Most of the great musicians have a nice story going back to their childhood, how they were first introduced to mu-sic, how they met their first instrument. Gülfem, a little girl falls in love with violin at first sight. The book is about her passion, the difficulties she had to overcome to play the violin. She then introduced the violin to her family, and even to the town she lives in. Soon she became a master.

The Book of Dede Korkut is one of the most important literary works in the history of Turkic cultures, which includes a variety of exciting ancient stories that reflect the culture, histo-ry and literature of the Oghuz Turks. Continuously recited as part of a strong storytelling tradition among Turks living in Central Asia, these stories travelled over centuries and through a large geographical area covering Azerbaijan and northeast Anatolia (Turkey), with each Turkic group living in these regions adopting them as their own until they were put in writing in early 15th century Anato-lia.The book includes a brief introduc-tion where the cultural context is dis-cussed, highlighting the characteristics and lifestyles of its protagonists, as well as the origins and history of the twelve stories illustrated in the book. A symbolic map is included to high-light the regions where these stories might have taken place. In order to make The Book of Dede Korkut acces-sible to children and young adults, the original stories are abridged and the language is simplified.

This book is a call to critical think-ing. Starts with examples from selected world literature, evolves into philo-sophical texts. The reply to the ques-tion “Why philosophy?” comes from two different philosophers;- The unexamined life is not worth liv-ing. Socrates- To live without philosophizing is in truth the same as keeping the eyes closed without attempting to open them. Descartes

PHILOSOPHY WITH KIDS

SCIENTIST KID

There are many obstacles to reach knowledge. The most important one is the surrounding of mind by prej-udice during childhood where the critical thinking is not developed properly. Children should be intro-duced to scientific and philosophical methods to overcome this as early as possible. During their education children are introduced various branches of sci-ence but do not have the chance of speculating on questions like “What is science?” “What is scientific thinking?” This book calls them to think over again on these and similar questions.

Nasreddin Hodja, an elderly wise man and a legendary folkloric char-acter from Anatolia (Turkey) during the medieval ages, was known for his humor and quick-witted actions that he used to address difficult social or personal problems. Hodja’s unexpect-ed, light-hearted reactions to com-plex problems wisely diagnosed the real reasons behind universal prob-lems caused by simple human nature. Hodja’s wisdom reflected a sophisti-cated worldview that emanated from the sufi thought that was prevalent in Anatolia at the time, which was made accessible to mostly illiterate public through humor and storytelling. These stories have passed from generation to generation in a wide geographical area covering present day Turkey, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Cen-tral Asia, where each culture altered and adapted Hodja’s stories as they encountered them, making them their own. That is why Nasreddin Hodja became a universal character claimed by Turks, Persians, and Arabs alike, resulting numerous identities for their chief protagonist and numerous ver-sions of his adventures.

Jokes of Nasreddin Hodja includes 150 stories, fully illustrated in color accompanied by a text that has been simplified to appeal to children, and young adults.
