RALLY DAY & PARISH PICNIC! by Lindsay Wilhite, Parish Life
Make plans for St. Luke’s Annual Rally Day and the Rally Day Picnic on Sunday, September 11th.
Rally Day is always the first Sunday after Labor Day and is the day we kick-off our Christian Education offerings for the fall for children and adults. Classes start at 9:30 a.m. We celebrate this day with a parish-wide picnic and we will gather at Ted and Tricia Nelson's barn in north Jackson again. Dress casually for church and meet us after the 10:30 service at the barn - 99 Hickory Glen Drive, Jackson, 38305 (directions below). We will provide fried chicken and soft drinks/water and you provide the side dishes and desserts. There will be a bouncy house for the kids, plenty of games and time for relaxing and catching up with friends. Who knows? Maybe we can talk Ted into bringing the cows and horses out again!
Bring lawn chairs, blankets, Frisbees, etc., and make a day of it. Friends are welcome!
Directions to the Nelson's barn : Type in 99 Hickory Glen Drive, Jackson, into a GPS or Google Maps, OR : From church, head North on 45-Bypass. Take a LEFT onto North Parkway, then a RIGHT onto Hollywood Dr. Take the ramp to the right toward Country Club Lane. Turn RIGHT onto Country Club Lane, then take an almost immediate LEFT onto Express Dr. Follow Express Dr. for 1.5 miles, curving to the right as it becomes Pipkin Rd., then turn LEFT onto Shadow Ridge Dr. Turn RIGHT onto Redfield Dr., then turn RIGHT onto Hickory Glen Dr. Look for the balloons! Hickory Glen Dr. dead ends to a gravel road and parking is to your left.
CARDS FOR OUR EL HOGAR GODCHILDREN
We will send cards to our godchildren, Fernanda and José, with a group photo of St. Luke’s parishioners on the cover of the cards. At the Rally Day Picnic we will take a group photo just before the meal.
We will include letter(s) from our parish. Our children will write notes during Sunday School on Rally Day and Mary Beth Seltzer will help with translations. If you would like to include a personal note, please send it to [email protected] or, you may sign the group cards now located in the Narthex or later at the picnic.
SAINTS ALIVE!
Saints Alive! is back in September! On September 24th, at 6:00 p.m., we will meet at the home of Loni and Jimmy Harris. Their address is 162 Old Stage Road, Jackson. Saints Alive! is a fun, casual gathering of the adults at St. Luke's. Everyone brings a dish to share and soft drinks are provided.

FROM THE REV. GAYLE MCCARTY Adult Christian Education
Our faith formation is lifelong and the work of an entire community. A few special individuals help us kick-off Adult Christian Education this September. Offerings begin at 9:30 a.m. sharp and end at 10:15 a.m. I hope that each of you will make it a priority for your faith journey to attend Adult Christian Education offerings this year.
Gary Wake’s Reflections Class continues. Conversation is based on the scripture readings for worship each week. This class meets in the library each Sunday. All are welcome.
OTHER OFFERINGS include:
Sept. 11 - A Tour of the Stained Glass Windows of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Back by popular demand! Join Johnathan Kendrick and Cody Blue Miller as they lead us on a walking tour of our beautiful windows. We gather and begin the tour in the Commons.
Sept. 18 – Episcopalese The Episcopal Church has a rich tradition and over time has inherited what many call a language of its own. We tend to forget that we often use words and terms that many do not know or understand. It can be as if we are speaking “in code” at times. Join The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads to learn about words we use in general and terms regarding church architecture, Eucharistic vessels, clergy vestments and more. This class meets in the Commons.
Sept. 25 – The History of The Episcopal Church Guest lecturer and friend of St. Luke’s, Dr. Daniel Pigg offers an engaging and informative lecture on the history of The Episcopal Church. It is an exhaustive subject but Dr. Pigg will present and discuss highlights and important turning points and people of the church. Dr. Pigg is Professor of English at U.T. Martin and regularly teaches courses in Religious Studies. He also teaches at Bethel University. He has a M.A.R. in Hebrew Bible and Modern and Post-Modern Theology from Memphis Theological Seminary and is completing his Master in Sacred Theology at Sewanee. Dr. Pigg is a communicant of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Memphis where he serves as a verger and has taught Lenten classes.

by John & Jackie Foxx
FROM YOUR SENIOR WARDEN by Jim Craig
Summer is fast coming to a close. Rally Day will be here before we
know it. Rally Day really begins the new church year for St Luke's.
Sunday school gets cranked up. Football weekends take the place of
weekends at the "lake". There always seems to be other things that keep
us away from church no matter what the season. We are already looking
to the annual parish meeting in a few months. Vestry elections will
occur. Please be thinking of either running for the vestry or getting your
"former" best friend to run. All joking aside, we need dedicated
parishioners who don't mind working for the betterment of our church
to step up and be counted. As you can see around the building, we are
keeping the place up and working. The property committee, lead by
Mary Nenarella, is doing a great job. Keep those pledges up to date.
FROM YOUR JUNIOR WARDEN by Tricia Odom
Two Proud Moments
Have you seen the video posted on Facebook that promotes Blue Strong? If not, you can find it on the church’s page at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church or on the BlueStrong Jackson/Madison County TN page. The video was made on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 outside of St. Luke’s and features St. Luke’s lit up in blue lights and also features our own Priest-in-Charge, Gayle McCarty, and County Mayor Jimmy Harris. St. Luke’s is proud to be the first church to lead the charge for the Blue Strong event which will take place in January 10, 2017. This event honors law enforcement officers and first responders and will be held at the Civic Center.
Sunday, August 14, 2016 marked a special day in the life of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and First United Methodist Church (FUMC). On this particular Sunday our Priest-in-Charge, Gayle McCarty, and Senior Pastor Dan Camp, Senior Minister at FUMC, exchanged pulpits. I am not sure if this has happened before, but hopefully it will happen again in the future.
If you missed the service, please take time to listen to the sermon on our website. I believe you will be inspired to attend any future pulpit swap. Gayle’s sermon is also available for listening on the FUMC website. Some people may be wondering “Whose Idea Was This Anyway?” Since these two downtown churches share in multiple ways through hosting events, working together on mission projects and in financial support of many of the same organizations; it only seemed fitting that sharing pulpits would be another way that we could work together. We are neighbors with the mission to bring people to Jesus Christ and to serve those in our neighborhood with the resources we are both so blessed to have. The idea of a pulpit swap was born from a conversation between Dan and Gayle and the rest is history!
The next vestry meeting will be Sunday, September 18th, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. in the Commons.
CONGRATULATIONS OF THE PARISH …

SNACK BACKPACK NEEDS FOR SEPTEMBER
The RIFA Snack-Backpack item this month is Microwave Popcorn.
SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads
Once again, St. Luke's Mission Partner of the Month is the Regional Interfaith Association (RIFA). RIFA has served the underserved in Jackson for 40 years, and for the past 7 years under the leadership of Lisa Tillman. Lisa's parents are from West Tennessee, but being an Air Force brat, she grew up all over. But she fondly remembers visiting her grandparents back in Jackson during the summers. It was on one of those visits to an old school friend that she met her husband, and she has lived in Jackson since.
About 10 years ago after a mission trip to Costa Rica, Lisa felt a call to mission. She had worked as Executive Director at the Oaks for about 10 years when she decided to take a position at Easter Seals. Unfortunately (or as the Holy Spirit would have it, FORTUNATELY) she was laid off after only one year. A friend brought it to Lisa's attention that Donna Vickers was retiring from RIFA, and that she should apply for the job. RIFA's Board of Directors hired Lisa as Executive Director in January of 2009.
I asked Lisa about RIFA's needs, and she was quick to answer, "Prayer, financial resources, in-kind resources, and volunteers. . . but we can never get enough prayers." The Outreach Committee of St. Luke's will continue to focus your attention on the needs of RIFA for volunteers in the Soup Kitchen and for Snack Backpack donations.
After 5 successful years of the ROAR program, a mentoring/tutoring program for K-12 kids operating out of Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church, the RIFA Board of Directors sadly had to suspend ROAR in May. They have also quit supplementing utilities and rent for people in financial need. But with a new strategic plan in the works, RIFA has become empowered to focus on what they do best: hunger alleviation. In addition to the continuing operation of the Soup Kitchen and food pantry, they are expanding the Snack Backpack program. They are beginning pilot food pantry programs at JCT and Rosehill schools this fall. And they are growing their relationship with the West Madison Senior Center in Denmark.
I asked Lisa to comment about her work at RIFA. She told me that even after being there for over 9 years, it is still a humbling experience to see that RIFA is Jackson's place, it is God's place, since 1976. "Even after all this time, it humbles me every day that Jackson is such a giving, loving place."
