Welcome

Since the beginning of 2011, our Deputy Head of School K-6 and Head of Junior School has been Mrs Rhonda Robson, formerly Head of Junior School and Deputy Principal at Broughton Anglican College in Menangle. Prior to Broughton, Mrs Robson was School Counsellor and Gifted and Talented Coordinator at St Paul’s Grammar School.

She has a tremendous capacity to accept a huge and varied workload and fulfil the tasks very well. Particularly helpful are her intimate knowledge of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which is widely regarded as international best practice in primary education, the principles which she has weaved into the educational framework of St Andrew’s. Her people skills and insight based on her training and experience as a psychologist, and her extensive track record in gifted education have set her up to be a transformative leader.

Mrs Robson is also formally trained in gifted education through Professor Miraca Gross’ GERRIC Unit at the University of NSW.

In addition to all these attributes, Mrs Robson has taught successfully from Kindergarten to Year 12 in a range of subjects, most notably in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Psychology where her academic results were the best at St Paul’s Grammar School. She understands the K-12 continuum and issues of transition to high school. She also produced and directed several highly successful school musicals. She has an advanced understanding of integrating the Christian faith through the whole school and worked extensively with the Anglican Education Commission to that very effect at Broughton Anglican College and here at St Andrew’s.

In addition to all her school successes, Mrs Robson lectured and tutored for a number of years part-time in psychology at the University of Western Sydney.

Since Mrs Robson’s arrival nine years ago, the Junior School has more than doubled in size and is flourishing. She has transformed the teaching and learning practices, successfully improving the levels of Literacy and Numeracy in particular. The impact of this strategy is visible in quality teaching methodologies, and impressive NAPLAN results. The Junior School is a happy, vibrant and thriving part of the whole school of St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

My visits to the Junior School show calm and ordered learning, with a good deal of engagement and indeed joy in being there displayed by our students. All are very well cared for by our class teachers, our specialised education staff who deal with giftedness, disabilities and English as a second language, and by our pastoral programs. Student wellbeing is in the hands of our Wellbeing Coordinator and our two Junior School psychologists supported by class teachers. There is a vibrant co-curricular, sporting and outdoor education program, which endeavours to deal holistically with our young people as we assist them to flourish. Our goal is that they flourish in terms of Jesus’ purpose: “I have come that you may have life, and life to the full” – John 10:10.

Dr John Collier

Head of St Andrew’s Cathedral School

I am in Teacher ‘Heaven’, my staff are

of the highest quality and provide a

safe and secure educational

environment in which children can

flourish. Any new students will quickly

feel they belong.

What a joyous place our Junior School

is. St Andrew’s Cathedral School has

long been known as the School of

heart in the heart of the city. It is well

known for its happy, calm and friendly

environment enriched by a very strong

focus on positive psychology,

genuinely caring for both the staff and

students’ wellbeing. Our wonderful

school continues to thrive and prosper.

We strive to develop the whole child,

their heart, mind and life. We have

focused on developing their character

through our wellbeing programs which

nurture specific character strengths

based upon our foundational Christian

values. We nurture minds with quality

teaching practices driven by our quality

teaching staff. We are innovative in

how we utilise student data and set

goals to improve learning for our

students. We work as a team to

determine the best strategies and

programs for learning for our students.

We have enjoyed the greatest

academic growth compared to similar

schools, as measured by NAPLAN and

UNSW ICAS results.

Head of Junior School welcomeWe are keen to develop the Heart, Mind and Life

In 2020 we look forward to many new and innovative opportunities. We will continue to offer broad curriculum options as well as purposeful subject specialisation. We are excited about the introduction of specialist Literacy, Numeracy and Technology Integrators to support our teachers with evidence-based teaching and learning practices. We have a wide range of sporting, camping, musical and drama opportunities which will undoubtedly bring important life development skills to all students involved. It is also the year of the Junior School Musical, which promises to be a wonderful community event.

I pray that the holiday break is restful for all and look forward to seeing each of you at the commencement of the 2020 school year. May God keep you and your families safe over Christmas and ready for a wonderful year of learning, laughing and living in 2020.

Mrs Rhonda Robson

Deputy Head of School (Primary)

Welcome to 2020. I am extremely proud and honoured to oversee this wonderful Junior School under the leadership of Dr John Collier. I truly love my job.

I particularly cherish the opportunity to assist in the development of our most precious resource – children.

St Andrew’s Cathedral Gawura School is a separate school for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Gawura is a wonderful social justice initiative of St Andrew’s Cathedral School. It is largely funded by the Federal Government and is now in it’s 14th year of operation. In 2020 we have 33 students enrolled in Gawura K-6.

Each student undertakes not only academic studies in Gawura but will be learning cultural language from the Wiradjuri nation. The students will also be attending cultural excursions where we will have the benefit of CAP indigenous elders lead our students through their land and share traditional stories and wisdom from past and present times.

Last year Gawura students from K-12 along with five parents attended a day of cultural learning on Sydney Harbour with the Indigenous crew from Tribal Warrior. The students learnt about life around the harbour prior to European settlement and Elders shared traditional stories as we disembarked on Clark Island. We also toured International Towers at Barangaroo where Aunty Glenda shared stories of this amazing Aboriginal woman.

Wiradjuri language is taught in both the Gawura School and the Junior School, a united language and cultural program designed to better understand our First Nation people.

We are extremely proud of our Gawura School, and we value our productive partnership that exists between our students, staff and parents in both the Gawura School and the Junior School of St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

Getting in TouchWho and when to make contact

Rationale

All communication between members of the St Andrew’s Cathedral School community, including staff, parents, carers and students, should reflect the school’s values of grace, integrity and justice. The school encourages parents to be actively involved in their children’s education and in the school generally, believing that involvement enhances student learning. For this reason, the school places great emphasis on the establishment and maintenance of effective channels of communication with parents. Our procedures will be characterised by fairness, mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation in resolving issues and concerns. What can parents expect of the school?

We are committed to preserving a safe learning environment where individual rights are respected and our school community works together for a common purpose. We are committed to dealing sensitively with parents and carers and will respond as quickly as is practical to all matters.

We will maintain confidentiality where appropriate, releasing information on a “need to know” basis to staff. If parents have a specific request regarding the extent of access to information given, that request should be made known at the time of contact.

Members of staff will endeavour to return phone calls and/or emails within two working days. Please be aware that it is school policy that teachers will not leave classes to receive or return calls or conduct interviews.

The school is committed to attempting to resolve issues of concern speedily for parents. Often the incompleteness of information, or the multiple demands on people’s time prevents an immediate resolution. Parents are asked for their patience in following through matters.

What does the school expect of parents?

Communication – parents should:

• Direct their concerns to the appropriate staff member as outlined in the hierarchy (see graphic right);

• Make an appointment in advance when seeking personal communication with staff;

• Approach matters in a calm and rational manner, ensuring interactions result in a clear path to resolution;

• Provide contact details so we can call or email you within two working days;

• Communicate any extremely important matter in writing to ensure all the details of the matter can be fully understood;

• Only contact staff members during office hours (Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm). Please refrain from contacting staff on their mobile phone outside these hours.

Hierarchy of contactThe following guide for parents and carers indicates the best manner in which to direct specific issues related to the welfare of your child:

Academic issues

K-6

Class Teacher

Grade Leader

Curriculum Coordinator

Deputy Head of Junior School

(Teaching & Learning)

Deputy Head of School (Primary)

Head of School

Pastoral/wellbeing issues

K-6

Class Teacher

Grade Leader

Deputy Head of Junior School (Pastoral)

Deputy Head of School (Primary)

Head of School

While it may seem quicker to go to the higher authority in a sequence it is usually more appropriate to start with the person who knows the student or the details of the incident best. Only if the matter cannot be resolved at the initial level should it progress through the hierarchy of responses.

Getting in TouchWho and when to make contact

Before 9am and after 5pm

Parents should wear a Parent Lanyard when visiting St Andrew’s House and accompanying their child onto the campus. These are given to registered parents and carers at the start of the school year. (See page 5 for the parents lanyards section).

Between 9am and 5pm

Parents should make an appointment in advance with the relevant staff member or department, sign in/out at Reception and wear a Visitor Lanyard while on the school premises. A staff representative should meet the parent at Reception. The only exception is when the parent is heading directly to the Uniform Shop, After School Care or the Health Centre on Level 6 of SAH.

School events

For school events which involve multiple visitors (such as parent teacher meetings or social functions), parents do not need to report to Reception or wear a lanyard. Clear signage will be displayed at the entrances to the school and staff and/or student representatives will be on hand to assist in directing visitors to and from the event venue.

Visiting procedures

Common courtesy

The school values its relationships with parents but cannot accommodate aggressive or rude behaviour by either parents or visitors. Where behaviour becomes aggressive or rude, the person in question may be asked to leave the school grounds and/or may be referred to the Head of School.

Media release consent

Parents can request that their child’s image does not appear in any marketing or media materials by contacting the Registrar Mr Bruce Perry. Please email [email protected]

Student wellbeingNurturing the individual in community under Christ

The growth and nurturing of each student’s sense of wellbeing has always been a vital element of who we are at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, and this year sees a number of exciting changes in the way in which we intentionally develop and focus on this core area within the Junior School.

A key initiative is a designated wellbeing time as a part of the weekly timetable for every class across the Junior School. This allows for the meaningful integration of wellbeing discussion and activities into all our classrooms in a focused and intentional way. Classroom teachers will generally be teaching this wellbeing lesson so that the content and discussion which occur during these lessons can then be referenced and reinforced during other classroom activities. Throughout these lessons we will continue to use the range of wellbeing programs which are already well known to Junior School students, such as Bounce Back, as well as introducing new programs such as the Zones of Regulation, Peacewise kids and URstrong.

In addition, our SACS character strengths will come to life with visual icons which you will see displayed across our classrooms and open spaces, and perhaps you may even notice “strength spotter” stickers stuck on our students and staff as we spot them living out our character strengths through everyday school life.

Individual care and student support continues to be primarily embraced by the classroom teachers who seek to have strong and nurturing relationships with their students.

However, if additional support is required we do have a wonderful network of pastoral care and counselling support available through our grade leaders, specialised and executive staff, as well as our school psychologists.

We look forward to journeying with you and your child in 2020 and our hope is throughout all that we do we recognise the importance of nurturing the whole child; with hearts that love, minds that grow, and lives that give.

General informationSchool times, attendance, office hours, absences and canteen

School timesJunior School commences at 8.35am and concludes at 3.10pm. Students are escorted to the School Foyer and then Kent Street for dismissal or pick up at the end of the day. There is a 30-minute free parking option in the SAH car park. It is advised that you do not enter the car park until approximately 3.10pm and then meet your son or daughter in the School Foyer or at the Kent Street pick-up point shortly after.

Student attendanceAll students are expected to be at school by 8.35am ready to commence the school day. It is a legal requirement that student attendance is registered daily and any absence is appropriately explained in writing by a parent or guardian. It is of utmost importance that all students are at school on time as important Literacy sessions occur at the commencement of every school day. Please note that any partial absences will be recorded and the school is liable to ensure an appropriate explanation is sought. It is not sufficient to state simply that a student is ‘ill’ or ‘sick’ when absent; the written explanation must outline in what way. Both partial and full absences will be recorded on the school semester reports.

DEAR TimeFrom 8am to 8.10am every morning is Drop Everything And Read Time. All students who arrive at 8am must read silently for 10 minutes.

Student late arrivals and early departuresJunior School students who arrive after 8.35am or leave before 3.10pm are required to have an adult report with them to the Main Reception in the

School Foyer and to complete the appropriate form. These students are considered Partial Absences and will be recorded as such. No Junior School student is permitted to leave the school before 3.10pm without an adult to collect them and sign them out.

Junior School student absentee telephone line Should your child be absent from school, it is imperative that you phone 9286 9500 stating their year, name and reason for the absence. This must be followed up in writing, whether in a note or an email.

quickcliq.com.au

How QuickCliq works: 1. Sign up to QuickCliq

• Select ‘sign up’ button • Enter your contact details, nominate a user name and password and submit • You will receive a confirmation email • Log into the website • Select our school • Enter student’s name(s) • Add credit to your account • Order meals from canteen menu

2. Student / parent places order online https://quickcliq.com.au

This can become a family activity making family time more important by teaching children a valuable life skill.

3. Order received in canteen:

When the order is received, the canteen is able to view / print a list of all orders required for that day.

4. Order is printed on a paper bag or as a meal voucher:

Meal orders can be printed directly on the paper bags. Some additional details like teacher’s name / room / tutor / food allergies etc. can be printed on the bags. An alternate process is for the canteen or parents to print meal vouchers for any orders placed online.

General information and communicationCo-curricular, communication, reporting and emergencies

Co-curricular activitiesYou will receive a booklet via email outlining co-curricular activities early in Term 1, which will include the date that bookings open. Please note that there are no co-curricular activities in the first two weeks of school.

CommunicationIn order to minimise confusion for day-to-day operations in the first instance, other than an emergency requiring an immediate response, please contact the class teacher either through email, phone or in person at the end of the school day. Similarly, the return of correspondence should be to the class teacher, unless otherwise directed.

The Junior School will update parents and guardians through a fortnightly newsletter and/or emails and notes. The student handbook facilitates additional parent-teacher communication. From time to time, parents may wish to make enquiries about their child’s progress or various aspects of the school’s program. The school values such contact with parents/guardians and they are encouraged to discuss any matter that may be affecting their child’s schooling. As a general rule, parents should contact the appropriate Junior School teacher, in the first instance, as they will initially deal with all matters relating to general progress, attendance and conduct or other matters.

CorrespondenceA letter from parents or guardians is to be tendered without delay to cover:

(a) Absence or lateness

(b) Exemption for inability to participate in activity (sport, PDHPE etc)

(c) Sickness (d) Non-completion of homework

(e) Leave from school

(f) Leave from compulsory event (prior to the event)

Please send to: [email protected]

Child progress reportingThe task of educating young people is shared between the home, the school and the individual student. For this reason, the provision of clear communication channels is vital.

There are a number of ways in which parents are able to be kept informed about their child’s progress. These include the end of semester reports and parent-teacher interviews. We also encourage parents and teachers to make direct contact with one another through phone calls, emails and meetings as needed.

Parent information is available on the new Junior School Portal.

We encourage you to make good use of the SACS website and to read the fortnightly newsletters to inform yourself about aspects of your child’s educational experience.

Emergency contact with parentsExperience in other countries has shown that mobile networks may fail because of overload in a crisis situation. The school website will be updated with messages to the school community on behalf of the Head of School should an emergency arise. All

families should take note of the website URL, www.sacs.nsw.edu.au where all key information is kept up-to-date.

Emergency drill procedures

St Andrew’s Cathedral School has designed emergency procedures to minimise the chance of a life-threatening emergency and to mitigate damage in the event one does occur. These measures are considered appropriate for both school buildings.

All alarms received from smoke detectors, sprinkler systems and manual break glass stations cause an immediate localised response and send a signal, when warranted, to the fire brigade. These devices also shut down airconditioning to prevent the spread of fire, shut down the gas supply to the buildings and pressurise the fire stairs (BBC & SAH). At the same time, the lifts automatically return to the ground to prevent personnel being caught in them.

All rooms in SAH have EWIS loudspeakers to alert occupants of the need to evacuate.

Evacuation procedures for parents / guestsAll people not normally in the school should exit the buildings according to the directions of the Fire Wardens and assemble in front of the glass doors on the outside in the Square.

General communicationGeneral rules, discipline, school functions and photographs

Rule enforcementOur Junior School is a safe and happy environment and we are blessed with a school climate that is overtly tolerant, respectful and caring. High expectations are held for student behaviour in and out of the classroom.

General rules

(i) Students are encouraged to take particular care in the security of any electronic device or musical instrument they bring to school. The school is not responsible for breakages due to inappropriate care and usage.

(ii) Mobile phones and other electronic devices will be confiscated by teachers if brought into a class, on to the playground or into Before and After School Care. The confiscated phone/electronic device will be handed back to the student by the Head of Junior School or Gawura School at a later time. Repeated offences will result in the student being asked not to bring the item to school. Mobile phones, with the capacity to take photos, should not be used in an inappropriate way.

(iii) Students are only permitted to play ball and chasing games such as handball, basketball, football, soccer and cricket on the Rooftop of SAH and in the Gymnasium.

(iv) Chewing gum of any form is banned from the school and will not be tolerated.

(vi) Skateboards and scooters are not permitted in the school at any time. Offenders will have their skateboard or scooter confiscated. Students are not to ride skateboards, bikes or scooters to and from school.

Discipline

1. Time out Reflection and Restoration

If a student makes repeated poor choices following verbal warnings or engages in physically or psychologically harmful behaviour, they may be required to attend a Reflection and Restoration session (a time-out) at lunchtime. Repeated offences may result in playground suspension. An in-school suspension would be the next level of behaviour consequence following unsuccessful improvement in behaviour.

2. Suspension and expulsion

The suspension of a student from school for a serious breach of discipline will be for a period to be determined by the Head of School. While suspended, a student may be required to stay at home or in a designated study area within the school building. No student will be re-admitted to classes until there has been a conference with the student, his or her parents and the school. Any student who is suspended more than once will be in jeopardy of being asked not to return to school. During a suspension, a student may not participate in any school activity.

School functionsStudents are expected to take an active role in all school functions. Attendance is compulsory at the end-of-year Evening of Celebration and Prize-giving (for Years 5 - 12), the annual Swimming Carnival, the annual Athletics Carnival, the annual Gala Day, the Junior School and Gawura Music / Musical events (Showcase, IPSHA Music Festival, Musical and Christmas Concert).

Students are to wear full school uniform (including blazer) to all school functions, unless otherwise directed, or directed to wear sport uniform.

School photographs

From time to time, the school’s staff will take photographs (either digital or printed versions) of students at various events and activities. These photographs are stored in various departments and archived at the end of each year.

During the year, these photographs are made accessible to staff to produce documents, teaching aids, brochures and other promotional and educational material, including the school’s Prospectus, Inspired magazines and advertisements. They may also be used on the website and in the school’s newsletters.

If you would NOT like your child to feature in any of the communication material produced by the school, please contact Registrar Bruce Perry on (02) 9286 9507 or email [email protected]

The raise responsibility discipline system

There are three principles we practice:

Positivity

People do good when they feel good, not when they feel bad. Staff communicate what they want – not what they do not want. They change negatives into positives. “No running” becomes “we walk in the hallways”; “stop talking” becomes “this is quiet time”.

Choice

Simply stated, people do not argue with their own decisions. Choice-response thinking is taught so students never need be victims.

Reflection

A person can control another person only temporarily. But no one can actually change another person. Asking reflective questions is the most effective approach to prompt change in others.

Raise Responsibility Hierarchy

The hierarchy engenders a desire to behave responsibly and a desire to put forth effort to learn.

Students differentiate between internal and external motivation – and learn to rise above inappropriate peer influence.

4 levels of responsibility

D. Democracy: develops self-discipline, shows kindness to others, does good because it is the right thing.

C. Cooperation: listens, practises, cooperates. The motivation is external.

B. Bullying/ Bothering: bosses others, bothers others, breaks classroom standards.

A. Anarchy: chaos, no rules.

The hierarchy engenders a desire to behave at the highest levels.

The levels separate the deed from the doer, reducing defensive behaviours.

It reinforces the choice factor they have over all of their actions.

It assists young people in dealing with the power of peer pressure.

It fosters internal motivation to behave better.

It fosters character education without mentioning values, ethics or morals.

A unique and inspiring educational contextAs educators, the Junior and Gawura School take advantage of our unique context, making the most of the interesting and diverse learning spaces that this context affords. We are able to compare old and new buildings, we have access to art galleries, museums and theatres and we are in close proximity to fields and state of the art sporting facilities such as Cook and Philip pool, Darling Harbour playgrounds, Queens Park, Wentworth Park and the grounds at the University of Sydney. Each of these venues serve to open our students’ eyes to our beautiful city, as well as to the possibilities for the future, at a young age.

High quality teaching and learning

Our approach at St Andrew’s is to balance explicit teaching of necessary and important skills such as phonics, spelling, handwriting, number knowledge, research and information skills, balanced with inquiry and rich tasks. Our students learn skills that then equip them to access problem solving and design tasks. This allows our students to apply their surface learning of skills, to a deeper learning involving understanding and application of their knowledge and skills. We teach our students to work collaboratively with each other and their teachers, to ensure they are equipped to work in a world that demands collaboration, creativity and respect for ideas and people.

Academic trackingIn the Junior School and Gawura School, the teachers collaborate to create a learning program which takes into consideration the learning needs of individual students. This means that extended learning experiences are designed and implemented for those students who are more independent achievers, whilst at the same time, learning experiences are differentiated for those students who need more support in some areas. The flexibility of our Junior School environment allows for such differentiated lessons to take place within each session of the school day.

The best way for educators to understand where students need support, is to regularly conduct standardised pre-assessments and formative assessments to track and

monitor students’ progress. This tracking constantly directs the teaching strategies required and teachers plan learning experiences based on the current needs of their students.

Education is an ever-changing field and at St Andrew’s we endeavour to engage in research-based best practice in education – ensuring the best possible outcomes for our students. We are also mindful that it is through cooperation between parents and the school that best results can be achieved.

Learning support and extensionA team of specialist educators support our teachers in the classroom, as well as through withdrawal groups, to cater for the learning needs of students who require additional support, as well as those needing further extension to meet the demands of the curriculum.

This includes students of high academic potential, or gifted and talented students. At SACS, students have their needs met through the process of differentiated instruction. Gifted and talented students are recognised as having unique educational needs and are catered for in order that their learning outcomes are optimised.

Developmentally appropriate programs for gifted and talented students incorporate a combination of grouping strategies, enrichment, counselling interventions and acceleration. Selection of students for Accelerated classes and/or cluster groups commonly follows a recommendation procedure. Student nomination may be gathered from parents, students and staff and considered alongside academic records from semester based school-wide screening. Standardised tests, maths, comprehension and vocabulary, group reading tests, oral reading fluency, phonemic awareness, mathematics diagnostic tests, basic skills assessments and UNSW competitions are components considered by the Gifted and Talented Committee for placement. Full psychometric assessments, provided by registered psychologists, provide valuable information in the development of a student profile, and parents are urged to provide the school with such information if it becomes available.

Each year a Parent Information Evening is held, outlining the school’s policy and procedures and directions in gifted education. The Gifted Education Committee acts corporately as arbiter of any decisions regarding student placement. The Committee considers which students would benefit most by placement in the extension class or cluster grouping at this time, in consultation with all stakeholders.

The Junior School Gifted And Talented Coordinator is Mrs Lucy Birts; she has a Masters qualification in Gifted Education (contact can be made by email to [email protected]). Mrs Birts is supervised by Mrs Emily Edwards, who also has a Masters qualification in Gifted Education. Other staff with specialised Gifted Education qualifications include Rhonda Robson, Kate Robertson, Dr Kaye Chalwell and Miss Emily Sze and Ms Harriet O’Donnell.

ReportingSt Andrew’s Cathedral School has three formal methods of reporting on student progress. They are:

• School Reports are issued at the conclusion of Semester 1 and Semester 2 and provide a comprehensive summary of student progress.

• Parent/Teacher interviews are held in Term 1 and Term 3 for each year level and provide an opportunity for parents to meet with individual teachers to discuss their child’s progress.

• As well as this, there are informal opportunities for parents to discuss their child’s progress through conversations with individual class teachers.

Junior School programChapel, Christian Development, the Mandarin program

Christian ministryChapel is a weekly event at the school and all students are expected to attend. Chapels provide a communal expression of the school’s Christian basis and commitment, and go hand-in-hand with the Christian Development course.

The Christian Development course aims to introduce students to the Christian faith as it is revealed in The Bible and provides them with the opportunity to engage in healthy discussion on both its theory and practice. Chapel sees students participating as they provide the music, lead the singing, read The Bible, offer prayer, and occasionally speak of their own experience of the Christian life.

In addition to weekly Chapel services, the chaplaincy team coordinates a wide range of voluntary Christian ministries. There are a number of lunchtime groups for Bible study, prayer, fun and encouragement. These groups are affiliated with The CRU organisation and are generally structured around year and gender. These groups are led by the chaplaincy team, Christian staff and Year 13 alumni.

In addition, Chaplaincy team members are available to meet with students at any time for prayer, support, pastoral counselling and encouragement.

The Mandarin programThe Mandarin program is a significant and integral part of education at St Andrew’s. It aims to enable students to develop communication skills, focus on languages as systems and gain insights into the relationship between language and culture, leading to lifelong personal, educational and vocational benefits. We are thus very much committed to teaching our students to understand and appreciate the Chinese culture. We are very keen to provide opportunities for our students to be involved in cultural activities, such as establishing sister schools relationships with schools in China and presenting our students to the National Chinese Eisteddfod held in Sydney annually.

The main components of the program are described as objectives with distinctive outcomes in each area for each stage.

The Mandarin program has been written in a unit form based on themes that foster task-based learning, engage student interest and/or correspond with units of work being studied in other syllabus areas.

Main topics include:

• Festivals and celebrations – Chinese New Year/Dragon Boat festival/Mid-Autumn festival/Christmas

• Greeting/introducing and instructions

• Poems/rhymes and songs

• Numbers and their application in everyday life – dates and time/shopping etc

• Knowing myself – my body parts/my family/my feelings etc.

• Countries and nationalities

• Animals and pets

• Foods and drinks

• Sports and leisure activities

• Seasons and weather

Junior School programMusic

Learning music is very much a part of general school activities at St Andrew’s. Students receive an hour of classroom music per week taught by Orff and Kodaly trained specialists who hold qualifications in music education.

In addition, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are encouraged to participate in our tuition programme. The majority of students in the Junior School undertake private tuition and the Music Department facilitates this through the running of the program, which sees approximately 40 visiting instrumental and vocal tutors coming to teach students K-12 on a weekly basis.

Students who are learning a string, wind or brass instrument (inside OR outside school) are also encouraged to join our ensemble program through participation in the Training Strings Ensemble, Junior String Orchestra and Junior Band. Extension groups for students who play at a higher standard are also run as needed. Students of an advanced ability are also welcome to request consideration to participate in 7-12 ensembles.

Singing lessons are available to students from Year 5 onwards, based on tutor availability. Students who undertake singing lessons should also participate in our Junior Choir.

A range of performance opportunities exist throughout the school year, from weekly Music Maestros concerts through to lunchtime concerts, stage concerts, soirees, Showcase and our Junior Ensembles Concert.

Junior School programOutdoor education, sport

Outdoor educationThe school owns and operates Kirrikee, an Outdoor Education Centre in the Southern Highlands south-west of Sydney. Students from K-6 attend an outdoor education program once each year. Each program has the primary aim of enabling every student to develop an understanding of their relationship with their Creator and to marvel at the wilderness areas they are in. It aims to challenge, change and encourage students emotionally, relationally and spiritually. The Outdoor Education program is an important component of the curriculum and all students are expected to attend.

Kindergarten has a day out at Centennial Park and Wild Play. Year 1 has a long day camp in a local national park and Year 2 has a day camp with a school sleepover.

The focus in the primary ages is to have fun and give these young students a taste of the Australian bush with time away from the normal comforts and security of home, together with some small outdoor recreation skill development.

Each camp is run by the school’s own outdoor education staff.

SportOur Kindergarten to Year 6 sport program focuses on the development of fundamental movement skills. It aims to build on the programs offered in previous years, utilising various facilities in the school and city for both summer and winter. This is highlighted by our K-2 program exploring gymnastics and swimming programs during the year, providing the students with a skillset that will serve them well in future physical activity.

We are part of ASISSA (an inter-school sporting association) for students in Years 4-6 to compete against other schools on a weekly basis in seasonal sports. Through our interschool sport program, students learn less tangible skills, such as resilience, team work and humility in a safe and supportive environment.

Within the interschool competition, St Andrew’s Junior School has a fine reputation for sporting success and attitude, which is reflected in each student’s skill development, enthusiasm, encouragement of others and conduct. All sports, competitive and non-competitive, are fully supervised throughout the afternoon.

There are three major school carnivals during the year. All students (Years 3-6) are expected to participate at the school’s swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals. There are opportunities for students to represent St Andrew’s at ASISSA carnivals and at NSW Combined Independent School level.

St Andrew’s believes that young people who are physically fit and enthusiastically challenged in a fun and safe sporting environment perform better academically.

SACS - Junior School Parent Information Booklet 2020 | 39

Parents, carers and friends are integral to the St Andrew’s Cathedral School Community. The Association of Parents and Friends has the dual role of building and supporting the parent community, as well as fundraising to support our school and students.

The P&F looks forward to your involvement in the many events we host during the year. Perhaps we will see you at one of our Welcome in the Square events.

The P&F supports year group social functions organised by Parent Convenors. These events provide opportunities for parents (and sometimes their children) to meet informally to develop friendships and share the highs and lows of parenting and school life. This is much like a ‘class parent’ and we ask for volunteers from each year group in Years 7-12, and each class in Years K-6, to foster and encourage social networks, welcome families to the school, support families in need, and liaise with the P&F and the school’s Director of Community Engagement. This is a vital role in a school that draws students from over 220 Sydney suburbs. Convenors also encourage parents and carers to help out with the P&F activities.

While we have fun at our P&F events, many have a dual purpose as fundraisers. In recent years, the P&F has raised funds for audio visual equipment, educational items, staff scholarships and the refurbishment of Chapter House. In addition, we have several sub-committees that focus on supporting specific areas of interest to parents, including rugby and football sub-committees, who work to foster friendships and fundraise within their sports.

All families are encouraged to pay a membership fee with their school fees in Term 1 to offset administrative costs and support our community events.

The P&F meets twice a term, providing regular updates on key school news and events. The Head of School update is a standing agenda item once a term and presents parents with the opportunity for direct engagement with Dr Collier and senior staff on matters of education, welfare or school infrastructure. The P&F also regularly arranges specific presentations on topics of community interest from staff or invited guests and it is a good opportunity to stay informed about changes in the educational environment. The P&F meetings are open and informal opportunities to engage with the school and benefit most from a wide range of thoughts and contributions, so participation is strongly encouraged.

The P&F has its own community newsletter that updates parents on items of interest, upcoming events and P&F meeting dates and minutes.

Mrs Helen Carson P&F President

The meetings help parents stay informed in the complicated modern world of education which has changed so much since their own schooling

SACS school foundationOverview, Gawura Scholarship Fund

Overview

The SACS Foundation’s aim is to anticipate and provide for the funding needs of the students of St Andrew’s Cathedral School and Gawura, now and in the future, over and above what is provided by school fees and government grants.

The Foundation actively manages a portfolio of investments and undertakes fundraising for specific purposes including:

• The Gawura Scholarship Fund

• The SACS Building Fund, and the

• The Heath Bursary Fund

It is also a member of the Australian Sports Foundation, allowing donations to sports projects to be tax deductible.

To achieve this, the Foundation actively involves the wider SACS community in a variety of initiatives and events including annual giving, Giving Days, trivia nights, Gala dinners and cocktail evenings. The generosity of the wider community benefits the students of SACS and Gawura significantly and is greatly appreciated by both schools.

For more information on the SACS Foundation, please visit the school website at www.sacs.nsw.edu.au

For more information on Gawura or the variety of ways you can assist, please contact Catherine Gunning, Gawura Fundraising & Foundation Development Manager at: [email protected]

For more information on the Building Fund, Heath Bursary Fund or sports fund, please contact Lyn Jarvis, Director of Community Engagement at: [email protected]

.

The Gawura Scholarship Fund

The Gawura Scholarship Fund educates

local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

children at our school within a school,

Gawura, located inside the St Andrew’s

Cathedral Junior School. It also pays for

Gawura Secondary Scholarships for

those students who choose to join

the mainstream St Andrew’s

Cathedral School in Year 7.

Gawura has been operating for 13 years

and is St Andrew’s Cathedral School’s

contribution to the national

reconciliation agenda.

Gawura employs nine Indigenous staff

members. In 2020 Gawura has 33

students in deliberately small class

groups where students are taught

numeracy and literacy intensively for

fifty per cent of each day, with language

and culture woven into every aspect of

learning. Students have a ‘buddy class’ in

the Junior School for their other

lessons, and have weekly Wiradjuri

lessons. Wiradjuri language is also taught

in the Junior School.

Gawura helps our students overcome

barriers and their socio-economic

disadvantage and enriches the lives of

the whole SACS community. Students

live in areas including Redfern,

Woolloomooloo, Glebe and Pyrmont.

Students travel to and from school each

day on a bus donated by supporters.

Gawura has strong ties to our families

and the local communities and without

the active support of parents,

grandparents, aunties and uncles,

children would not be actively taking

up the opportunities that being a

part of this unique school provides.

Donations to support our students

come from individual donors,

corporates and foundations.

Funding does not come from SACS

school fees, but support through

donations, volunteering or assistance

with fundraising by SACS families is

more than welcomed.

SACS Building Fund

This provides an importance source of funding for capital projects. It plays a pivotal role in maintaining and improving school facilities. We appreciate the generosity of families who donate to the Building Fund when paying their fees. This provides the school with the financial security to continually revitalise the school campus. All donations to the building fund are tax-deductible.

Projects that the Building Fund has supported in recent years include the new science laboratories in Senior College, the new Sports Centre in St Andrew’s House, and the upcoming development of Upper Chapter House into an exciting performing arts space. We look forward to the complete transformation of this beautiful heritage building by mid-2020.

We appreciate the generosity of families who donate to the Building Fund when paying their fees

Heath Bursary Fund

This fund was created to support SACS families who have been impacted by dreadful circumstances such as serious illness, life-changing accidents, bereavements or other tragedies that severely disrupt family life. It is recognised that at this time, it is more important than ever for a child to continue to be part of the nurturing school community that has been a constant in their life.

The fund raises money to help these families by providing fee relief to ensure that a child’s education and school life at SACS can continue when trauma surrounds them. We are grateful to the generosity of our wider community, that continues to support our families with their donation. All donations are tax-deductible.

Sports projects through ASFAt SACS we believe that young people who are physically fit and enthusiastically challenged in an enjoyable and safe sporting environment can perform better academically, socially and emotionally. Donations to sport can be made through the Australian Sports Foundation. This allows our donations to be tax-deductible and support the development of sports across all grades, sports and students. The intention is to direct funds to create a strong sports program for the students.
