RCM Immersion Programs – A RCM sustainability initiative
RCM Immersion Program is a capability
development and sustainability initiative
started under the Param Sankalp banner
since October 2017. Sustainability of RCM
practices and O&M culture change are
critical to the Param Sankalp program. The
vision is that by the time the program is over
everyone in the company speaks the RCM
language. So, a dedicated RCM Academy
conducts training with the help of RCM
partners AT Kearney. The Academy in
collaboration with AT Kearney developed the
training content. The first activity of the team
was to identify and train a group of internal
trainers and analysts from all divisions of
Tata Power. The team has conducted four
RCM Immersion training sessions of two
days each for 50 internal trainers.
Now, members from the Academy and AT
Kearney travel to sites and cover other O&M
personnel along with the internal trainers of
the respective division. AT Kearney and RCM
Core Team are handholding the internal
trainers in the first few trainings. Once the
academy establishes that the internal trainers
are ready, the internal trainers will train the
rest of the O&M personnel using the
customized content for each site. The
internal trainers have started training across
division since December 2017 and they have
covered 216 employees across all divisions of Tata Power. The academy targets to cover
100% employees by September 2018.
Data Analytics is an important pillar of RCM and the Param Sankalp program. RCM
Academy along with AT Kearney developed a Basic Analytics package and trained a
group of identified employees across divisions. Three such training sessions were
conducted across divisions. Further to this there were two “Advanced Analytics”
sessions conducted for employees in collaboration with IIT Bombay.
All the training sessions have helped our O&M personnel to see the RCM philosophy
and the elements more closely. The RCM Academy has played an instrumental role in
ensuring sustainability and institutionalization of RCM practices across divisions.

RCM Knowledge Fair at Hydros and T&DKnowledge Fair is a Tata Power
initiative for sharing of best practices,
knowledge, innovations and solutions
implemented at sites. Now each site is
conducting its own knowledge fair which is a
smaller version of the original. Although it is a
division specific initiative, the participation and
the scale of ideas are in line with the bigger
version conducted every year in Khopoli.
Param Sankalp participated in the
knowledge fairs in Transmission and
Distribution, and Hydros. It displayed the key
concepts and the achievements in the
respective divisions. The team also prepared
two games to reinforce the concepts of RCM
and saw huge participation. One of the games
was to emphasise on the root causes and failure
modes. The other was to emphasis on how
Preventive Maintenance is better than
corrective maintenance.

"Reliability Centered Maintenance” or
“PARAM-SANKALP” is an initiative which
is to be considered as a long-term basis
corporate level strategic initiative that has
launched in Tata Power a year ago. This is a process to analyze and integrate both the
commercial and technical aspects across various processes. Using the tools like FMEA,
Codification etc. we are trying to analyses different strategies and techniques of processes
and make them stream lined in the most optimized way. It was really an enriching
experience to be part of Station Heat Rate Optimization drive for MPL, in which we not
only reinvented the whole process but also discovered new depths in the present system and
improvements that can come because of these exercises. The experts of various internal
initiatives like COI, Sankalp, even small projects like SPS, Six Sigma, S+5S etc. is getting
involved which also in tern benefit us as a knowledge bank of this process. Digitization of
the concept will definitely bring some fruitful results at a larger aspect. We all need to boost
the process and implement this in all aspect of our processes.
My CornerConversations with you…
Mr. Himadri Bhattacharjee, LeadEngineer – Performance andEfficiency. Part of SHR FMEAand MPL Value Initiatives
Improvement in O & M strategy through RCM and involvement of O & M personnel at the
grass root level is the key and primary focus area at CGPL. Formation of Communities of
Interest (CoIs) is one of the best initiatives implemented by Tata Power, which ensures that
the potential across the organization is being leveraged for productive and innovative
solutions. Various ideation workshops were conducted involving more than 30 engineers and
as an outcome, various cross functional teams have been formed at CGPL for value
realization and to ensure maximum participation through RCM. People are involved in
finalizing SAP catalogues and carrying out data cleansing for first set of equipment, which
is a critical activity as RCM is very data driven. Such a transformation program requires
capability development for which our O & M Engineers are undergoing RCM Immersion
training to acquaint themselves with the terminology of RCM and talk the RCM language.
The training is interactive and creates awareness, which will result in successful adoption
and implementation of RCM.
I hereby urge all of you to have a focused approach, a motivated mindset and adopt RCM as
a way of working. Doing so will make the RCM implementation journey a successful one
and enable each of us to give our best at the workplace every single day.
Mr. Brajesh Singh, Chief
O&M, CGPL. Leading
RCM initiatives at CGPL.
Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a proventool for continuous improvement focused aroundreliability. Reliability, and not availability, hasbecome the key word in this new age of Operationand Maintenance (O & M).

Problems were solved in silos.
Communities of Interest (CoI) have been formed for cross division problem sharing and efficient problem solving.
There is some issue with the Turbine!
How do we solve
this problem
?
We have tried
everything internally
We have analyzed data too!
We have raised the issue to COI –Turbine and it is being
discussed across divisions
The other division had faced this problem.
They guided us and
solved the problem.
