Thanksgiving in August by Fr. Tim

Sometimes we forget, when we have to go back to our car to get our mask in order to shop at Giant Eagle, that Covid-19 is affecting not only our lives locally but the lives of every human being on this planet. In a twisted sort of way this common experience has united us and brought us all a little closer. We have a personal understanding of the fear and the pain that others are feeling in Africa and Asia and Europe as we are all trying our best to live our lives under these circumstances. Everyone is living under the same conditions. No one is exempt. No one is spared.

And so it is important, in the midst of this pandemic, to just pause and recognize that the Holy Spirit is more powerful than this virus, and although the disease is crippling the economy, it has no power over love. It cannot prevent others from performing acts of charity and kindness. Thanksgiving Day is still a few months away, but I would like to just draw attention to how we have been blessed both at St. Ursula and St. Mary’s as we come closer together to form our new parish.

Charlotte Bossong was the Faith Formation Director (CCD) at St. Ursula for 29 years and when she passed away recently her family met with me and asked if there was anyway that they could make a gift to the parish that she loved and had served so faithfully for so long. Charlotte never missed Sunday Mass, even when she was on oxygen and using a walker, and that led to the idea of making the parking lot entrance to the church more handicap accessible by installing automatic doors. One thing led to another and with the additional help of some anonymous donors the project has been completed not only for the church but the main entrance of the church hall. All you have to do is press a button now and the doors will open for you. We are all grateful also to faithful parishioner Jim McGuire who generously installed these doors and can be guaranteed that he put a lot of love into the installation. If it weren’t for Charlotte there wouldn’t be any doors, and if it weren’t for Jim the doors wouldn’t open.

And if we are talking about love, you could certainly taste it in the sauce that Nina Dongilli and Barb LaPore made for the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser that we had at St. Mary’s two weeks ago and that raised $3,600. Everyone raved about not only the quality but the quantity of the pasta. We are so grateful for so many parishioners that have continued to support the parish and pay off our Parish Share assessment, but without the help of our Fish Fry and Summer Festival and Flea Market our budget has a huge hole in it, and we are trying to balance it with new initiatives like raffles and these dinners. At St. Mary’s, none of these initiatives would succeed without the manpower provided by our Knights of Columbus, and their hands and feet made sure that every dinner was delivered. After this success, stay tuned for more dinners to come. And I might add that we have a raffle going on at St. Ursula that will be drawn on St. Ursula’s feast day, October 21, and Jan Kowalski has overseen something new, a Farmer’s Market in the lower parking lot of St. Ursula every Thursday, 4:00 – 6:30 PM.

And so, yes, Covid-19 has changed the way that we do many things, but it has no power over the Holy Spirit that is in the hearts of all believers, and for that we can’t wait till Thanksgiving Day to say thank you.

Faith Sharing 22ndSunday in Ordinary Time Jesus called Peter “Satan” for he failed to see the logic of the cross and suffering, through which God brought hope and new life. The challenges with the covid epidemic is our call to trust that God is our hope and leading us to new life. “Take up your cross” and follow Jesus’ lead.

Faith Formation Continues for Your Family by using

the “Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families” 2019-20 book pages 112-113. When you take time to extend your arms, your body is the shape of a cross. Walk it with Jesus.

Anyone wishing to order the 2020-2021 “Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families” booklet, please call the St. Mary Faith Formation office at 412-486-5521. Which Way Do I Go? High school youth ministry will take a deeper look into relationship with Christ this semester. Our world is forever changing, but our God never changes. Jesus is the way to the kingdom. Let’s unfold the life of Christ and feed the soul. Immerse Yourself In The Life Of Christ The marvelous treasures of the Catholic Faith - the Eucharist, Mary, the Saints, and the Creed - all are centered on a single figure: Jesus Christ. Jesus is more than a historical or theological figure. He is our Savior, our Redeemer, our Lord, and our God. While many of us know a lot about him already, how well can we really say we know him? Jesus: The way, the truth, and the life is a new and fresh look at Jesus - who he is, what he is really like, what he taught, and what he did for our salvation. This encounter with Christ will inspire and empower you (the teen) to center his or her life around him as they come to know and love him in an ever deeper and more intimate way. High school ministry meets Sunday 7:00 - 9:00 pm Aug 30: Session one - “Jesus and History” Sept 1: OFF Labor Day Weekend
