What a wonderful trip! Not only will the group be visiting Rome and all that the city has to offer, they will also have an audience with Pope Francis on March 30 th , attend the Papal Mass for Divine Mercy celebrated by Pope Francis on April 3rd and have an opportunity to sing with the Sistine Chapel Choir at that Mass. After Mass, they’ll attend the noon Papal Blessing in St. Peter’s Square then the Knight Band and Guard will present informal singing in St. Peter’s Square. I’ve only given you the highlights here! I’m very grateful to Mr. Hankey and Mrs. Reano for all of their work to organize and prepare for this wonderful trip and for Mrs. Galdamez who also will accompany the students as one of the chaperones. This trip is such a gift to all the participants! During this month of April, we will also begin to look to the end of the school year. It hardly seems possible that we will celebrate the seniors with the Senior Luau and the Senior Prom as we move ever closer to graduation day for the Class of 2016. We also look forward to Arts Fest Week when our very talented students’ artwork, musical, dramatic and literary talent will be on display, and to the Undergraduate Awards Ceremony during which we will honor our students’ significant academic achievements. April will certainly be a joyful month! Our celebration of Easter Sunday on March 27 th reminded us of the promise of new life through Jesus’ Resurrection and now our challenge is to strive to live that new life in Christ. I am reminded every day by our students of the many graces that we are offered in the present moment and also of accepting the grace to be open to the many surprises ahead. Our students are full of life, full of promise, full of love—each of them a sign of hope of the Resurrection that we all can become new in Christ by our daily commitment to our mission to love ourselves and to love and serve others as God loves us. I give thanks daily for them, for what they mean in my life and for what they mean to Bishop Montgomery. This simple prayer is one I pray often for all the many blessings I receive every day from your children, our students. Let us be grateful when we are able to give, for many do not have that privilege. Let us be grateful for all those who share their gifts, for we are enriched by their giving. And let us be grateful even for our needs, So that we may learn from the generosity of others. You, too, are in my prayers of thanksgiving. Rosemary Libbon Principal

WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN

March is the month when most colleges and universities notify applicants whether or not they have been accepted for the fall 2016 semester. We ask that you keep our seniors in your prayers as they await their decisions. They are certainly a competitive group and we are confident that many will be admitted to their first-choice schools. Please be aware that most colleges and universities require students to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) form by May 1 for the school they will attend. Waiting until May 1 is often a prudent decision, as you will likely have an opportunity to attend an admitted students reception and more fully analyze offers of financial aid.

Advanced Placement exams were recently ordered. The exams will take place Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 13. All morning tests will begin at 8:00am and all afternoon tests at 12:00pm. For the specific dates for each exam, please refer to the May calendar.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Casey DunnGuidance/Studies Coordinator

From the Discipline Office...

Uniforms. Please review pages 32-35 of the Parent-Student Handbook with your child to insure that there is a clear understanding of the uniform policy. Students may leave the house looking one way, but appear differently when they come on campus. There is no change in any policy. Students are constantly reminded:· to properly hem the bottoms of the pants so that they are not bunched up on top of the shoes. If a parent is

worried that the pants will be too short as their son/daughter grows, a temporary stitched hem can still be put in and let down as the child grows.

· that pants need to be worn at the natural waist, not drooping at the hips or lower. Some of the young men have pants drooping so low that their underwear is exposed. Many students are wearing pants that are 4” - 6” bigger in the waist than they should be. The waist needs to be taken in if the pants are large.

· that both the polo shirts and oxford shirts should be tucked in all the way. Many students leave their shirts untucked and fold them under so that they only “appear” tucked in.

· that the ONLY jackets allowed are BMHS jackets only. The ONLY acceptable sweatshirts are the official BMHS sweatshirts.

· that boys’ shorts should be clearly above the knee. If not, they should be shortened to an appropriate length. Girls’ shorts should be lower than mid-thigh.

· page 17 of the handbook clearly states that the flagrant disregard for the dress code is grounds for a referral or more severe repercussions. The uniform policy will be strictly enforced by faculty and administrators.

· that a student will be detained in the Attendance Office if the dress code infraction cannot be corrected. The Attendance Office will make an attempt to contact the parent so that the uniform item that is missing will be brought to the student before the student is allowed to return to class Parent-Student Handbook, page 13)

HAIRSTYLES. As we approach spring break, please remember that exaggerated hairstyles and colors are not permitted. Furthermore, boys must have their hair cut above the eyebrows, (mid)ears, and collar. This includes sideburns. Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to attend classes.

Earrings are not allowed for men and only 2 pair of earrings is allowed for ladies. No earrings are to be worn on the upper/middle earlobe. (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 32)

DETENTIONS. With a small number of days left in the school year, there are even less detention days. Detentions take precedence over athletic practices. Arrangements can be made for missing detention due to illnesses, medical appointments, athletic games/meets, and tutoring. Remember that disregard for an assigned detention is cause for a referral and may result in probation (Parent-Student Handbook, page 15). Remember, life is much easier when there is no detention to serve in the first place!

Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 22, “The school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities pre- or post- Bishop Montgomery dances. The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.”

Prom Dance: Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their school. YOU are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

Prom Dress Attire. The dance is formal.

Dress Code for Prom

Please adhere to the following dress code for Prom, and do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you, or an invited guest, purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to the guidelines WILL NOT be permitted to enter the dance, and will be sent home. If you are asked to leave Prom, the bid money will not be refunded, and may result in disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

Gentlemen-Required to wear tuxes or suits.Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. Dress shoes are required.MAY NOT WEAR earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, nor may they carry canes.

Ladies-May wear two pairs of earrings in the lower lobe, but may not wear sunglasses. The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts, as stated on page 32 of the BMHS Student Handbook. The dress material must be solid material throughout. Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below mid-back. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.

Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Students attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste.

Spring brings the 2016-2017 ASB and class officer elections, Spirit Squad tryouts, Spring Spirit Week, Arts Fest and senior activities. It’s a busy time on campus, so please remind your students of these dates and don’t let them pass up these opportunities to get involved!

ASB and Class Officer ElectionsElections for ASB Officers have been held, and elections for class officers will take place on March 22nd. Newly elected officers will join in regular ASB and class officer meetings after spring break, and are required to attend the summer leadership training and planning meetings in May and June.

Student Leadership Day for Middle School StudentsBishop Montgomery partnered, once again, with The Association of Catholic Student Councils to host a Student Leadership Day on Friday, March 11th. Over 150 middle school students visited our campus, and participated in workshops facilitated by Bishop Montgomery students. These presentations encourage middle school students to step forward and lead, practice teamwork, and apply their leadership skills. Students learned about programs that serve underprivileged communities, and how to put our Catholic Faith into action.

Spirit Squad for 2016-2017Applications for our Short Flag Team will be distributed during lunch on March 22nd, and Song Team applications will be distributed on Tuesday, March 22nd after school in the Student Activity Center. All potential applicants must attend the appropriate meeting, and have all their paperwork on file by the due date, in order to participate in workshops and tryouts in April.

Spring Spirit WeekBishop celebrated Spring Spirit Week the week of March 14th-18th. This week was full of fun activities and opportunities to show class and school spirit while spring varsity athletes are recognized. Activities included the “Battle of the Bands” during lunchtime, along with our traditional Class Color Day and Black and Gold Day. Students enjoyed an extended lunch period on Thursday for “Lunchapalooza,” which featured performances by student bands, and the week’s activities ended with a Sadie Hawkins Dance, on Friday.

Bishop AmbassadorsBishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, Feeder School Visits and Shadow Days. Applications will be distributed this spring for 2016-2017. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines.

These are great ways to be involved with student life at BMHS!

SENIORS:Specific information regarding senior events, including Senior Luau, Prom, Senior Disney Day, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation, was sent home in a detailed letter the beginning of March. If you did not receive your letter, please contact the Activities Office to make sure to get a copy. Pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that you do not miss out on these important senior activities.

I look forward to seeing you and your students involved in these upcoming events. Thanks for your support!

Bishop Montgomery is excited to announce that former Loyola Marymount University head softball coach Gary Ferrin has been named the next head softball coach for the Lady Knights. Ferrin, no stranger to BMHS, is married to a Bishop alumna Christine Gregorius-Ferrin ‘83 and saw his daughter, Courtney Ferrin ‘15, graduate from Bishop last spring. When the head coaching position opened up at Bishop Montgomery, Assistant Principal Steve Miller noted that Ferrin was the obvious choice. According to Miller, the coaching legend was “at the top of the list.” Ferrin retired in 2015 after his 21st season as head coach of the LMU softball program. The most successful coach in the program’s history, Ferrin holds a 667-510-1 career record as a head coach, earning conference coach of the year honors three times. He coached seven Players of the Year in 10 years in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference and won three PCSC titles-- the most of any program in the conference’s history. In 2014, he led LMU into a new era as softball became a West Coast Conference sponsored sport. His position as BMHS head coach will be Ferrin’s first in the high school arena, but the Knights are confident he will be an asset to the softball program, and his coaching expertise and skill will immediately be felt at the school and among the players. The Lady Knights, under Coach Ferrin, began their season with a home opener against South Torrance on March 8.

Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Tennis, Golf and Track are all beginning League play. Come out and support your Knights in this busy spring season.

Summer Sport camps are around the corner. Be sure to sign up at re-registration for your sports summer conditioning class. All classes do not conflict with Summer School and are highly encouraged for those that want to play.

BMHS has applied for funds from the new Archdiocesan C3: Ignite program. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles Depart-ment of Catholic Schools, in partnership with Sprint, is launching C3: Ignite, a $6 million education technology accel-erator program for the 270 Catholic elementary and high schools in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. Our campus is requesting funding to supplement the digital resources available to students in the school library.

This program will provide selected schools with Sprint connected tablets, educational content resources, and training and support for principals and teachers. “C3: Ignite will enable our schools to utilize the power of technology with their compelling focus on faith formation, academic excellence and improved opportunities for the students and their fami-lies,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez.
