Greeting Brothers and Sisters,

Fantastic News: An Icarian Has Climbed Mt. Ever-est! I was amazed to read an email from Cynthia Pappas Hollister notifying me that her sister, Pamela Pappas, stood on top of Mt. Everest, on May 13, 2011! To everyone’s knowledge and belief, she is the fi rst Ikarian to do so and unoffi cially the 197th woman to make the dangerous ascent. Pamela is a native of Verona, Pennsylvania. Her grandpar-ents emigrated from Ikaria in the early 1900’s. Her grandfather, John Viores, was from Daphni and her grandmother, Vasiliki, was from Xyloserti/Chrys-ostomos. She is the daughter of Spiro and Georgia Pappas of Verona. Pamela, a nuclear pharmacist for Cardinal Health, currently resides in Tampa, Florida, and is a member of Helios Chapter in Clearwater. Though you can read a brief account of her trip on the following blog - http://www.elevationoutdoors.com/web-exclusives/climbing-everest/peak-freaks-team-members-stands-on-top-of-the-world/ - it is our fervent hope to hear of her adventure via a future IKARIA Magazine article or during a presentation at an upcoming Convention. Congratulations to Pamela on a remarkable personal achievement! This past spring, the Chapters of the Brotherhood, the Pan-Icarian Foundation and the Supreme Lodge have been engaged on many issues and endeavors. Time has passed quickly and we are heading towards a promising last act in Los Angeles come September.

2011 Convention:The OINOE Chapter has hit its mark of full occu-pancy for the upcoming 108th Supreme Convention. The Convention schedule has solidifi ed and features special Hollywood area tours, a pre-Glendi comedy show starring Basile and the “Golden Age of Holly-wood” Grand Banquet. Oinoe is ready to incorporate your photographs and greetings in the Commemora-tive Convention Album, so please support them via the enclosed ad form.

2012 Convention:The THERMA Chapter has started preparing for our 2012 Supreme Convention. They are already at work

developing their website and planning future email notifi cations. With such enthusiasm in the wings, do not be surprised to fi nd information for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina waiting for you when you return from Los Angeles!

2013 Convention Bids:The Supreme Lodge encourages all interested Chap-ters to consider proposing for the 2013 Supreme Convention and prepare bids for review in Los An-geles. Smaller Chapters need not be intimidated by ‘going it alone’. Consider teaming up with another neighboring Chapter as has been done before. Some Lodge Offi cers have led past Convention planning efforts and are available to help you with any con-cerns or useful professional contacts.

Youth Conference:I was glad to attend this year’s Youth Conference hosted by the ATHERAS Chapter in Philadelphia and Atlantic City. At the 20th Annual Hermes Expo, the Pan-Icarian Youth Delegates participated in the Young Professionals Seminar featuring Dr. Spiro Spireas, President of Sigma Pharma; US Congress-man John Sarbanes; Aris Melissaratos, Assistant to the Dean of John Hopkins University; Nick Lariga-kis, Executive Director of the American Hellenic Institute; and Yiannis Sianis of the fi rm Calamos Investments. The speakers each recounted their perspectives on their professional careers and life in general. I believe their stories have proved inspira-tional to our organization’s future leadership. Thank you to all the young adults who attended!

Foundation:While a swirl of eventful news has enfolded the Old Age Home in Ikaria, circumstances are proceeding to a positive resolution regarding the John Sourou-manis’ bequest and litigation against the Pan-Icarian Foundation and various PIB Offi cers. The agree-ment made between Foundation Chairman, Gus Yiakas and the Metropolitan of Samos on November 22 for a new oversight board still holds as the case winds towards resolution in the U.S. The Founda-tion will report more details as court dates and deci-sions pass.

PIB Membership:I would ask each Chapter to fi nish collecting their membership dues and immediately submit their Per Capita to the Supreme Lodge Treasurer. We have enclosed a Convention Delegate Form that must be returned by August 1st so that your Chapter’s Dele-gates can be properly registered prior to their arrival in Los Angeles. The Lodge will be coordinating closely with the Oinoe Chapter in this regard. We have just about two months to do this and respect-fully request your help in preventing unacceptably late submissions that strain the Offi cers and the Convention with needless last minute paperwork and fi nancial accounting. Working together, we can be successful.

Chapter Best Practice Guide:This year, I set out a goal to establish a Chapter Best Practice Guide, a ‘how to manual’ of sorts that would allow the Chapters to share their best ideas and practices. The Lodge expects that this sharing of information will have a positive infl uence on each Chapter and our Brotherhood. By allowing them in-sight on what has worked best for others, this Guide would also be instrumental in assisting the newest Chapters to form a solid foundation for their long-term growth and vitality. We have started this effort by asking that each Chapter President work with their fellow Offi cers to review and complete a survey form. With the majority of the 2010-2011 season complete, it is our belief that identifying what has worked well in terms of membership growth, exceptional events, great fundraisers, etc., will become evident.

The Supreme Lodge is most interested in each Chap-ter team’s thoughts and suggestions. We are very op-timistic that this project will give useful incite on the state of our organization. The Supreme Lodge will communicate our fi ndings at the Supreme Conven-tion and through follow-up correspondence.

ICAROS 100 Contest:Lastly, comes a bit of fun! In celebration of our Ikarian Independence, the Lodge would like to promote the ICAROS 100 Contest. Drawing on the artistic talents of our membership, we would like to have 100 Icaros statuettes completed by the 2012 Centennial. Using a 12” wooden artist manikin as the common canvas, we invite you to submit a cre-ative interpretation of our mythic namesake. Besides the mandatory wooden manikin, anything goes and any types of artist media are welcome. The entries are intended to be displayed at both the 2011 and 2012 Conventions. We hope you take up this chal-lenge.

Thank you to Chapter Christ E. Aivaliotis #17 for hosting the Supreme Lodge meeting and showing true Icarian/Buckeye Hospitality.

The chapters in this District are: Pramne #1 (Young-town, OH), V.I. Chembithes #2 (Akron, OH), Pharos #3 (Cleveland, OH), Daedalos #4 (Warren, OH), Doliche #6 (Steubenville, OH), Icaros #7 (Pittsburgh, PA), Christ E. Aivaliotis #17 (Columbus, OH) and Drakanon #24 (Parma, OH).

Pramne #1 (Youngtown, OH): Pramne #1 had their an-nual Christmas party December 2, 2010, at the Olive Gar-den in Boardman. Then they took a break in meetings during the winter months and will resume in March or April depending on the weather. The Elias girls are plan-ning on attending the Youth Conference sponsored by Chapter Atheras #12 (Philadelphia), in conjunction with, the Hermes Expo in Atlantic City.

V.I. Chembithes #2 (Akron, OH): An enthusiastic chapter who had a successful Reverse Lottery Raffl e in the fall, a Christmas Party in December and a Membership Appre-ciation Luncheon in February.

Pharos #3 (Cleveland, OH): In the fall they had their annual Halloween Party and a “Makaronada” Fundraiser for Flora Lidoriki. In December they had their annual Christmas Party (where Santa came, too) and brought an end to 2010 and rang in 2011 with an Ikariotiko New Year’s Eve Party. Their annual Independence Day Dance will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Annuncia-tion Greek Orthodox Church. I am looking forward to attending the dance.

Daedalos #4 (Warren, OH): A very small chapter who enjoyed their annual Christmas Party December 4, 2010, at the Four Star Diner.

Doliche #6 (Steubenville, OH): December 16, 2010, members of Doliche #6 enjoyed their Ikarian Christmas Social at Yorgo’s!

Icaros #7 (Pittsburgh, PA): A thriving community, who have enjoyed their monthly meetings and Macaronades/Dinners, Fall Picnic, Children’s Halloween/OXI Day Party (where I served as MC for the Kariotaki Spook-tacular Parade), Pizza with Santa Party, New Year’s Eve Celebration and Super Bowl Party (too bad it wasn’t 7 in ‘11 for the Pittsburgh Steelers). Chapter Icaros is prepar-ing for their 11th Annual Steve Manners Icarian Open and 36th Annual Mini-Convention Memorial Day Dance (which I am chairing).

Christ E. Aivaliotis #17 (Columbus, OH): They are pre-paring for another ‘successful’ Golf Outing this coming summer and a picnic.

Drakanon #24 (Parma, OH): Stancato’s Restaurant was the location of their Christmas Party, where Santa made a guest appearance.

I hope the chapters will continue/start to include me in their mailings/e-mail communications, so I know what they are doing and could come to visit during a meeting and/or social activity.

On Saturday, January 22, 2011, a special meeting was called to order by President Nicolas James at the Bev-erly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California the future site of the site of the 2011 convention. It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that the Oinoe Chapter will be hosting this year’s convention. The Oinoe Chapter treated us to a lovely luncheon at Restaurant Circa 55 during their chapter meeting. The Hilton is the home of the Golden Globe Awards, the Producer’s Guild Awards and 175 other Red Carpet events. In fact the night of our meeting happened to coincide with the Producer’s Guild Award and some of us were lucky enough to have caught a glimpse of James Cameron during his acceptance speech!!Costa Frangos gave us an extensive tour of the hotel’s beautiful accommodations which included the magnifi -cent Grand Ballroom and the meeting rooms which are all located adjacent to the lobby making accessibility quite advantageous. The Restaurant Circa 55, which will remain open 24 hours a day for our convention, has a prime pool view to Trader Vic’s Lounge. As well as, The Aqua Star Pool where some of our events will take place. Also included, is the La Chateau Fine Wine and Tasting Room and The Aqua Star Spa that connects to the Stardust Outside Patio. The room rates have been secured at an incredibly low rate of $149.00 per night with a courtesy extension of 5 days prior and 5 days after the convention. “The Wings of Icaros Awards” may also take place at this time. The Award ceremony would include a short awards ceremony recognizing our own family and friends within the Greek/Icarian community and ending with the recognition of the current scholarship recipients. These honorees would be seated at various tables as they do

It has been a long and cold winter season for the North-eastern Chapters of the Pan Icarian Brotherhood. Like the other Chapters, we welcome the changing seasons and the warm summer months ahead. Though the mercury levels have frequently fallen far below zero, the Buffalo, Toronto, and Montreal Chapters still managed to gather during the holidays, to hold Chapter meetings and discuss future goals and upcoming annual events. The district’s six chapters have wonderful traditions that their members look forward to each and every year.

Chapter # 26 (“Panagia”), Buffalo New York, has been very active this past year and President Nikolas G. Skaros has plans on continuing the Chapter’s involvement in the Greek community. Arrangements were made with the local Greek Orthodox Church, for the Chapter to pre-pare the traditional Magiritsa dish following the Easter midnight liturgy. This has become an excellent tradition, which both the Chapter members and church parishioners


have thoroughly come to enjoy. The Buffalo Chapter has also discussed plans to prepare loukoumathes for the parish, this spring and summer, as a possible fund raising opportunity for the Brotherhood and Chapter.

Chapter # 21, Toronto, Ontario, held Chapter elections recently, which resulted in Vassilis Fradelos as their newly elected Chapter President. Vassilis has been an ac-tive member of the Toronto Chapter for many years, and many of you will remember his poetic recital at this past year’s National Convention, in Detroit. Vassilis’ passion for the Brotherhood and his strong commitment to the Ikarian traditions and values will help ensure a success-ful presidency. I am confi dent that Vassili will help to strengthen the Chapter and the Pan Icarian Brotherhood. I wish to congratulate Vassilis on the election, and I look forward to working with him.

Chapter #22 (Icaros of Montreal), Montreal, Quebec, is an active Chapter which regularly gathers for chapter events and business. On March 27th, the Chapter mem-bers participated in a parade honoring the March 25th Greek Independence Day. This is a great tradition which helps bring the Chapter members together while also pro-moting our Greek heritage. In May, “Icaros of Montreal” also held their annual general assembly gathering and Mothers Day celebrations for the Chapter members.

As my last year serving as District Six Governor comes to a close I would like to thank the Buffalo, Montreal, and Toronto Chapters; as well as the Supreme Lodge and Pan Icarian Brother for their support and coopera-tion throughout my term. This has been an invaluable experience, which allowed me to learn many things about myself, my Ikarian heritage, and the excellent work the Brotherhood has accomplished throughout the years. I encourage everyone to remain actively involved with their local Chapters, to ensure the Pan Icarian Brother-hood is successful for many generations to come.

Having a red carpet and a white board with sponsors and photographs listed in the lobby area was also discussed. The ceremony would take place at the grand banquet dinner. Another idea that was presented was the possibility of having an offi cial greet-ing committee that would welcome all the guests as they arrived at the hotel and a fashion show during the Friday Evening event.Other reports suggested having a “Tour of Hollywood Stars”, a shuttle on Sunday morning to attend services at St. Sophia Cathedral, and a shuttle to the beach.President Nicolas Pasamihalis gave a brief report re-garding the Icarian Cookbook project, the Myrtle Beach Supreme Lodge meeting and our website.The Pet Project of 100 Interpretations of Icarus was discussed with the possibility of being awarded for the most creative interpretation using a standard stick fi gur mannequin.Gus Yiakas reported on the ongoing diffi culty with PNC bank not being able to write checks and suggested the possibility of changing banks.Lastly, it was recommended that the Brotherhood work on a “How To” manual on providing set of guidelines to follow for each chapter.

I. Meeting Called to Order/Introductions

Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis called the meeting to order at 4:20 p.m. EST, welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked the Columbus chapter (Christ E. Aivaliotis #17) for their hospitality. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis then introduced the other Su-preme Lodge offi cers in attendance.

II. Opening Prayer

Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis led everyone in prayer.

III. Treasurer’s Report

Supreme Secretary E. Terry Platis read aloud the trea-surer’s report that Supreme Treasurer George Paralemos had sent her in advance of the meeting. In his report, Supreme Treasurer George Paralemos noted that as of March 4, 2011, the balance in the Brotherhood’s Citibank checking account was $38,247.67. He also noted that from the date of the 2010 Supreme Convention through March 4, 2011, (i) expenses totaled $11,435.39, (ii) in-come totaled $6,915 (mostly in the form of late per capita dues for the 2010 calendar year) and (iii) 2011 member-ship was at 77 members. To date only four chapters have submitted per capita dues for 2011. A copy of the full report is attached to these minutes.

Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis noted for meeting attendees that the Supreme Lodge had switched its checking account from PNC to Citibank earlier in the year. He also informed the other Supreme Lodge offi cers of diffi culty he recently encountered in cashing a check for per capita dues from the Atheras chapter because the check was made out to “Supreme Lodge” instead of the “Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America.” Discussion followed regarding how to possibly address this issue, including whether the Brotherhood should fi le one or

more “doing business as (DBA)” certifi cates with the Ohio Secretary of State’s offi ce (which would then be fi led with Citibank) and that chapters should be reminded that they should make checks for per capita dues payable to the “Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America.” It was decided that the Supreme Lodge offi cers would continue discussion of the issue at a later time.

IV. Governor’s Reports

District Governor Tom Kochilas presented his report with respect to the District #1 chapters (Pandiki, Atheras, Nea Ikaria, Lefkas and Koursaros). District Governor Tom Kochilas reported that he attended the Pandiki chap-ter’s very successful New Year’s Eve dance, and that he planed to attend the Atheras chapter’ annual dinner-dance later that night. He also reported noted that the Pandiki

chapter was supposed to have held elections at the end of February and that he would follow up with the chapter offi cers to fi nd out who had been elected. He will also follow up with them to fi nd out the date of this year’s Greek Independence Day parade in New York City.Supreme Secretary E. Chebithes, Pharos, Daedalos, Doli-che, Icaros, Christ E. Aivaliotis and Drakanon). V. Meeting Minutes

The meeting minutes from the December 4, 2010 Su-preme Lodge meeting in Wilmington, North Carolina were approved.

VI. Correspondence

Ikaria Flood Assistance: Supreme Secretary E. Terry Pla-tis reported on a request for assistance that the Pan-Icari-an Brotherhood had received from the Icarian Association “Kavo Papas” in Athens (the organization represents the villages of Karkinagri, Amalou, Kalamos, Trapalou, Pezi and Lagada) with respect to the major storm and related fl ooding and landslide that hit Ikaria in October. Cop-ies of the letter requesting assistance, together with an engineering study assessing the damage to the area, were circulated to meeting attendees. Supreme Secretary E. Terry Platis reported that the villages of the Kavo Papa region were particularly hard hit by the disaster and that the situation in those villages remains as dire as it was in October. These villages have received virtually no money from the Greek government, the roads and other public spaces are still in a state of utter disrepair and many of the local businesses remain closed. The towns also experienced serious fl ooding again in January and February as a result of debris clogging up rivers that fl ow in those towns. Of particular concern is the fact that Karkinagri’s sewage system was torn up in the storm and has yet to be repaired, which poses a serious health con-cern for area residents. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported that he had spoken with Foundation Director Nikita Tripodis about the request and that Foun-dation Director Nikitas Tripodis asked that the Supreme Lodge forward the request for assistance to the Founda-tion for consideration. Supreme Lodge offi cers expressed

hope that the Foundation would be able to take actions by collecting donations from members of the Brother-hood and/or by making a donation from the Foundation’s funds. Supreme Secretary E. Terry Platis indicated that she would forward the request to the Foundation.

Hellenic Foundation: Supreme Secretary E. Terry Platis reported on a request that the Brotherhood had received from the Hellenic Foundation in Chicago. The Hellenic Foundation is a not-for-profi t service organization that is trying to raise money for its Psychotherapy Program by participating as a charity in the Chicago marathon which will be held on October 9, 2011. The Hellenic Founda-tion is asking for the Brotherhood’s assistance in encour-aging people to either sponsor a runner in the marathon or run in the marathon on behalf of the Hellenic Founda-tion. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis sug-gested that the Hellenic Foundation’s request be posted to the Brotherhood’s website so that any member of the Brotherhood interested in donating money or participat-ing in the marathon could contact the Hellenic Founda-tion directly.

VII. Supreme Convention Report

Detroit: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis re-ported that the Spanos/Areti chapter contributed $14,584 of its Convention proceeds to the Foundation.

Los Angeles: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamiha-lis reported that he recently attended a meeting with the Oinoe chapter in Los Angeles and that the chapter was very enthusiastic about hosting the 2011 Supreme Con-vention. He reported that he had the opportunity to tour the Beverly Hills Hilton, were the Convention will be held, and that the facilities were beautiful and the Oinoe chapter had many great activities planned for the week-end, including a “red carpet” banquet. He also urged people to make reservations for hotel rooms as soon as possible as already over 50% of the hotel rooms reserved for the Convention have been booked.

Myrtle Beach: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamiha-lis reported that the Supreme Lodge had the opportunity to tour the Kingston Plantation facilities in Myrtle Beach, the location of the 2012 Supreme Convention, during the recent Supreme Lodge meeting in Wilmington. He reported that the facilities at Kingston Plantation were beautiful and that many improvements had been made to the facilities since the last Convention in Myrtle Beach, including the addition of the Royal Palms tower and a new ballroom. Supreme Counselor James Lakerdas con-fi rmed that the terms of the hotel contract for the Conven-tion had been fi nalized.

VIII. Foundation Update

Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis provided

meeting attendees with an update of Foundation mat-ters that he had received from Foundation Chairman Gus Yiakas. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported that the Foundation is in the process of fi nalizing a settlement with respect to the litigation related to the Souroumanis estate. He also reported that the Foundation is continuing to have diffi culties in its dealings with PNC bank, the most recent issue being that PNC had “mis-placed” several donations made to the Foundation. PNC found the donations approximately a month later, but the Foundation has put PNC on notice that it is dissatisfi ed with PNC’s service. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pas-amihalis also reported on the status of the request from Mr. Skaros, the former head of the hospital in Ikaria, that the Foundation/Brotherhood raise funds to purchase a CT scanner for the hospital in Ikaria. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis noted that the Foundation has not yet had a chance to address this request as a result of the Souroumanis litigation and issues with PNC bank, although Foundation Chairman Gus Yiakas was hopeful that an effort would be made later this year to raise funds for purchase of the CT scanner.

IX. Committee Reports

Icarian Cookbook: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pas-amihalis commended the Icarian Cookbook committee, co-chaired by Jacqueline Moraitis and Tim Leakas, on their superb effort on the cookbook. Jacqueline Moraitis reported that sales of the fi rst printing of the cookbook had gone very well so far and that almost all of the 440 cookbooks that were printed had been sold. The cookbooks are priced at $20/cookbook and she expects to make a second order for printing soon. Jacqueline Moraitis also raised the issue that many of the checks she had received were made out to “Pan-Icarian Cookbook.” Discussion followed as to how to address the issue, including possibly creating a DBA for the name “Pan-Icarian Cookbook” to facilitate deposits into the Brother-hood’s bank account.

Youth Committee/Convention: Supreme President E. Terry Platis read aloud Past Supreme President George G. Horiates’ request for an additional $2,200 from the Su-preme Lodge for this year’s annual youth conference that will be held April 1-3, 2011 in Atlantic City, New Jersey and will be hosted by the Atheras chapter. In his request, Past Supreme President George G. Horiates noted that the Foundation was providing the Atheras chapter with $3,000, but that such funds were enough only to cover the cost of attending the Hermes Expo banquet. The Atheras chapter would be spending approximately $2,000 to cover the cost of transportation to and from Atlantic City during that weekend and for the Friday night dance, and is requesting that the Supreme Lodge give the Ath-eras chapter $2,200 to cover the host of the hotel rooms

for the weekend. A meeting attendee raised the question of whether there was any evaluation criteria in place to measure success of the youth conference and a discussion regarding the topic ensued. Following the discussion, Supreme Counselor James Lakerdas made a motion to approve giving the Atheras chapter $2,200 to pay for the cost of the hotel for the youth conference. The motion was seconded by District Governor Paul Collaros and was unanimously approved by all Supreme Lodge of-fi cers in attendance.

Constitution/By-Laws: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported that the process of updating the Brotherhood’s Constitution and By-Laws is continuing. He hopes that the updated version will be ready for distri-bution this spring.

2012 Celebration: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pas-amihalis did not have anything new to report with respect to the proposed centennial celebration in Ikaria but noted that he hoped that Supreme Lodge members would be able to attend the festivities.

Membership: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported that the Brotherhood has 117 members paid to date (the 77 members reported by Supreme Treasurer George Paralemos plus an additional 40 members of the Atheras chapter whose per capita dues have not yet been deposited). He noted that chapters have been paying per capita dues later and later each year and stressed the im-portance of pushing chapters to get their per capita dues in as early as possible.

X. Old Business

Offi cer Insurance: Supreme Counselor James Lakerdas suggested that the Brotherhood wait for the litigation re-lated to the Souroumanis estate be settled and dismissed before purchasing D&O insurance, as being involved in pending litigation has a negative effect on insurance

premiums. Other Supreme Lodge offi cers were in agree-ment that it would be prudent to wait for the Sourouma-nis litigation to be settled and dismissed prior to obtain-ing D&O insurance.

Chapter Best Practice Survey: Supreme President Niko-laos J. Pasamihalis reported on his initiative to create a survey that is designed to collect “best practices” infor-mation from existing chapters, and he hopes to send out the survey to chapters within the next month.

Convention Database: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported that Supreme Vice President George N. Koklanaris is spearheading an effort to cre-ate a database that will capture certain information from

past Supreme Conventions. The goal of the database is to provide chapters that are hosting, or are considering hosting, a Supreme Convention with historical data (e.g., information re room counts, banquet fi gures, etc.) that could be useful for planning future Conventions.

XI. New Business

Ikaria Magazine: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasami-halis reported on Ikaria magazine editor Niki Salame’s request that the Supreme Lodge reimburse her for the purchase of Adobe Create Suite 5 software for the Ikaria magazine, with an estimated cost of $1,239. He noted that the Adobe Creative Suite 5 software is necessary for the magazine editor to be able to digitally create the magazine, and it was lost when her computer crashed. District Governor Damainos Skaros motioned to approve reimbursing Niki Salame for the purchase of the Adobe Create Suite 5 (it being understood that the software would be the property of the Brotherhood). The motion was seconded by Supreme Counselor James Lakerdas and was unanimously approved by all Supreme Lodge offi cers in attendance. There was also discussion of

whether the Foundation should bear a portion of the cost of the new software since the Foundation and the Su-preme Lodge share the costs associated with the Ikaria magazine, and the Supreme Lodge will consider whether to ask the Foundation to reimburse it for their proportion-ate share of the cost of the software at the next Conven-tion.

Ikaria Website E-Commerce Proposal: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported on a proposal from Bay-walk Web Development to add e-commerce functionality to the Brotherhood’s website. The proposed e-commerce functions would allow people to make donations to the Foundation by credit card through the Brotherhood’s website, as well as allow people to purchase merchandise (e.g., the cookbook, the puzzle, etc.) through the website. The cost of setting up the e-commerce functions would be $995, although there would be additional transaction fees involved. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasami-halis indicated that the Foundation has not expressed a willingness to pay for any portion of the expenses associ-ated with adding e-commerce functions. A discussion followed regarding questions that Supreme Lodge mem-bers had about the proposal. Certain offi cers expressed concern at the lack of information about maintenance and/or transaction fees that would be incurred. In addi-tion, several offi cers thought that the Foundation should have to bear all or a substantial portion of the expense, as the Foundation potentially had much more to gain from this added functionality than the Brotherhood. The Supreme Lodge offi cers in attendance agreed to table this request until more information was available regarding the magnitude of the maintenance and/or transaction fees that would be incurred.

Pan-Icarian Banner Project: Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis reported on a new initiative to create a banner for the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood. He noted that while many chapters have their own banner/fl ag, the Brotherhood does not have a banner/fl ag at the national level (the banner on display at the Supreme Convention does not contain the Brotherhood’s emblem). Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis has begun looking into the cost of creating a banner and has been in contact with a banner and fl ag-making company in Philadelphia. He estimated that the cost of an 8’ x 3’ banner or fl ag (with either a vertical or horizontal orientation) would be ap-proximately $230-740, depending on the type and quality of printing/application used, and that this type of banner should last for many (upwards of 60) years. Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis will continue to evalu-ate proposals and hopes to have a more concrete proposal at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

Next, Aristotle Hutras, president of the Columbus chap-ter, reported to all meeting attendees that the Columbus

chapter planned to hold its second annual golf outing this coming summer and planned to donate $500 of the proceeds from the golf outing to the Foundation’s schol-arship fund.

XII. Good of the Order

Icaros 100 Contest: The goal of the contest is to have 100 Icaros statues on display at the 2011 and 2012 Su-preme Conventions. All members of the Brotherhood are encouraged to participate. Participants must use a standard art mannequin as the foundation for the statue, but otherwise the sky is the limit as to how people choose to decorate them.

Event Announcements: The Icaros Chapter Memorial Day Mini Convention will be held May 28-29 in Pitts-burgh, Pennsylvania.

XIII. Meeting Adjourned

During the April 1st weekend, Atheras Chapter 12 hosted the Pan-Icarian Youth Conference here in Philadelphia and in Atlantic City, NJ.

The Chapter welcomed twelve delegates from PIB Chap-ters in Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland and New York. Ath-eras held a Fri-day night recep-tion to welcome its guests. After greetings and in-troductions, the group enjoyed an appetizing dinner prepared by the Gateway Diner. Conversations and stories followed as we got to know each other. Later, the house lights dimmed as multi-

colored lasers and fog machines took over to transform the Clubhouse atmosphere. Atheras’ favorite DJ Kappa (aka Anthony Kotsedakis) played great music and got everyone dancing to the fi rst of many Ikariotiko dances of the evening.

On Saturday April 2nd, Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis and Chapter President James Houtridis led the delegates onto a limo bus for the trip into Atlantic City and the 20th Annual Hermes Expo at the Tropicana Hotel. The well-attended Expo was replete with many Greek–American businesspersons and Greek centric

exhibitors. Attendees to the Expo come from across the US and Europe.

Though timely scheduling seemed to be lacking, the highlight event of our day, the Young Profession-

als Seminar did fi nally started. The Pan-Icarian Youth Delegates squeezed into a large board-room with other young people and guests to hear the noted speakers and their presentations. The presenters included Dr. Spiro Spireas, President of Sigma Pharma; US Congressman John Sarbanes; Aris Melissaratos, As-sistant to the Dean of John Hopkins

University; Nick Larigakis, Executive

Director of the American Hellenic Institute; and Yiannis Sianis of the fi rm Calamos Investments.

Each speaker gave an autobiographical account of their life outlining their infl uences and the select choices they made that led them through their success-ful careers. In life, Dr. Spireas noted, there are ‘winners, losers and everybody else’ – a metaphor for people who will strive for success, those who give up on themselves and those who are apathetic. At times, the accounts of numerous scientifi c patents held, mil-lions of dollars made, and company shares traded were self-aggrandizing but a few universal messages seemed to become clear to the delegates. These messages were work hard, have passion for what you do, respect others & their abilities, and give generously back to the com-munity. Greek parents and grandparents across the world

have given this timeless advice to their descendants. Fol-lowing these principles will bring success and elevate our Youth to ‘Winners’.

Hermes Expo founder, Paul Kotrotsios, Editor of the Hel-lenic News of America summed up the seminar. He noted that this venue and its connections to such distinguished Greek-American Leaders could indeed inspire our Youth and afford them the chance to see the possibilities of what they can do.

Our PIB delegates later went to the Hermes Expo Awards Dinner, enjoyed the area entertainments and closed out the evening dancing at the neighboring Caesar’s Casino stylish nightclub, Dusk. Courtesy of an irritated bus driver who was not partial to the concept of Ikarian time, the group had a dizzying return trip to the hotel in Cherry Hill. Laughter and singing, however, kept their spirits high.

I personally wanted to extend a thank you for granting the Pan-Icarian Scholarship to me this academic school year (2010-2011). This scholarship really plays a vital role in contributing to my out of state college tuition expenses. With this generous contribution I have the ability to further my educational career and activities.I am a well standing member of Ohio University’s Adver-tising Club and Communications Club. Within these clubs I am offered great opportunities and hands on experience credited for my Organizational Communications major. This

In February, the Akron Chapter hosted our annual mem-bership luncheon. The event is our chance to thank mem-bers for their efforts and participation from the previous year and to "kick-off" the upcoming year. Greetings from Cleveland to all our Pan-Icarian Brothers and Sisters and Happy Spring to all! It’s been a long, rough winter and a very wet spring as well this year, but that hasn’t stopped us from having fun! We continue to meet on the last Saturday of every month at our hall.

Super Bowl SundayWe “kicked off” our new year with our annual Super Bowl Party at the hall. Members watched the game, played some cards and enjoyed some pizza and company.

Greek Independence Day Parade and Ikarian DanceAs usual, the Ikarians had the biggest, best fl oat at the pa-rade! Ikaros once again came to help us celebrate Greek Independence Day and was the highlight of our fl oat. We fi lled the air with Roussos violi and although it was bitter cold, we still had a great turnout.

The same day, we held our Annual Independence Day Glendi at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Party Center. The weather was beautiful for the golf outing on Saturday, May 28, and there was a full house with plenty of kefi for the dance on Sunday, May 29, where the band Ikaros kept everyone on the fl oor until 3:00am!

The 7th annual wiffl eball tournament was a very close game 16-15. Team Dancing Ikarian Katsikes just couldn’t prevail in the bottom of the 9th. Team Flight of Ikaros played a strong defense and allowed their opponents nothing, emerging victorious. Flight of Ikaros struck out 2 and made the Dancing Ikarian Katsikes pop up a foul ball giving them the 3rd out. The MVP was Teddy Xenakis who even though he arrived late to the game, hit a grand slam and a home run, both during crucial times of the game. Both were hit off of pitcher George Mavrogeo-ris’ hand.

Spring / Summer fever has caught the air. In February our St. Nicholas Dance Group competed in the Hellenic Dance Festival where they won awards for both singing and dancing. The group was led by their teacher Zaha-roula Katsikis.

In March we had our Spring Get Together at the home of George & Cindy Brunetti. April we saw Easter. Many of they young Ikarian girls were Mirofores at the Epitafi o Service. The month of May was a busy one. We had our 19th Annual St. Nicholas Festival where many of our Ikarians came out to eat, cook, serve and dance.

Atheras hopes everyone is enjoying a great summer. We have had an eventful past few months. In February, the Clubhouse was full as usual with members coming to watch the big game and sample all the delectable types of fresh hoagies at our Superbowl Fundraiser. The Atheras Offi cers took and relayed orders to our master sandwich makers Dimitrios Mantagas and Evangelos Tsarnas. As the game played out, the hoagies sold out and the Chapter benefi tted.

In March, we had a well-attended Icarian Dance at St. Thomas and later in the month had a large turnout for our Greek Independence Day Parade. On what was a very beautiful day, we loaded our yellow school bus with grandparents, parents, kids and strollers to make the short

Atheras was happy to have hosted this year’s PIB Youth Convention in April. We welcomed our guests with a Friday Night ‘Spring Break Party’ at the Clubhouse. Ath-eras Youth joined the delegates for the reception. While all enjoyed the good conversations, the party slipped into the early morning hours. The guests were then guided safely to their nearby hotel to get some rest for the next day’s events.

On Saturday, we toured the exhibits at the 20th Annual Hermes Expo and attended the Young Professionals Seminar. Later that evening, we all went to the Hermes Expo Awards Dinner. The delegates then closed the eve-ning at a nearby Caesar’s nightclub. The next morning, Atheras Offi cers wished the delegates a good journey and saw everyone off.

As the Youth Conference played out across the weekend, the Atheras Offi cers were dealing with somber circum-stances. Longtime Chapter member George A. Horiates passed away that Saturday evening. George was the uncle of many of the Offi cers and a stalwart member of Atheras. He had served eight terms as Chapter President, the most in our 72-year history. George also served as District 1 Governor on the PIB Supreme Lodge. Though his contributions and council will be absent from us, his role as husband, father, brother and friend will long be remembered. He will be missed.

Future events for the Chapter will include our annual summer picnic and a relaxing canoe trip. We are also planning for the 20th Anniversary of our Clubhouse in September. Our members hope to see everyone at the Convention in Los Angeles and send their best wishes.

Zacharias V. Horiatis, son of Vasilis and Lemonia Horiatis, and Irene Koutoufaris, daugh-ter of Kostantino and Sophia Koutoufaris, were married last summer on July 31, 2010 at Agia Marina in Arethousa, Ikaria. Being followed by her friends and family in traditional wedding song, the bride walked from her late grandpar-ent’s house to meet the groom and guests at the church. The cere-mony was followed by a moving toast by the groom in honor of his late uncle, and a traditional Ikario-tiko glendi, in which everyone enjoyed a romantic night fi lled with fantastic local food, wine, and music until the morning hours. We miss you Theio Giorgo!

We were all very excited to host our Supreme President Nikolaos J. Pasamihalis in January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We meet with President Nikolaos and District 5 Governor Athena Tsarnas Pugliese. We gave them a tour of the facilities, and then meet for a meeting in the Circa 55 Restaurant at the hotel, to go over all of the specifi c preparations that chapter Oinoe has been putting together for the past year and 1/2. All of our dedicated members have been working hard to show you all a wonderful time

when you come to Sunny Southern Califor-nia. We can’t wait to see you all here.

Demi Ann Dunkle (Pardos), daughter of Mindy Kay Dunkle and George Pardos, graduated from Westland/Southwestern Career Academy on May 29, 2011. Demi pursued a course of study in Interactive Media Design at the Career Academy. She was on the Honor Roll all four years and was active in the Marching and Symphonic Bands, Choir, Drama Club and Thespians. During her junior year she placed second on the Busi-ness Professionals of America Parliamentary Procedure Team and second on the Global Marketing Team. During her senior year she placed third on the Business Professionals of America Broadcasting Team. Also during her senior year, she designed the cover for the Ikarian Cook Book “Live Long, Eat Ikarian”. Demi has been accepted at Shawnee State University and plans to pursue a degree in International Relations with a minor in Communications.Her proud grandfather is Christos Pardos of Columbus, Ohio and Athens, Greece. Christos was born in Tsoure-tho, Ikaria.

Matthew Mercier is graduating from Worthington Kil-bourne High School in June 2011. Matt plans on attend-

ing Columbus State Community College in the fall and then onto the Ohio State University to pursue a career in Computer Science (Video Game Design). Matt is the son of Ian and Nickie Mercier and the

Greetings Brothers and Sisters from Helios Chapter 19, Clearwater Florida.

We are very much looking forward to attending our Brotherhoods annual Convention in Beverly Hills, Cali-fornia and wish them much success. It’s been a long time coming.

The Helios Chapter held our annual Winter Glendi on February 19th. The dance was a success thanks to Dr. Stanton and Anna Tripodis and their great committee. It was a job well done and true Ikarian spirit was shared with all. Many out-of-towners came down from colder temps to enjoy our dance and some Florida sunshine.

On March 27, Chapter Helios participated in the Greek Independence Day in Tarpon Springs, FL. Many mem-bers showed up to march or ride on the fl oat. It was a beautiful, sunny Florida day and we all enjoyed sharing in the spirit of our Independence.

The Helios Chapter Leski has the roof on and progress is being made. Members are all working to make it comes together and to meet our goal. Thanks to those who have helped! Our chapter will soon have a 501-3c tax status and the makings of a community cultural center.

Congratulations to a very special member who is the fi rst Greek woman to climb and summit Mt. Everest! Pamela Pappas, we salute you for this incredible feat. Pam is for-merly from Verona, PA and currently lives in Tampa. See the back section for more on Pam’s amazing adventures.

Greetings from Kavo-Papas,

It is sad to announce the passing of one of our own, a longtime Brother, Mr. George Sam Saphos, on January 30th of this year. George served as President of our chapter and was also affi liated with AHEPA.Mr. Saphos was born in Galveston, Texas and served in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he majored in electrical engineering as well as playing for the Pan-thers football team. He lived in Baytown, Texas and is survived by his beauti-ful and devoted wife of 47 years, Maria Lardas Saphos. He also leaves behind his caring and loving family:daughter Isabel and husband Lee Mitchell and their sons George and Travis, son Alex and wife Melissa and their son Christopher, son Michael and wife Michelle and their son who will arrive in July of this year. He will be given the name George, after his Papou.George is also survived by his sister Maria and her hus-band George Tsounos and many loving family members and friends, near and far.

The Nisos Ikaria chapter has been busy celebrating the baptisms of several of our newest members.

Phil and Stacey Moss’ grandson, Chadwick Philemon Moss, graduated from St. John’s School this year. Chad-wick will be attending Purdue University this fall.

The Mitchell boys, George and Travis as well as Melissa and Alex’s son, Christopher will be traveling to Florida to continue their athletic quest for baseball excellence! Go boys!

Other club news includes a recent meeting to discuss chapter revenues, new membership goals, scheduling offi cer elections, and other chapter business. We will be gathering again in a few months to continue our goal set-ting and prioritize the fall schedule.

Most of all, lets take this time of year, when so many patriotic holidays showcase the red white and blue of the American Flag and remember the sacrifi ces of our family, friends, and neighbors, and the gifts they gave for our freedom. Take the time this summer to appreciate all that God has given to our lives and remember our fellow brethren.

Greetings to all Ikarians from Montreal Chapter #22

This year of 2011 has been so far quite eventful for our Chapter. Here are some of our recently celebrated events.

We began this year’s events with the 25th of March Parade which took place on March 27th. On this day we celebrated our Greek Independence with our annual celebratory commemorative parade as we marched along proudly on the designated Greek town street of Jean-Talon.

Then on Sunday April 3rd, as a seasonal ritual in Quebec, we gathered at our annual traditional Cabane a Sucre (Sugar Shack) in a rural village to feast on the delicious traditional, delicacies which consist of: hot rolls, pea soup, regular and smoked ham, omelette, bacon rinds,

roast potatoes, homemade baked beans and followed by the maple-sweetened desserts like pancakes, maple sugar tarts, homemade donuts all made with the pure maple syrup of the thousands of maple trees surrounding the village.

On Sunday May 29th, we gathered at Casa Grecque res-taurant to celebrate our members who are Ikarian Moth-ers and Ikarian Fathers by offering them a complimentary Mother’s day & Fathers Day dinner event. In company of delicious food, abundant wine and each other, a grand time was had by all and all the Mothers & Fathers were deeply appreciative of the recognition.

On Sunday May 22nd, we celebrated the happy occasion of the baptism of Theodore Spiropou-los, son of John Spi-ropoulos and Nafsika Antypas (daughter of Militadis Antypas and Frosso Antypas (Safos). Congratulations to the proud parents, na sas zisei and may he always be blessed!

wish you all a most pleasant and restful summer vacation and for those of you who will be lucky enough to visit our Ikarian homeland, may you enjoy the Mediterranean sun and sea and “Kali Antamosi” at the upcoming Oinoe convention in California!

Προσφατα γιορτασαμε πολλες διαφορες εκδηλωσεις με τα μελοι μας, οι οποιες ητανε ως εξης:

Την Κυριακη 27 Μαρτιου γιορτασαμε την απελευθέρωση της Πατρίδας μας του 1821 με την Εθνικη Παρελαση στην ελληνική οδό της “Jean Talon” οπου παρελασανε εκατονταδες ελληνοπουλα υπερηφανα για την καταγωγη τους.

Στης 3 Απρίλιου έγινε η καθιερωμένη μας εκδρομή σε ένα μικρό χωριό του Κεμπέκ, φημισμένο για τα δέντρα (Πλατάνια) του από τα οποία προέρχεται το γνήσιο σιρόπι του Καναδά. Μαζευτήκαμε να απολαύουμε λιχουδιές όπως ζεστά ψωμιά, ρεβιθόσουπα, καπνιστό ζαμπόν, μπέικον, ομελέτες, πατάτες, και για επιδόρπιο τα φημισμένα γλυκά, όπως τις κρέπες, τις ταρτελέτες, και οι σπιτίσιοι λουκουμάδες, όλα περιχυμένα με το ζεστό και γνήσιο γλυκό σιρόπι που προέρχεται από τα χίλια δέντρα που περιτριγυρίζουν το χωριό.

Στις 29 Μάιου, γιορτάσαμε στο εστιατόριο Casa Grecque, τις μητέρες μας και τους πατερες μας, με ένα τιμητικό γεύμα δωρεάν για τα μελή μας και με με καλή παρέα και πλούσιο φαγοπότι περάσαμε ενα θαυμάσιο απογευμα.

Ζησαμε και αλλες ευχαριστες στιγμες ,οπως στης 22 Μαιου οπου ο Γιαννης Σπιροπουλος και η Ναυσικα Αντυπα (κορη του Μιλτιαδη Αντυπα και Φροσως Αντυπας (το γενος Σαφο) βαγτισαν τον γιο τους Θεωδορο. Να σας Ζησει το Νεοφωτιστο!

Αυτά ήταν τα πρόσφατα νέα του τμήματός μας, σας εύχομαι ένα ωραίο και ξεκούραστο καλοκαιράκι, και καλή αντάμωση στο συνεδριο του Τμημα 14 Οινοιε στην Καλιφορνια!

was recently crowned Georgia National Teenager. National Teenager is a scholarship pag-eant that rewards achievement in community service, academ-ics and personal interviews. Cara will compete this summer in Miami Florida in the Na-tional Teenager pageant. Good Luck Cara!On a sad note we lost two long-time members of our chapter this year, Eva Skandalakis and Vicki Parianos. We will miss them both dearly.We hope you all have a wonder-ful summer and hope to see you in California at the convention.

Hello fellow Ikarians from the sunny and sometimes stormy south.The spring meeting of Langada chapter was held at the cafenion of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The meeting was well attended and at that time we elected new chapter offi cers; Chris Tripodis-president Aristotle Parianos-vice president, Bill Androutsopoulos-treasurer, Tina Parianos-secretary. One of the topics discussed were possibly submitting a bid for an upcoming convention.

The Drakanon Chapter #24 continued it regular activities for 2011. We began by electing the new 2011 offi cers, and we then planned several activities for Spring 2011. While “Old Man Winter” did everything to keep our club apart, we met at the Panera Bread Factory to decide which event took preference over the other.However, when you plan for the best to happen, events can change plans on the spot. In early March, we lost a very dear friend and brother. Nick Hazinakis, Past President and Co-creator of the Drakanon chapter went to sleep with our lord. Nick was a good man who deeply believed in the activities of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood. He met with the Supreme Lodge in the 1990’s to help them understand why a group of Parma, Ohio Icarians wished to establish their own club in Par-ma. Through Nick’s and other Icarians efforts, the Parma Drakanon Chapter was created. Nick was a true Icarian in all respects, and he is being missed by all members of the Drakanon Chapter. Lynn Hazinakis, Nick’s wife, and her children in our thoughts daily and every time we meet. A copy of the obituary follows: NICK HAZINAKIS, 80. Our offi cers have served the club in various capacities over the years and we continue to plan events for our club to stay committed to the members of the Drakanon Chapter.For our April meeting, we addressed the social needs of the club. Several members got together for a dinner out without discussing any business of the club. It was purely a social event. At the April meeting we laid plan for our May 15th Casino trip. Plans for a summer Cleve-land Indians game b fi nalized. The date is not set, but the interest by our members force us to schedule more than one game to attend.On May 15th, many members went to the West Virginia Casino. Several of our members were able to attend Chapter Pharos’ annual Independence Day Dance in Cleve-land, OH and Chapter Icaros’ mini convention Memorial Day dance in Pitts-burgh, PA. Both chapters are to be commended for hosting such enjoyable events.

To celebrate Easter 2011 our chapter hosted the fourth annual after Pas-cha party at the Hellenic Orthodox Church Of the Annunciation in Buffalo, NY. The Μαγειρίτσα was dished out as part of an after church meal in the community center for the thankful parishioners who stayed late into the night.

The chapter also held an Easter fundraiser by raffl ing off a 4 ft. Chocolate Bunny from Buffalo’s amazing Antoinette’s Chocolates.

This year also marked the Church’s 34th Annual Greek Festival. As usual, many Chapter members volunteered their time and talents and worked over the weekend to support our beautiful church.

We wish you all a safe and sunny summer and look for-ward to seeing you all at this year’s national convention in LA!

IN MEMORY OFTribute to My Father

Stavros (Steve) Koutis, my father and friend, passed away on January 28, 2011, eight days after his 102nd birthday.

Stravos was born in Kossikia, Ikaria, on January 20, 1909 to Maria Tripodis and Ioannis Koutis.

My father grew up on the island and he dreamed of becoming a school teacher; however, poverty, wars and family conditions altered his plans. Instead, he found himself as a young child sailor in “kaikia”(sailboats) traveling the Aegean, transporting coal.

Before the outbreak of World War II, he met Polyxeni Tsakalia, a brunette beauty from Dafni, and they were married in 1938. They had four children, John Koutis, Toula Koutis Balanis, Mary Koutis El Raheb, and Vic-toria Koutis Apostolakis. In order to support his family, my father became a merchant marine sailor, while my mother, not only had the task of raising the children, but also contributed to the family fi nances with her expertise as a talented dressmaker.

After jumping ship in the U.S. in the early 1950’s, Stavros lived here for nearly ten years. He worked in the painting industry in Cleveland, Chicago, and other major cities, braving tall buildings and bridges as well as the immigration that was in pursuit of him. In the mid 1960’s, his dream to become an American citizen came true, after my brother Johnny, who was already legally in the U.S., sponsored the family. My mother and father relocated to Southern California in 1966 and we girls fol-lowed the next year.

When my father retired, he devoted his time to garden-ing, making bread and, along with my mother, babysit-ting their grandchildren. They were the most loved Pap-

pou and Yiayia any family could have. In the summers, they travelled to Greece and spent most of their time in Ikaria, where they restored the family home in Kossikia.

After my mother’s death in 1997, my father chose to continue to live in his South Pasadena home. His daily routine was to tend to his garden. He grew tasty peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and lots more wonderful vegetables and fruits. He was so proud of his plants and nourished them like children. Stavros loved to talk about how the plants were growing, how many fruits they produced and how he used them in his cooking, another one of his favorite hobbies. If he was not gardening he was exercis-ing on his rowing exercise machine, doing a thousand repetitions at age 100 plus, or he would walk several blocks to the house of his friends Nikolas and Stella Tri-podis. They had Greek coffee and talked about Ikarians, politics, and history, subjects which my father loved and was very knowledgeable about. He knew the origins of his own family and practically every Ikarian family dat-ing all the way back to 1600.

Stavros had an extraordinary memory and remembered everything from his childhood through his life, an incred-ible feat to have 102 years worth of memories and learn-ing! His earliest memory being at two years old when he witnessed the death of his grandmother.

Once, I asked him to name the people in a small pho-tograph taken in the 1930’s at a panigyri, he fi rst com-plained that I never asked him when he was able to see; (now suffering from macular degeneration, his vision was hazy but not his memory). He then told me that the photograph was taken in 1932 in the morning after the panigyri in Petropouli and he named each person and which position they had in the photo. Genealogy, history, and geography were his passion; he read facts from the almanac until he lost his vision at about age 90.

His thirst for knowledge and traveling never diminished. At age 92, we traveled to Australia, the only country he did not visit in his sailor years. Every summer, we went to Greece, and were making plans for this summer as well.

My father was a simple man of the sea and the earth and enjoyed both to the fullest. Devoted to his family, proud of his children and grandchildren we are going to miss this gentle man, this loving father, our source of history of all Ikarian ancestry, cultural and history, and of all the knowledge he accumulated in 102 years and eight days.

Aera sta Pania sou Patera. You will live in our hearts.

IN MEMORY OFGeorge Sam Saphos George Sam Saphos, 85, of Baytown, TX went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 30, 2011. He was born in Galveston, TX on September 7, 1925. George served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was a graduate of the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh where he majored in electrical engineer-ing and was on the PITT football team. George was very proud of not only his Greek heritage, but also of his IKARIAN background. In 1944, while on furlough, George attended an Ikarian Convention in Youngstown, Ohio. The following year, he joined the Pittsburgh chapter.

Committed to his Ikarian heritage, family, and friends, he was always willing to lend a supportive hand whether it meant holding an offi ce or lending fi nancial support. When the Pittsburgh chapter was in fi nancial trouble, the president was asking for help and George anonymously and unselfi shly wrote a check to cover the insurance. Along with a few others, he then helped to start the Ikarian foundation which would help Greeks in need of fi nancial assistance.

When the Houston Chapter started in 1984, George served as the fi rst president of the Kavo Papas Chapter. He went to go on and serve as President an additional three times as well as various other offi ces. In addition to his local chapter accolades, he also held the title of the national organization’s oldest, longest-standing member. In addition to the Ikarian organization, he was also a member AHEPA, the American legion, and was a Master Electrician.

While on vacation in Ikaria, George met and fell in love with his wife, Maria Lardas. They were married in Ikaria in 1964 and returned to the United States where they began their life in Maryland before moving to Pittsburgh where they began their family with daughter, Isabel and son Alex. While in Pittsburgh, George worked as an engineer for Sargent Electric before taking an opportu-nity to transfer to Houston with the company where they settled in Baytown and had their son, Mike.

George and Maria were active parents and members of the Baytown community. They played for many years at the Baytown Bowling league and were avid golfers and members of the Goose Creek Country Club.

After years with Sargent Electric and then retiring from Merit Electric, he and Maria enjoyed attending social functions and events that their grandsons were a part of. Georges’ favorite pastime was watching George, Chris-topher, and Travis play baseball and he was a constant fan at the games. Even once his health began to decline, Papou could be seen behind home plate in his wheelchair with oxygen tank in tow. Recently, George was excited to hear the news that he would have a new grandson to dote over when son Mike and wife Michelle announced that they were expecting a baby boy. Unfortunately, George will not meet his new grandson, but was honored that the baby will carry his name. The family will welcome baby George this summer.

The family would like to express gratitude for everyone’s love and support during this time of loss.

George A. Horiates of Pennsauken, NJ passed away on April 2, 2011. He was 75 years old. Born in 1935 in the

village of Perdiki, on the island of Ikaria in Greece to the late Angelo G. and Stama-toula Horiates. Beloved hus-band to Stav-roula Horiates. Devoted father of Angelo G., Nicholas

G., and Past Supreme President George G. Horiates. He honorably served in the United States Army as a member of the elite US Rangers, Specialist 4th Class. He retired from RCA with over 40 years of service. George was an active member of Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church of Cherry Hill NJ, having served over twenty years on the Parish Council, many as an offi cer. He was a long time member of the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of America (Ath-eras, Chapter 12) having served as Chapter President and as a Supreme Lodge offi cer; A member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) Camden Chapter 69 and an advisor to its junior order, the Sons of Peri-cles. George was predeceased by his sister Irene Poulos. He is survived by his wife, Stavroula (nee Pasamihalis); his sons Angelo G. (Mary) of Holly Ridge NC, Nicholas G. (Colleen) of Cherry Hill NJ, and George G. (Lisa) of Moorestown NJ; and his grandchildren Julia, George A., Charles, Kathryn, Zachary, Stavroula, and George T. He is also survived by brothers Elias, Nicola, Dimitrios, An-gelo Jr., Zachary; and sisters Sophia Frangos and Georgia Frangos; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.George was a 50 plus year member of Chapter Atheras of the Pan Icarian Brotherhood. He served as President of the chapter for many years, spent his summers in Ikaria and always found time to take his family and attend our national conventions where he was always a delegate.The family thanks the many friends and relatives that traveled long distances to attend services.

Artemis John Kratsas

Artemis John Kratsas, 90 of Lower Wind-sor Township, PA, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her husband, four children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Kratsas was born in Arley, Alabama on December 24, 1920. She met her husband John while he was stationed at Fort McClel-land Alabama. They married prior to John Kratsas being sent to the European Theater during WWII. John, who is a native of Chrysostomos, Ikaria immigrated to the US in 1930. Upon John’s release from a German POW camp, he reunited with Artemis and established residence in Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. Kratsas observed their 67th wedding anniversary on January 9, 2011. The daughter of the late James and Lillian (Rooks) Huffstutler, Artemis taught school in Alabama while her husband served in the US Army. Mrs. Kratsas was a member of the Greek Or-thodox Church of the Annunciation in York, OA for the past 6 years. She was also a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, PA. Artemis was involved in the Over 60 Club and the Philoptohos while a 60 year member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Aristotle and his wife Carol, and James Kratsas and his wife Celeine both of Florence, AL; two daughters, Alex-andria (Kratsas) Condemi and her husband of Wrights-ville, PA and Maria (Kratsas) Carrieri of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and three sisters, Essie Hill of Jasper, AL, Beatrice Anderson of Decatur, AL and Frances Murray of Tuscaloosa, AL.

A loving, generous and compassionate person with a tremendous sense of humor, Artemis saw only the best and most beautiful in those she met. A dedicated wife and loving mother, she taught her children honesty, courage and citizenship, traits that will always defi ne her and her memory.

Vickie Parianos (November 16, 1934 - May 28, 2011)

Mrs. Vickie Paria-nos, 76, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.

Mrs. Parianos was born Friday, November 16, 1934 in Arethousa on the Greek island of Ikaria. A resident of Youngsville, Vickie retired from Sears after fi fteen years of service as a seam-stress and salesperson.

Vickie loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. She was well known for her green thumb and skill with plants and fl owers as well as her talents as a seamstress. Vickie was a long-time member of the Pan-Icarian Brother-hood of America. Most of all, she adored her family and spending time with them. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed.

Vickie is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Mr. Stephen Parianos of Youngsville, LA; her four chil-dren, son Aristotle “Telie” Parianos and his wife, Tina of Cummings, GA and daughters Aristea Gwinn and her husband, Larry Jr. of Youngsville, LA, Marina Verbeke of Cummings, GA and Angie Fowler and her husband, Terry of Brunswick, OH; six grandchildren, Stephen Miller, Roxana Resnick and Jennifer Gwinn, all of Atlanta, GA, Steven Parianos and Nikolas Verbeke, both of Cum-mings, GA and Bradley Fowler of Brunswick, OH; one great-grandchild, Lucas Resnick, of Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents George Tsou-nos and the former Evangelia Tripodis, both of Arethou-sa, Ikaria, Greece; and her eight siblings.

The family wishes to thank Heart of Hospice in Lafayette for the compassionate care given to Vickie and her fam-ily.

In lieu of fl owers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Paria-nos name to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood of Americas scholarship program.

Angeline Papalas(September 6, 1914 to May 26, 2011)

Angeline Papalas lived 96 years. She was born dur-ing WWI and died while two wars waged in the Middle East. She leaves three children, three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. A tiny woman, not quite 5 feet tall, weighing less than100 pounds, Angie was a force to be reckoned with. She never minced her words. She fought loudly for whatever she believed in. One of her favorite causes was making sure that no one of Greek origin for-got the Greek language. Another one was to point out to whomever was listening that her village of origin, Evdi-los, Ikaria, was not to be overlooked. She perceived it as the most beautiful and graceful village on the island, and let everyone know it.. Pride and integrity were Angie's greatest assets. Angeline did not care whether people liked her. She cared whether she respected herself, which translated to perceiving her truth as absolute truth and always expressing that truth, no matter what the conse-quences may be.

Angeline leaves her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild a legacy and a challenge. Pride in their Greek and, specifi cally, Ikarian ancestry is the legacy. The challenge is more complicated. It involves being true to oneself no matter whether others like it or not. It requires commanding respect for their individuality. Life is less controversial for people who blend in with the masses, and interesting for a person who stands out. Angie defi -nitely stood out.

Her three children, Carol, Tony, and Kathy, may only hope to have inherited even a small part of Angeline's strength of character. As the eldest daughter, I learned my mother's lessons without realizing what I was learn-ing. She was a role model. Her fi erce personality turned out to be an object lesson in how not to allow others to walk all over me.

In her youth, my mother wanted to become a teacher. In-stead, she emigrated from Greece in 1930 and discovered that in the U.S., a country of vast wealth, poverty pre-vailed. She worked at her brother-in-law, Steve Kayafas' grocery store in New Kensington, PA, and never realized her career goal. She happily married my father, Con-stantine A. Papalas, in 1939 and had three children. In 1979, my mother was suddenly widowed and lived alone until October of 2010, which is another indication of her strength.

Mom was beautiful, sociable, animated, and truly alive even in old age. Whenever she came to visit me in Ari-zona, Angie went everywhere with me. My friends were impressed by her liveliness. They looked forward to see-ing her. In fact, their eyes lit up whenever I mentioned her at all. Mom was always the center of attention, and boy, did she love that! She was amazing!

I hope that my love and respect for my mother, Angie, is expressed eloquently enough so that it may be appreci-ated not only by her friends and relatives, but also by my mother, who is reading this in spirit.

The last time an Ikarian was this high, his wings melted. On May 13th Pamela Pappas completed her ascent to the peak of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, at 29,000 ft. She trained extensively, over the years, by climbing mountains on all seven continents including Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Aconcagua in South America. Pamela was part of a group of 13 climbers, PeakFreaks, who began their journey in April. Only 3 climbers of the original 13 made it to the summit. The perilous climb took more than 4 weeks mainly due to weather conditions and altitude acclimatization issues. The descent from the peak of Mount Everest, back to base camp, took about 10 days.

Background: Pamela is a native of Verona, Pennsylva-nia. Her grandparents, immigrated from Ikaria in the early 1900’s. Her grandfather, John Viores, was from Daphni and her grandmother, Vasiliki, was from Xyloser-ti/Chrysostomos. She is the daughter of Spiro and Geor-gia Pappas of Verona. Pamela, a Nuclear Pharmacist for Cardinal Health, currently resides in Tampa, Florida, and is a member of Helios Chapter, Clearwater.

TAMPA - Pamela Pappas can say she’s been on top of the world!

“You’re on top of everything,” said the 40-year-old nuclear pharmacist. “You can see the curvature of the Earth.”

Only a few thousand people can say they’ve climbed to the peak of massive Mount Everest. Last month the Bay Area resident added her name to that list.

After some serious extensive training and several weeks of getting used to the region’s altitude Pappas made it.

“It is so much between you and the mountain you just realize how much you have inside you,” Pappas said of her excursion.

The climb was a tall order – no pun intended.

Historians say approximately 200 people have died as they tried to make it to the pinnacle of Mt. Everest.

Pappas was the only female among her group of climbers to reach the top.

“At the high altitude you have to think so much about what you are doing,” she said. “You have to concentrate on every single clip as you go.”

On Saturday a contingent of her friends met her at Tampa International Airport to welcome her home.

“I am so excited and proud of her. I just get goose bumps,” said friend Mona Smith. “That’s really an ac-complishment. She trained so hard and worked so hard….I am very happy for her.”

Pappas took up mountain climbing four years ago. She is currently working towards her goal of climbing to top of seven of the tallest summits in the world.

Mt. Everest was number six and even though that feat is still fresh in her memory Pappas is already looking towards the future.

“When you climb it’s a monkey on your back,” Pappas says. “Now, I feel like I can climb whatever I want.”

The training for a climb is beyond intense. How do you typically prepare for a climb of this magnitude?

I’m always climbing continuously throughout the year, so I’m never in “couch potato” condition. That being said, I ramped up my Everest training to include intervals, weighted stair climbing and limited breathing exercises. Intervals are simply pushing your body at it’s max heart rate for about 1.5 to 2 minutes at a time by running on a tennis court or running fl ights of stairs or even doing leap frog jumps. I do as many intervals of this type as I can until I’m exhausted. At that point, I run 3 more if I can do it before getting too light headed to stand up. Weighted stair climbing is spending 1.5 hours on a stair climber carrying a 50 lbs barbell or a 70 lbs pack while wear-ing my climbing boots. I do limited breathing exercises by doing a moderate activity, like jumping rope. But, I breathe through a straw to increase my anaerobic endur-ance. This is something you need when you’re at high altitude breathing 1/3 of the oxygen that you have at sea level. It conditions your lungs and other organs to func-tion in a oxygen deprived environment.

How long were you on the mountain?

We landed in Lukla (eleva-tion 9000 ft.) on April 1st. Lukla is the town you fl y into on a small prop plane to begin your hike up the Khumbu valley. There are no motor-ized vehicles anywhere in the valley. The

hike up to base camp (elevation 18000 feet) through the valley takes about 8 days. We arrived in basecamp on April 9th. After 2 days of rest and acclimatization, we started doing some ice climbing and light hiking. Then we started going through the Khumbu icefall (the actual beginning of the climb) for practice and more acclima-tization. Over the next 3 week, we made our way up to camp 1, camp 2 and back to base camp a few times, spending nights at camp 1 and camp 2. Acclimatizing involves climbing up to higher camps and coming back down to sleep. It’s a proven method of strengthening your body against the altitude.

Pam Pappas is a mountain climber. Pam voluntarily takes part in excursions that others would view as the mother of all nightmares. Pam is my friend, koumbara and out-doorswoman extraordinaire. Ms. Pappas has recently re-turned from a successful climb of Mt. Everest. Being that she is the fi rst Ikarian to ever accomplish such a immense challenge, I thought it fi tting to include an interview in this issue.

OK, let’s get the important stuff out of the way fi rst. What part of Ikaria are you from?

I’m only Ikarian on my mother’s side. My dad’s side is Spartan. My mom’s mom is from Chrysostomos and my mom’s dad is from Daphne.

You take part in many types of ad-venturous outdoor activities. What is it about climbing that roped you in?

Climbing combines all the intensity of a dangerous sport with the love of the outdoors. There’s not a lot of room for error. You have to be confi dent in your roping ability and diligent about your footwork. You have to stay strong physi-

cally and focused, mentally. The possibility to get in real trouble, or to just fall is always there and you’re always reminded of the danger when you look down a 3000 foot cliff face. On the mountain, nature tests you in a way it doesn’t at sea level. You have to be disciplined, strong and fl exible depending on what she decides to throw at you. You can still do everything right and get killed. Your mortality is always in question, it makes you appreciate how fragile and strong you are at any one time.

What types of conditions did you face?

The Khumbu ice fall is a moving glacier where ropes and ladders are placed for ease of movement. Even with the extra equip-ment, stepping

is diffi cult and climbing can be strenuous as you are normally carrying some weight in your pack at this point. The ladder crossings are unstable and ladders are known to collapse under foot or get engulfed by the moving ter-rain and crushed. At camp 2 we experienced a 100 mile/hour wind storm that shredded our tent at 2 am. My tent mate and I had to drop our tent in the middle of the night to save our gear, weight it with blocks of ice and spend the night in the guide’s tent while we waited out the weather. I passed 4 dead bodies on summit day. 1 was from the previous day and still clipped to the rope. The others were off the trail and decaying as they were from previ-ous climbing seasons.The Lhotse face is an 80 degree, 2000 foot wall of ice. Climbing it can be strenuous, cold and exhausting, until the sun comes up at which point you’re dieing of the heat refl ected off the snow. I’ve got a great appetite, but at altitude, food loses its taste and you’re not feeling 100%. People are constantly leaving the dining tent to throw up or run to the sh*t tent because of diarrhea. You cannot be squeamish about it. You have to continue eating and often eat what others aren’t able to stomach. I feel like my training at the Greek dinner table was invaluable “fi nish your plate”, “just one more bite”. You can’t be strong without food, you eat whether you feel like it or not.Blisters, on toes, on heels, on ankles, on arches. Heavy packs. Oxygen masks obstructing your view and limiting your head movement. Mitts getting in the way of clipping into ropes. The inside of your tent freezing while you’re sleeping and then “snowing” on you. Waking up gasping for air. Feeling nauseated and having to keep going.You experience doubt and fear from other climbers, the stress level, especially on summit day is tactile and in your face. The threat of death is real and different climb-ers react in different ways. Either way, it adds stress to your climb.There’s a ton of things I could list. It’s just what you deal with when you climb high mountains.

You were one of only three in your group to sum-mit. What do you use as motivation to keep you going through the rough parts?

I love to climb and that includes every aspect of it. What some might consider rough parts or diffi cult days, I con-sider to be part of the climbing experience. It’s the reason I’m there and love it so much. When you climb, you expect to be cold, fatigued and not feeling too well at the higher altitudes. In a way, these elements heighten your sense of risk and add to the rush of the adventure. Dig-ging deep is part of the fun and what gets your adrenaline fl owing.

So you are working way way through the seven sum-mits, what is left on your climbing agenda?

I only have one of the seven summits left to climb and that is Koskiusko in Australia. It is, by far, the easiest and smallest of the seven. Offi cially, I could complete the 7 summits by just climbing Koskiusko. But, some have expanded the defi nition of the Australian continent to include the surrounding islands. There is a peak in Papua New Guinea called Carstenz Pyramid, which might clas-sify as Australasia’s highest peak. Let’s just say there are a string of political and logistical problems in just getting to the base of that mountain. Although, the climb itself is fairly straightforward. My climbing friends and I are looking into it right now.After the 7 summits, there are a lot of more technical climbs I want to do in Peru and the Canadian Rockies, with the aspiration of going back to the Himalayas to climb Ama Dablam. Ama Dablam is beautiful and tricky at the same time without the extreme altitude. It is about 22,500 feet compared with Everest at 29,035 feet. I might be tempted to do another 8000 meter peak (there are 14) with the right team.

Does continuous dancing of the Ikariotiko on 2 hours of sleep count as training?

I use dancing to explain my passion for climbing all the time. It’s why climbers never talk about fatigue. If you love to dance and have been nearly passed out at 5:30 am at a convention, and the Ikariotiko starts to play and you get out of your chair and stumble to the dance fl oor, you know what passion is. YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE ENERGY TO DO THE THINGS YOU LOVE!

Will we see you at the convention in Los Angeles this year?

My vacation time is all burned up for the year, but I’m trying to cut a deal with my boss to have that weekend off and travel to LA for the convention! Yia Sas.


Property Ownership Confl icts on the Island of Ikaria*

Participants to Pan-Icari-an Conventions encoun-ter, at times, small groups of individuals, friends and relatives, engaged in a spirited, animated and oc-casionally rather conten-tious discussion regarding the purchase, sale, and at times loss of property located on the island of Ikaria, as well as property ownership battles carried out in Greek courts or at notary public offi ces in Greece. It is very strange indeed to encounter such groups of Ikarian Americans em-broiled in property ownership disputes regarding proper-ties located thousands of miles away.

Property ownership and property ownership protection on the island of Ikaria have been perennial problems in the lives of current and former inhabitants of the island, sometimes splitting families apart, occasionally leading to briberies of both public offi cials and fraudulent wit-nesses, and creating at times an unhealthy atmosphere among individuals who used to be in excellent terms with each other prior to such property ownership con-fl icts. The mentality of many past inhabitants of Ikaria of ignoring and not resolving inheritance issues left to be ultimately resolved among their heirs, an attitude that started changing after the end of WW II, has created a very unclear and confusing picture of property owner-ship on the island.

It is not an exaggeration to say that I got totally bewil-dered several times observing siblings not talking to each other because of unresolved ownership confl icts regard-ing pitiful pieces of land and other property––really worthless when compared to the damage caused to the

LITERATUREfabric of the family under consideration. I was equally puzzled witnessing vacationers to the island of Ikaria wasting about a month of their precious and relatively short vacation time fi ling lawsuits and spending, if not wasting, their limited and precious vacation time in courts. Unfortunately, no family appears to be immune to such sorry occurrences of property ownership disputes.

The history of the island of Ikaria and its repeated past depopulations and repopulations, attributed to differ-ent conquerors of the island, to raids by pirates, or both, were some of the main culprits leading to such confl icts and feuds regarding property ownership on the island. The population of Ikaria has not always been uniform throughout its history. Legally established claims of un-ambiguous property ownership over extended periods of time are seldom available. Individuals occupying vacant and unclaimed land tend to stake a claim of ownership after several years. However, unless such a claim is legally recorded and registered in the permanent archives of the island for accurate reference to ownership counter-claims at any future time, claims recorded on a piece of paper and held in the private archives of individuals can be easily lost or destroyed, erasing any prior evidence of property ownership.

For the sake of the history of the island of Ikaria, all surviving documents ought to be collected, reproduced, legally authenticated, and eventually published in a series of volumes arranged chronologically. They would become an integral part of the history of Ikaria kept in publicly held archives and in public libraries, available to all generations of Ikarians. Such efforts, however, require the cooperation of all individuals in possession of such documents, as well as the assurance of those supervising those efforts that the documents under consideration will be used with extreme care and will be returned promptly to their rightful owners. Preliminary attempts have already been made by the late S. Zolotas who had super-vised the collection and assembly of one volume of such documents under the care of the Panikarian Brotherhood of Athens (Panikariaki Adelphoteta Athenon).

Under Ottoman rule, which was in effect in Ikaria for nearly four centuries until 1912, the occupied land was considered to be the property of the Ottoman Empire, namely, the property of the appropriate sultan at the time. The Ottoman sultan offered the occupied land to the inhabitants to cultivate it and in return, pay the sultan an appropriate tax. The sultan, however, reserved the

right of ownership. At the conclusion of the Revolution for Independence of Greece against Turkey, the Greek government transferred outright property ownership of the liberated land to the individuals cultivating it during the Ottoman rule. Therefore, property ownership became a fait accompli on the island of Ikaria after 1912. Con-sidering that Ikaria was under Ottoman rule, even super-fi cially, for nearly four centuries, property ownership on the island was further complicated by occasional written decisions or fi rmans (fi rmani) of the appropriate sultan at the time.

In the absence of any unambiguous proof of ownership regarding a particular piece of property on the island, either due to loss or destruction of the only existing document, one can still claim the property if there are two independent and nonrelatives individuals who could confi rm in writing and under oath that the property has been indeed owned and used by the person who claims it. Obviously, such actions open the fl ood gate to fraud and bribery, particularly if there is no fear of punishment for fraudulent statements due to lack of legal documentation. The initial owner on the other hand, residing permanently on the island or overseas but without legal documentation regarding the property, needs to prove property owner-ship in a Greek court, a nearly impossible procedure. Efforts to reclaim ownership of lost property are, by and large, futile unless one is prepared to invest many years in Greek courts and a lot of money in legal battles, fi lling the pockets of lawyers. Quite often the purchase of new property associated with clear ownership status costs much less, one’s heartburn accompanying such court battles notwithstanding.

With several families of former inhabitants of Ikaria abandoning the island in the past in search of a better life, many of them never to return, parcels of land were left uncultivated and without apparent owners. Abandoned houses were, by and large, stripped completely of any movable parts, like doors, windows, and roofi ng materi-als, leaving behind nothing else but standing but ruined walls. Abandoned land, on the other hand, remained mainly uncultivated but intact. Several abandoned land parcels were eventually cultivated by locals who did not possess land of their own. Within a couple of decades the families of such individuals became the unchallenged owners of those parcels by default. In all fairness, no one could blame those individuals; cultivated land is defi nite-ly preferred to waste land.

Waste land was totally worthless in the past so such events did not affect the lives of the locals. However, as tourism started developing on the island, reaching new highs in recent years, the need for extra land to begin new construction for additional income or for personal use overshadowed everything else. Land, wasted or cultivat-ed, is being looked upon nowadays as a source of extra income leading to confl icts between family members and occasionally tearing apart what used to be close-knit families in the past. It is painful indeed to witness some villagers and some visitors to Ikaria not talking to each other because of disagreements and confl icts regarding property ownership rights. The worst part of it is that many of those contesting individuals are related to each other to some extent. Fighting against strangers is bad enough; fi ghting against one’s own relatives is unbear-able.
