For the month of June only, please note we shall be meeting on the 1st Thursday – 6th June, and we have kindly been invited by Claire Mirams, the Head Teacher, to attend the final rehearsal of the School Talent Show which will be held the following day. Our meeting on the 6th will begin at the usual time 2.00 for a 2.15pm start, and we shall serve our normal cups of tea and cakes afterwards in the School Hall. All over 60’s are warmly invited to join us for this and if you know of any elderly people living alone, who can’t get out much, please do invite them along, and if you or they need transport, please contact me on 748068 . Gardening

It is roses all the way this month (well it should be), regular deadheading will keep them in bloom longer and do be on your guard against aphids. Put greenhouse and conservatory plants outside for the rest of the Summer, but don’t forget to water them.

Talking of water, I know many of you water vegetables etc. even on allotments, and as parts of Stone in particular has very dry sandy soil it is deemed very necessary to water. I never watered my allotment in over 40 years, I always tried to dig in moisture retaining materials and always used the hoe as often as possible to create a dust mulch. As it would seem to me there are at least two problems with watering apart from the logistics of getting the water where it is required. One is the quality, or at least some of make up of the liquid, and the second is to make sure that enough water is applied. It is no use just damping the surface, if you do water check after watering that the moisture has gone down several inches.

If not already done pinch out the tops of broad beans hopefully before the arrival of black fly. If a lover of runner beans plant a few more seeds this month for a late crop. It is to be hoped this year for a much better crop of apples, pears and plums, and as of course June is the month of the June “drop” if there are still too many fruits left it does pay to thin them out some more, helps the flavour size and quality. Do not let vegetables get old and plant a few more lettuce and carrot seeds.

Can you spare some time to keep Dinton Churchyard Tidy? The next working party will be on June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14 and October 12. The work involved consists of light gardening tasks, mowing, weeding, strimming and general tidying up; you do as much as you want to. As an added incentive, refreshments are provided. If you would like to help, but Saturday morning is inconvenient, please contact Andrew or Helen and we can let you know what areas need to be worked on. Certain parts of the Churchyard are left as wildlife habitats and need a different work regime. Please could we ask that those tending graves only put compostable plant material in the compost bins and take plastic, cellophane, wire, plant pots etc. home with you. The churchyard is maintained by volunteers and we have no way of getting rid of plastic etc. Please contact Andrew or Helen Wild on 01296 748679

A Poem with a Message.

Ella Wheeler was born on the 5th of November 1850 on a farm in

Wisconsin, USA, and the youngest of four children. She started writing poetry at a very early age, and was well known as a poet in her own state by the time she graduated from high school. Her most famous poem, "Solitude", was first published in the February 25, 1883 issue of The New York Sun. The inspiration for the poem came as she was travelling to attend the Governor's inaugural ball in Madison, Wisconsin. On her way to the celebration, there was a young woman dressed in black sitting across the aisle from her. The woman was crying. Ella sat next to her and sought to comfort her for the rest of the journey. When they arrived, the poet was so depressed that she could barely attend the scheduled festivities. As she looked at her own radiant face in the mirror, she suddenly recalled the sorrowful widow. It was at that moment that she wrote the opening lines of:

“Solitude”:

Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone; For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go; They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all, There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink life’s gall. Feast, and your halls are crowded; Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a large and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain.


She sent the poem to the The New York Sun and received $5 for her effort. It was collected in the book Poems of Passion shortly after in May 1883.

In 1884, she married Robert Wilcox of Connecticut where the couple lived before moving to New York City. They had one child, a son, who died shortly after birth. Not long after their marriage, they both became interested in spiritualism. Early in their married life, Robert and Ella Wheeler Wilcox promised each other that whoever went first through death would return and communicate with the other. Robert Wilcox died in 1916, after over thirty years of marriage. She

was overcome with grief, which became ever more intense as week after week went without any message from him, still seeking help in her sorrow, still unable to understand why she had no word from her Robert. Eventually she claimed that Robert had made contact from beyond the grave with messages. One message told her to visit the allied forces in Europe. Ella travelled to France and read poems to groups of soldiers and talked to them regarding personal hygiene.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox died of cancer

on 20th October 1919.

Jesus’ teaching on prayer

Luke 11

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Then Jesus said to them, ‘Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, “Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.”

And suppose the one

inside answers, “Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.” I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

“So I

say to you: ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks

finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

John the Baptist must have been good at praying. Jesus’ disciples were impressed and wanted to pray like that. How often do we say “I wish I could be like that” or “Our church should be just like that?”

Jesus’ answer was to show them how to pray. He said to them, “When you pray, say...” This is more than saying “use these words” but pray like this. So in what way should we pray?

The Lord’s Prayer is short and simple. Kingdom, bread and sin are simple words we understand. It is practical and respectful. The prayer honours God as both Father and King. We ask for the bread we need for today. It is requesting and conditional. Don’t be afraid to ask but we are only forgiven if we can forgive other people.

A WARNING TO LEADERS!

The crowds were good law-abiding Jews. They had travelled to Jerusalem (some of them many miles), in order to celebrate one of their great feasts – The Feast of Tabernacles. This Feast was to remember and celebrate the freedom of the Jews after spending 40 years in the wilderness. On the last day, the climax of the Feast, when water was poured upon the altar, Jesus said:

“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture says, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this He meant the Holy Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” John 7:37-39

The Pharisees and Chief Priests told the Temple Guards to arrest Jesus as an impostor, but they believed He spoke a lot of sense. “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted, “This mob (who have been taken in by Jesus) know nothing of the law, they said.”

This mob? – These were law-abiding Jews who had travelled many miles to keep the Festival! History shows that their instincts were right. Jesus was not an impostor but instead their long-awaited Messiah, and after Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension and the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, even many of the Jewish Priests became followers of Jesus.

David Cameron recently described the UKIP party as ‘fruit cakes’ and ‘loonies’, so implying that anyone who voted for them must be the same. However, for whatever reason, people still voted for UKIP in their thousands, so David Cameron has already had to tone down his remarks.

What these people have recently chosen as good citizens, is to exercise their democratic right to vote in an election. They must either be dissatisfied with some of the current government policies, or they see some truth in what UKIP is saying, or both!

The High Priests and Pharisees got it badly wrong. So David Cameron be warned! Congratulations are due to all who are prepared to get involved with local politics and stand as our representatives, whether or not they are elected.

The Annual Church Meetings were held on Sunday, 21

st April 2013 at S John

The Baptist Church, Stone. The purpose of the meetings is to elect officers to serve the church during the coming year, to receive reports and discuss church business. This is a very busy parish with something for everyone who wants to be part of it in whatever way. The social events arranged for the year are open to anyone who would like to attend and are advertised on the church website http://stonedintonhartwell.com and in this magazine. There are still spaces on the PCC and if anyone who is on the Electoral Roll, and has been so for at least six months, can be co-opted at anytime. If you would like to join and help to make decisions regarding your local church then please make yourself known to Rev'd Peter Rich or another PCC member as we would welcome new members. The annual report of the work within the wider parish and community adopted by the PCC was presented as were the audited accounts of the parish and fabric reports from both churches. Projects to provide toilet and kitchen facilities at both ends of the parish are underway but fundraising is going to be a major part of the work throughout the year. Any donations will be most gratefully received as these facilities will be of advantage to everyone who attends, uses or visits our beautiful churches. The first part of the meetings saw the elections and the results were as follows. Churchwardens: Mrs Eryl Morgan, Mr David John, Miss Jean Moore and Mr Raymond Medhurst Deanery Synod Representatives: Mrs Jenny Pickup and Mrs Liz Tomkins Parochial Church Council members: Mrs Christine Ashbridge, Mrs Sue Birrell, Mr Ivor James, Mr George Lamb, Mrs Anne Seckington, Mrs Valma Thompson, Mr Andrew Wild, Mr Alan Atkinson. Thanks were expressed on behalf of the entire parish to Mr Gordon Gill who was standing down from the PCC this year after 40 years of loyal service to the church in many different roles. A SMALL DONATION FROM THE TAX MAN

The Inland Revenue introduced what they call “A small donations scheme” (SDS) on 6th April this year to extend tax repayments on donations of £20 or less which do not qualify for Gift Aid. The tax repayment of 25% will apply to each Church up to donations totalling no more than £5,000 per annum. Stone and Dinton will therefore each have a maximum of £5,000 for such donations. There are naturally Terms and Conditions in the scheme such as –

1) The donation must have been given at a Service in Church with an attendance of 10 or more.

2) The donations within the collection bowl will qualify, but must

be in cash (coins or notes). Cheques are excluded.

3) Donations in our weekly brown envelopes not subject to Gift Aid will also qualify for tax repayment so long as the total cash in each envelope or series of envelopes is not more than £20. If the total donation is more than £20, the whole donation is disallowed for tax repayment.

As we move into summer, we have taken the opportunity to introduce the new Summer a la Carte Menu, and we have brought back through popular demand our two Courses for £9.95 menu. This is available from 12pm until 2pm Monday to Thursday.

Throughout the month there will be a selection of special offers including Fresh avocado and smoked salmon salad followed by strawberries and clotted cream, perhaps with a glass of Pimms…
