St. Mary Providence Hall Dedication

The St. Mary’s Church Alive Campaign Team would like to thank members the Saint Mary of the Assumption parish who assisted in the renovation of Providence Hall. The purpose of this newly designed space is to enhance our faith community by providing a comfortable and welcoming space to gather and collaborate. Three new meeting/conference rooms are up to date and have state of the art audiovisual equipment to enhance meetings.

We would like to recognize and thank parishioner Tom Bittner who gave countless hours and invaluable expertise as general contractor and Jeff Pflumm and Dave Wilson, our maintenance men, who accomplished the bulk of the work.

Our deep appreciation goes to the five hundred parish family members who contributed the funding of the renovation through the Church Alive Campaign.

Please come join us on February 2, 2020, after the 9:00 Mass to dedicate and celebrate this new space.

YOUTH MINISTRY St. Mary School News

Home with the Lord St. Mary & St. Ursula

Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Gavin Cannon, James W. Szymanski and Charles E. Blatz. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones. Looking Ahead to the Lenten Season Plan to nourish your soul with: Work, Play, Love: How the Mass Changed the Life of the First Christians. “Christians make the Mass, and the Mass makes Christians.” So said the Martyrs of Abitina, North Africa, in A.D. 304. The Mass was the reality most essential to the life of believers, and it deeply affected everything they did. In Work, Play, Love, popular author from Pittsburgh, PA, Mike Aquilina shows how the Eucharist shaped three basic dimensions of life for the early Christians. Work - as they worshipped they consecrated the world itself to God. Play - using a day that was a Roman workday for leisurely, creative response to God. Love - collection for the sick and poor led to the creation of universal charity, a first in the world.

The book may be purchased through Saint Mary Faith Formation Office. Discounts on the original $12.99 per copy will be given for orders of five or more copies. RSVP NOW if you will like to purchase a copy. Call 412-486-5521 or e-mail [email protected] Consider signing up to be part of a discussion group at one of the times listed: “The Mass makes our lives whole. All the useful work we do is bound up in it. All our playful joys comes out of it. All our Christian love funnels through it.”

St. Mary Faith Formation Faith Sharing for The Presentation of the Lord

A man named Simeon received the offering of the poor, a pair of pigeons brought by Joseph and Mary as they followed the law and presented Jesus in the temple, forty days after his birth. He was recognized as “LIGHT to the gentiles, and GLORY to the people of Israel.” How do you recognize Jesus in your day to day endeavors?

February 14 Gather + Share Lunch

The February Gather + Share lunch falls on Valentine's Day! Therefore, the theme for the lunch is "red" food (e.g., chicken parmesan, red velvet cake - which are already on the menu!). In addition, we'll be raffling off a red velvet cake. This is the last lunch before Lent; meager meals begin on February 28. So we're looking to make the Gather + Share lunch a feast before Lent begins. The lunch begins at noon in the Social Hall. All are welcome to attend. The suggested donation is $5 per person. Additional chefs are always welcome to add some-thing to the table. Please contact Jan Kowalski for menu coor-dination at 412-654-4721.

A Christmas Reprise

The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Road To God There is but one road to lead us to God—humility; all other ways would only lead astray, even were they fenced in with all virtues. ~ Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux
