Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians From the Desk of Fr. Tim
St. Mary of the Assumption has truly been blessed to have the Knights of Columbus (Council # 14722) as a dedicated and vital organization within the parish. Their generosity in volunteering for any project and assisting us financially in so many ways has been a gift that has been multiplied many times over, and as we prepare to merge into our new parish I can’t imagine starting this up without them. During this month of May, dedicated to the Mother of God, we are again blessed through our association with the Knights of Columbus to host for two weeks an icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians which you may notice is prominently displayed on a tripod behind the altar. This icon is a copy of the original icon created by Italian artist Fabrizio Diomedi and is one of dozens of icons blessed at a Mass on August 8, 2018, at the 136 th Supreme Convention in Baltimore. These icons, through the sponsorship of the Knights of Columbus, are traveling from parish to parish throughout our country and the world to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by persecuted Christians and to inspire support for our brothers and sisters in Christ. An “icon” is different from a painting or portrait, and there are very specific rules that must followed in creating one. Often called a “window to heaven” the religious icon is a piece of artwork used in prayer. Therefore, while creating the icon the artist must be committed to praying and fasting. An icon must be painted on wood, not canvas, and the iconographer adds layers of paints, with darker colors applied last, so that light seems to come from within the image. This represents the unseen God’s glory breaking through from heaven. And since in the early Church, when many could not read or write, icons were a vis-ual way to teach others (like stained glass) about God and the saints. Because of this, in the tradition of the Eastern Church, one does not “paint” an icon, one “writes” an icon, because the icon is speaking to us and telling us a truth about our faith or a story. In this copy of the icon commissioned by the Knights of Columbus, Mary, Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, is speaking to us through her eyes. As the Mother of God, she offers Jesus to us while He is portrayed as coming from her heart and womb. At the same time she has opened her mantle and under the protection of her royal blue and green (symbolizing “hope”) mantle she is gathering men, women and children who have been martyred for their faith in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is estimated that in the 20th century alone more Christians have been martyred by the Nazis and the Communists and ISIS and lynch mobs in India than all the Christians martyred in the first three centuries of Christianity. Under Mary’s mantle we recognize St. Maximillian Kolbe who died in Auschwitz, one of the Lybian martyrs in his orange jumpsuit executed by ISIS, one of the French Trappists martyred in Algeria, and St. Luis al Royo, the 14 year old boy who died for his faith in Mexico in the 1920’s. After the battle of this life, they will rejoice forever with Jesus and Mary, bearing the palm branches of victory that we see at the top of the icon. The Knights of Columbus hope that this icon will inspire all of us to stand strong in our faith and to continue our efforts to protect the free practice of religion throughout the world. This icon is part of the Knight’s ongoing mission of charity to Christians in the Middle East, to whom they have committed more than $20 million since 2014, providing food, shelter and clothing to Christians who have no one else to take care of them and who are isolated and suffering only because of their Christian faith.
Flea Market Update
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have no choice but to cancel the St. Mary Flea Market schedule for July. We know this is a disappointment to many of our workers, customers and those of you who have spent the quarantine cleaning out your closets, drawers and basements. In addition, the Flea Market is a large source of income to the Parish which has already had to cancel many other fund raisers.
We are currently exploring the idea of a “virtual” flea market using social media to sell donated items. This will not produce the usual income of the Flea Market as we will only be able to accept items that we can sell on internet sites and not be able to accept some of the smaller items such as plastics, glassware, knick-knacks, linens, mugs or other small items but it will provide some much-needed revenue to St. Mary Parish on an ongoing basis.
Our main issue is we need some place to store the
donations. Do you have a large garage, barn or storage shed you could lend us for a couple of months? We promise to be out of it by next summer
and we will leave it in better shape than we found it! Please call either Theresa Benedek at 412-486-4787 or Kate DiGirolamo at 412-901-8081 if you can help
us. We are excited for the opportunity to offer a virtual St. Mary of the Assumption Flea Market in 2020!
Faith Formation Students at St. Mary
Keep praying with the gospels and activities given in your Pflaum lessons and/or textbooks through the end of August. Lessons completed are to be returned in the Black container by the glass doors at the back of our school building May 18-20, from 9:00 am - 8:00 pm. Please return the postcard you received along with the lessons.
Faith Sharing Sixth Sunday of Easter These weeks of the quarantine have many feeling abandoned. Jesus promised his followers, “I will not leave you orphans. I will send an Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, to be with you always.” In light of facts that are being reported in the “fake news”, we need the Spirit of Truth in a big way now. Pray furi-ously for our Divine Advocate to prevail.
Rice Bowls Returned Rice Bowl donations totaled $914.38. This has been sent to Catholic Relief Services to help families in need in the most desperate areas of our world where they minister. Thank you for the sacrifices you made to give life for others.
Confirmation and First Eucharist Families with candidates who have been preparing for the sacraments are patiently waiting for the lifting of the quarantine restrictions on our churches. Pray for the candidates as they eagerly await the coming of Jesus in Eucharist and the strengthening of His Holy Spirit in Confirmation.
Did You Know?
BTA How are your children being engaged through their learning during this unprecedented time? At Blessed Trinity Academy, our students are still engaging in rigorous course work 5 days a week. Teachers are using Google Meets, research, presentations, videos and other methods to create a dynamic learning experience for our students so that they are prepared to move on to the next grade level at the end of the school year. BTA is now accepting registrations for the 2020-2021 school year. If you are interested in learning more about BTA and what we can offer your family, call 412-606-6197 or email [email protected] to set up an informational Zoom meeting.

Gender Reveal at Only Eight Weeks
Are you having a GIRL or a BOY or a clump of cells?
Did you know that parents have a choice to know their child’s gender much earlier than ever today? Instead of waiting for a sonogram
like in the recent past, with just a small blood test, mom and dad can now know the gender of a baby at only 8 weeks into the pregnancy! The new test uses cells from the baby which are naturally released into the mother’s bloodstream. It’s the latest way to get an accurate view on whether you should expect Touchdowns or Tutus… SO – instead of talking about aborting a clump of cells, a fetus or even an unborn child, let’s be clear: EVERY abortion takes the life of a little BOY or a little GIRL and deprives a family of LOVE. 40 Days for Life February 29, 2020
61 Million Babies Have Died in Abortions
Since Roe v. Wade
Nearly 900,000 abortions occur each year–more than 32,000 in Pennsylvania alone. That is the equivalent of a city, wiped out in one year by abortion. It was the single U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade which has claimed more lives than all the wars America has ever fought. When the High Court issued its ruling in 1973, who could have predicted the massive death toll from abortion more than 47 years later? https://www.lifenews.com/2020/03/09/61-million-babies-have-died-in-abortions-since-roe-v-wade-its-time-to-end-abortion/
Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood Staffer Coughs on Pro-Life People Praying Outside,
Prompting Coronavirus Fears
Blatantly ignoring the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, one very angry Planned Parenthood worker in Pittsburgh intentionally coughed on 40 Days for Life vigil participants. Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh is angry because our amazing, tireless leader Nikki leads a great vigil and has for over a decade.
In fact, the vigil participant who was coughed on by the Planned Parenthood employee saved a baby YESTERDAY! Nikki has saved hundreds of lives over the years out of love and mercy, and love and mercy always overcome hate–even in the midst of a pandemic. https://www.lifenews.com/2020/03/17/planned-parenthood-staffer-coughs-on-pro-life-people-praying-

35 years ago, on Mother's Day, they opened their doors in a small house in Wexford. Four little lives were saved in 1985. One year later, the Monroeville Center opened, also on Mother's Day. Since then, they’ve grown in to 4 Pittsburgh locations serving thousands each year and have seen over 7500 little lives rescued from abortion. These are documented lives--heaven only knows the actual number! A lot has changed but the mission to reach women and men with the good news of the Gospel has remained the same.

Updates
Details About Yellow Phase This past Thursday, Bishop Zubik met with all of the priests to discuss what the Yellow Phase of quarantine means for the church. Unfortunately, the bulletin deadline did not allow for those updates to be posted here. Please check the website for updates. We will continue to follow all of the mandates Governor Wolf has for Yellow Phase. We do know that whatever lies ahead will not be the same as it was before. Take the new opportunities offered with caution. Our hope and prayers are that everyone stays healthy as we move forward.
Ascension Thursday This Thursday, May 21, is Ascension Thursday, a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be livestreamed at 9:00 am. Check the website for details, espe-cially after the updates from Bishop Zubik.
