    EXERCISE 3

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

The removal of forests has resulted in severe effects on the people and environment.

For starters, it has affected the lives of forest-dependent people. For them, the forest is their

home which provides them with food, building materials and firewood. Consequently, their

    natural resources would decrease.

Secondly, deforestation results in regional effects. As forests ensure the preservationof water, plants and wildlife, their removal causes extensive flooding, drought, soil erosion,

pollution and pest problems. Deforestation also has serious effects globally, especially on

the climate and pollution. When trees are burnt or cut down, the carbon dioxide that has

been stored up in the forests is absorbed by the atmosphere, which consequently worsens the

    greenhouse effect.

Tropical forests are home to many animal and plant species. However, these flora

and fauna are fast disappearing as a result of deforestation. There is a likelihood of the

extinction of many types of wildlife.

Protecting the forests is therefore important. However, forest protection can only

happen with the co-operation of the government, private sector and people.

Write a summary on the effects of deforestation.

The term exotic pet covers a variety of species. When choosing such pets, the first

decision will be between a small or caged pet, a reptile such as a lizard or a snake, or an

amphibian such as a frog or an insect. Even once the choices have been narrowed down,

there are still a lot of choices to make.

Different people have exotic pets for different reasons. Some owners simply want to

have a pet that is out of the ordinary. Others may want a pet that does not require a lot of

attention. In the end, the decision to acquire an exotic pet must be based on the amount of the

time and attention available to give to a pet, and the ability to provide adequate housing,

    space and care.

Many exotic pets are chosen impulsively without prior research. So, it is important to

spend time learning about a potential pet before bringing it home. Here are some factors to

consider when making a choice. First and foremost, find out which kinds of pets are legal in

your area. Find out also the feeding requirements and the type of housing suitable for the

    exotic pet you want.

Different animals live in different types of deserts. Animals that live in deserts have

adaptations to cope with the lack of water, the extreme temperatures and the shortage of

food. To avoid daytime heat, many desert animals are nocturnal; they burrow beneath the

surface or hide in the shade during the day, emerging at night to eat.

Because of the harsh conditions in the desert, animals that live there have manyadaptations. Some animals never drink but get their water from seeds. Other animals adapt

by spending most of the day underground and out of the hot sun. Rattlesnakes, kangaroo rats

and kit foxes are called nocturnal because they only come out at night to eat and hunt. Some

    animals never come above ground.

When you think of the desert, the first animal that you might think of is the camel.

Birds are wonderful pets to have. They are friendly and easy to tame. Depending on

the breed chosen, you may teach a bird to talk, sing and interact freely with you. You can also

tame your bird to nap, shower or eat along with you. Budgerigars, canaries and finches are the

    EXERCISE 9

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

Trees are very important to all of us. Hence, we need to take good care of them. Trees

produce life-giving oxygen. They absorb carbon dioxide while helping to cool the area

around them. When trees are cut down and burnt, they release carbon dioxide into theatmosphere. This increases the green house effect which in turn creates global warming.

Trees provide shade and fruits to quench our hunger and thirst. Birds and wildlife

build their homes in the trees. When trees are destroyed, these creatures lose their habitat and

    gradually become extinct.

Another important value of trees is they prevent soil erosion by holding the soil

together. When trees are removed, the top soil becomes loose and is easily washed down by

rain water. This can cause landslides which in turn cause rivers to overflow and create floods.

Cutting down of trees on a large scale can cause rivers and streams to dry up.

Trees also have aesthetic value. They beautify and brighten up their surrounding areas.

They also help to relieve stress by providing a sight for sore eyes.

In many ways, cycling is a better exercise than jogging. It exercises the heart better

than walking without the pounding of jogging. One can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at

any times of the year and at low cost. Little or no time is lost as bike travel can be used to getto work, perform errands or enjoy the outdoors.

Commuting by bicycle reduces pollution that causes asthma and bronchitis. This is

because a commuting cyclist does not cause air pollution than commuting motorist. Some

people think that cycling has more hazards on the road. But actually, cycling has similar risks

    to travelling by automobiles.

Forty five minutes of cycling six days a week keeps anyone feeling good but not

great. Two hours per day keeps him very strong and controls his weight and six hours a day

makes him feel like a superman after several weeks.

Since lower amounts of exercise improve ones health but higher amounts improve

ones fitness, a minimum of thirty minutes a day of cycling is recommended. The time spent

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

Recent studies in many countries show that many children are overweight. These obese

children will most likely become obese adults suffering from ailments, such as, diabetes and

heart disease. One main reason for the increasing number of fat children is that schools have cut

down on physical education classes. So parents must step in and make sure that their children

are getting enough physical exercise. Exercising with their children is a great way for parents

to spend quality time with them and improve their health.

There are three fun play activities parents can do with their children. Parents can go

strolling or jogging with the children. This is one of the most convenient workouts. With

babies, push them in a jogger.

Playing basketball with the child is also a good workout. They can play one-on-one

and keep score. The child gets thrilled if the child can beat the father. Frequent playing

basketball with their children will help them to get into shape.

Another enjoyable way of trimming themselves and their children is to take the

children to the track. Not only are parents and children enjoying every moment together, but

they are also burning their unwanted fat.

Write a summary on what parents can do to overcome obesity.

The PMR examination is around the corner. You are nervous and cannot seem toconcentrate on your studies. What can you do? Well, there are a few steps that you can

take to help you study better.

First of all, pay attention to the teachers when she is teaching. Taking down

sure you do some revision on your own. This can be done efficiently by coming up with a

time-table to help you organize your time better. When you study, find a place that is

quiet and free from distractions. You can use the library, your room or even your kitchen

for this purpose. If you dont like studying on your own, group study can also help. Find

a few reliable friends and agree on a time to study together.

However, you must ensure that you get enough sleep as well, especially the night

Housing considerations in Klang Valley are primarily based on location. Prices

and amenities are based on location as well. The closer the properties is to urban centers,

the higher the prices are likely to be. Prices of houses also tend to fluctuate and potential

buyers should seek the services of the reputable real estate agency.

Property in Malaysia can still be considered as being cheap and the choices are

quite good. The apartments, houses and condominiums are of good quality. In the city of

has even spread to some primary commercial and residential areas in the suburbs.

Therefore it is prudent to find a location close to where one works.

As a very rough guideline, a comfortable house or apartment in the parts of the

city which expatriates favour such as Bangsar, Sri Hartamas and Ampang would cost in

Music plays an important role in your life. Most of the time we would relate music to

of the teaching of Maths and Science in English, I do not see any difference in the English used

especially by our young. I would like to suggest a few steps to raise the standard of English in

    Malaysia.

What needs to be done first and foremost is to make it compulsory for students to pass the

English paper in all government examinations. Then only will people take the language seriously.

In schools too, the number of English periods per week should be increased. Ideally, students

should have English lessons every day. If we are short of English teachers, perhaps we should

consider hiring native speakers to teach the subject. I am sure that there are many wives of

expatriates here who are capable of teaching the subject. Besides, students must be encouraged to

make reading a part of their daily activities. Apart from reading English books, they can also watch

    good English programmes on television.

I think much needs to be done to bring back English to its glory days.
