HIT THE BULL’S EYE HOW TO CRACK
GROUP DISCUSSION?
About Group Discussion: Group Discussion is a process where exchange of ideas and opinions are debated upon. This process is mostly used for selecting candidates for admission to management schools basically for MBA.
A typical GD comprises of a small group of candidates. Each group is then given a topic for discussion. The topic can be general or specific. Example: Kashmir Conflict or just a phrase saying "Where there's a will there's a way".
Remember to take a stand during the discussion. It is not necessary that you conclude by a positive or a negative viewpoint, but to summarize the discussion well and being neutral gives you an edge over others. The candidates are given a time limit for discussing this topic. Each participant has to give his or her views about this topic. The panelists are there to judge the discussion. After the time limit is over, the best candidate from the group is selected. The same process is followed for other groups.
Tips on GROUP DISCUSSION
To help you better we have compiled a list of points that you should keep in mind while you participate in a group discussion.
Group discussions are an important part of the selection process for admission into a B-School of your choice. You have passed the intelligence test, with GD, your oratory and communication skills along with your problem solving skills will be tested.
Let’s read about the points that you should keep in mind:
1) Adequate matter/ Subject matter is essential: You should have subject knowledge and be well aware of the latest happenings around you, not just in India but around the world as well. To be in a better position, make sure that you have in-depth knowledge on the subject. Subject knowledge is a pre-requisite while you are preparing for a group discussion because you will then have the power to steer the conversation to whichever direction you want to. If you can memorize some relevant data, it will be an added advantage.
2) Make sure you Read Widely: Being an avid reader will help you in group discussions. Last minute preparations you are strictly a no no, while you are preparing for group discussions. You should read over a period of time. Reading not only adds to your knowledge database, but enhances your vocabulary skills as well. Plus reading over a period of time, helps in your understanding of a particular subject/ topic better.
3) Choose Magazines that are Rich in Content: Always opt for magazines that are content rich and not just full of advertisements. Often magazines have columns which are promoting a particular institute etc. Avoid such magazines, do some research and buy the best that will be beneficial for you in the long run.
4) Be Aware of Topics that are repeated: Often, there are topics which re-appear with minute changes and minor variations. Be aware of such topics well in advance so that you have ample time to prepare for the same. For example the issues of terrorism, gender inequality, poverty, Ayodhya conflict, liberalization and privatization, reservations in educational institutions etc often appear as GD topics. Make sure you know these topics well and can come up with some unique, insightful points along with dates, stating facts.
5) Work on your Communication Skills: You should be well versed in your communication skills. You should have a good vocabulary and a decent command over English. Much before your actual group discussion, rehearse well. You can sit with a group of friends and choose a topic and indulge in a friendly banter. Not only will this increase your knowledge, you will be a better speaker by the time it is time for your GD.
6) Listen to the Topic Given During GD Carefully: Listen to the topic carefully and understand it... Be alert and vigilant. Sometimes, the topic may be really simple but the manner in which it is presented to you, can be baffling. The first thing that you should do after hearing the topic is by structuring it on the sheet that is given to you to make notes. Make a rough sketch of the points that you would like to speak aloud. You will be at an advantage if you open the discussion, but then beware of what you speak. Deviating from the main topic, or passing strong statements like ‘I agree/ or disagree …’ should be avoided. Your strategy should be to test the waters and make a generic
PANORAMA QUARTERLY | Issue2 6
statement relevant to the topic. If you can, back it up by relevant data.
7) Try and Maintain a Balance in your Tone: Besides what you are saying, remember that the panellists are observing your body language as well. If you do not agree with the other student’s point of view, do not raise your tone in objection. Listen to his point of view and instead of dismissing it upfront, try and draw a common ground. .
8) Listening Skills are Essential: Carefully listen to what others have to say. Just speaking throughout the discussion doesn’t make you smart, you should also give others a chance to speak. Try and listen to him/her, respect their view point
too. If the speaker is making an eye-contact with you remember to acknowledge him by saying “yes, you agree” or just by nodding your head, so that the speaker is aware that his listeners are listening to him and paying full attention. This will also show that you are vigilant and are an active participant in the discussion.
9) Body Gestures are very important: The panellists observe the way you sit and react in the course of the discussion. . Body gestures are very important, because your body language says a lot about you. In a GD, sit straight, avoid leaning back on to the chair or knocking the table with pen or your fingers. Also, do not get distracted easily. For example, if the door in room you are sitting in opens, do not look back to see who it is, this will show how distracted you are.
10) Be the first and also the Last to Speak: As mentioned earlier, initiating a GD is an advantage. Closing it too also adds brownie points. If you can grab the opportunity to close the discussion, then you should summarize it. If the group has not reached a conclusion try concluding it.
Imagine you are driving and you have the power to accelerate or brake according to the situation on the road and avoid any accidents. Try to be that conscientious driver in a GD. Take the initiative, know when to apply your brakes and when to seize the opportunity and accelerate the conversation to reach to a desired destination; conclusion in your case.
Good luck!

MEGHAVI RAVAL
MBA (MARKETING) Selected in J. K. MACHINE TOOLS
What does it take to follow your passion? Meghavi Raval—works as a Marketing Executive & promoted to Export Exeutive after 15 days of my on the job performance with Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools.
I started seriously searching for jobs this past December when I was in Forth semester about to finish my master’s in Business Administration. I was finishing a Master of Business Administration in Marketing, so I was looking for jobs in advertising, branding and marketing, but as well as jobs in the nonprofit sector. Jobs that dealt with creativity, innovation, event planning, volunteer management, and community organizing.
I started this past December as a Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools. J 'Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools' is a leading name amongst the manufacturers, suppliers and exporters engaged in the fabrication of Briquette Machine, Briquetting Plant & Gasifiers.
Since inception in the year 1994, company have successfully created a remarkable position as a quality manufacturer of Briquetting Machinery & Biomass Briquetting Plant which are manufactured employing the cutting-edge technology, ensuring substantial storing and combustible capacity. Hence, our Briquette Machines are
incredibly efficient to convert Agro-Forestry-Milling residues into Bio-coal and energy resources.
My role has me working with buyers and suppliers and converting opportunity into requirements. I am the liaison between the national and international market and organization. I provide my expertise on marketing strategy, event development, leadership development, and community development. I also work with each of the events to meet their fundraising goals and other metrics set forth by the Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools. I think that my business background, my undergraduate degree is in marketing, my volunteer management experience, and my graduate work in student activities helped me land this job. Having an in-depth understanding of business practices makes it easier to explain to volunteers and community members where the money they raise goes and how the Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools is structured and managed.
If someone has a passion to create a world where cancer is no longer a threat, a passion to unite a community around a single cause, and a passion to develop community leaders, then they will be able to find a way into this field. I suggest that someone volunteer with this type of organization to gain an understanding of the volunteer perspective because as a staff member, you become removed from what it is like to be a volunteer. I volunteer outside of work to be able to keep that perspective. Being able to have an understanding of the staff and volunteer perspectives will allow you to create and sustain positive relationships with the people you work with and serve on a daily basis.
Additionally, someone does not need to have a loud and outgoing
personality to be successful in this field – he/she just needs to be confident in his/her abilities and be willing to listen and learn. Not all volunteers that a person will interact with will be 100% extroverted – volunteers come in all forms. Now I am going for a business tour at South Africa for finalizing the deal.
The largest piece of advice I can offer is that everything will work out if someone is willing to put in the time and effort. I know that after the first month of job searching that I began to think that I may never be able to find a job, never mind a job that I loved. What kept me going was what my boss at my internship during graduate school told me: “Don’t give up. You will find a job. Even when you think you may never find one, keep going and it will all work out.” Those simple words kept me going through the process and thank you very much to Training and Placement Cell for helping me to find a dream job.
BITTU SINGH
B.E. (E.C.) Selected in
CAPE ELECTRICAL PVT. LTD.
Hello I am Bittu Singh. I got selected off campus for OBO Betterman & Cape Electrical Pvt. Ltd. It feels great to be selected in college campus and among students of different college and University. And having your job letter in your hands before your engineering gets over can be counted as one of the best days of your life.
Truly it was not easy as it looks like it takes lot of hard work and proper understanding of concepts of your academic subjects. A good preparation
PANORAMA QUARTERLY | Issue2 8
is very necessary to enter into a corporate world and to be a representative employee of an organization. But it’s not so tough if you have a strong determination and skills. Our college does provide all updates and instructions about campus and venue. Faculties personally attended all students who are willing to face campus.
To be selected in an organization one should start working on communication skills; almost all companies expect first this from their employee. You should know very clear what kind of work and task one perform in organization. For technical preparation, go through basics first and go through various websites and try to be updated with new technology.
In interview try to be honest don't bluff because they quickly get it. And be confident; answer properly whatever they ask you. I practiced it many times with my friends to overcome my nervousness, it does help a lot.
To get selected is not so toughest part but even not so that easy. In my case that worked well as to show your capabilities.
I am very much thankful to Atmiya Institute of Technology & Science and especially our faculties; they mailed us and provided us each every possible material to get selected.
CAMPFIRE
MOTIVATIONAL STORY
The Professor began his class by
holding up a glass with some water in
it. He held it up for all to see & asked
the students “How much do you think
this glass weighs?”
.’50gms!’….. ’100gms!’ …..’125 gms’
…the students answered.
.
“I really don’t know unless I weigh it,”
said the professor, “but, my question
is: What would happen if I held it up
like this for a few minutes?”…. .
‘Nothing’ …..the students said.
.
‘Ok what would happen if I held it up
like this for an hour?’ the professor
asked.
‘Your arm would begin to ache’ said
one of the student
.
“You’re right, now what would
happen if I held it for a day?”
“Your arm could go numb; you might
have severe muscle stress & paralysis
& have to go to hospital for sure!”
….. Ventured another student & all the
students laughed.
“Very good.
But during all this, did the weight of
the glass change?” Asked the
professor.
‘No’…. Was the answer.
“Then what caused the arm ache & the
muscle stress?”
The students were puzzled.
“What should I do now to come out of
pain?” asked professor again.
“Put the glass down!” said one of the
students
.
“Exactly!” said the professor.
Life’s problems are something like
this.
.
Hold it for a few minutes in your head
& they seem OK.
Think of them for a long time & they
begin to ache.
.
Hold it even longer & they begin to
paralyze you. You will not be able to
do anything.
.
It’s important to think of the
challenges or problems in your life,
But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to
‘PUT THEM DOWN’ at the end of
every day before you go to sleep…
.
That way, you are not stressed, you
wake up every day fresh &strong &
can handle any issue, any challenge
that comes your way!
PANORAMA QUARTERLY | Issue2 9
Software Development is no longer
considered as an art. But it was made
as an engineering practice. A
successful software developer is a
person who is able to write each line
of code with passion. And passion
cannot be obtained by any software
engineering degree, it must come
from within yourself.
1. Be passionate about the being a
software developer. If you are not
passionate for sitting in front of the
PC for the whole day, simply enjoying
the lines of code you write; this is not
for you.
2. Always start with the simple hello
world.
3. Don't try to learn all the
programming languages. What you
need to know is the concepts.
4. Don't start programming with a
language such as C/C++. Try
something like Java or C Sharp.
5. When you face an error. Always tell
to yourself, "I'm NOT ALONE,
Someone in this world should have
faced the same error before". And
GOOGLE the exact error message.
Chances are 99% you will find the
answer.
6. Be more public. If you will not show
others that you are cool and you
deserve more, how will they know?
There is simple way to do that - start
blogging, ask and answer questions,
ensure Google knows something
about you. Share your knowledge in
your team and project. If you learned
something new, why do not share it.
You will forget it if will not be trying it.
7. Never use Microsoft notepad to do
coding. Use at least Notepad++.
8. When you see an application (web
application or windows), tell
yourself. If this is an application. Then
it's technically possible for me to build
a similar one.
9. When you see an application (web
application or windows), try to
model it in your mind. Always ask
yourself, can you build a similar
application yourself. If not try to find
the place where you think you might
get stuck. And try to Google and find
how to do it.
10. If you get stuck in a code logic for
more than two hours; STOP your
work; go out to have a tea or coffee,
before trying it again.
11. Be confident. Help others and ask
from others. Different people will
have different aspects to solve an
issue.
12. Never be ashamed, when you
find the bug as a single line of code.
Usually most of the bugs can be
corrected in a single line of code.
What matters is, how hard you tried
in different aspects to solve the issue.
13. Find a mentor. This does not
mean that you a need a person who
will help you in doing your job - it is a
coach or a more senior staff then you
are. This means that you need a
person who stays where you want to
be and you need to take a leaf from
his/her book. And if he will not be
high enough - you will need to find
another. But all the time you need to
have that person. Also have people,
friends if you will, who will help you
keep on track. It could be your wife or
girlfriend, or best friend who always
supports you (in my case he is a
developer, but this doesn't matter).
