Hai Lenten Almsgiving Appeal Last year a new founda on, Kwansas, was established to fund a career placement office and business school scholar-ships for the older children who have graduated from the Orphanage. Because of the health risks, we probably won’t celebrate mass again next weekend, so we have postponed Chip’s visit and will reschedule, probably in the summer. However, this is our annual Lenten Almsgiving mission. Please be generous in your support of the children. Fr. Neil

Fourth Sunday of Lent The Lord tells Samuel to go to the house of Jesse because he has chosen his king from among his sons. Samuel thinks the Lord must mean the eldest, Eliab, who is strong and handsome. God tells Samuel not to judge by appearances. He sends for the youngest son, David, who is out tending sheep. When David arrives, the Lord tells Samuel to anoint David because he is the one that God has chosen to be King in Israel. Paul tells the Ephesians that they were once darkness but now are light in the Lord. He calls them to live in the light, which produces every kind of goodness, right-eousness and truth. In the gospel, Jesus cures a man born blind. Because this healing takes place on the Sabbath, the Pharisees believe that Jesus cannot have come from God. The man replies that he was blind and now he sees, there-fore this miraculous cure can only have come from God. The Pharisees threw him out of the Temple, but Jesus finds him and the man born blind believes and worships Jesus as the Messiah.

Fourth Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate Laetare Sunday, from the La n word “Rejoice”. It is a reminder that beyond the darkness of our Lenten journey through sin and death, is the glory of the light of Christ. The scriptures call us to see beyond the darkness of our own sins and spiritual blindness and invite us to see as God sees, through the light of God’s Word to the glory of the Resurrec on. In today’s gospel, Jesus cures the man born blind. Not only does he bring about a physical restora on of the man’s sight, but opens his “spiritual” sight so that he can see God. Chris anity is a way of seeing, about having the right vision. Jesus comes into our lives to rearrange our personal ideas and gives us God’s ideas. Revela on means that something that was hidden is brought to the light. Jesus guides us to a vision, a way of seeing the world around us with spiritual eyes. Our vision is clouded by original sin that gives us a self-centered perspec ve and allows the values of the culture (the world) to form the lens through which we see. This leads to spiritual blindness, preconcep ons and values that are not from God. The Lord tells Samuel, “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” In the Le er to the Ephesians, St. Paul exhorts us to live as children of the light. Our vision should be shaped by what Christ taught, how he lived and how he acted.

In the gospel story, Jesus invites us to really see the kingdom of God. The Pharisees are wise and are the keepers of the Law of Moses. But their own interpreta on and preconcep ons of the Law, based on cultural iner a and their sense of their own righteousness, prevent them from seeing the truth. At first the blind man merely states the truth: I don’t know if this man is a sinner. I do know that I was born blind and now I see. But he goes on to the realiza on that no one can restore sight to the blind except God; therefore Jesus must come from God. A er being expelled from the synagogue, he is found by Jesus and asked directly “do you believe?” He replies “I do believe” and worships him.

Curiously Jesus says “I came into the world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and that those who do see might become blind.” Jesus will judge each of us. But he gives us the grace to see, to be redeemed, if we will humble ourselves to seek and live his will. He tells the Pharisees that, because they claim to see, their sin remains. They are so sure that, because they are the Law keepers, they are the ones to interpret and mediate God’s ac ons. They “see” because they know the Law; but they become blind because they refuse to see the grace of God. This stubborn willfulness is a part of all of us. God gives us the grace to see in a new way if we are willing to trust him. Jesus reminds the Pharisees constantly that it is the Spirit that gives life, not the law. In fact, he says, the le er of the Law kills. Jesus invites us to share his vision of God’s love, based on compassion, mutual for-giveness and love. He calls us to live in harmony with one another as he is in perfect harmony with the Father.

In the interest of Public Health and Safety, both our public officials and Cardinal Cupich have announced suspen-sion of most opera ons in our state and in our Archdiocese. All normal Parish and Archdiocesan ac vi es have been cancelled un l further no ce. For the sake of our employees we are reducing office hours for the dura on. The church will be open on a limited basis on Wednesday and Sunday. We will be carrying on much of our regular administra ve work either remotely or in the offices. At the Cardinal’s request, I will be celebra ng a private mass for the people of the parish on Sundays and for the private inten ons in our mass book during the week. Please do not call or ask, since the priests are not permi ed to have anyone from the community present.

I do understand the inconveniences that this is causing for our parishioners. Even more so, the hardships of the city and state wide shut down of normal ac vi es. This has caused great anxiety and financial burdens for many people. Please know that you are all in my prayers. I am also available by telephone or by e-mail for personal con-versa ons, and for anoin ng of the sick on a limited basis. More details can be found on page six.

The Lenten Almsgiving Appeal for the Mission is Hai , planned for next weekend, has been postponed. Chip and I will look at our calendars and re-schedule his visit.

Have a great week. Stay safe and healthy. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Conversations on Faith — The Lord’s Prayer The Lord’s Prayer is the most commonly shared prayer among all Christian traditions. We know it so well, and many people pray it every day. This year we will take the opportunity to “unpack’ the prayer and have some time to share reflections on what it means personally to each of us. This month’s conversation, “Forgive Us Our Trespasses, As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us” has been cancelled. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not in to temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Wednesday Evenings from 7 p.m. -8:30 p.m. in the Church

Li le Sisters of the Poor – St. Mary’s Home 2325 N. Lakewood Ave.

Chicago, IL 60614

We have been contacted by a Social Worker with Li le Sisters of the Poor – St. Mary’s Home. Their mission is to provide a loving home for people age 65+ who need long-term care, but cannot afford the cost of a private pay nursing home. St. Mary’s Home is seeking advice on finding the truly poor elderly who do not

have support. Let me know if anyone at your parish is in need of our care.

Archdiocese to Broadcast Mass on You Tube During this difficult me, it is par cularly important that the faithful have access to the grace and comfort of Holy Mass. While we observe restric ons on our in-person a endance at liturgies, I invite you to watch and par cipate in the celebra on of Sunday, Saturday evening, and Daily Masses using the internet. Beginning Saturday, March 21, the Archdiocese will broadcast weekend Masses from Holy Name Cathedral in English, Spanish and Polish. These Masses will be available on our YouTube channel beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21 and will con nue un l in-person a endance at liturgies is reinstated.

Addi onally, daily Mass will be celebrated and broadcast from St. James Chapel on weekdays. These Masses will be available on our YouTube channel beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 17. The recordings of all Masses will remain on our YouTube channel.

Our website, www.archchicago.org, provides resources to enrich your personal prayer life and deepen our solidarity with one another as we experience the disrup ons caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We will add to these and share them with you as they become available. Let us con nue to pray for all affected by the current pandemic and, together, seek Our Lady’s intercession for our protec on and the wellbeing of the most vulnerable among us.

Update on Corona Virus Response

In order to contain the spread of the Covid 19 (Corona) Virus, Cardinal Cupich has mandated that all parish Masses, Liturgical Services and public gatherings be cancelled un l such me as we are told that it is safe to resume. All Arch-diocesan schools will be closed beginning on Monday, March 16. While this was a difficult decision for the Cardinal, par cularly to deprive the faithful from hearing God’s Word and receiving his Precious Body and Blood, the health and safety of our families is a priority. To put everyone’s mind at rest, the obliga on to par cipate in the Sunday Eu-charist is also suspended.

We are taking advantage of this difficult me to undertake a thorough cleaning of all our facili es and to catch up on projects that are usually deferred when the buildings are in use. The Rectory Office will remain open and the parish staff will be available on a limited basis to take care of individual needs and the administra on of the parish. The School and Faith Forma on Offices will be closed, but the staff will be available by e-mail and will respond to voice messages in as mely a manner as possible. The school faculty will also be available for E-Learning so that the stu-dents can stay current on their academic assignments.

The Church will be open for quiet prayer on Wednesday from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

The Office will be open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., and closed on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

I share the Cardinal’s concern for the necessity of taking these precau ons. The containment of this virus is very cri cal to the well-being of our na on. I will keep you updated as new informa on comes in. In the mean me, I en-courage you not to panic and to keep one another in prayer.

I request that you please con nue to support the parish financially through the Sunday envelopes or Give Central.

Sincerely,

Fr. Neil
