Pan-African Alliance to Confront 21st CenturyNeo-Colonialism

On Saturday May 29th 2010 a newly established Pan-Africanist alliance of studentassociations and left political parties coordinated the Pan-African Youth Summit 2010. Thetheme was "Toward a Second Wave of Liberation Struggle." The event took placeafter months of preparation and ideological work to ensure the outcome of the summitwas a progressive seed for a new anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist Pan-African coalition.

The event was an overwhelming success with over 120 individuals present consistingof student and activist representatives from throughout Senegal and West Africa. Thesummit was a timely response to the increasing pace of foreign militarization and neo-liberal capitalism threatening the popular classes of West Africa.

The three topics were:

• Africa: Movements of Liberation Before and After Independence• Toward a New Wave of Popular Democratic Liberation Struggle• The Struggle Against Imperialism: Pan-African Movements and International

Solidarity

The panel discussions focused on each of the three topics followed by a concludingpleneary session to summarize the most important points of the entire day. The points areto be included in a founding manifesto for the newly established League of RevolutionaryPan-Africanists (LIGUE DES PAN-AFRICANISTES REVOLUTIONNAIRES).

Africa: Movements of Liberation Before and AfterIndependence

This panel focused on a class analysis of 20th century anti-colonial movements inAfrica. The panel discussed the internal contradictions and pitfalls of African liberationmovements in the last century. Panelists also discussed the counter-revolution againstthe radical nationalist governments in Africa during the 20th century.

Toward a New Wave of Popular Democratic LiberationStruggle

This panel discussed methods by which the younger generations can create a new era ofpopular and democratic struggles in Africa. The first part of the discussion analyzed thedaily challenges faced by the popular classes of Africa in the 21st century. Next, panelisthighlighted the link between imperialism and the internal difficulties of poverty and socialdislocation. Finally, the panelists discussed the role of culture in creating a revolutionaryconsciousness among youth. This lively panel included poetry, song and intense debatesbetween panelists and participants.

The Struggle Against Imperialism: Pan-AfricanMovements and International Solidarity

This panel discussed the potential impact of a revolutionary Pan-African movement onthe international fight against imperialism and global capitalism. The discussion analyzedthe Bolivarian revolution in Latin America, the peasant revolts in South Asia and thecontinuing significance of the Cuban Revolution. The panel also discussed the currentpredicament of revolutionary movements among oppressed nationalities and the working-class in the imperial power, United States of America. Finally, the discussion imagined therole of the new Pan-African League in the international movement towards socialism.

After-Party (Live From Planet Earth)

The Summit was followed by a Pan-African themed after-party hosted by the U.S.-basedLiberator Magazine called "Live From Planet Earth". The party featured music fromAfrica and the diaspora and was an opportunity for networking and a much deservedcelebration in the spirit of the summit. One attendee of the party commented, "that wasone of the wildest parties i've ever jammed at!"

Where Do We Go From Here?

The objective in the following weeks is to establish a permanent administrative bodyresponsible for managing the operations of the League, recruiting new members andcoordinating the next Pan-African Youth Summit. There will also be a process to applyfor membership into the League of Revolutionary Pan-Africanists. Membership consists ofleading one of the LPR's or more of the organizations operations and committing oneselfto the struggle for leadership within mass organizations such as student associations,artist collectives and trade unions. The primary function of the League will be to raiserevolutionary consciousness in West African civil society.
