Those who are familiar with the words of Holy Communion Rite 1 know these words well; “Come unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.” “So God loved the world , that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all who believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” These two verses from scripture are rarely, if ever, associated with Christmas. Christmas cards, if you can find a religious one, are all about shepherds, angels, wise men, stars and a baby in a manger. Christmas for many doesn’t include any of the above but is all about food, drink and presents. These two scripture verses remind us what Christmas and our faith is all about: “So God loved the world , that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all who believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” “Come unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.” I look forward to seeing many familiar faces and unfamiliar faces in church this Christmas as we remind ourselves of the greatest gift of all.

All Saints News November, with both All Saints Day and Remembrance Sunday, is especially the month of remembering in All Saints Church. The Patronal Festival Service was held on Sunday 2 November, when the reading out of the name of each person to be remembered was also marked by the placing of a white rose in a pedestal arrangement beside the pulpit. By the end of the readings, 120 roses formed a beautiful and memorable display that – appropriately - was also in place for the Remembrance Service on the following Sunday. Our thanks go to May Conneff for her initiative and all the work required to make the venture so successful. In the September All Saints News we listed the names of men and women associated with All Saints who had served in the First World War. One name was Arthur Waters, Capt. ASC, about whom two parishioners have come forward with information. Trevor Ward says that as a young lad growing up in Mount Merrion he knew Major Waters (as he had become) who lived at Callery, Mount Anville Road. Trevor knew and was a friend of his younger son, Alan. Major Waters worked in the Taxing Masters office in the Four Courts. David G Murphy, a motor cycling enthusiast, knew that Major J A H Waters had been a well-known motor cyclist before and after the Great War, during which his skills were utilised as a despatch rider. Hence his attachment to the Army Service Corps (ASC). Amazingly, David produced a piece of trench art, a circular brass box made from the cases of two howitzer shells and dated November 1916, which is inscribed ‘To T. W. Murphy from Captain J. A. H. Waters’. T. W. Murphy was David’s grandfather. David also possesses a copy of the Irish Cyclist and Motor Cyclist of May 23rd 1917 which has a photograph of Captain Waters in his uniform. Later motor cycling magazines record Major Waters’ post-war activities, in 24-hour reliability trials for example. A final piece of information: James Arthur Hill Waters of Woodview, Stillorgan, married Rachel Louie Orr of 2 Ulster Terrace, Stillorgan, on 21 September 1920 in St. Brigid’s church.

~~~~~ Don’t forget. Tell your friends.
Stillorgan Players Dramatic Society Present the Pantomime
‘Old King Cole’
By Paul Reakes
King Cole may be old, but he’s not too old to fall in love and now he’s decided that it’s high time that he should take a wife! The women of the town and royal cook Dotty Dumplin are queueing up to audition for the role of Queen. Meanwhile, King Cole’s evil brother Peski and his wife Pariah are conspiring to unseat him from the throne - with a little help from a magic pool that reverses the ageing process, turning Old King Cole into Young King Cole! Outrageous characters, flamboyant costumes, jokes, songs and an exploding birthday cake all feature in this highly entertaining re-telling of the well-known nursery rhyme
Did you kindly take home a cream tablecloth from the Parish Centre to wash? If so, and you forgot to return it we would be most grateful if you could bring it back to the hall!! There are three (expensive) cream tablecloths missing and we would appeal to anyone to check their linen cupboards in case they were inadvertently left there!! Thank You.
St. Brigid’s National School At the time of writing we are in the third week of November and preparations have started for our school Carol Service which will take place on Thursday 18th December at 7.00 p.m.in St. Brigid’s church. Our charity events to date: €128.75 collected on our Dress Up Day in aid of Laura Lynn. Over 80 beautifully filled shoeboxes were collected in early November by the Team Hope organisers to begin their journey to children abroad who may not be as fortunate as us. Closer to Christmas we will support the Local Lions Club food appeal. We welcomed: Ms. Charlotte Martin who spent a week with us for Transition Year work experience. It was great to see her again. Ms. Amy Stokes who is a student at the Church of Ireland Training College. 3rd and 4th Class really enjoyed their time with her. 6th Class Challenge Many thanks to Sandra Ruttle and Ursula Celano for arranging a fabulous outing for 6th Class exploring local businesses in Stillorgan. They had a wonderful time. Another 6th Class challenge trip is planned to a local Fire Station and the class will also have a visitor for a Christmas craft workshop. We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. From all the staff and pupils in St. Brigid’s.
Jack was in front of me coming out of church one
day, and the Rector was standing at the door as
he always is to shake hands. The Rector stopped
Jack by the hand and pulled him aside.
The Rector said to him, 'You need to join the
Army of the Lord!'
Jack replied, 'I'm already in the Army of the Lord,'
The Rector questioned, 'How come I don't see
you except at Christmas and Easter?'
He whispered back, 'I'm in the secret service.'
All Saints’ & St. Brigid’s National Schools Christmas Card Competition
Many thanks to all the students who entered our Christmas Card competition to design the Parish Christmas card this year. Once again we were surprised and delighted with the very high standard and finding two winners was an extremely difficult task. Nonetheless they are as follows:
The Gardai have been visiting the school as part of the Garda Schools Programme in which they inform the children of their duties and what their job involves. Junior Achievement is continuing in each of the classrooms this year. This is a very popular initiative where people from the business community tell the children about the job they do, encouraging the children to look ahead at what they might consider doing in the future. The Book Fair was a great success. It was fantastic to see the children so enthusiastic about reading. The school is entitled to take 60% of the takings in book form so Ms Black, Ms Bedell, Ms Orr and Ms Gardiner were able to choose a lovely selection of books for the classroom. Thanks to the children and parents for supporting this. Some of our parents have been extremely busy tidying up the yard and it is looking very spruce in time for Christmas. We extend a huge thanks to them. As you can imagine we are very busy in the run up to Christmas but the most important date is our Carol Service in All Saints’ Church on Wednesday 17th December at 7pm. Everyone is most welcome and we look forward to seeing you there. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful Christmas.
The staff and pupils of All Saints’ National School.
Stillorgan guides have had a busy and varied autumn. We enjoyed a district weekend in larch hill with 50 guides and
leaders. The theme was " Minions" . These are single yellow cellular beings who thrive to serve their master. So we made minion cushions, minion cup cakes and had minion named patrols. The weekend was run by Catherine Swanick from Tullow guides who was being tested for her indoor licence. Congratulations to Catherine who obviously spent many hours preparing her programme and earned her licence. We had some outdoor activities too which included archery, a tremendous fire works display curtesy of the scouts and a old fashion campfire where many tunes of old were belted out under the stars lead by Diane and Alice. The guides sent 25 shoe boxes to Chernobyl to the elderly ( babushkas and dadushkas) we have supported this charity for the last 2 years where the hub of the charity is run from the organisers front sitting room. The guide programme has been active and varied over the last few weeks down in the hall. We have spent time working on the new programme 'free being me ' which aims to get the girls to look at themselves and others in a positive way. Another badge being attempted is the pet care badge, which was run by liane our resident veterinary nurse. The girls working on this badge enjoyed a great visit to our local vet practice ( village vets on the old St Brigids road) , where Colm the resident vet gave the girls a behind the scenes tour. We saw how microchips are inserted and used, listened to a very patient Maggie the dogs heart. Looked at X-rays , ticks, worms and fleas. We all got a bag of goodies on leaving. We have 20 girls working on their tenderfoot to allow them become full members of the unit and will have an enrolment before the end of the year. Our numbers are very healthy at the moment, which is great for the parish. Finally were sorry to say good bye to Andrea from Madrid who was on a student visit for 3 months and joined us for her time in Ireland staying with Lucia one of our longstanding guides. We really enjoyed Andreas time with us and she got to experience our outings and weekly meetings. Also we say Bon voyage to Liane who heads to Sydney to work and holiday for a year. Guides will have their last meeting on Friday December 12th and return in mid January after the much anticipated parish panto. As we come to the end of another year we would like to thank the hall committee and parish for the use of such a wonderful facility at such responsible rates. Susan Henry
The Reading Group Psychosis: psychiatric disorder characterised by loss of contact with reality. All families are psychotic by Douglas Coupland was this month’s read. The story is of a family get together to watch the launch of a space shuttle carrying Sarah, daughter of Ted and Janet (who are long separated) into orbit. Sarah has only one hand as she was born with a disability due to Thalidimide. She is the only one of their 3 children who has been successful. She keeps in touch as far as possible with both her brothers. Wade her elder brother left home 30 years ago and has led a shady life and is now in the latter stages of Aids. His mother Janet also has Aids as when Ted lost his cool and shot Wade the bullet went through Wade and then through Janet infecting her!
The story includes pharmaceutical drug lords, a restaurant hold up , death in Walt Disney land, black market baby sales and also suicide attempts by Brian the third son who is clever but a bit of a twit and permanently depressed. And that list only mentions some. There is a good sense of place and a strong sense of fearful suspense at times. Very few of us thought it funny when reading but the discussion was punctuated with great burst of laughter so maybe it should be read again. The book for next month is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Meet at The Wishing Well at 11am and as it is the last meeting for 2014 it would be great if everyone could stay for lunch. Scouting News Most of the new beavers have now been invested and it is lovely to see them in the Stillorgan Scout troop colours of red and green. We constructed life-size robots who needed a home, thanks to all the parents who offered accommodation. We are off on a hike with the Beavers from Blackrock on the 7th December and we are looking forward to our TRIP to the ice rink in Dundrum which will be or last meeting for 2014. Whilst Beavers have a low centre of gravity, the same cannot be said for Beaver leaders. The Cub scouts also enrolled its newest members . We has a family hike up a windy 3 rock mountain but the day was dry and refreshing to say the least . We are looking forward to a busy December when we join forces with the Brownies for our annual Christmas disco. The cubs have been busy making Christmas gift tags with the help of one of the mums , Ursula Celano (who is also a new Associate Leader) and we will also be showing off our skating skills at Dundrum on Ice . The scouts camped in Lough Dan and the weather pushed our scouting skills when we arrived in very heavy rain but managed to the tents up after a break in the weather. We hiked over rough terrain on the Saturday so we earned our dinner that night and enjoyed a nice campfire. The new Year will kick off for the whole Group with a visit to the Stillorgan Players panto in January where some Cubs and leaders will be on stage ( oh yes they will )! A warm thank you to all the parents who helped in 2014 and the Leaders of course.
Santa lives at the North Pole. JESUS is everywhere. Santa comes but once a year JESUS is an ever present help. Santa fills your stockings with goodies JESUS supplies all your needs. Santa comes down your chimney uninvited JESUS stands at your door and knocks.. and then enters your heart. Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi little boy or girl, What's your name?" JESUS knew our name before we did. Not only does He know our name, He knows our address too. He knows our history and future and He even knows how many hairs are on our heads. Santa says "You better not cry" JESUS says "Cast all your cares on me for I care for you. Santa's little helpers make toys JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts, repairs broken homes and builds mansions. Santa may make you chuckle but JESUS gives you joy that is your strength. While Santa puts gifts under your tree JESUS became our gift and died on the tree. It's obvious there is really no comparison. We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about. We need to put Christ back in Christmas. Jesus is still the reason for the season. Yes, Jesus is better, he is even better than Santa Claus!
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS—DID YOU KNOW?
1. The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
2. Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
3. Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
4. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
5. The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
6. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
7. Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
8. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
9. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
10. The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
11. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
12. The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
On Thursday 6th November we held our AGM in the Good Room of the Parish Hall. It was very well attended this year. We were delighted that the committee will be remaining in office for another two years and they are as follows: Branch Leader - Barbara FitzPatrick Secretary - Clare MacManus Treasurer - Karen D’Alton Committee Members: Aileen Prole, Hilary Gallagher, Jackie Corcoran, Ann Rath, Cilla Turner. Following the order of business we had tea, coffee and biscuits. Clare then introduced a new game called ‘Three Truths and a Lie’. We proceeded to have great fun guessing what our members were ‘lying’ about in their personal lives!!! Our branch of the Mothers’ Union received a lovely letter from TRUST recently and this is a small excerpt from it: ‘Just a quick note of thanks to you and your colleagues in the Mothers’ Union for the wonderful clothes, food and toiletries delivered to us by our good friend Robert Prole. I know you will also pass on our sincerest thanks to the parishioners of St. Brigid’s Stillorgan and All Saints’, Blackrock for their ongoing support which makes our work possible.’
Some more back page humour A 7-year old child was drawing a picture of the Nativity. The picture was very good, including Mary, Joseph and, of course, baby Jesus. However, there was also a fat man standing in the corner of the stable. When the child was asked about it, she replied, "Oh, That's Round John Virgin." ************************ Mortal: What is a million years like to you? God: Like one second. Mortal: What is a million dollars like to you? God: Like one penny. Mortal: Can I have a penny? God: Just a second. ******************* A couple had two little mischievous boys, ages 8 and 10. They were always getting into trouble, and their parents knew
that if any mischief occurred in their town, their sons would get the blame.
The boys' mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would
speak with her boys. The clergyman agreed and asked to see them individually.
So, the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the clergyman in the afternoon.
The clergyman, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is God?"
They boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there with his mouth hanging open.
The clergyman repeated the question. "Where is God?"
Again, the boy made no attempt to answer.
So, the clergyman raised his voice some more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "Where is God!?"
The boy screamed and bolted from the room. He ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind
him.
When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, "What happened?"
The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied: "We are in real BIG trouble this time! God is missing, and they think we
did it!"
