geoff Lovegrove has transformed the garden with his wonderful skills at woodwork, brick laying, shed building, painting, grass cutting ……..it goes on. Peter Brown (ex Airfield) has given us great tips on vegetable growing and at the young age of 81 still collects seaweed to bring to the garden every Autumn. Seaweed is a underutilised fertiliser that has been used in Ireland for hundreds of years. Margot Jones (Professor in Dramatherapy) has been wonderful with the children at our garden club sessions. Owen Mooney ( ex Fernhill) has given us plants and history lessons by the score! Every plant has a story and he knows them all. Andrew Dennison flies around in the mornings making sure all the hens are fed and watered. Mr Gallagher has always allowed us to keep our varied animals, even when he has Deep Reservations. We hope they haven’t caused too much trouble!
Lastly, thank you to all the children who ‘grow’ in the garden. Watching them enjoy gardening and learning about wildlife is a reward in itself.
I can’t name everyone but thank you to all who keep the garden going and here’s to an eventful 2015. If anyone would like to join us we would be delighted to welcome you, all you need are a pair of Wellies and a sense of humour. (Deep pockets are always welcome too.)
Caroline Jolley and the Garden Team.
THE READING GROUP The book we read this month was called “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion. Don Tillman is a professor of genetics. Aged thirty none and still a bachelor, he has decided that he needs to find a wife, but, the perfect partner must fit in with his highly organised and idiosyncratic style of living. He draws up a sixteen page questionnaire for prospective candidates. There aren’t many responses and invariably meetings end up in disaster; mainly due to his inflexibility and lack of social skills.
Then along comes Rosie. Rosie appears to be a highly unlikely candidate and shows scant respect for his rules. However, they start working together on a project in the course of which they appear to be arriving at an understanding of each other. Will something spark between them? Read on;- “Pure wonderful escapism,” “Original, charming and very funny:” - these are two quotes from reviewers. The first Reading Group meeting of the New Year will be at 11 am in the Wishing Well on 12th January 2015. The book for review is “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and tells whether you are qualified to be a "professional." According to Andersen Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers! 1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator? Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way. 2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator? Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant and close the door. Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions. 3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend? Correct Answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory. OK, even if you didn't answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your abilities. 4. There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it? Correct Answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Conference. This
tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.
Ten Funny Things To Learn from the Story Of Noah's Ark
1. Don't miss the boat.
2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
4. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
5. Build your future on high ground.
6. For safety's sake, always travel in pairs.
7. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
8. When you're stressed, float a while.
9. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
10. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.
Psalm 118 Provides Us with a Certain Symmetry and a Few Smiles: 1. Psalm 118 is the middle chapter of the entire Bible.
2. Psalm 117, before Psalm 118 is the shortest chapter in the Bible.
3. Psalm 119, after Psalm 118 is the longest chapter in the Bible.
4. The Bible has 594 chapters before Psalm 118 and 594 chapters after Psalm 118.
5. If you add up all the chapters except Psalm 118, you get a total of 1188 chapters.
6. 1188 or Psalm 118 verse 8 is the middle verse of the entire Bible.
And what is the message found in verse 118? 'It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.' - Psalm 118:8
