It is sadly unsurprising that PrimeMinister Cameronrsquos highly publicizedtrip to Turkey went with no mentionof that countryrsquos continued denial ofthe Armenian Genocide and itssuppression of Kurdish and Armenianminorities Indeed when Turkishleader Erdogan discussed his threatsof ethnically cleansing Armenians inthe UK Gordon Brown made nomore comment on the matter than ifErdogan had been discussing hisfavorite television programs It is in keeping with that conspiracyof silence that Cameron made nomention of the thousands of politicalprisoners in Turkish jails there oftenfor merely expressing an opinion atodds with the state for singing a folksong or delivering an official speechin Kurdish Naturally Cameron didnot think to raise the issue of LeylaZana the first Kurdish womanelected to the Turkish parliament anda winner of the Sakharov Prize whois still in jail today Cameron couldhave at least raised the subject ofAysel Tuluk a member of theTurkish Human Rights Associationwho was illegally stripped of herparliamentary immunity and sent tojail for handing out leaflets in theKurdish language and is now due tobe sent to jail yet again But rather than standing up forhuman rights Cameron insteadpandered to the radical Islamists whowere his hosts by feeding theirappetite for hate directed at IsraelAnd it did not begin or end withIsrael Instead Cameron sold out the rest ofEurope declaring that he was ldquoangryrdquoat how long the negotiations to bringTurkey into the EU were taking anddeclaring himself the ldquostrongestp o s s i b l e a d v o c a t e f o r E Umembershiprdquo He slammed Franceand implicitly Germany for refusingto rush forward to support bringingTurkey into the EU Cameron sidedwith Turkey over France andGermany betraying al l ies forenemies And worse was yet to come Not only did Cameron ignoreTurkeyrsquos ongoing occupation ofCyprus but he signed a strategicagreement with Turkey that calls forending the ldquoisolationrdquo of the TurkishCypriots by upholding their ldquoright torepresentationrdquo in the EuropeanParliament and promoting politicaland cultural contacts with the TurkishCypriots What that means is thatCameron committed himself tosupporting Dervis Eroglu from theradical National Unity Party whichcalls for Turkish annexation ofoccupied Cyprus The strategicagreement signed by Cameronmoves the UK closer to recognizing
