MEMORIAL DAY

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK… As we celebrate this Memorial Day Weekend, we remember the men and women who have died and who have faithfully served Our Country. It is a time of remembrance and appreciation. This Sunday, as a Parish, we will remember these men and women as well as our own parish members at our Memorial Day Mass at the 11:00AM Mass, and following the Mass we will have our Outdoor Memorial Day Ceremony and Flag Raising at our Veteran’s Memorial Garden. This year’s Flag is donated by Cheryl Fortier and Pam Fortier Burl in memory of Paul Dupre, father and grandfather, who was an Army Veteran of World War II. Our Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will participate along with a wreath laying and firing squad. Thanks to our parishioner - Bob Ragone for coordinating our Program each year! Special thanks to our Girl Scouts under the direction of Pat O’Connor, who also leads us in the singing of our National Anthem, and our Boy Scouts under the direction of Joe Muto and Holly Trottier. We also thank those from our American Legion who join us for military honors. One of the ways we can teach our children the importance of faith and country, is to teach them to honor the flag of Our Country and the men and women who have served or are serving our country in military service! The month of May has been designated “Military Appreciation Month”. We continue to remember the men and women whose names have been given to us for the Military Prayer Basket on the Altar. If anyone has the name of someone to be remembered who is currently serving in the military – please drop their name in the collection basket at Mass or call the Parish Office. We also remember this weekend all Military Chaplains, especially Fr. James Longe who is currently deployed. May God bless him and all Chaplains who bring God to our men and women in service! I think I can safely say that all those who participated in the Westfield Flat Fast 5K Race/Walk last Saturday had a great time! We had 50 people on our Parish Team, and many more of our parishioners who are affiliated with other groups and who participated on other Teams in the race. Special thanks to our parishioner - Mike Tierney who coordinates the race, and to our Parish Team Captains – Pete and Anne Fratini. Also thanks to all of you who took the time to come out and cheer on our Team – we appreciate your support! As you know $5 of every Registration goes to our designated charity – The Westfield Soup Kitchen. Also there was a collection of canned goods for the Soup Kitchen at the “Fitness Expo” which took place the day before the race. I know the Soup Kitchen will be grateful as always, that we designate them as our Parish Charity to support through the race! Those of you that signed up to support the Parish Team in the race through a pledge, can drop your donation in the collection basket in the weeks ahead or drop it off at the Parish Office. Checks should be made payable to “The Westfield Soup Kitchen” or “OLBS” and we will forward to them. The collection of donated items for our Parish Indoor Tag Sale June 2-4 is well underway! Many “treasures” have been pouring into the Parish Center over the last 2 weeks. WE NEED MORE DONATED ITEMS! Please see the bulletin for details about time and days for drop off of items, or if you need “pick-up”, call Ron Gerlip at 413-579-8792. My sincere thanks again to Ron and Linda Gerlip for coordinating this Tag Sale and spending many hours at the Parish Center sorting and pricing items! This year’s Tag Sale will benefit OUR PARISH, so please participate as a “giver” or a “buyer”! Finally, once again, I am very grateful for all of the donations that have come in for Deacon Barrent’s Vestment that we are planning to give to him as a gift from the Parish! We have now paid for the vestment with a little extra besides. The vestment and any additional gifts will be given to Barrent along with a list of those who contributed! Please consider also supporting Deacon Barrent in prayer by attending the special Eucharistic Holy Hour for Vocations at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield on the Friday evening before the Ordination from 6:00-7:00PM. This will be an opportunity to pray for an increase of vocations to the Priesthood in our Diocese which is so desperately needed at this time. Deacon Barrent is our only Priesthood Ordination this Year! I also hope many of you are planning to attend Deacon Barrent’s Ordination to support him from our Parish! We have a nice King Ward Bus reserved! Parking at the Cathedral is tight for such big events – so take the bus – but please call Sue in the Parish Office as soon as possible to reserve a seat. The next day is Deacon Barrent’s Mass of Thanksgiving here in our church at 2:00PM with a Reception to follow. Yes, though a bit longer, the Mass at 2:00 will fulfill the Sunday Mass 0914 3

ADORATIONAdoration will be held Thursday, June 2nd beginning after the 7:00AM service until 8:00PM. The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. “From among all the proofs of the infinite goodness of our Savior none stands out more prominently than the fact that, as the love of the faithful grew cold, He, Divine Love Itself, gave Himself to us to be honored by a very special devotion and that the rich treasury of the Church was thrown wide open in the interest of that devotion,” Pope Pius XI. Devotion in its present form dates from revelations given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673-75. The devotion consists in the divine worship of the human heart of Christ, which is united to His divinity and which is a symbol of His love for us. The aim of the devotion is to make our Lord, king over our hearts by prompting them to return love to Him.

Hail! O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and quickening source of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, and burning furnace of divine love. You are my refuge and sanctuary, O my amiable Savior. Consume my heart with that burning fire with which Yours is ever inflamed. Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love and let my heart be so united with Yours, that our wills may be one, and mine in all things be conformed to Yours. May Your divine will be equally the standard and rule of all of my desires and of all my actions. AMEN.

Pope Francis’ intention for June is that national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people.

LETTER FROM BISHOP ROZANSKI“Love, by its nature, is communication.”—Pope Francis, Message for 50th World

Communications Day, 2016

May 3, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Soon our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). This collection helps bring the gospel message to the public square so that all can know the love of God. Pope Francis has reminded us that “communication has the power to build bridges, to enable encounter and inclusion, and thus to enrich society” (World Communications Day Message, 2016). Your support of this collection helps to enrich society and to invite all to encounter the love of God.

For example, as people continue to access more and more information on mobile devices, there is an increased need to provide faith resources on these platforms as well. With your support of the CCC, the daily readings are available as free podcasts to download and listen to on the go. In addition, the readings are also available in English and Spanish by email subscription. By supporting the CCC, people across the country are able to experience the Scriptures in a new way and are never far from the Word of God.

Half of the funds collected will remain here in the diocese to fund our local communications projects. The other half will fund national communications efforts as well as international projects in developing countries. For more information about the collection and the projects it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.

Support the collection and connect with Christ.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Mitchell T. RozanskiBishop of Springfield
