Beth Moore | Portraits of Devotion 1

DAY 1Genesis 1:26–2:3

God saw all that He had made, and it was very good (v. 31a).

Can you imagine the fellowship of the Trinity on the seventh day? As they

rested and looked upon the very good work they had accomplished, one planet

had been tended like no other to our knowledge. Perfectly placed in the universe

with adequate distance from sun, moon, and stars to sustain human life, it was

chosen for divine infiltration.“For God loved the world.” Scripture doesn’t tell us He loved the sun, the

most impressive of the heavenly bodies we can see. Nor are we told that He loved

the stars, even though He knows every one of them by name. John goes out of his

way, however, to tell us that God loved the world.

In a universe so vast, so incomprehensible, why does God single out one

little planet to love? Beloved, absorb this into the marrow of your bones: because

we are on it. As despicable as humanity can be, God loves us. Inconceivably, we

are His treasures, His prize creation. He can’t help it. He just loves us. So much,

in fact, that He did something I, with my comparatively pitiful love for my chil-

dren, would not do for anyone. He “gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone

who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 ).

Dear one, let it fall afresh. I myself am overcome with emotion. Elohim is

so huge; we are so small. Yet the vastness of His love—so high, so wide, so deep,

so long—envelops us like the endless universe envelops a crude little planet God

first called Earth. My Amanda was one of the dreamiest, most tenderhearted toddlers you can

imagine. I often stooped down to talk to her so I could look her right in those big

blue-green eyes. Every time I squatted down to talk to her, she squatted down,

urge to laugh. I dared not, because she was often very serious about those con-

templative moments between the two of us.

Of his God, the psalmist wrote, “Your right hand sustains me; you stoop

“Your gentleness and condescension have made me great.” I don’t think the

Scripture applies to us in the modern world’s terms of greatness. I think it says

of us, “You stoop down and make me significant.” Yes, indeed. And when the

God of all the universe stoops down and a single child recognizes the tender

condescension and bends her knee to stoop as well, the heart of God surges with

unbridled emotion. And there they are. Just the two of them.

M A R C H 1

We all do it, probably every day. We have no idea that we’re doing it, yet it has a huge

impact on the way we view ourselves and the way we respond to others. It is one

of the reasons there is so much relational trouble even in the house of God. What

is this thing that we all tend to do that causes so much harm? We all forget. In the

busyness and self-centeredness of our lives, we sadly forget how much our lives have

been blessed by and radically redirected by mercy. The fact that God has blessed

us with his favor when we deserved his wrath fades from our memories like a song

whose lyrics we once knew but now cannot recall. The reality that on every morning

brand-new mercy greets us is not the thing that grips our minds as we frenetically

prepare for our day. When we lay our exhausted heads down at the end of the day

for much-needed sleep, we often fail to look back on the many mercies that dripped

from God’s hands onto our little lives. We don’t often take time to sit and meditate

on what our lives would’ve been like if the mercy of the Redeemer had not been

written into our personal stories. Sadly, we all tend to be way too mercy-forgetful.

Mercy-forgetfulness is dangerous, because it shapes the way you think about

yourself and others. When you remember mercy, you also remember that you simply

did nothing whatsoever to earn that with which mercy has blessed you. When you

remember mercy, you are humble, thankful, and tender. When you remember mercy,

complaining gives way to gratitude and self-focused desire gives way to worship. But

when you forget mercy, you proudly tell yourself that what you have is what you’ve

achieved. When you forget mercy, you take credit for what only mercy could produce.

When you forget mercy, you name yourself as righteous and deserving, and you live

an entitled and demanding life. When you forget mercy and think you’re deserving, you find it all too easy not

to extend mercy to others. Proudly, you think that you’re getting what you deserve

and that they are, too. Your proud heart is not tender, so it is not easily moved by

the sorry plight of others. You forget that you are more like than unlike your needy

brother, failing to acknowledge that neither of you stands before God as deserving.

Humility is the soil in which mercy for others grows. Gratitude for mercy given is

what motivates mercy extended. Paul says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,

forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Eph. 4:32).For further study and encouragement: Luke 6:27–36; Matthew 18:21–35

DEVOTION

Perfect Peace

What does “perfect peace” look like to you? Many people believe

the false idea that peace is the absence of trouble, conflict, or

anxiety in their lives. They think that in order to feel content, calm,

and relaxed, everything must go according to schedule, smoothly

following their own plans and expectations.

Life doesn’t work this way, though, and neither does peace. Just

as your body can be healthy even when you’re hungry, hot, cold, or

tired, you can experience peace in your life regardless of life’s circum-

stances. When you focus on loving the Lord and serving others out of

this love, you can know peace no matter what else happens today.

This kind of calm center remains unruffled by the winds of change

and storms of unexpected trouble. This kind of peace provides a

permanent shelter against anything you face today.

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast,

because he trusts in you.

Isaiah 26:3

March 1

If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court. I would lay out

my case and present my arguments. Then I would listen to his reply and

understand what he says to me.

Job 23:3-5

Even though God loves to speak to His people, He sometimes maintains long

silences and lets us search for Him. That can be an uncomfortable process,

especially during life’s painful seasons, but it has profound results. Somehow in

the search, His distance draws us closer. Some people may give up and lose the

benefit of the silence, but those who keep pressing in will reap rewards for their

persistence. They will learn to depend on the God they cannot hear, cannot see,

and cannot sense in any other way. His most recent words will continue to echo

in their souls, forcing their hearts to choose between faith and fear, between

assurance and uncertainty, between hope and despair.

Were those words real? Another voice will whisper to us that they weren’ t—

that our imagination was misleading us. But the heart of the believer will actu-

ally believe. God has spoken before, and yes, He will speak again.

God’s silences are as much an aspect of His communication as His voice is.

They test our mettle and teach us to listen more attentively. We refine our hear-

ing and our faith when He doesn’t speak as He once did. When we ask Him

questions and hear nothing but silence, as Job did, the appropriate response isn’t

to walk away. It’s to draw nearer. We can be encouraged by moments of distance;

it means He wants us to come closer.

When you don’t hear God, don’t get impatient or give up. Know that He is

drawing you nearer, tuning your ears to His voice and teaching you the fine art

of waiting for Him. The silence won’t last forever. The rewards of persistence

will.

G G G

Lord, when I can’t sense Your presence or hear Your voice, please keep

drawing me toward You. Give me the patience and persistence to keep seeking

Your face.

Many interpreters place John’s baptismal ministry at a point on the middle reaches of the Jordan River, where trade routes converge at a natural ford not far from the modern site of Tel Shalem.

Events surrounding Jesus’ baptism reveal the intense religious excitement and social ferment of the early days of John the Baptist’s ministry. Herod had been cruel and rapacious; Roman military occupation was harsh. Some agitation centered around the change of governors from Gratus to Pilate in AD 26. Most of the people hoped for a religious solution to their intolerable political situation, and when they heard of a new prophet, they flocked out into the desert to hear him. The religious sect (Essenes) from Qumran professed similar doctrines of repentance and baptism. Jesus was baptized at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan (see Jn 1:28). John also baptized at “Aenon near Salim” (Jn 3:23).

For Jesus’ temptation, see notes on Mt 4:1–11; Lk 4:1–13.

13:14 The tribe of Levi inherited no tribal land of its own (see Deut 18:1-8). Levitical cities were located in the ter-ritories of the other tribes (ch 21).13:15-23 Because Reuben, Jacob’s fi rstborn son by Leah (Gen 29:32), forfeited his birthright by sleeping with his father’s concubine (Gen 35:22), the inheritance of his tribe was not of central importance. Although the tribe received a fertile portion of land, it was diffi cult to defend from neighboring nations. The tribe of Reuben eventually lost the southern portion to Moab.13:21 The leaders of Midian were apparently kings (Num 31:8) or sheiks of small city-states south of Sihon’s kingdom. The nomadic Midianites depended mostly on sheep and goats for their livelihood.13:22 Balaam son of Beor had initiated a successful plan to seduce Israel into sexually expressed idolatry (Num 31:16), even though God had forbidden Balaam to curse Israel (Num 22–25).13:24-28 Gad was Jacob’s seventh son, born to Zilpah, Leah’s servant. Just as Gad’s position in his family was periph-eral, the tribe of Gad was peripheral to Israel.

After Joshua and the Israelites had conquered the hill country, the land was divided among the twelve tribes, as shown. Much of this land remained unconquered, however (see map, p. 416), and the tribe of DAN later moved to a completely different area (19:47; Judg 18).

flowed down the center of the main street. On

each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing

twelve crops of fruit,* with a fresh crop each

month. The leaves were used for medicine to

heal the nations.3

No longer will there be a curse upon any-

thing. For the throne of God and of the Lamb

will be there, and his servants will worship

him. 4  And they will see his face, and his

name will be written on their foreheads. 5  And

there will be no night there— no need for lamps

or sun— for the Lord God will shine on them.

And they will reign forever and ever.

6 Then the angel said to me, “Everything you

have heard and seen is trustworthy and true.

The Lord God, who inspires his prophets,* has

sent his angel to tell his servants what will

happen soon.*”

Jesus Is ComIng7

“Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are

those who obey the words of prophecy

written in this book.*”

8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw

all these things. And when I heard and saw

them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the

angel who showed them to me. 9  But he said,

“No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God,

just like you and your brothers the prophets,

as well as all who obey what is written in this

book. Worship only God!”10

Then he instructed me, “Do not seal up the

prophetic words in this book, for the time is

near. 11  Let the one who is doing harm continue

to do harm; let the one who is vile continue to

be vile; let the one who is righteous continue

to live righteously; let the one who is holy con-

tinue to be holy.”

12 “Look, I am coming soon, bringing

my reward with me to repay all people

according to their deeds. 13  I am the Alpha

and the Omega, the First and the Last, the

Beginning and the End.”

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes.

They will be permitted to enter through the

gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of

life. 15  Outside the city are the dogs— the sorcer-

ers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the

idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you

this message for the churches. I am both

the source of David and the heir to his

throne.* I am the bright morning star.”

17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let

anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let any-

one who is thirsty come. Let anyone who de-

sires drink freely from the water of life. 18  And

I solemnly declare to every one who hears the

words of prophecy written in this book: If any-

one adds anything to what is written here, God

will add to that person the plagues described in

this book. 19  And if anyone removes any of the

words from this book of prophecy, God will re-

move that person’s share in the tree of life and

in the holy city that are described in this book.

20 He who is the faithful witness to all these

things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!”

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!21

May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with

God’s holy people.*

Jesus Is ComIng

As the Christian church grew, so did opposition to the new Christian beliefs and

their new way of living. The persecuted churches needed hope to persevere. The

vision God gave to the apostle John provided great comfort for the early church,

and it has continued to do so for the church through the centuries. That story of

God’s hope continues today. The big story that started at the beginning of time

is not over yet. God will reveal himself in Christ the conquering King, and he will

unite himself with his followers for all time.

22:2 Or twelve kinds of fruit. 22:6a Or The Lord, the God of the

spirits of the prophets. 22:6b Or suddenly, or quickly; also in 22:7,

12, 20. 22:7 Or scroll; also in 22:9, 10, 18, 19. 22:16 Greek I am

the root and offspring of David. 22:21 Other manuscripts read

be with all; still others read be with all of God’s holy people. Some

manuscripts add Amen.

Adam loved her in an instant. She was as much a part of him then as his very rib had been. Life together was barefoot and perfect, every moment a gift from the Giver. God saw them running, jumping, laugh-ing, and full of His breath. It was just the way God wanted it to be.

They were free to live in His amazing creation and could enjoy anything around them.

With one exception . . . God told them not to eat the fruit from one specific tree in the

garden, and He warned them that if they disobeyed there would be terrible consequences.

She was made for him, no question.Where there was once a rib in Adam’s chest, there was now

a scar reminding them both of the way God had made her. You see, God didn’t want Adam to live all alone, so He took a part

from Adam and shaped and molded it into the very first bride the world had known: Eve.
