WALTER SCOTT’S
WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...
RYAN REYNOLDSIn the sci-fi thriller Self/less, now in theaters, Reynolds, 38, plays the victim of “shedding” as a dying, rich man’s consciousness is transferred into a younger, healthier body. One of the themes of Self/less is mak-ing the most of the time you’ve got. What is time well spent to you? “I’m supposed to say family, friends and stop-ping to smell the fl owers. That’s true, but I also consider time well spent to be any time I’m neck deep in something miser-able. Moments that brought me the most joy usually involved elements of sheer panic, despair and/or danger.”
There’s a lot of action in Self/less. Do you like mixing it up, or are you happy to turn it over to your stuntman?“I spent a lot of years taking pride in performing my own stunts. A couple of years back, I broke two vertebrae in my neck in a stunt gone wrong. Since then, I’ve been happy to hand over the big stuff to the professionals.”
Is there something you would like to buy more time to do? “A little more time to read. The digital age has taken
a toll on my reading. I spend too much time looking at my phone or computer these days.”
Who in history would you like to be given a second life? “Buddy Holly. If you think about the incredible amount of music he put out in such a short period, you’ve gotta wonder what he’d have done with more time.”
Now that the beautiful Chanel Iman made a movie,
will she quit modeling?
—Sheikina K., Baltimore, Md.
A: Defi nitely not. While Iman, 24, hopes to add
more acting to her debut as the sexy, zesty Lily in the
coming-of-age comedy-drama Dope, the Victoria’s Secret model continues to do fashion shoots. “People are so used to seeing me
glamorous and put-togeth-er,” she says. “So I took this
part because Lily is edgy. And I wanted people to see
that I could act.”
1. She speaks fl uent German.
4. She is allergic to horses.
5. Despite starring in Gravity and having a grandfather who was a rocket scientist, she has no desire to go into space.
2. A cheerleader at Wash-ington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., she was also voted “Most Likely to Brighten Up Your Day.”
Sweetheart orSuper-Villain?Sandra Bullock, 50, made a name for herself with the movies Speed, Miss Congeniality, Gravity and The Blind Side, and now she enters the world of animation in Minions (which opened July 10), voicing the role of super-villain Scarlet Overkill. Here are fi ve fun facts about the Oscar-winning actress.
3. She loves Gummi Bears.
Q: As a fan of the fi rst Joe Dirt, I am looking forward to seeing the se-quel. When and where will it air?
—Stevie W., Allentown, Pa.
A: Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser will be available exclusively on the comedy website crackle.com on July 16. Star and writer David Spade, 50, says not a day goes by that he doesn’t hear from fans crazy for his original 2001 cult-classic comedy about a “white trash” loser whose better qualities are eventually revealed. Dirt 2 also features Brittany Daniel, Patrick Warburton and Christopher Walken.
Q
Q: How did country music star Kix Brooks come to host a show on the Cooking Channel?
—Randy T., Kansas City, Mo.A: Brooks, 60, half of country music duo Brooks & Dunn,
raises cattle and was thinking of opening a steakhouse. But he needed advice from some experts. One thing led to
another, which led to Steak Out with Kix Brooks, in which he checks out a variety of steakhouses across America. The new show fi res up its fi rst season July 14. “The most valuable lesson I learned is most of the great chefs are salt-and-pepper guys,” says Brooks. “They add their sauces after.”
Q: I enjoyed Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol, so now I’ve tuned in to watch her on So You Think You Can Dance. How old was she when she started dancing?
—Jeffrey D., Lima, Ohio
A: Abdul, 53, says, “I was four when I fi rst watched Singing in the Rain with my family, and I fell in love with Gene Kelly. My parents said that I stood up and proclaimed, ‘I’m going to be an entertainer.’” She began dance lessons at age 7, and later choreographed the movies Can’t Buy Me Love, Big and Coming to America, which led to her job on SYTYCD, Monday nights on Fox.

It’s common knowledge that drinking salt water when you’re dehydrated is dangerous. Yet in the days before sports drinks, the first thing we got for dehydration during football practice was salt tablets with water. What’s the difference?
—E.S., Knoxville, Tenn.
The main difference is the amount of salt. When you’re dehydrated, you need water, all right, but you need electrolytes (the scientific term for various salts) to survive too. Seawater has way too much of these salts, which can cause you to become more dehydrated than if you hadn’t drunk anything at all. But if you’re both dehydrated and low on salts—which is common in extreme physical activity, especially when you’re sweating heavily—and you drink only fresh water (which has very little salt), you will develop an electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes are necessary for basic cell functions, and symptoms range from mild to severe. You can die from a lack of these salts; hence the old-fashioned salt tablets to prevent this from happening. They’re not used much today because they typically provided only two of the necessary electrolytes (sodium and chloride), and they could easily provide too much of them if not enough water was drunk at the same time. For extreme exercisers, modern sports drinks do the job much more safely.

My 3-year-old granddaughter was born and lives in London with her parents, who grew up in the U.S. She has an English accent. She does have English friends, but she still spends nearly all her time with her parents. Why doesn’t she sound American?
—M. D., Chicago
Young children sound like their parents only until they start to socialize. Then they acquire the accent of their peers and forever sound different from mom and dad. If your granddaughter’s friends were mostly Americans, she would sound American. Or if the family had lived in the U.S., then moved to England when she was a teen —around puberty, one’s homegrown accent is ingrained—she would always sound like them.

and wandering where it wants, as it does when you just doodle.
“It’s impossible to worry about dinner or the laundry or anything else when your mind is completely engaged,” Domar explains. “With knitting or other crafts, you can watch TV or multitask, but coloring really requires you to be in the moment. And that makes it medita-tive.” She suggests coloring to patients who need stress relief, particularly those who loved the activity as a child. “Coloring brings you back to a simpler time, it’s pleasurable, it’s a chance to sit and be mindful…and at the end you get
this beautiful result. t’s 8 p.m., and I’m in the zone.
I’ve been here for about an hour now. e world and its cares have dropped away. Work stress, money
worries, health concerns and arguments with my 9-year-old son have all faded. at nattering voice in my head that usually gets busy nagging, judging and replaying the slights and hurts of the day has been silenced.
A total transformation of mind and spirit has taken place. It’s just me, the book in front of me, a box of 48 Prisma-color pencils and a simple choice: coral or turquoise? Turquoise, I decide, planning the way I’ll run a blue-green-silver color scheme through a section of the beauti-ful pattern I’m working on. I’m coloring in my Posh Adult Coloring Book: Soothing Designs for Fun & Relaxation (Andrews McMeel)—and as I’ve worked, my frown has literally turned upside down.
As of this minute, you can color me happy.
e Coloring Cr e Takes Off at’s right, I’m a middle-aged woman who’s spending her evenings these days coloring. And I’m hardly alone. Others have caught on to the magical, mood-lifting power of their erstwhile childhood pastime, and together we’re
giving rise to a craze unsurpassed since the days we had Donny Osmond fever. ere’s a new world of intricate, beautiful coloring books aimed at adults—and we’re snap-ping them up like hotcakes.
What exactly does a grown-up color, you may ask? ink paisleys, botanicals, animals, mandelas (symbols used in Hinduism or Buddhism that represent wholeness), enchanted forests, cats, deco-rative fans and Benedict Cumberbatch. Yes, there’s a Colour Me Good Benedict Cumber-batch coloring book (part of cheeky line of books by British illustrator Mel Elliott that also features Ryan Gosling and Taylor Swift). It’s even rumored that a Game of rones coloring book is in the works.
Benedict Cumberbatch aside, the major-ity of adults who color want to create something beautiful. Take Andie Ray, 48, a real estate agent in Knoxville, Tenn. When she fi rst laid eyes on an adult coloring book “my heart just jumped,” Ray recalls. “Right away, I bought two: Magic Garden (Barron’s) and Mandala Magic (Barron’s).”
Like me, she fi nds coloring an easy way to downshift in the midst of a busy life. “Everything else in my life is hurry up, hurry up, hurry up. I’m constantly
bombarded, and I always have trouble calming down,” she says. “But now I turn off the computer and TV, and I have this beautiful hobby to go to. I decide what I want to do, how much I want to work on tonight, and immediately I’m more relaxed and happier.”
Color for Your HealthWhile other hobbies might relax you, coloring off ers complete absorption. “It engages both sides of your brain in that it’s both creative and tacti-cal,” says psychologist Alice Domar, Ph.D., executive director of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health in Boston. e creativity comes with envisioning the color selection and how it will play throughout the piece, while the tactical involves applying your decisions to the artist’s design. Both keep your right brain from taking over

You have a real sense of accomplishment.”
“I saw coloring books on Amazon, and was immediately intrigued,” says Kevin Tober, 50, of Pompano Beach, Fla. “I ordered a few and some markers and really found the process of coloring the more involved mandala-type designs to be extremely relaxing. I am disabled with chronic pain, so anything that enables me to escape to a meditative mindset is a huge benefi t to me.”
Collaboration & SharingPart of the joy of coloring is co-creating the page with the designer of the book. “By choosing a range of colors and where to place them in the design, you are creating something unique,” says
P.C. Turczyn, a mandala artist who leads workshops at New York’s
Omega Institute and often off ers her students pages to
color as a way to open the door to creativity. Welsh artist Millie Marotta, author of the lush Animal Kingdom (Lark Crafts), a book that has sold over a million copies world-wide, intentionally makes coloring books as a co-creative experience. “I see it as a
collaboration between me and the people who are
coloring. e illustrations start off looking exactly the

same, but are turned into something absolutely unique,” she says. “After many hours of coloring, the illustrations are very much their own art-works.” Many who color can’t resist sharing the fruits of their cre-ativity. Social media feeds are fi lled with colored creations,
and Pinterest boasts a myriad of coloring boards. Posting coloring pages has become the 21st-century version of hang-ing pictures on the fridge!
Co-Creating the CalmColoring may be a meditative pursuit, but it works in gath-erings too, for both socializa-tion and group therapy. Shyla Jannusch, 43, hosts coloring parties in Chicago and started a Coloring for All! Facebook page. Today, that group has
upwards of 3,800 members. “Coloring is a way to build bonds with other people with no judgment,” she says. “It’s almost like an old-fashioned quilting bee—a place where ladies get together to talk, color and share their lives with one another.”
By contrast, my own fi rst
group experience with three girlfriends came after a shared trauma—the death of a loved one. We had much to talk about but needed sooth-ing too. Coloring together provided the latter, the strokes moving the conversation from hyper-emotional tears toward calm philosophical musings and shared memories. As ease settled among us, the books and pens and pencils fell by the wayside. Once again, we’d been colored calm.
Color Your MoodColors themselves carry therapeutic qualities, according to licensed clinical professional art therapist Lacy Mucklow, co-author of the coloring books Color Me Happy and Color Me Calm. Selecting colors can literally affect your mood. Here’s a guide to how you can use colors to rev up or calm down—or combine them for a total mood makeover.
Cool colors like blue, green and purple have a calming effect. Use them to literally chill out.Warm colors like red, orange and yellow are pepper-uppers. Try them when you want to brighten a bad mood. Bright colors are energizing, so turn to them when you want a little inner lift.Dark colors carry a relaxing energy and can be used to ratchet down an overactive mind.Pastels and light tints communicate softness and help soothe the soul.

You probably learned to read or taught your kids to read with the help of e Cat in the Hat (written with only 225 “new-reader” vocabulary words), or
another of the books eodor Geisel (1904-1991) wrote under the pen name of Dr. Seuss. In addition to the iconic Cat and his colorful Hat, he also gave the world Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, How e Grinch Stole Christmas! and more than 40 other books, and his work spawned 11 TV specials, four movies and a Broadway musical.
DR. SEUSSHe called his work “logical insanity” because, “If I
start out with the concept of a two-headed animal, I must put two hats on his head and two toothbrushes in the bathroom.”
But his whimsy also is fi lled with truisms: “A person’s a person no matter how small,” “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” So hold on to your tall, striped hats, because this month Random House will publish What Pet Should I Get?, a new Dr. Seuss book found two years ago in a box of his papers. —Kathleen McCleary

AFTERBEFORE
If you think hair loss only affects
middle-aged men, think again.
It is reported that over 30 million
women in the U.S. have some form
of hair loss and the problem isn’t
going away...
There’s a number of reasons why hair
loss in women is now increasingly
more common: hormone changes,
low iron levels, fad dieting and certain
medications can take their toll. Genes
also play a large role–hair loss can be
inherited. If a woman’s mother has thin
hair then chances are exceedingly
greater for the daughter to suffer
as well. Luckily scientists and
dermatologists have found some
answers to this unfortunate problem.
The suffering is real. “In our culture,
thick beautiful hair is bound up in
notions of womanhood and sexual
attractiveness. Plus, we live in such
an appearance-driven society that our
looks often become one of the largest
factors contributing to our self esteem,”
said leading psychologist Dr. Linda
Papadopoulos. We all have about
100,000 hairs on our head. And
everyday we naturally lose between
50 to 100 strands.
The good news is that effective
treatment for hair loss is easier than
ever to fi nd. You just need to know
where to look.
Over 30 million American women will
experience hair loss in their lifetime.
It’s a devastating and painful experience.
But you can do something about it, if
you act in time.
Many hair regrowth formulas are
intended for men. But be sure to use
only the formulas that are researched
to be effective for women. And as
always, the sooner you do something
about it the better chance you have
at getting luxurious hair.

There is a Settlement in a class action lawsuit fled against Uponor Inc., Wirsbo Company, and Uponor Wirsbo Inc. (“Uponor”) and certain developers/builders, subcontractors, and distributors/suppliers (“Other Defendants”). The lawsuit claims that Uponor’s high zinc content brass plumbing fttings and components are defective and prematurely corrode (or break down). Uponor and the Other Defendants deny these claims and that they did anything wrong.
Who is included in the Settlement?
Generally, you may be included in the Settlement if your home, non-residential property, or the common area of your home or property located in the United States, built in 2002 or later, contains Uponor brand fttings and plumbing components made of high zinc content brass (“Uponor Yellow Brass Fittings”). A separate settlement involving properties in Las Vegas, Nevada has been reached. (Get more info at the website below.)
What does the Settlement provide?
Eligible property owners can get benefts for certain property damage, such as leaks or fow problems. This includes reimbursement for past repairs and repairs that become necessary in the future. The Settlement will also pay (1) the costs of notice and administration, (2) special service awards to the Class Representatives, and (3) attorneys’ fees and costs.
How can I get benefts?
Submit a Claim Form by mail. The timing to fle a claim varies. However,
If You Own or Owned Property That Contains High Zinc Content Brass Plumbing Products
You Could Beneft From a Class Action Lawsuit
For More Information: 1-866-483-0374 www.BrassFittingsClass.com
Legal Notice
if you previously had property damage, you need to fle a claim within six months after the Settlement is approved. For future property damage, you will need to fle a claim within six months after the damage occurs. The amount of any benefts you may receive will depend on the amount and type of included property that you own and the damage you have experienced and/or repairs or replacement needed. The claims period will run for fve years from when the Settlement is approved. Additional details are in the Settlement Agreement available on the website.
What are my rights?
Even if you do nothing, you will be bound by the Court’s decisions. If you want to keep your right to sue Uponor and/or the Other Defendants yourself, you must exclude yourself from the Settlement by August 19, 2015. You will give up the possibility of receiving Settlement benefts, but you will not be bound by the Court’s orders. If you stay in the Settlement, you may object to it by August 19, 2015. Additional details on how to opt out or object are in the Settlement Agreement available on the website.
The Court will hold a hearing on September 8, 2015 to consider whether to approve the Settlement, a request for attorneys’ fees and costs up to $7.5 million, and special service payments of $5,000 per home or homeowners’ association to each of the Class Representatives. You or your own lawyer may appear and speak at the hearing at your own expense.
