Dear Friends, During this penitential season of Lent we make a conscious effort to avoid sin and be

faithful to the gospel. In last Sunday’s Gospel Jesus journeyed into the desert and was tempted by the devil. In this week’s Gospel we heard of Jesus climbing a high mountain on which he was transfigured in front of his closest disciples. Whether isolated in the wilderness or accompanied by friends on a mountaintop, Jesus remains faithful to the will of God. May the blessings of God the Father on Jesus’ journey be realized in ours as well!

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week, at 7PM in church, we will gather for our annual Parish Mission. This is a highlight of not only the Lenten calendar but of our yearly spiritual encounters with men and women of faith from across the country. This year we are blessed to have John Kinuthia, a motivational speaker, Catholic life coach and leadership trainer. His topics are: Praying from the Heart, Be Transformed and Share Your Story. I think we are all in for a treat this mission. Please make it a priority for you and your family. Please feel free to invite friends and neighbors and anyone you feel may profit from this three day spiritual experience. It will definitely be time well spent with the Lord and fellow Lenten pilgrims!

We will once again host an Appreciation Dinner for all parish volunteers on Sunday, March 29th at 4PM in Monsignor Marley Hall. This dinner is for anyone who has done anything by way of volunteering in the varied parish organizations and services. There will be no formal invitations sent for this occasion. If you wish to attend, kindly fill out the reservation slip found in the bulletin and return it to the parish office by collection basket, mail or drop off. We will need to know if you plan to attend no later than by Monday, March 23rd. This will allow us to give the caterer an accurate number for properly preparing for the event. I look forward to seeing many of you that afternoon and to break bread with you in thanksgiving for your generosity to the parish community.

May these days with extra evening sunlight remind us of the growing light of Christ in our hearts, minds and souls!

Saint Robert Bellarmine, pray for us! With prayers,

Of Lent

LET’S SAVE LIVES! • Every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood. • The Red Cross must collect 14,000 units of blood each day. • Each blood donation can help save up to 3 lives. • It only takes about an hour to give blood. • 80 percent of blood donations are given at blood drives hosted by organizations like ours.

St. Robert’s Parish is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive on Wednesday March 11th from 2pm-7pm. Please consider being a donor. Even if you are unable to donate blood, please consider helping in a non-donor capacity with this worthy cause. Let us know how you’d like to help. Call Mary Marquis at 215-539-0516.

Second Sunday of Lent Genesis 12:1–4; 2 Timothy 1:8b–10; Matthew 17:1–9.

In our Lenten series , No Greater Love, Dr. Sri points out that Peter James and John, who Jesus brought to witness the Transfiguration, were the same three he took with him to Gethsemane while he prayed. This glimpse of his glory fortified them for all they were about to witness in Jerusalem.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church #555: “You were transfigured on the mountain, and your disciples, as much as they were capable of it, beheld your glory, O Christ our God, so that when they should see you crucified they would understand that your passion was voluntary, and proclaim to the world that you truly are the splendor of the Father.” (Byzantine Liturgy, Feast of the Transfiguration)

We are in the early days of our forty days. Are we supporting ourselves with prayer? Are we taking time finding our mountaintop, cave, or wilderness spot? Now is a crucial time for this Lent. If we hope to find the light and find a bit of our transfiguration, we cannot remain simply transfixed and in awe of others on the mountaintop. We need to work at our prayer, our fasting, our wilderness. No longer afraid, as Jesus tells us, we can return to our daily lives knowing that our ancestors in faith sustain us through whatever our wilderness times and places may be. May this Lent be a time of spiritual fortification for each of us!

COME TO OUR PARISH MISSION!! Sunday through Tuesday

March 8-10 at 7:00 PM in the Church

Tuesday — Share Your Story

Our Presenter: John was born and raised in Kenya, the second of seven children. He was always involved in many aspects of his Catholic faith. BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS Next Class – Monday, March 16th at 7pm in the family room. Pre-registration is necessary in order to attend the class. No date for Baptism can be set until parents fulfill this requirement. Parents and Godparents should register for this class as soon as they know of the upcoming birth, and always prior to the actual birth of the child. Register by calling the parish office between 9a & 4p weekdays. Classes held every other month: Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov.

RESPECT LIFE No one has the right to tell a woman she has to have a child. The pro-life movement has never suggested that women should be required to have children. However, it is a biological fact that when a woman is pregnant she already has a child. Our argument is that this child should not be killed by abortion.

THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL FOR 2020 GIVING HOPE TO ALL. “I lived in Chester my whole life. I started visiting the Coffee Club at the Catholic Socials Services Center years ago. I started volunteering at the Coffee Club and in Martha’s Choice Market Place. Nutritional Development Services provides essential food items for the food pantry. We serve up to 400 people a month, which is amazing! The marketplace provides a sense of dignity for our clients – they get to do their own shopping, and no one leaves empty handed. We take care of every person who walks through our front the door. There are a lot of people here in Chester who are homeless and others who are not feeling so well. At the end of the day, we just try to help them feel better. They are grateful and happy, and they thank us every time. The community depends on us; they know when they visit here that they will get the help and assistance they need. I think people should support the Catholic Charities Appeal because there is no other place that helps and strengthens the community like they do.” – DeAndra, CSS Volunteer and Client Last year, over 700K people across Philadelphia were direct recipients of food Due to the generosity of supporters like you, nearly 2 million meal equivalents were provided. To date the parish is at 22% of our $71,900 goal with a donation of $15,615 from 149 parishioners. The Catholic Charities Appeal funds are deposited in a separate 501 (c) (3) charitable organization account. Donation envelopes can be found in the pews and at the church entrances.

EVER WONDERED HOW TO USE THE RICE BOWL? As Lent 2020 quickly approaches and we begin to look for ways to increase our prayer, almsgiving and sacrifice throughout our Lenten journey, one suggestion is a wholehearted participation in Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl this year. For those of us who may have forgotten or do not know the story of CRS Rice Bowl, it began in 1975 in a parish in the Allentown Diocese. It was a response to a call from Catholic Relief Services to help people in Africa who were starving due to a severe famine. Since that time it has grown into a national response to global hunger. Catholic Relief Services is the official relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Through Rice Bowl faith communities in every diocese throughout the United States put their faith into action through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lenten alms donated through the Rice Bowl this year will be sent to over 100 countries where CRS works. Three countries will be highlighted in this year's effort: Honduras, Vietnam and Kenya. Additionally, 25% of all donations stay within the United States to offer help locally. In our Archdiocese, the 25% is shared with Nutritional Development Services which supports a network of 50 food cupboards and soup kitchens. If each family takes just one Rice Bowl, it will find a pamphlet inside the Rice Bowl with suggestions as to ways in which the family may participate. This is the beauty of this program: it enables the entire family to enter fully into the spirit of Lent. There is a calendar of suggestions, recipes from the featured countries, online stories about family life in these countries and a Lenten prayer that can be used on the night of Rice Bowl in the family's home. Even if the recipes are not used, families can still participate by selecting one night a week on which the family will sit down to a simple, inexpensive meal. The money that would have been spent on the regular family meal gets put into the Rice Bowl. At the end of Lent the money the family donated in the Rice Bowl becomes a check which is placed into the collection basket on a specified Sunday. This year during Lent, we are challenging families to pay attention to Global Solidarity Week which occurs the week of March 22-27. Listen and look for ways you and your family may enter more fully into solidarity with our food deprived brothers and sisters around the world. Thank you! (Special thanks to Sr. Joyce Bell lHM for her assistance in preparing)
