YOURITINERARY….

Day1-2:ArriveCuiaba,transfertoPousaAlegre,startyouradventure!(2nights)Afteryour flight toBrazil (preferably toSaoPaulo),youwillhave thenconnectedontoadomestic flight toCuiaba,wherewewillbewaitingforyou.Ofcourse,thisislikelytobeatiredmorningafteralongovernightflight,andadomestictransfer,butwe’llsoongetridofthecobwebsbygettingsomelunch intownbeforeheading off to the start of theworld-famous ‘Transpantaneira’ Roadwhich bisects the Pantanal. Oncewereachthestartoftheofficialroute,wewilltransferfromoursmallcoachintoanopensidedsafaritruck.Theextraheight thisgivesus is critical, as itpermitsus to lookoutacross the landscapeandspotanimalsandbirdsasweheadtowardsourfirst lodge. Ifanysituationsarisethatwewishtomakemoreof,we’llsimplypull-up, disembarkwith cameras in hand, and then head off to start shooting! The truck has a canopy toprotect from the sun (and rainonoccasion!), but is completelyotherwiseopenat theback. This canbe ablessing as the air sweeps across us, bringing down the temperatures, but also givesmuch of a feeling of“immersion” into the landscape aswe go.Our first two nightswill be spent at Pousa Alegre. This homelyFazenda(Estancia/Farm) is fullofwildlife includingcoatis,marmosets,howlermonkeys,anteater(giantandlesser),tapir(ifwe’relucky),deerandevenpumas!Thebirdlifeisalsosensational,andtherearesomegreatencounterstobehadwithcaimanaswell.Allinall,thisisagreatplacetostartouradventurefortwonights,givingusthechancetotryallsortsofdifferentphotography,onfootandfromthetruck,andfeelthegroundbeneathourfeet.(2nightsPousaAlegre,B,L,D)Days3-8:TheJaguarlandFlotel(6nights)AnearlystartfromourlodgeasweheadonwardstotheendsoftheTranspantaneira,stoppingforanygreatsightingsontheway.Theroaditselfisamarvel,withover130bridgesandthephotographicopportunitiesareendless.Bylatemorning,wewillarriveatPortoJofre,andafterbiddinga(temporary!)farewelltoourSafariTruck,willtransfertoourspeciallyadaptedphoto-boatfortheridetotheFlotel–afloatinglodge,mooredupriverandawayfromthecircusthatisthemainlodgeareaatPortoJofre!Ourboatisequippedwithindividualcameramountsforeachperson,withaswivelseat...infact,you’llfeellikeyou’reonsomemilitarygunboataswe head off up-river. This will be our transport for the next 6 days of Jaguar (and other river wildlife)searching...andwe’llbestartingrightafterlunchthatday.Wewillthenfollowadailypatternofleavingearlyfromthelodge,cruisingtheriversandtheirsmallertributaries,andconstantlysearchingforfantasticwildlifeencounters.Fromabutterflyrestingonacaiman’seyelid,toaJaguarhuntingintheshadows...allthingsarepossible.AtnightwewillbebackontheFlotel–meaningthatwegetlongereverysingledaythanthosewhostayatPortoJofreandhaveto“commute”4timesaday(astheygohomeforlunch...whenwewillstayout!)and waste hours on non-productive parts of the river system. By being out as much as we can be (andobviously,sometimes logisticsmaydictateashortpit-stopbackatthe lodge inthemiddleoftheday),andneverawayfromthemainaction,wearecertaintogivethemaximumpossiblechanceforexcellentwildlifesightingsandphotoops.Infact,itgetsmeexcitedjustthinkingaboutit!(6nightsJaguarland“Flotel”,B,L,D)

Days9-10:SantaTeresaLodge(2nights)Aftersixdaysontheriver,wewilltransferafteranearlybreakfastbacktoPortoJofre,tore-connectwithourSafari Truck (see...I told you the parting was only temporary!) and commence our journey back up theTranspantaneiraroadtoSantaTeresaLodge–ourhomefor2nights–wherewewillcheckin,discussourplanfor theremainingdaysandenjoydinner.Ouractivitieshereare land-based looking forwildlife,butwewillalso use a small boat to check out the river here for otters and birdlife, and on one night, perhaps use aspeciallyconstructedhidewhereOcelotareknowntofrequentforthat“onceinalifetime”chanceofsnaringoneof theworld’smostelusiveandbeautiful cats. Wehaveexcellentkingfisherphotographyat this lodgealso,andwillmakethemostofthattoo.(2nightsSantaTeresaPantanalLodge,B,L,D)

Day11:DepartforCuiaba…andonwardUltimately,though,ouradventurewillcometoanend,andwewilltransferontoouroriginalvehicletoheadbacktocivilizationandCuiabaairport.Wecanarrangetodropyouhere,orinthecityitself,butthisiswherewewillbidourlastfarewellsandrecalltheamazingwildlifeexperienceswe’vesharedforthelast11days.

Ifyou’reheadingtoBrazil,youmaywellwanttokeepexperiencingthatsambarhythmforafewdaysmoreattheendofyourtrip,andassuchwehaveanumberoffantasticphotographicoptionsthatwecansetyouupwith using our tried and trusted network of hides, locations, guides and contacts.
