1.2AlternativePathways
TheVictorianCurriculumandAssessmentAuthority(VCAA)hasaccreditedAl-TaqwaCollegetoprovidetheVictorianCertificateofEducation(VCE)andVictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning(VCAL)seniorsecondaryprograms.Thesetwoprogramsandtheirresultantqualificationsexistside-by-sideandcaterfordifferentlearningstylesandinterestsofstudents(seethePathwaysdiagrambelow).
VictorianCertificateofEducation(VCE)TheVCEisaseniorsecondaryqualificationthatprovidesapathwaytouniversityentranceatthe undergraduate level. It is usually undertaken over two years, although this may beextendedtothreeyears.SuccessfulcompletionoftheVCErequiresstudentstosatisfactorilycompleteatotalof16semesterunitswhichmustinclude:
• ThreeunitsofEnglishincludingUnits3and4,and• ThreeothersubjectsequencesofUnits3and4.
Students who successfully complete the VCE in Year 12 are given an Australian TertiaryAdmissionRank(ATAR)between0and99.95.TheATARisbasedonthescaledresultsofthefourhighestsubjectscores(includingEnglish)plus10%ofthescaledresultsofanyfifthandsixthsubjects.Thisrankingisusedbyuniversitiesforselectionofstudentsintocourses.The method of study in VCE is mostly logic- or academic-based learning, drawing onknowledgedevelopedovertime.Studentscommittomemorydetailedknowledgeandskillsrelatedtoeachsubject.AtAl-TaqwaCollege,studentsaregivenplentyofscopetoacquireatleast16semesterunits,assixsubjectsareundertakeninYear11andfivesubjectsinYear12.Oncompletion,studentsareissuedwithaCertificateofUnitssatisfactorilycompleted,aStatementofResults(grades)inthesubjectsundertaken,andanATAR.VictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning(VCAL)SeniorTheVCALSeniorisalsoaseniorsecondaryqualification.Itprovides,inmostcases,apathwaytoTAFEandVocationalEducationandTraining(VET)programsatthecertificateordiplomalevel aswell as apprenticeships and traineeships. ThelearningapproachusedinVCALfocuseson‘handson’practicallearningwiththeaimofachievinga certain skill standard.Oncompletion, studentsare issuedwithaCertificateofUnitssatisfactorilycompleted.Studentshavedifferent likesand interests.Studentsalso learndifferently–some learnbyimitating or following the behaviour of others; some learn by rote through regularlycommittinginformationtomemory;somelearnbylogicallystructuringinformationintheirmind then analysing using this structure; some learn from practical ‘hands on’ appliedactivities;otherslearnthroughsomeoralloftheabovemethods.BythetimeastudentfinishesYear10,seniorschoolstaffwillbeabletoassessandadvisewhichprogram–VCEorVCALSenior–willbestsuiteachstudent.Studentsshouldalsobeabletoidentifywhichprogrambestsuitstheirinterestsandlearningstyle.
Al-TaqwaCollegeregularlyteststheknowledgeandskillsthatstudentspossess inordertoassesstheiracademiclearningandappliedlearningcapabilities.TheCollegealsoprovidesacareersprogramandcounsellingforallstudentstohelpthemidentifytheirinterests,relatedcareeroptions,andtherelevantsenioreducationprogramthatmatchestheirinterestsandcareeraspirations.Al-TaqwaCollegealsodelaysthechoiceofVCEorVCALSeniorprogramsforaslongaspossibletogivestudentsandparent’stimetoconsidertheirchoices.
Whatdothetwopathwayshaveincommon?1. BothpathwaysresultinYear12qualifications,providedthenecessaryunitsofstudy
aresatisfactorilycompleted.
2. BothpathwaysareprovidedbyseniorsecondaryschoolsinVictoriaandteachingisbyVictorianInstituteofTeaching(VIT)qualifiedteachers;althoughVETcomponentsofVCALhaveVET-trainedteachers.
3. BothpathwaysresultinseniorsecondaryqualificationswithsimilarcertificatesissuedbytheVCAAforsatisfactoryperformance.VCEstudentsalsoreceiveastatementofgradesineachstudy.
4. BothCertificatesenableentrytoemploymentimmediatelyorafterfurtherstudy.
5. Insomecases,bothqualificationscanleadtothesamequalificationandcareerpath–adegreeandcareerinmarketing,forexample.AstudentmightsatisfactorilycompleteVCALSenior,enteraTAFE/VETinstitution(e.g.Swinburne),satisfactorilycompletetheDiplomaandAdvancedDiplomainMarketing,thenswitchtothefinalyearofadegreein marketing at the university/higher education section of the institution (e.g.Swinburne).

Alternatively,astudentmightsatisfactorilycompletetheVCEandachieveanATARthatallows thementry intoa three-yearmarketingdegreeatauniversity/highereducationinstitution.Thepathwaythatbestsuitsastudentdependsontheinterestsandlearningstyleofthatstudent.
1.3Whatarethedifferencesbetweenthetwopathways?
1. Themaindifferenceisthelearningapproach.IntheVCEprogram,studentsresearch
informationandcommitittomemoryinordertoanswerexaminationquestions.ThisacademicapproachisdifferenttothelearningapproachintheVCALprogram.VCALstudents learn through ‘hands on’ action and get several chances to demonstratecompetency.TheVCALapproachemphasisespracticalapplication,whereastheVCEapproachismoreacademicwithanemphasisonusingthemind.
2. TheaiminVCAListoachieveacertainstandard,whereasintheVCE,theaimistodobetterthanothersinordertogetahigherranking(ATAR)foruniversityentrance.
3. Whileinsomecases,bothprogramscanleadtothesameemploymentopportunitiese.g. marketing and business, inmost cases, the programs lead to different careerpaths. TheVCE leads todegrees,masters, anddoctoratesandoccupations suchasmedical doctors, engineers, lawyers, scientists, biologists, economists, accountantsandsoon,whereasVCALleadstocertificates,diplomasandadvanceddiplomasandcareersinareaslikeconstruction,hairdressing,hospitalityandcommunityservices.

1.4VictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning(VCAL)Senior
TheVCALSeniorisalsoaYear12seniorsecondaryqualificationthatprovidesentrytoVETcertificates and diplomas. The focus of the program is obtaining of skills using ‘hands-on’methodsoflearning.TheVCALSeniorisusuallyatwo-yearprogramofstudybutmaybecompletedinashortertime in some cases. Successful completion requires students to satisfactorily complete aminimumof10semesterunitsthatmustinclude:
• SixunitsattheYear12level• TwoVCAL-designedunits• OneYear12LiteracySkillsunit• OneNumeracySkillsunit• OnePersonalDevelopmentSkillsunit• VETunitswhichmaycoverWork-RelatedSkillsandIndustry-SpecificSkills.
UnlikeVCE,therearenomarks issuedfor levelsofperformance,sonoATARiscalculated.However,ifaVCALSeniorstudentwishestoundertakeadegreeatuniversity,thewaytodothisistoenteradiplomacourse(perhapsatauniversitycollegesuchasDeakinCollege),thenproceedtothesecondyearofauniversitydegree.AtAl-TaqwaCollege,studentsalsoundertakeworkexperiencetofamiliarisethemselveswiththeworkplace.

2.1EnrolmentAtthebeginningofeachacademicyear,studentssignaPersonalDeclarationFormprovidedby the VASS Coordinator. In this Declaration, students agree to abide by the rules andinstructionsonconductintheVCEassessmentprogram,aswellasAlTaqwaCollege’srulesonschool-basedassessmentsandexternalVCEassessments.
StudentsmustalsosignadeclarationinwhichtheyagreetoabidebytheCollege’spolicyandrulesonappropriateinternetuse.
Year10StudentEntrancetoVCE
In2020,someYear10studentsmayundertakeVCEUnits1and2.Eligibilityforentryisbasedonobtaining:
• An average of 70% or more in the Year 9 English Semester 1 and 2 Exams,
regardless ofwhichVCE Study the studentwishes to undertake. [Without highachievementinEnglishatYear9level,astudentCANNOTundertakeanyVCEStudyinYear10.]
AND
• Anaverageof70%ormoreintheYear9Semester1and2ExamsintheproposedVCEStudyarea.Thatis:- For VCE Business Management, 70% or more in the Year 9 Humanities
Semester1and2Exams,and- ForVCEPsychology,BiologyandHealthandHumanDevelopment,70%ormore
intheYear9ScienceSemester1and2Exams.
TheVCEPanelmakesthefinaldecisionaboutadvancedVCEentrybasedonastudent’sabilitytoundertakeaVCEStudyinYear10aswellasanytimetableconstraints.OtherinformationavailabletotheVCEPanelaboutastudent’spotentialincludesMathematicsperformanceinYear9,performanceinNAPLANLiteracyandNumeracytestsinYear9,andrecommendationsfromYear9subjectteachers.
Year11StudentEntryintotheVCE
Studentswhowish toundertakeaVCEStudy inYear11 in2020mustmeet the followingprerequisitesforthevariousUnit1subjects:

StudentswhodonotsatisfactorilycompleteUnits1or2ofaVCEStudyorfailtoobtaina50%orhighergradecannotgainentryintoUnits3and4inthatStudyinYear12.
StudentswhoarenotprogressingsatisfactorilyinaUnit3VCEStudy(e.g.theyarefailingtoobtaina50%orhighergrade)willbeofferedacontracttocompleteUnit3ofthatStudy.Ifthestudentdoesnotadheretothecontract,theywillnotbepermittedtositfortheexternalexaminationortransfertotheVCALSeniorProgram.2.2TeachingandLearning TheminimumattendancerequirementforVCE,andthereforeanyunitorpartcoveringSAC,is 90% of scheduled classes, unless the student has applied for and been granted SpecialProvision for significant hardship. Failure to attend classes will lead to the award of ‘N’(unsatisfactory)andwilljeopardiseastudent’schancesofobtainingtheVCEorVCALSenior.
WhileatAlTaqwaCollege,studentsareexpectedtorespectandcontributetotheacademicnatureoftheVCEandthepracticalmethodsofVCALSenior.Thisincludesundertakingallsetworkinaprofessionalmanner.
Studentsmusthavetheresourcesandcomputingfacilitiesneededinordertofullyparticipateinandoutofclass.
2.3AssessmentTheminimumrequirementfortheawardofVCEissatisfactorycompletionof16unitswhichmustinclude:
• ThreeunitsfromtheEnglishgroup,includingUnits3and4,and• AtleastthreesequencesofUnit3–4studiesotherthanEnglish,whichmayinclude
anynumberofEnglishsequencesoncetheEnglishrequirementhasbeenmet.
Satisfactorycompletionofaunit(VCEorVCALSenior)meansthatforeachOutcomeintheunit,thestudenthas:
• Producedworkthatdemonstratestheirunderstandingofthespecifiedknowledgeandskills
• Submittedworkontime(timely)• Submittedworkthatisclearlyhis/herown(authentic)• ObservedtheVCAAandAl-TaqwaCollegerules(includingattendance)
StudentsandparentsarenotifiedatthecommencementofeachOutcomeineachunitabouta forthcoming assessment and the nature of that assessment. Unless there are seriouscircumstances, studentsonlyhaveonechance toundertake theschoolassessmenton the

datenotified.UnauthorisedabsencebyastudentwillresultinnomarksbeingallocatedintheVCEand,consequently,alowerATAR;althoughsatisfactorycompletioncanberedeemedinotherways.
VCEstudentsalsoundertakeVCAAexaminationsincludingamid-yearGeneralAchievementTest (GAT).Theseexaminationsare important indetermininga student’smarks forATAR.Theyarecompulsory.
Pleasenote thata failurebyastudent todohis/herbestwillbringdowntheStudyScoreaverageandtherebypenaliseallstudentsinthatStudy.Forthisreason,theCollegeisveryobservantofstudentbehaviorandperformance.Forthesakeofall,anystudentnotbehavingorperformingathis/herbestwillbeofferedatransfertoVCALSenior.
2.4ReportingPerformanceTheCollegesendsdataaboutyoursonordaughtertotheVCAAusingtheVASScomputersystem.StudentscompleteaPersonalDetailsFormtoensurethedataiscorrect.Studentsaregivenaprintouttocheckandsign.
Marks/gradesanddetailsofsatisfactorycompletionarealsoenteredintothesystemforeachstudent. Teachers provide this information and are given printouts to check that what isenteredisaccurate.
PleasenotethatprivacylawsapplytostudentdatathatisprovidedandenteredintoVASS.
Inaddition,theCollegereportstoparentseachterm.Parentsmayconsultcoordinatorsandteachersatanytime,providedtheappropriaterequestismade.

Twiceaterm,studentsinYears9–12areprovidedwithacareersletterthatcontainsarangeof career related information. Its purpose is to give students information about seminars,informationsessionsfromindustrystakeholdersandcareer-relatedtopicsofinterest.SubjectsExpo,CareersWeekandInformationEvenings
Once a year, prior to the beginning of the subject-selection process, the College providesparentsandstudentsprimarily inYear9and10with theopportunity toenquireaboutallsubjectstheschoolhasonoffer.Withsubjectteachers,headsofdepartmentsandsubjectresourcesavailable,studentsandparentsareprovidedwithanopportunitytoaskanddelveintothespecificsofalltheavailablesubjectsandthecareerseachsubjectcanleadto.
InTerm1ofeachyear,theCollegeholdsitsannualCareersWeek.Duringthisweek,studentsfrom Years 10–12 are exposed to a Careers Expowhere universities visit the College andengagedirectlywithstudents.Professionalsfromarangeoffieldssuchasengineeringandrobotics,medicineandlawalsoattendtheExpo.
