Pray for Lauren
On Friday morning, May 24, after the 7:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s everyone attending that Mass participated in praying for and blessing one of our young adults, Lauren Schifano, as she prepared to fly to Spain for a two week walking pilgrimage on the famed El Camino. Lauren is one of our Millennial adults who has become very active in her faith as a result of participating in our Alpha program and who felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to do something special to help her grow in her faith and prepare her for the future that lies ahead of her. El Camino, which is Spanish for “The Way,” is a tradition that developed among Christians in the Middle Ages. Pilgrims used to begin in Paris at the church of St. James and walk for hundreds of miles to Santiago de Compostela to the tomb and burial place of St. James the Great, one of the twelve apostles. During the French Revolution the Church of St. James was destroyed (although its bell tower still stands) and now for those who want to participate in this sacred tradition the starting point is in the foothills of the French Pyrenees and the full walking pilgrimage extends for 500 miles. Most people, however, for the sake of time, just do a one or two week portion of the pilgrimage. Lauren has chosen a two week portion of El Camino which amounts to about 200 miles. A majority of people go in groups or with one or two others, but she has chosen to make this pilgrimage alone, and as you read this she will be beginning the last 100 miles of her spiritual journey, walking about 15 miles a day with a 20 lb. backpack. I’m hoping that our prayers will support her and give her the divine energy that she needs to bring her Spirit inspired journey to a completion. I was with a group of young adults in Santiago de Compostela a few years ago, and it is awesome to witness the welcoming ceremony that is prepared for the pilgrims, which sometimes number in the thousands, as they cross the finish line of their spiritual marathon at the tomb of St. James. For Lauren it will be even more awesome because she will be arriving at the shrine on the feast of Pentecost. I can’t imagine how powerful an ending this will be for her and a spiritual experience she will never forget. So I’m asking everyone to just lift her up and support her with daily prayer as she has promised to pray for us along The Way. I’m really envious of Lauren because the seminarians at St. Vincent’s and I were hoping to do this together before I was reassigned to St. Mary’s, but when she returns to us, we are hoping that she will be able to share some of her experiences with us. Incidentally, if you are interested in learning more about this awesome tradition of our Catholic faith, there was a movie produced in 2010, starring Martin Sheen, and titled, what else, The Way.

Holy Father’s Prayer Intention for June, 2019
Evangelization: That pr iests, through the modesty and humility of their lives, commit themselves actively to a solidarity with those who are most poor.
Father, They Are Your Gift To Me
In the creation story we are told that God made human beings “in His image.” This doesn’t mean that we are exact clones or identical twins of God, but rather that each
of us, in light of our unique gifts and characteristics, are created to reflect the vibrant life and loving face of God to others. God’s hand in our lives doesn’t end in creating us. Throughout our lives God gives us purpose and fills us with the gifts we need to fulfill that purpose. The challenge for us is to know ourselves as God knows us, as his gifts in the world to share his light and life with others. Through prayer and in humility we are invited to see clearly God’s will for our lives and all he has provided for us so that his will and our lives may be complete. God hasn’t randomly or thoughtlessly placed us in this world to create a reality for ourselves. He has sent us into the world with a specific task in mind that we might love others and build up his kingdom in the Church, making it ever more Alive! Pastoral Impressions from Father Tim and the Parish Finance Council
Dear Fellow Parish Members, We recently received the St. Mary Parish financial statements for the 1st nine months of the 2018/19 Fiscal Year from the Diocesan Financial Services Office. Therefore, we want to provide an update to you as soon as possible. The Parish’s financial health has deteriorated further since our last report. The significant decline in Total Revenue, in-cluding the weekly Offertory Collections, has continued. This trend has a serious impact on the Parish’s financial health and the ability to carry out our Mission. Options to increase revenues and further reduce expenses are being formulated If we are unable to reverse this trend. The following table summarizes the financial results for the 1st nine months of the Fiscal Year.
Operating Revenues were approx. $784,000 or $142,000 (15%) below Budget and $178,000 (18%) lower than the Prior Year period. Total Collections at Offertory were $81,000 (10%) below Budget and $107,000 (13%) lower than the Prior Year. Other Operating Revenue, including Donations & Bequests are also lower versus Budget ($60,000) and versus Prior Year ($70,000). On a positive note, while not reflected in the above results due to the timing of the Easter season, the Lenten Fish Dinners were again a success and generated net income of approx. $24,000. Thank you for your contin-ued support of this activity. Operating Expenses were approx. $733,000 or $14,000 (2%) above Budget, and $31,000 (4%) higher than Prior Year. The increase versus Budget excludes reimbursement for certain January to March expenses received in April. The in-crease versus Prior Year period reflects higher staff costs after two years of holding this expense flat. Consequently, the Parish generated a Gross Operating Surplus of approx. $51,000. This was $156,000 (75%) lower than the Budget and $209,000 (80%) smaller than Prior Year. The Parish subsidy to Blessed Trinity Academy was approx. $166,000 or 21% of Operating Revenues. The Subsidy is $16,000 (11%) above Budget, but $88,000 (35%) lower than Prior Year. Therefore, the Parish had a Net Operating Deficit of approx. $116,000. This excludes the recent major repair to the church air conditioning system, which totaled $68,000. Hopefully, our insurance policy will cover this expenditure. Contributions to the 2019 Parish Share Program (PSP) through May 19 totaled approx. $106,000 against our assessment of $148,000. We thank all of you for your continued support of the 2019 PSP. Continued transparency of the Parish’s financial situation is very important, as we progress through the transition period of merging St. Mary’s and St. Ursula’s parishes. We hope this report helps everyone obtain a clearer view of our Parish financial situation. We thank you for your past support of our Parish and its mission. We again ask you to consider an increase to your weekly Offertory Collection to mitigate the decline mentioned above. Please reach out to members of the Parish Finance Council with any questions.
