London Schools’ Cross Country Championships

The Key Stage 3 & 4 Cross Country

teams had an important competition

last week in the London Schools’ Cross

Country Championships at Wormwood

Scrubs. Well done to all of the

students who participated so

well. A particular well done

to Theo Gaymes (Year 8) & Guy

Barnett (Year 8), Ben & Jacob

Harrison (Year 10) and Katie Balme

(Year 13) who all qualified to

represent Southwark and Kingsdale for

the English Schools’ Championships

to be held in Leeds later this term!

Under-14s Boys Basketball

In preparation for their London Youth Games 2nd Round

fixture next week, Kingsdale Under-14s Boys’ Basketball

Team took on Charter East Dulwich in a competitive friendly

on 1st February. After a difficult first quarter, Kingsdale

pulled back a significant

deficit with some excellent

three point shooting in the

third quarter and came away

comfortable winners with a

24-14 score. The team

demonstrated excellent

problem solving skills to overcome a zone defence, passed the

ball extremely well in the second half and defended even

better to close out the game. Top scorers were Kai

Drummond (Year 9) with 8 points and Rodrigo Saucedo

(Year 9) with 6 points. Well done boys!

Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents

Book Title: Caroline

Author: Neil Gaiman

Age Range: 12+

Why students should read it:

The day after they moved in,

Coraline went exploring....

In Coraline's new flat are

twenty-one windows and fourteen

doors. Thirteen of the doors open

and close. The fourteenth is locked,

and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline

unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another

house just like her own.

Only it's different.

At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is

better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter

around the bedroom, books whose pictures writhe and crawl

and shimmer & little dinosaur skulls that chatter their teeth. But

there's ‘another mother’, and ‘another father’, and they want

Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to

change her and never let her go.

Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the

mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to

fight with all her wits and all the tools she can find if she is to

save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself.

Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Neil Gaiman will

delight readers with his first novel for all ages.

HOUSE NEWS

To help raise the profile and awareness of being safe

online, the Kingsdale Community were engaged in a

range of different activities taking place in lessons, at

lunchtime and also assemblies for this year’s Safer

Internet Day which took place on Tuesday 5th

February 2019. Activities included students writing

‘pledges’ on how to abide by the guidelines which

govern usage of the Internet. The Year 10 Assembly

was delivered by one of the tutor groups and

focused on the whole issue around ‘consent’. The

week provided more opportunities to use the Safer

Internet Day 2019 national campaign to highlight

the positives of using new technologies, but also to

place a large emphasis on staying safe online. This

year’s campaign theme was ‘OUR INTERNET, OUR

CHOICE’; a pledge to make the internet a safe

environment to work within. For more information

about Safer Internet Day 2019, please follow the
