• Students will be able to cite a book, an internet source, and a scholarly journal using correct MLA format with 80% accuracy.

Paraphrasing vs. Quotations

Paraphrase

• a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in another form, as for clearness; rewording.

• a SUMMARY

Direct Quotation

• Use of the exact words written in a source

• COPYING DIRECTLY from what is written – (this is ok, as long as you cite and use quotations)

What’s the Difference?

• In your own words – Write down what is the difference between Paraphrasing and Quoting

• Paraphrasing is a summary in your own words

• Quoting is using the words of the author

Citations using MLA Format

• When writing research papers you must always include a works cited page that has a list of your sources.

• There are specific ways different types of sources must be cited.

• Let’s go over the 3 major ones you will be using for this assignment: books, scholarly journal articles, and internet websites.

Books

• Book citations must have the following information in the following order:• Author’s name (Last name, First name)• Title of the Book• Place of Publication• Name of Publisher• Date of Publication or Copyright

• Your entry must be formatted in the following way (yes, with all the punctuation done correctly!):

Last name, First name. Title of the Book. Place of Publication: Name of Publisher, Date of Publication.

Book Example

• Title: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian• Author: Sherman Alexie• Published by: Little Brown and Company• Published in: New York• Copyright: 2007

Scholarly Journal

• Scholarly Journal citations must have the following information in the following order:• Author’s name (Last name, First name)• Title of the Article• Name of the Journal• Volume Number• Issue Number• Date of Publication• Page numbers of Article

• Your entry must be formatted in the following way:

Last name, First name. “Title of the Article.” Title of the Journal. Volume Number.Issue Number (Date of Publication): Page Numbers of Article.
