The Transfiguration of the Lord

“And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.” -MATTHEW 17:2

Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.

Background on the Gospel The Transfiguration of the Lord

Matthew 17:1–9

Jesus is transfigured on the mountain in the presence of Peter, James, and John.

Today’s liturgy invites us to celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast calls to our attention the importance of this event in Jesus’ life, further affirmed by its report in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In Cycle A, the reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messiah and after Jesus predicts his Passion. In each of these Gospels, a discussion of the cost of discipleship precedes the Transfiguration. In each Gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Jesus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures in the history of Israel. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received from Yahweh the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law, which guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is one of the most important prophets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yahweh, and some believed that Elijah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. The appearance of these two figures from Israel’s history indicated Jesus’ continuity with the Law and the prophets. They also reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel. Upon witnessing Jesus’ Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, an awestruck Peter offered to construct three tents for them when a voice from Heaven affirms that Jesus is "my beloved Son" and commands the disciples to listen to him. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Until they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being "raised from the dead." We, however, have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration Gospel, we see an anticipation of Jesus’ Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ’s glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection.

Food Pantry Ministry Our next distribution is scheduled for Thursday, September 7

th

from 3pm-5pm in the Rectory basement. We are taking the month of August off so our shelves can be restocked. Since the

closure of Assumption Parish the amount of families receiving food has almost doubled from 50 to 90 families. Unfortunately, our donations have decreased drastically. We are asking all of our parishioners to please donate nonperishable food items, such as pasta sauce, macaroni, cereal, macaroni & cheese canned (potatoes, fruit, soup, vegetables) & tuna fish. You can also make a monetary donation. If you are donating by check, please make your check payable to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Please help this ministry that has been in existence for over 30 years. Without your help we will not be able to continue this vital ministry. May God Bless you for all your help!

Soup Kitchen Ministry The Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen depends on the generous contributions of our parishioners for the funds to purchase the food for the poor of our community. Without you we could not do this charitable work. It’s with your generous help that we have been able to purchase all the food for the first & second meals and the freezer that we needed in the kitchen. The next meal will be served on Thursday August 24th at 6pm. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to the ‘Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen’ and give to one of our priests in a sealed envelope clearly marked "SOUP KITCHEN" or put in the collection basket. For additional information about this ministry, please check our website www.StVincentChurch.net. God bless you and thank you for your contributions!

Tricky Tray Update The Tricky Tray committee has been working diligently on this major fundraiser for our parish. At this time we are asking our parishioners to donate a new gift such as toaster, crock pot, blender and etc. for our baskets. We are also accepting monetary donations which will help to buy more gifts. If giving a monetary donation please write it out to St. Vincent de Paul Church and put in the memo Tricky Tray Donation. Thank you for your generosity.

Agosto 6, 2017,
