Letter From Fr. Tim

Holy Week and the Invisible Enemy We’ve heard it said so many times, “Jesus died to save us from our sins.” But to a lot of people who claim to be Christian the words mean very little and fail to stir up in their hearts any emotion or sense of gratitude. It is almost as if somebody said, “Franklin Roosevelt lead our country to victory in World War II.” It is a historical fact and we know that what he did was important, but it seems like it was so long ago and we have forgotten the sacrifices that it took to win the war and we fail to understand how different our lives would be if we had lost the war.

“Sin” is very similar to the Coronavirus that is sweeping across the world today. It is not something that you can see or touch or even smell but it is very real. You can have it and not even realize it. You can be making others sick because of your sin and not even know how you are affecting their lives. And for some people the virus can be deadly (mortal sin) but for others it might have much less palpable effects (venial sin), at least at this time.

But there are three types of disease. One type of disease impacts the way our bodies function, like cancer or Convid 19. Another type of disease affects the way our minds operate, like mental illness or addiction. And the third type of disease destroys our hearts and our ability to love ourselves and others and God, and that is sin.

People are terrified of physical diseases like ALS or mental disease like Alzheimer’s but they fail to understand how much pain they can experience or how much pain they can inflict on others by the Seven Deadly Sins.

Everyone is hoping and praying for a vaccine or antidote that will provide the world with a cure for this deadly virus. It has already wreaked so much heartbreak and misery. Try to imagine if this virus would never go away because it was impossible to find a cure. Imagine the despair if year after year it returned and claimed more lives. Like never before, the world would be praying for a Savior. And Jesus was the Savior that was sent by a loving God to save us from the “heart virus” that we call “sin”.

The antidote for this virus we call sin was extremely costly. It could only be procured by an act of extreme love, love unto death. This act of sacrificial love and obedience is the exact opposite of sin and so it becomes the cure for this virus of the heart. And so every year, during Holy Week, we remember the One who brought us the cure for sin and what it cost Him to give us this remedy. The Eucharist reminds us of that sacrifice of love, and all He asks is that when we eat His Body and drink His Blood we remember what He did to save us from the virus of sin and how much He still loves us. There is no cost for this priceless vaccine, the Eucharist, only a grateful, loving heart.

A Prayer Amid an Epidemic by Kerry Weber

Holy Lord Jesus, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders. Holy Lord Jesus, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers, and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Holy Lord Jesus, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Holy Lord Jesus, heal us.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above

all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as

You are already there; I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be

separated from You. Amen

What is spiritual communion? St. Thomas Aquinas described it as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament and lovingly embrace him” at a time or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in sacramental Communion.

A Spiritual Communion can be said at anytime of the day.
