Government Grants Government agencies periodically release additional funding and grants to employers and learners to incentivise and support new apprenticeship places and additional up take to the Apprenticeship. These are released by different agencies and will offer different financial amounts. The government does this as it sees the Apprenticeship programme as a valuable route to support skills and growth for the economy. Where employers are eligible, MJTS will inform and promote these grants to employers to whom the grants will be applicable at the time of release. Should you need further information on grants available please feel free to contact the Training School.

The government is introducing student loans for learners aged 24 and above in further education and training studying at Level 3 and above, including Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships. They will be called 24+ Advanced Learning Loans and will apply to those starting their course or apprenticeship on or after 1 August 2013. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans will replace government grants for this group. Younger learners and those seeking to gain basic qualifications at Level 2 and below will continue to be funded by the grants they don’t have to pay back as is currently the case with the Apprenticeship.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans will cover the cost of tuition, so learners do not

have to pay upfront. They will be available from the Student Loans Company, like

other student loans. Repayments are a fixed proportion of income, start once the

borrower earns over £21,000, and are set at 9% of income over that threshold. If a

learner takes out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and subsequently takes out a

loan for higher education, their loans are rolled into one and only one monthly

repayment is made. Those who progress to higher education after taking out a loan

for an Access to HE diploma course will have their 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

balance written off, on completion of their higher education course. Learners will be able to apply for 24+ Advanced Learning Loans from April 2013. Employers will not be able to apply for the loan on the learners behalf. The maximum loan amount a learner may draw down will take into account the assumed contribution of 50% made by the employer Please contact the Training School for further information on the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans.

“Having worked alongside

Michaeljohn for almost 20 years

I have found them to be excellent

in all aspects of training my

staff and by comparison to other

training schools I found them to

be effective in all

communications.”Quote from

David Thomas (Salon Owner –

David Thomas Hair)

Michaeljohn recognises the need for diverse progression opportunities throughout life’s journey. Teaching is a very rewarding experience and provides a stable, long lasting career. We offer Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance (TAQA) qualifications which enables participants to assess the practical work of other students. Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) is our introductory qualification to teaching where learners can then progress to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) qualifying students to deliver both background knowledge sessions and assessment of practical skills. TAQA awards are Assessor awards and can be completed as 3 separate units. The first unit, 301, is the knowledge unit and is a compulsory unit. The second unit, 302, is an award which allows assessment in a work environment enabling enhanced progression for your apprentices. The third unit, 303, completes the assessment cycle, allowing assessment of the knowledge part of your apprentice’s qualification. The PTLLS qualification is aimed at first time teachers. The content teaches lesson planning skills and methods of delivery for learners. This award can be taken as level 3 or 4 and is taken over 42 class contact hours. The CTLLS teaching certificate follows from PTLLS, but requires teaching hours. Michaeljohn will be offering this level 4 award from 2013.

Personal Learning and

Thinking Skills (PLTS) PLTS are part of our courses and help learners to become successful, confident, employable, individuals and responsible citizens. Learners develop skills as:

Self Managers - able to organise work and get work done on time. Important when working in the salon and running a busy column.

Independent Enquiries - being able to work alone or investigate a problem. In the salon from time to time this skill will help dealing with client complaints.

Team Working - working with others to solve problems and deal with issues. In salons this could involve staff meetings or training seminars.

Becoming Effective Participators - being responsible for part of a task. In a salon this could be gowning a client, shampooing, conditioning etc.

Creative Thinking - thinking of original and interesting ideas. In a salon this could be a client consultation and discussing with the client the cut or the colour etc…

Reflective Learning - looking back on what has been learnt and applying that knowledge for something else.

In addition to helping our learners develop the skills and techniques they’ll need to become outstanding hairdressers we also help to develop ‘life skills’. Currently called ‘Key Skills’ but soon to be called ‘Functional Skills’, these awards in Application of Number (Maths) and Communication (English) each carry 5 credits towards the achievement of a NVQ qualification. We teach these skills in a hairdressing context, i.e. when taking payments for services, client consultations or mixing colours. Key/ Functional skills qualifications can be taken up to level 4 at Michaeljohn.

MJTS is a ‘centre of excellence’ for Health & Safety and was the first provider in the North West to achieve an ‘outstanding’ grade for this area from the Learning and Skills Council. We are committed to promoting and ensuring the safety/ wellbeing of all our staff and learners. Regular learning sessions, reinforced by external guest speakers underpin this important area. Regular questioning, quizzes and competitions ensure learners understand and retain essential messages and safe working practices.

“In my role as Community Personal

Adviser to Michaeljohn Training I

have experienced nothing but support

and excellent communication

regarding the support to clients. I

have found all staff very flexible to

their approach with young people

and in my experience all of the staff

hold safeguarding and the wellbeing

of their trainees at the centre of their

philosophy helping young people

from all economic and social

backgrounds reach their full

potential” Quote from James

Walklate (Community Advisor)

As a responsible Training Provider, Michaeljohn Training School has always been passionate about ensuring equality of opportunity for all and tackling discrimination, in all forms, before it occurs. As part of this commitment we have engaged into a wealth of initiatives across the country with various organisations including the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, Lifelong Learning UK and other training providers to constantly review and develop practices. Working closely with our partners at LLUK we have assisted with the development of a national standard for equality called the Equality Framework for Lifelong Learning UK and we were the first organisation nationally to achieve this challenging standard. Positive messages of celebrating and embracing diversity are displayed and are regularly reinforced in learning sessions via videos, talks, activities and interactive role plays. Equality is embedded throughout everything we do and learners’ understanding of this area is checked every 10 weeks as a minimum.

Equality

Health & Safety

Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all our learners is intrinsic to everything we do. All our staff and volunteers are trained to Level 1 in safeguarding as a minimum with the vast majority trained to Level 2 or above. We have three designated Safeguarding/ Child Protection Officers who take overall responsibility for the identification of and dealing with safeguarding issues/concerns. Learner and employers’ understanding of safeguarding is underpinned at regular intervals as part of a continuing drive to raise and maintain awareness/vigilance in this area. Our policies and procedures have been reviewed repeatedly by the Manchester Safeguarding Children’s Board and the Oldham Safeguarding Children’s Board who have described them as robust, at an advanced level and as having no gaps identified. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss our procedures for safeguarding learners please contact Lesley, Simon or Gabby on 0161 819 2662 or email [email protected]

“I think it's great that MJTS recognises its

responsibility to educate & support its

young people in all areas, not just

work/training.”Maddy Monaghan,

Teenage Pregnancy Reintegration Officer

Safeguarding

Information, Advice and Guidance Throughout life, we all need a bit of help or guidance from time to time. Just to check that we’re on the right path or maybe with something more serious. To ensure our learners are well equipped to overcome some of the hurdles that they may encounter in life, we have embedded life skills throughout all our courses from managing your finances, to cooking a nutritious meal and being safe in the city. In addition, we have trained support staff who can provide mentoring support whatever the problem, no matter how big or small. We work with a comprehensive group of external support agencies with individual specialisms as external guests providing informative discussions and demonstrations as well as targeted/individualised support where required. We actively promote career progression through higher level qualifications, enrichments and we can provide advice on creating a career pathway tailored to our learner’s dreams. If you or your son/daughter would like to know more please contact us.

Learning Support From time to time we all need a little help to achieve our goals. As MJTS has no entry qualification requirements for Intermediate Apprentices we understand that excellent learning support must be available. Over the years lots of our learners (many of them now salon owners and managers) have needed support in literacy, numeracy or assistance with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. Our well qualified learning support team are highlyskilled, approachable and are on hand to provide encouragement and coaching to brush up on skills to achieve qualifications. At MJTS support is there to remove fear and barriers to learning because at MJTS, every learner matters. MJTS’s learning support has been used by the learning support improvement service to inform other Training Schools and Colleges of the good work we do.

Your Views Feedback is very important to us at Michaeljohn, it’s how

we improve year on year. As a parent/guardian, you are a

valuable partner in your son or daughter’s training

programme and we value your thoughts on what you feel

we do well and what you would like us to develop. You can

submit your thoughts via paper based feedback surveys, at

parent’s evenings, via our website, to our dedicated email –

[email protected] or to any member of staff.

Attendance MJTS offers flexible training routes on all courses, meaning attendance patterns are agreed with the learner and employer. Training may even be delivered in salon (peripatetically). Most learners attend the Manchester Training School weekly or fortnightly. Learners are expected to inform the Training School and their employer as soon as possible if they are going to be absent for a session for any reason, including sickness and planned holidays. Routine medical and dental appointments should be made for times when lessons would not be missed wherever possible. If there is an ongoing problem that may affect attendance heavily or regularly, please speak to the Recruitment and Retention team who can help with any support arrangements as required.
