The most undeniably modern homes in Dallas can now be found in one place. Dallas Modern, releasing mid-September, features more than 250 stunning interior and exterior photos of 20 of the most spectacular homes in the city. Depicted as a dynamic metropolis with a sophisticated world of fi ne residences, Dallas is beautifully painted as a leader in modern architecture and design. Numerous internationally distinguished architects have created masterpieces in Dallas, including Philip Johnson, Edward Durell Stone, Edward Larrabee Barnes and
Richard Meier (of Rachofsky House renown). Also highlighted in the monograph’s pages are homes by esteemed Dallas architects Howard Meyer (designer of the Nakoma Residence
for prominent Zales businessman Ben Lipshy) and Bud Oglesby, who designed Nancy Lemmon’s Highland Park abode. For those intrigued by the evolution of design, the homes are chronologically presented in their own chapters and range from a carefully restored Modernist house to those completed within the past four years. Each embraces modern Dallas living at its fullest, from sleek glass outdoor living spaces and magnifi cent archways to fl oor-to-ceiling paintings and a dining room encircled by a crystal-clear blue moat. For architecture, design and landscape inspiration from some of the most exemplary homes in the area, purchase the book ($60) at the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center or through dallasarchitectureforum.com.

Who says there’s no land to be found in Dallas? This estate at 10620 Strait Lane is situated on
four lush acres between Walnut Hill and Royal Lane within Karanouh Plancke Estates. Reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, the house was built with an eye to the environs — a treed and gardened expanse with fountains, koi ponds and loggias surrounded entirely by eight-foot custom iron perimeter fencing. The nearly 13,000-square-foot house, though opulent and arched and wanting for nothing, almost feels like punctuation amidst the grounds, glorious and unexpected as they are, just minutes from Preston Road shopping. Designed by Richard Drummond Davis and completed 13 years ago, the five-bedroom home makes the most of its lush location, which features an Olympic-sized pool area, paths and streams to take the dedicated walker past a two-bedroom guesthouse and through ample lawns and indigenous plantings, leaving the home’s ochre stonework hidden behind mature foliage. Inside, a grand French limestone entry topped with pecky cypress ceilings sets a tone of size, scale and muted color from the outset. Dark wood moldings, staircases, beams and window frames throughout
the house add texture and warmth to the pervasive stonework, particularly on the first floor, where two master suites are situated. A chef’s kitchen with a Miele “oven wall” of three ovens, including two warming drawers, all stainless-steel, soapstone island and a refrigerated Sub-Zero pantry room occupy the first floor, along with a wine room that can accommodate 2,300 bottles and boasts a European concave-barreled stone floor. Two studies, a game room, exercise studio, three formal living areas, and dining and breakfast rooms complete the first floor, including four fireplaces and four full and three half baths. Upstairs, three bright and spacious bedrooms have hand-scraped hardwood floors, high ceilings, tall windows and French doors. Each has a bath outfitted with Perrin & Rowe fixtures. More than 20 custom sconces were fabricated specifically for the home. The large dining room accommodates a generous 90-inch round table, and the largest living room has a hand-painted beamed ceiling and terracotta floors that have been “pillowed” for a European look. Additionally, the home features a heated and air conditioned nine-car garage with Italian lighting at each bay, stainless-steel wainscoting and an entertainment area. The home is listed at $19,999,000. To learn more about this unique property or to arrange a viewing of 10620 Strait Lane, contact Lisa Besserer, 214.543.2940.

A local landmark with a French château-style landscape is also for sale on this luxe lane. Set on three-plus acres, the 16,000-square-foot house coined “The Dallas White House” resembles the North Portico of the true White House with
its signature symmetry, balustrade, columns and roofline. The property underwent extensive renovation from 2001 to 2003. Inside, two galleries flank each side of the residence, with a family room and formal living room leading from the foyer. Beyond the living room sits a library with a 17th-century Louis XIII limestone fireplace. In the kitchen, a 15th-century carved gothic granite fireplace surrounds the Viking range, and a triple-groin vault ceiling anchors a Louis XIV-style chandelier. The butler’s pantry has a designated silver closet, and the wine cellar, crafted from antique brick, is also topped with a groin-vault ceiling. In the gallery leading to the dining room, a French wall mural and four Mizner chandeliers complement the limestone flooring. A full catering kitchen and laundry facilities are also located on the first floor, along with an office, walk-in refrigerator and six-car garage, with two extra long spaces for limousines. Ascend the dramatic wrought-iron staircase, which was modeled after one in a Paris museum, and you enter a gallery
with Italian chandeliers and antique cornices that leads into the master suite. Paneled walls and a carved 18th-century oak fireplace add charm to the sitting room. A his-and-her bath and closet are perfectly positioned on either side of the bedroom; the baths feature a double Jacuzzi tub, custom marble floors and separate shower, and the spacious closets are of custom mahogany. Two additional bedroom suites on the second floor have stunning views across the lush gardens. Also on the second floor, easily accessed by an elevator, is a Paul Labute-equipped theater that seats 24, with a full bar. The grounds are equally breathtaking and pristine, with traditional French parterre gardens throughout the property, separated and connected by flagstone and crushed-stone pathways. The loggia, which overlooks a double pool, may be enclosed with electronically operated screens, and heated or cooled. The tennis court has an accompanying pavilion. For outdoor dining, fire up the barbecue — a loggia with a fireplace and built-in grill, with views over the cloverleaf koi pond and gazebo. The home is listed at $19,500,000. For the busy family that needs a ready-to-move-in, picture-perfect home, this three-story brick-and-stone traditional-styled house provides space, comfort and ease of living. Just a few blocks from the SMU campus, the
13-year-old home offers 7,339 square feet of elegance with a traditional floor plan, six bedrooms, six full and two half baths, luxurious finishings and sophisticated decoration. A swooping staircase with decorative ironwork highlights the foyer, which anchors the formal living space on either side. The living room, with its oversized wood-burning cut-stone fireplace, features floor-to-ceiling windows and stunning Gracie wallpaper. On the right, the dining room is equally bright, with a soaring wall of windows. Also on the first floor, which is laid with rich hardwoods, are a wood-paneled office with dark
plantation shutters, butler’s pantry, wine room, large walk-in pantry and an open kitchen that invites lingering, in both the cooking and dining areas. Patterned white limestone floors underlay a functional and beautifully light space that features Ann Sacks tile backsplash, double built-in stainless Sub-Zero refrigerators, double ranges, a center island with white marble top and sink, and copious custom storage. A breakfast area and counter, adjacent to the large first-floor family room, provide ample seating. Overlooking the patio and back lawn, the den boasts numerous built-ins and an oversized wood-burning fireplace. The home is listed at $3,799,000.
