low-Cost or Free Child Health Care Coverage

for Children under age 19 who qualifyYour child can be covered for doctor visits, prescriptions,

hospital visits, dental care, vision care, immunizations, emergencies and other benefits.

Students who are chronically absent in the vital early grades of pre-K,

kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to be reading at grade level by

the end of third grade.

The Taste Test

We all know that some foods taste better than others but what gives us the ability to experience all these unique flavors? This simple experiment shows that there’s a lot more to taste than you might have first thought.

What you’ll need: a small piece of peeled potato and a small piece of peeled apple-same shape as the potato so you can’t tell the difference.

Instructions: Close your eyes and mix up the piece of potato and the piece of apple so you don’t know which is which. Hold your nose and eat each piece, can you tell the difference?

What’s happening? Holding your nose while tasting the potato and apple makes it hard to tell the difference between the two. Your nose and mouth are connected through the same airway which means that you taste and smell foods at the same time. Your sense of taste can recognize salty, sweet, bitter and sour but when you combine this with your sense of smell you can recognize many other individual tastes. Take away your smell and you limit your brain’s ability to tell the difference between certain foods.

Before you read together…Choose books together.Find a special place to read together, away from TV and other noise.Talk about the picture on the cover. ask your child, “What do you think the book will be about?”

While you read together…Be dramatic. add sound effects, use different voices.encourage your child to join in when phrases are repeated or predicable.ask “What do you think is going to happen next?”

After you read together…Talk about the story. “What was your favorite part?” `reread a favorite page or revisit a favorite picture.

Choosing quality toysa rule of thumb: less is more! The

less a toy does, the more opportunity a child has to create and learn from it. simple toys are easier for children to use, require less supervision and last longer.

Children learn important social skills, like cooperation, negotiation and compromise, playing with other children. Choose toys that children can use with others.

Forget the rules. encourage your child to explore and make believe. Playing creatively with toys greatly affects a child’s imagination and development.

Let children know you are listening. Stop what you are doing, look them in the eye and ask questions.

Where’s the baby?

Hold your baby so she is facing a mirror. sing and dance and just act silly. Point out her toes, nose, tummy, etc. Turn around and say, “Where did Mommy and layla go?” Turn around and say, “There they are!” let her touch the mirror and play with the “other” baby.

Before, during, after.....

Show your preschooler a picture in the paper or magazine of an everyday event. Ask what is going on in the picture, what might have happened before the picture was taken and what might happen next.Start an emergency fund. A good long term goal is enough to cover

expenses for 3-6 months. If you can only save a little each month that is ok. It will build up over time.

Quality CountsDo You Know Your Child Care Center’s Star

Rating? The early learning Coalition of Polk County is

committed to making the improvement of quality in early childhood education a priority. one of the most successful ways to improve quality is through a star rating system. research indicates that children benefit from systems that provide safe and healthy environments, reduced staff to child ratios and group size, appropriate use of curriculum, trained personnel, recognized business and management practices, family involvement, and staff retention. Polk’s Quality Counts program includes all of these criteria.

What are the goals of Quality Counts?• To improve the quality of early childhood education

in Polk County;• To provide parents with information so they may

identify and select higher quality programs;

• To assist providers in achieving higher standards in their programs

How can a child benefit from being enrolled in a program that is participating in Quality Counts?

Child care programs participating in Quality Counts are committed to providing services above and beyond what is minimally required of them by state licensing. The director and staff of programs participating in these sites are on an ongoing, self-initiated, path of education and skill development which will ultimately benefit a child’s long-term educational outcomes. These sites strive to provide children with high quality early learning opportunities and experiences which will develop the skills that they need to be ready for school. To learn more, visit the early learning Coalition of Polk County’s website at www.elcpolk.org.
