FROM THE PASTOR
The Liturgy of Lent
My Dear Brothers and Sisters, during the Season of Lent austere is the watchword for our liturgical celebrations. The Church hasproclaimed a time of fasting and self-denial and by the example of the liturgical settings teaches us how to celebrate this season. The color purple or violet predominates the liturgical season in the altar cloths, the priest vestments and the banners that hang inchurch. The purple or violet is the portentous color of affliction and mortification. Only on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, LaetareSunday, as we saw last week, is there a break when we may choose the more festive option of the color rose for the altar cloth, vestments and some flowers. The sanctuary during Lent is kept simple and unadorned except for the cacti which remind us of thedesert experience of prayer and fasting. During the season the Gloria is not prayed for almost all of Lent until the Holy Thursdaycelebration. Also, the Alleluia is absent during the season until the Holy Triduum.
The celebrations of the season, even for feast days of saints, are observed in a reduced manner with the priest wearing the purpleof the season rather than the red or white of the saint. By this penitential fast of the senses, Holy Mother Church prepares our heartsfor the jubilation of renewal at Easter. Of course there are two exceptions to this rule. They are the Solemnities of the Feasts ofSt. Joseph and the Annunciation when white vestments are worn and the Gloria may be recited. The Solemnity of St. Joseph, thePatron Saint of the Universal Church and the foster father of Jesus is a feast of the highest rank. On the Solemnity of theAnnunciation we celebrate a feast that propels us into the Christmas mystery. Jesus, the Savior, who will shortly give his life forour sins, is this day conceived in the Virgin Mary’s womb. Her “Yes” to an angel, will undo the subjection of sin caused by Eve’s“yes” to a fallen-angel. This is indeed the most sublime moment in the history of time.
The Scripture readings of the Lenten Liturgies gives us daily lessons based on three major themes. The first three weeks calls usto repentance and to the practice of virtue, though the Church will suspend her penitential readings on Laetare Sunday, the midwaypoint of the Lenten journey, to rejoice that Easter is near. The second theme that threads its way through the seasonal readings isthe instruction of the faithful who are preparing for Easter renewal of their Baptismal promises. The final scriptural theme unfoldingin the last two weeks of Lent is the mounting opposition of the Jews toward Christ. The sixth and final Sunday of Lent (Passionor Palm Sunday) will usher in Holy Week, the greatest and holiest of all weeks. The Liturgies of Holy Week and the SacredTriduum are so rich and so important that they must be expounded upon by themselves as we draw near their celebration.
The various readings put before our eyes many Old Testament characters and events that prefigure Christ and the Paschal Mystery: Christ is the new Adam, and he is the Isaac of the New Covenant; the Church is the new Ark which saves mankind through thewaters of Baptism, etc.
Casino Night
We had a wonderful Casino Night on Saturday. In spite of the rain we had a full house and everyone had a great time. It was niceto see such a nice mix of the parish from young to the “more mature.” It was especially nice for our young couples with childrenas our Youth Ministry and its members volunteered to baby sit. The children had a fun night and the parents had a great night out.
We would like to thank Claudia Carroll who chaired the committee and Bill Carroll who was the co-chair of the committee. Everything ran as smooth as it could from decorations to the food to the entertainment and the prizes. There were 54 gift basketswon by the ‘gamblers” and 12 door prizes.
Special thanks to the members of the Casino Committee: Debbie Agnello, Anthony Baldini, Pat Marcinek, Cathy Russo, MollySheldon and Maureen Theisz. The Gift Baskets Committee; Patty Kohlreiter, Georgene Panza, Cathy Russo and MarianneScardino. The Set-up and Take Down Committee of the Marian Center; Bill Carroll, Bob Frank, Willene McGovern, Brian Mulroy,Paul Scardino, Kevin Sheldon, Joe Soccodato, Bill Theisz, George Tool and Rich Trunfio.
We also wish to thank “In Rhythm Entertainment” our D.J.’s, our own Matt DeCaux and his partner Mike Skwiat who donated theirservices for the evening. And of course we thank our Youth Ministry members who came for the night and ran the baby sitting forthe evening.
May God bless you.
