our mission

As God’s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God’s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by

the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ.

Today’s flowers are given in honor of & in gratitude for the Flower Guild for their beautiful work.

A Note from the Senior Warden

My fellow Parishioners,

It is with shock and sadness that we received the news of Christine’s decision to take her leave from Trinity. I also felt a profound sense of loss. Not only a deep sadness for what Christine and her family are going through, but a feeling that what promised to be a time of growth and renewal at Trinity was now halted by the untimely news.

In my 20 years at Trinity, we have faced many challenges, and it seems that personal losses are at times the most difficult to bear and comprehend. The life of this parish is organic and the heart of Trinity expands and yes, sometimes contracts in response to community life changes. The coming and going of clergy, and also of parishioners over time affects us all that form the communal heart of our beloved Trinity… This breathing, living, joyful and at times mournful community, experiences the breadth of human emotions and those experiences are always infused with the promise of the Holy Spirit ever transforming us as we make our way together.

In the weeks ahead, your Vestry and I will work diligently to discern new interim clergy leadership for our parish. I am confident that God will show us the way, opening the doors, helping us discern among the many paths and making the way known for us. The promise of growth and renewal will continue to unfold.

Please keep the parish, clergy, and the lay leadership of Trinity and Christine in your prayers as we make our way forward.

Claude GarciacelaySenior Warden of the Vestry

SCIENCE & RELIGIONMonday, June 5, 7-8:30pm, Guild HallDr. Robert C. Richard presents “Experiencing Awe: An Opening to the Transcendent.” Most of us have had experiences that have filled us with awe. Yet this fairly common and often powerful experience has been little studied by the scientific community. What is awe? How might it be related to an experience of transcendent realities and of God? Is this an unique human phenomenon? These are questions we will explore through use of visual aids and sharing. Dr. Richard holds advanced degrees in theology and pastoral counseling, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and is the co-founder of the Science and Religion Study Group. An offering will be received. For further information, contact Dr. Richard at [email protected] or 805-680-5590.

TRINITY READS Adult Formation’s recommended follow-up book to our Lenten series is America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis, forward by Brian Stevenson. “Jim Wallis, the nation’s preeminent evangelical prophetic teacher and preacher, sends a tough love letter to America, demanding and daring the church not only to repent of the ‘original sin’ of racism but to join the fight against all forms of racial injustice. I encourage everyone who is concerned about our democracy and who desires to see the church live out its true mission of love and justice to read this prophetic epistle.” (Otis Moss III, Trinity United Christ, Chicago, Illinois). Available at Chaucer’s and Amazon.

about pledging

Our vision of Stewardship recognizes that God is the giver and has blessed each one of us with many gifts. Common to us all is the privilege and blessing of how we use the precious gifts of our time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is the spiritual practice of discerning the use of these gifts in building God’s dream of love and justice in our hearts, relationships and world. At Trinity we call your gift of time and talent Shared Ministry and we call your gift of treasure a pledge. Pledge forms are available at the Welcome Table.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Eucharist is rooted in the tradition of the Jewish Table Meal?

began under King Henry VIII with the break from Rome, however it was not until the short reign of Henry’s son, King Edward VI, that some of the ideas of the reformation took hold. Guided by Cranmer’s desire for people to have

the World, who bringest forth bread from the forth bread from the earth.” Then the bread is broken and all get a piece. The blessing hallows the food on the table. The food is part of the ongoing creation in which people take part by eating it. After the meal, the cup with wine is blessed like the bread and handed round. The bread, wine and fellowship at the table express thanks and praise for God through prayer and symbolic action. Jesus saw organizing fellowship meals as part of his divine ministry.

The head of the family or the host speaks a blessing over the bread at the beginning of the meal: ”Blessed be thou, Eternal One, Our God,
