Illustrious Sir Robert S. “Bob” Whitmarsh, Potentate

TRAVELFORKIDS

Since my last message Doreen and I have been to many Shrine functions, includingthe Potentates Ball, Special Ladies Lunch, the Spring Ceremonial and the ImperialSession in Anaheim, CA.

Our Potentate’s Ball was a wonderful weekend and we owe a debt of gratitude toChief Rabban, Brian Davenport and his Lady Johanna for making it such a success. The460 people who attended were treated to a superb meal complimented with wonderfuldecorations. Thank you, Brian and Johanna, and please also convey my thanks to yourteam for making it such a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend for my family and friends.Everyone enjoyed every minute of the festivities.

To all the Special Ladies, I cannot thank you enough for attending the luncheon onMay 27th. You Ladies play a big part in our Fraternity and this day is but one way ofrepaying you for all the things you do for the Shrine. Thank you, Noble Don Dyson andLady Gloria for chairing this event again. With the assistance of the Appointed Divan itwas job well done.

Before we could blink an eye, the Spring Ceremonial in Kingston was upon us. Specialguest, Katie Walker, a Shrine patient from California flew in to Toronto June 3rdaccompanied by her parents and brother. This visit has been in the works for months andwith the help of Gene Kerrigan, our Marshall and Floyd Sales, Special Aide, the Walkerswere through customs and ready to board the Newbeaver Train. The Provost thenproceeded to escort the train to our home where a pot luck supper was awaiting theirarrival. Some 60 Newbeaver Shriners and their Ladies were there to greet Katie and herfamily. I can report that they were a little excited, to say the least. I can’t thank theRameses Provost Marshals and the Newbeaver Shrine Club enough for this very specialride for Katie. Monday and Tuesday were busy days as we went to Welland PortColbourne fish fry and the Parliament Buildings the next day. I thank John Mitchell forarranging the day at the Parliament Buildings for the Walkers. On Wednesday June 6thwe were off to Kingston for the long awaited Spring Ceremonial. I feel that after manyyears of planning it was a great success. There were 87 candidates initiated into theShrine. To these new Nobles please join a Club or Unit of your choice and becomeinvolved in our wonderful work. To the Ceremonial Committee, under the direction ofEric Welbanks and Lady Linda, thank you, thank you, for all the hours you and themembers of the Kingston and District Shrine Club put into making this weekend such amemorial event.

Then came the Imperial Session in Anaheim, California which was well attended. Ithank, with a deep gratitude, the Founders Unit for the effort made in bringing not onlytheir Street Car but allowing me to ship a rickshaw with them. Due to unforeseencircumstances beyond our control the chariot was not able to be taken to Anaheim. Therickshaw from my mother Club El Shamaly was my mode of transportation in the paradewith the able assistance of Noble Dale Plant, my puller. My many thanks to Past PotentateBevan Carrique and Noble Clarence Bytheway for drumming and to all the Nobility whomarched.

I wish to thank everyone for their support at all these functions and a special thankyou to Press Corps Director, Michael Parkes for attending all of the above functions totake pictures for all to enjoy on the Website and in the Papyrus.

I hope everyone had a good summer and are ready to get back into the groove againas we TRAVEL FOR KIDS.

BY BOB MCGREGOR, P.P.Recorder

Recorder’sMessage

Nobles, we recently requested that all Clubs andTemple Units that intend to run a Fundraiserrequest permission on the proper form which is

contained in the procedure book that is in thepossession of all Secretaries. The form is headedApplication For Approval of Fundraising Activity/Event.

There are a few simple questions that need to beanswered by putting a check mark in whatever boxapplies, then it should be signed by the Chairman of theevent and approved by the Club President, whosesignature is the most important, for without that, wedon’t know that the function in question has his or theexecutive approval. Yes, sometimes Club Units decide togo for it on their own and it’s not the first time a ClubPresident has called the office to find out what’shappening in his Club.

The recent criticism of the Shrine by the newspapersmakes the above modus operandi an absolute must andI’m sorry if you feel we are being picky, but sincerelyNobles, we don’t have a choice.

Finally, if your fundraising ticket, flyer or promotionalpaperwork uses the words Hospital or Kids, it’s aCharitable Fundraiser. NO EXCEPTIONS.

I thank you for your support and understanding. Let’sall just keep doing it right, that way we can all sleepsoundly each night.

The Spring Ceremonial for 2007 is only just a happymemory now but from our point of view it was a verysuccessful venture with 87 candidates on Rameses booksnow as full fledged Shriners. We welcome every one ofyou and trust that by now you are having fun as a ShrineMason.

The Kingston District Shrine Club did a superb job ofhosting this event and my thanks to every one of you foryour dedicated support of Rameses. I hesitate to usenames for fear I should forget someone, however I willmention Noble Ambassador Emeritus Eric Welbanks whoserved as Director General and is directly responsible forthe success of this project. A great job Noble Eric and abig thank you to you and your team of dedicated Noblesand Ladies.

It won’t be long before we start into the elections for2008 and I wish to remind you all of an offer we madeto all Units and Clubs in 2006, that if you wished we

would do both the election and installation of your Unitor Club at the same time. The advantages are only onetrip for everyone. Usually in very bad weather, obviouslya substantial cost saving for both Temple and Club, officers elect automatically take office the minute thenew Illustrious Potentate is installed on January 5th,2008. The first time we did this, only two Clubs optedfor this idea; however, we presently have quite a fewUnits and Clubs requesting this for the coming electionnight. If your Club or Unit wishes to do it this way, please call me as soon as possible so I can set up aworking schedule. This is not a must. It’s an option andit’s your choice, however it does make a lot of sense andwe will still make that extra visit to you, but in the goodweather.

The Imperial Session in Anaheim California wasreasonably well attended and I thank everyone whoshowed support for Rameses. The Legislation was fairlyroutine and no one was surprised by the end result. Onesection that was of interest to us was Resolution 11 onthe call. This was, of course, another try at getting theCanadian Shrine Hospital moved to London, Ontarioafter which the Montreal Hospital would be closed.

Let me say for the record that I would like to see thishappen and I supported this move in 2005 in Baltimorewith passion and due diligence, regrettably it failed and Idecided then that the kids in our care were much moreimportant than the location of the hospital and I made aconscious decision to put the loss behind me andconcentrate on repairing broken bodies.

The decision reached in Anaheim was so predictablethat I was surprised that so much time was wasted on itand it should be pointed out that Rameses was notincluded in the drive to relocate, this was solely a MochaShrine resolution and like all other Canadian Temples, wewere privy only to the rumors until one week before wewent to Anaheim.

The motion was presented and with 1095 votingmembers present, the result was as follows; 265 for themove, 830 against and if that’s not bad enough, themotion required a two thirds majority to pass. As youcan see, this is not going to happen anytime soon solet’s put it behind us and move on. I think it’s fair to saythat the Potentate of Philae Temple in Nova Scotia whospoke against the move, carried the day. He wasdynamic in his presentation and had the representativesin the palm of his hand from the first statement out ofhis mouth.

By the time you read this, it will be September andthe fall activities will be well underway and as we bendto the task of our Shrine duties, let us all keep a fewsimple resolutions in mind.

1. Meetings must be businesslike but enjoyable. Funand good fellowship should be at the top of your list.

2. Membership is the lifeblood of our organization

On Friday May 4, 2007 at 8:00 AM, forty-twoNobles and Ladies from Credit Valley, Guelphand Leaside Shrine Clubs boarded a bus at the

Credit Valley Temple in Georgetown for a weekend tripto visit our Children’s Shrine Hospital in Springfield,Massachusetts.

On the bus trip to Springfield everyone wasentertained with a selection of great movies andchallenging quizzes to pass the time. There was notrouble crossing the border either going or on thereturn trip Sunday afternoon, as nobody over-spent hisor her travel allowance. The Oasis did a steady businessboth ways, as well as the hospitality room on the Fridayand Saturday nights.

On Saturday morning we boarded the bus for theshort trip to the Springfield Shrine Hospital. Themembers of the Melha Shrine Director’s Staff greeted uswith great enthusiasm and they did a magnificent jobbeing our hospital tour guides.

Firstly, Mr. Mark Niederpruem, the HospitalAdministrator, gave a brief overview of the SpringfieldHospital in the Conference Room and showed a shortfilm about the Hospital’s history, the building of thecurrent facility and the procedures and treatments thatare administered to our children.

The Nobles and Ladies were then broken into smallergroups and given a guided tour by the Nobles fromMelha Shrine, followed by a delicious lunch in thecafeteria. After lunch, the group presented a chequefor US$500 to the Hospital on behalf of the Nobles andLadies from Rameses.

After Lunch, Noble Al “Poppie” Surpenant and hislovely wife gave us a bus tour of Springfield,Massachusetts. The tour ended at the Melha ShrineTemple where a fundraising auction sale had justfinished. This did not stop some of the Ladies frompurchasing some special treasures that did not sell inthe auction. Members of Melha Temple took a numberof the group on a tour of the facilities while thebalance of the group stayed back and enjoyed theMelha Oasis.

After returning to the hotel to drop off those thatdid not want to go shopping, the bus proceeded to theshopping centre for the balance of the afternoon. Those that stayed at the hotel enjoyed an afternoon offellowship in the Hospitality Room.

A delicious group dinner was planned on theSaturday evening in a private room at a local restaurantand the evening ended back at the hotel in theHospitality Room.

Before we departed the parking lot at the CreditValley Temple, a decision was made to visit our ChicagoShrine Hospital on the first weekend in May 2008.

The spectacular Spring Ceremonial of the Rameses Shrine took placein Kingston, Ontario, during 7-10 June 2007. Nobles and theirLadies enjoyed the historic setting of Kingston, the surrounding

add some pageantry to the proceedings. The Flea Market is alwayspopular with lots of good merchandise on parade. Original weaponsstand ready to defend Canada, “not sure how we load these things!”The grand parade into Fort Henry. This Noble gets to be kissed by a lotof people, on the right from the last edition of Papyrus (check out thecompetition) and on the left by his lovely Lady. The Ladies program waswell attended. OSHAWA SHRINE CLUB

Kingston was a great choice byIllustrious Sir, Noble RobertWhitmarsh, to host the Spring

Ceremonial. The city is steeped inhistory and located in a greatsetting, nestled by Lake Ontario.Oshawa Club was out in force withalmost two hundred Shriners andtheir ladies enjoying the city, thegreat parade and the shopping.

Of course everyone trooped off toenjoy the Oriental Band at FortHenry on the Friday.

Within days, Oshawa werepartying it up at the annual ClownsBBQ, enjoying a sunny afternoonunder the tent at the Shrine Clubproperty.

Still to come is the OshawaCircus, a giant parade in Lindsey, theMini Bikes annual Corn Roast andthe Oshawa Hospital Gala.

We were especially pleased towatch ourselves on Rogers Televisionwhich replayed our Units in actionduring the Oshawa Fiesta Parade, which attracts thousands of peopleevery summer.

Even though our Club is large interms of membership, the morale isexcellent and many of our Shrinersand their ladies consider it asanother happy family.

Until our next issue, keep smilingand remember, bad breath is muchbetter than no breath at all.

Chief Rabban

Hopefully by now everyone knows what transpiredin Kingston, Ontario by reading the other DivanArticles in this issue of the Papyrus, and of course,

by having been there. So all I have to say iscongratulations to The Kingston Shrine Club for amemorable weekend and a job well done.

Now, moving on to the Imperial Session in Anaheim,California: it is my understanding that this year’s ImperialParade was the shortest ever! Maybe, the distance wasthe problem, eh? However, Rameses was wellrepresented and our Shrine Centre does not take a backseat to anyone. Thanks Nobles and Ladies for beingthere and proudly showing our maple leaf flags.

The business portions of the 133rd. Imperial Sessionwere pretty boring. The same legislation we seem to doevery year, except that Mocha Shriners revisited therelocation of the Canadian hospital to London fromOntario. Needless to say, their proposal went over like alead balloon, 830 votes to stay in Montreal and 265votes to London. The Nobles of the Shrine of NorthAmerica have spoken. I see this as “The End”, at least inmy life time! Maybe!

One exciting trip that I would like to tell you about isan official visitation. Wor. Bro. Floyd Sales, Master ofTuscon Lodge # 99 and a Rameses Special Aide, and V.Wor. Bro. Don Emerson, Secretary of the Viking ShrineClub along with R. W. Bro. Bruce Dickson, P.D.D.G.M.(who is not a Shriner, so Viking S.C. members get youroars in the water, we need members like Bruce to join). While others drove, Floyd and I traveled to TemiskamingShores (a.k.a. New Liskeard) by motorcycles, it was agreat ride. Later that night, we all drove to Elk Lake forthe official visit of the District Deputy Grand Master toElk Lake Lodge # 507 G.R.C. Nipissing East District. Many of the Brethren in the north belong to two ormore Lodges, and must travel great distances to attendLodge.

Some of those Lodges have not had a Candidate inyears but their Lodge work and enthusiasm have notdiminished.

Note: We in the south could learn from our northernbrethren. We were treated royally and welcomed toreturn.

After Lodge, the locals warned us about our driveback to New Liskeard. They said that there would be alot of moose on the road and that we should driveslowly and carefully. We were careful, but we didn’t seeany deer or moose not even a sign of moose droppings!Maybe the locals were having some fun with us butmore than likely they were concerned for our safety. Itwas probably the furthest I’ve ever traveled for an officialvisit (1,250 kilometers return). If you ever have theopportunity to travel to a northern Lodge, make theeffort, I assure you, you will be welcomed.

In closing, come celebrate 2008 Rameses SpringCeremonial in Brampton, Ontario on June 5-8.

Gosh, as the summer moves along I’m always sopleased to see you Nobles at all the differentfunctions I attend.

The Spring Ceremonial and the Imperial Sessions arenow over and they were great successes. Lori and Ienjoyed them both and I was very proud to be one offour of your voting representatives of Rameses at theImperial Sessions in Anaheim, California.

Still the most worrisome part is our decliningmembership. Yes we brought in 87 new Shriners atKingston but we must do better.

I’d like to congratulate and welcome the new Noblesinto Rameses and I hope you get involved in the manyactivities at the Club and Unit level. Nobles, please makethem welcome they are our future.

As the fall moves in I’d like to remind you of ourannual Rameses Shrine Football Classic. The game willbe at Varsity Stadium in Toronto on 20 October 2007 at1:00 pm. The game will feature the University of Toronto

Varsity Blues vs. Queens University Golden Gaels. TheStadium holds 5,000 people so if you can, come out andsupport this worthwhile function.

In closing, I hope you all had a great summer withyour friends and families and I’m looking forward toseeing you soon.

Thanks for allowing me to serve you.

Noble Claude Saunders passedaway during the first week ofMay 2007, in his 96th year. A

dedicated Shriner and member ofour Oriental Band, Claude continuedto participate fully in all ouractivities, up until his 93rd year. Atthat time, unfortunately, he wasforced to seek assisted livingaccommodations due to poor health.

A giant of a man, hisaccomplishments were legendary, having been awarded Canada’shighest honour, The Order ofCanada and obtaining a berth inCanada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Hewas recognized as a progressive andomnipotent presence in Canadianrowing, and represented Canada inthe men’s heavy eights during boththe 1936 and 1948 Olympics. Duringthe 1936 games in Berlin, theGerman Chancellor, Adolph Hitler, shook his hand as he stepped out ofthe Canadian boat.

He brought that same kind ofattention and passion to his job atStelco, where he made importantimprovements in workplace safety.Indeed, their company slogan couldwell be, “Our product is steel butour strength is Shriners”, based ondedicated employees like Claude and

and we must all give this item our close attention.Rameses is now down to 4,600 members.

3. If you haven’t paid your dues, please do so now. There are approximately 600 Rameses Nobles that havenot paid and the time and expense of chasing this downis an unfair burden that the rest of us have to carry.

Remember, if you have a problem, out of work, onhard times; call me so I can spring into action. Beingshort of cash is not a crime. I think most of us have beenthere at some time in our life. Come on Nobles, eithersend us a cheque, give us your Visa payment or call me.It’s that simple and yes, our conversation is strictlyconfidential.

Our office at 3100 Keele Street has been open allsummer long and we have been busy on many projectswhile our Clubs and Units are at rest. We have made allkinds of repairs to our equipment, carpets have beencleaned, floors stripped and polished, chairs and tablesrepaired, a spot of paint here and there and a host ofother items that our 37,000 square foot buildingrequires to keep it in good shape. We update our filesand spend a fair amount of time on the 2008budget.Yes, Nobles, it’s still a busy time at 3100 KeeleStreet but we love it.

I appreciate all that you do for Rameses throughoutthe year and I don’t take your effort for granted. I knowthat it’s a labour of love and I thank you all for just beingShriners.

Alot has happened over the last couple of months,so where does a person start. First I would like tocongratulate all our new Nobles who crossed the

Burning Sands in Kingston. I hope that the SpringCeremonial 2007 was an exciting time and was enjoyedby you and your lady. Having one of our Shrine Kids, inthe person of Miss Katie Walker with us should havemade it a memorable occasion for you. I wouldencourage each of you to become active in one of theClubs or in one of the Temple Units. This is where youwill find fun and fellowship and each of you will learnwhat the Shrine is all about. “Having Fun, so Kids Can.”I would also encourage each of you not to be shy aboutbeing part of the activities of your Temple. There are lotsof social events I am sure that you and your lady willenjoy.

Next, just a word or two about the 2007 ImperialSession. As this was my first Imperial Session as amember of the Divan, I attended all the businesssessions, election and installation of the Officers as wellmarched in the Parade. What a warm day! I found it wasa very busy time and I learned much about the workingof our Imperial Council which I had not seen before.

As I am the Shrine Hospital Patient CommitteeDirector this year I would like to give you a brief reportof what has been happening in this area. At present,Rameses Shriners have a total of 532 active cases in our

system and in the last month there has been a total of41 appointments scheduled, 27 to our Canadian Unit inMontreal and 14 to the Erie Unit. From January 6th2007 until July 10th 2007 there have been a total of206 visits. As you can see there has been quite a bit ofactivity in the first 6 months of this year. It is yourdonations to the Transportation Fund that look after allthe expenses of getting our Shrine Kids to these Hospitalvisits. A big thanks to all the Clubs and Units who havecontributed to the Transportation Fund this year.

I would also like to personally congratulate all ourmembers who were elected to Grand Lodge Officeduring the 152nd communication of Grand Lodge. Mysincere best wishes to you for a successful term of office.

Best wishes for safe and happy travels, andremember, Shriners do it Best.

Nobles, we are into our summer season, ImperialSessions are over and we enjoyed the fine weatherin California. The parade was short and quiet as it

was held during the workday. Our Canadian Ladies wereonce again appreciated by the marchers.

Effective September 1, 2007 the reinstatement feewill be $150.

Our expenses keep going up and our income down. This also affects the running of Rameses Building. Iwould like you to consider directing some of your fundsto the upkeep so that you have a place to be proud ofand to show off to your friends. We are very lucky toown such a fine home.

To our Nobles and families, we hope that you keepwell and to those who are distressed we wish you well.

CREDIT VALLEY SHRINE CLUB

The Noble Riders Unit of the Credit ValleyShrine Club, lead by our acting Club PresidentNoble George Prior, celebrated Canada Day

in the annual Glen Williams parade. The parade route winds down Main Street into

the Town and crosses over the bridge at the CreditRiver.

A large number of the residents and visitors, standing four and five rows deep in many places, line the streets for Canada’s birthday celebration.

Nearly all of the houses in the Town aredecorated with Canadian flags and a number ofresidents along the parade route provide waterand lemonade to the participants.

This is a fun day for everyone.

OAKVILLE SHRINE CLUB

Earlier this year the Black Camel took one of ourmost devoted and dedicated Shriners, Noble ArnoldFish. Members will always remember him riding one

of his beautiful horses at the head of the band in manyparades; his ever gracious wife Ruth; the annual cornroasts at their farm; and his quiet sincerity to Shrinedom.Noble Arnold will be sadly missed.

On a happier note, at our annual Past Presidents’Night we honoured Noble Harry Troughton for his longservice and dedication to the Oakville Club. He and hisgood Lady Dorothy were presented with an oil painting.

Throughout the year, Club members and their goodladies attended several social gatherings. In May we triedour skills with chopsticks at the Mandarin restaurant. InJune, courtesy of Noble Bill Bradley, we had our annualBBQ at the Oakville Power Boat Club, and August found

WAUBUNO SHRINE CLUB

Hello everyone, well, have we been busy this spring! At our April dinner meeting we were honoured byhaving 24 guests participate, 22 of whom were

non-Shriners. Ill. Sir Bob Whitmarsh honoured us with asurprise visit and brought Oriental Guide Brian Lawsonwith him. Ill Sir had heard we had dedicated the eveningto our non-Shriner volunteers. We invited 30 volunteerswho regularly attend our functions and give a helpinghand wherever they’re needed. At the dinner wepresented Million Dollar Certificates to 10 volunteerswho have participated for more than 5 years, and afurther Certificate, a Commemorative Stamp and a ClubJacket to an individual who has participated, as avolunteer at our events for 30 consecutive years. (Hesays he hasn’t time to get involved with our Club as amember, but I challenge you to find members who haveparticipated at all your events for 30 years). We are truly

us at the home of Noble Marz Byramjee and his LadyKermin for our annual corn roast.

The “Welcome Mat” is always out to any Shriner tojoin us at our monthly dinner meeting on the thirdWednesday of each month. Just give Noble Ron Bothamcall so arrangements can be made.

“No time to get involved”, he gives 30 years to Shrineappreciative and proud of the accomplishment of Mr.Peter Anderson.

The following evening found us upstairs at Lodge, where a Waubuno Shrine Club 3rd Degree teamassembled and raised 3 brothers to the degree of MasterMason. I’m sure the three new Master Masons will notforget the evening or the fellowship provided by theteam, nor will the Team forget them. Well done all!

Several of us managed to make it down to KeeleStreet for the Potentates Ball, and it was an impressiveaffair. The Ball Room was well turned out, as were theShriners and their Ladies. The meal was fantastic. I can’timpress on our Nobles enough how well served and howwell received we are at Temple. If you haven’t been ableto attend an event at Temple, you really owe it toyourself to participate. Believe me, you will not bedisappointed.

Spring Ceremonial was a Parry Hoot! Congratulationsto the Kingston Shrine Club for a well run event.

BY NOBLE BEVIN J.M. CARRIQUE P.P.PIPE BAND, DIRECTOR

The Pipe Band has had a busysummer participating in theSpring Ceremonial and different

parades. Of special note, Clarenceand I played for the Nobles in theImperial parade.

As president of S.C.O.T.S., theImperial Pipe Band Association, itwas a pleasure to have some of themembers joining us in the parade. Iwas re-elected as 2nd Vice-Presidentand will be the President in 2010.

Rameses Pipe Band is regrettablylosing our Pipe Major, Noble CharlesKennedy has decided to move onand on behalf of the band we wishhim well and thank him for his yearsof service. Our new pipe major isNoble Ed Forsyth.

The Pipe Band would like towelcome our New Nobles into theRameses Shrine and should you belooking for a Unit to join, the PipeBand meet every Monday night atthe Shrine Temple on Keele Street.

If you would like to learn thepipes or drums, we will be morethan happy to teach you. Pleasecome join us. You can call me at705-721-7297 for more information.

In my February report, I talked about physician shortages and I have to reportthe situation has not improved.

Dr. Peter Armstrong our Chief Medical Officer in Tampa has reported that asat the end of the 1st quarter our current vacancy list for full and part timepositions is as follows:

Erie -2 Pediatric Orthopaedic SurgeonsTampa -2 Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons

-1 AnesthesiologistHouston -1 Pediatric Orthopaedic SurgeonPhiladelphia -2.5 Pediatric Orthopaedic SurgeonsN. California -2 Pediatric Orthopaedic SurgeonsShreveport -1 Pediatric Orthopaedic SurgeonDr. Armstrong is aware of another 3-5 of our physicians that are currently

being actively recruited.Imp. Sir Ralph Semb Chairman of the Board of Trustees reported last month:

“The Joint Boards adopted the Strategic Plan that the committee was workingon for the past year. It was a giant task and we will now ask that the hospitalsdevelop their own strategic plan based upon the new system strategies, visionand values.

We have also adopted a “Vision Statement” and two new core values:Shriners Hospitals for Children will be the unquestioned leader, nationally and

internationally, in caring for children and advancing the field in its specialty areas.(The vision states SHC’s aspirations for the future and sets high-level direction forthe organization)

The following two core values, Innovation and Stewardship, wereincorporated to better support the emerging vision.

Innovation: Continuously seek to improve the services we provide and be aleader in specialty pediatric health care.

Stewardship: Responsibly manage and apply our resources to maximize thebenefit to our patients, their families, employees, fraternity members, anddonors.”

So what does all of this mean to SHC Erie? The facts are that the two young surgeons we lost in the past year went to

University of Alabama Medical Center and to Loma Linda Medical Center inCalifornia. These are children’s hospitals with all of the infrastructure likePediatric Intensive Care Units, subspecialties like pediatric anesthesiologists, neurologists, urologists etc. in house and all of the latest digital imaging anddiagnostic equipment.

Lack of advanced pediatric care in Erie is by far the most crucial issue facingour hospital.

Following our discussions with the local hospitals, it is clear that our Eriehospital must partner with one or more of the regional children’s hospitals toprovide the necessary infrastructure.

The Erie Board of Governors approved this initiative and discussion willcommence immediately with the following hospitals:

a. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMCb. Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitalc. Cleveland Clinicd. Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo

Of course, all of the activities require the approval of the Joint Boards andmust be consistent with the current Strategic Plan.

We would expect the Erie hospital to continue as an excellent rehabilitationcentre doing clinics and minor outpatient surgeries.

Certainly all of your support and encouragement is appreciated in thesesomewhat difficult times.
