As I am forming my thoughts for this newsletter, the weather is cold and snowy. At this time of the year we are sooo over the landscape of winter. I am hoping as you start to read this newslet-ter it is sunny and WARM. I love the eye appeal of the spring sea-son, the blooming flowers and the budding trees. It's the time to rethink what you have been doing all winter...a time for a change, so to speak. I usually am inspired to purchase brighter fabric in the spring. I like to start a different project or pattern that I have

been saving. Rethink what you have always created in the past, and try some-thing NEW. You might take a class to learn a new technique or shortcut. You may need to purge your stash to make room for the the bright new fabric a shop-ping spree will yield. Enjoy your spring...no matter how you do it.

TEACHERS TABLE

PALS is re-starting their "Teacher's Table" in May. We had this area a few years ago. We think this is valuable and important in our quilting community. The ta-ble will be available for teachers who are PALS members to display samples and/or info of a class they will be teaching. You may sit at this table to answer any question about your class, and to sign up quilting students. PALS remains committed to Section 5.5 of our policies which states..."No person, business or any other group shall use the PALS membership list for advertising, sales, per-sonal gain, or any other 'for profit' purpose." ...and... Section 5.6 of our policies which states..."No person, business or any other group shall use the Show and Tell portion of a meeting to advertise sales promotions of work for hire."

MUG RUG AUCTION

Don’t forget your mug rugs for the May auction. Mug rugs will be hung on the clothesline with a paper bag attached to each one. Members may purchase tick-ets (4/$1.00) and put tickets in the bag attached to the mug rug they would like to win. After all of the members have had a chance to "bid" on the mug rugs, we will draw a winning ticket from each bag and award the mug rugs. Mug rugs will only be auctioned individually not in sets. This is a fund raiser for the 2017 Threads of Friendship Quilt Show.

The Show and Tell part of our meetings is extremely important. Many PALS members want to show their talents and workmanship of their quilts, and many other PALS members want to see those quilts. We all need inspiration at times and we all can learn from each other. We all work very hard on our quilts and we are proud of our accomplishments. Consider these thoughts when attending the guild meeting. Please stay till the end of the meeting to be part of the PALS Show and Tell.

Darlene started sewing in 4-H, at 9 years old, on her Grandmother’s treadle machine. After retiring from teaching first grade, she rekindled her love of sewing. When not caring for her grandchildren, you will find her scoping out the colors and textures of buttons, rib-bons, yarns, and trims. Darlene lives in Muskegon and is a member of Patcher’s on the Lakeshore, Lighthouse Quilt Guild, and the American Quilting Society.

This scrappy, collage landscape quilt is fun and easy to make and will have you looking at our beautiful surroundings with different eyes. NANCY MAHONEY COMES TO PALS We are all very excited about Nancy Mahoney's visit June 5-6, 2016. Nan-cy is a very accomplished quilter, speaker, and teacher. See her full bio below. She will present a lecture Monday evening entitled "Treasurers from the 30's" and offer classes on Monday and Tuesday. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn from the very best. Author, teacher, fabric designer, and award-winning quilt maker Nancy Ma-honey, of Sparta, Georgia has enjoyed making quilts for more than 25 years. Her beautiful quilts have been featured more than 100 times in na-tional and international quilt magazines. Nancy has designed several fabric lines for P&B Textiles, along with dozens of patterns. Nancy will also be our vendor for the evening with her many books.

Wild Waves Create a dynamic design with this off-center Pineapple block, while learning all the tricks of foundation paper piecing. In this fast-pace class, all aspects of foundation paper piecing will be covered, including how to measure, cut, and correctly position the right fabric piece. This is a great class for mastering foundation paper piecing! Pattern included for each student. Quilt size: 60" x 60". Each month at our PALS meeting we will be holding a raffle to help generate funds to support our “Threads of Friendship” 2017 quilt show. Tickets are 4 for $1.00

As you are spring cleaning in your sewing space, we ask that you consider donating any unwanted items to the boutique the guild will have at the Threads of Friendship quilt show next year. Space is limited so we are asking for quilting related items only. Ideas would be fabric, notions, threads, rulers, books, maga-zines, kits, or UFOs. Magazines should not be older than 2010. Donations may be brought to the guild meetings and given to Connie Townsend. If you need to make other arrangements call 616-846-2246 or email townsendc51@att.net. If your items are quite heavy (such as books or magazines) please have them in a box or double bagged.

Baby Quilt News....

It seems we need some clarification about how pins are awarded for making and donating baby quilts. A pin is earned by making and donating at least two quilts between our November meeting and the following October membership meeting. That is our service project year. If you only donate one quilt in that time frame, you will not earn a pin. If you donate more than two quilts, you will receive one pin for the year. We have added some 'prizes' for our top three people who donate the most quilts. The person with the most will get their membership paid for the following year. The second and third place people will each receive a $15 gift certificate. After our April meeting, our top three mem-bers have donated 24, 14, and 10 quilts and we have received a total of 148 quilts since November. Great job, Ladies! We are thrilled to say we are half way through our "baby quilt year" and half way to our goal of 300 quilts by our October meeting. Keep up the good work and I know you will all help with reaching our goal. Here is the list of those who have turned in quilts since November. 2, 2015:

Base the Quilt Size on Your Bed Size

Quilt sizes vary because bed sizes vary. While we are all familiar with the term twin, double, queen, king we really don’t always know the size we need. The term refers to the mattress size, we need to decide how we are going to use the quilt. Is it going to be used as a comforter, a coverlet, or a bedspread? A comforter hangs over the edge of the edge a little bit. The coverlet is usually used with a dust ruffle and does not hang all the way to the floor. A bed-spread is intended to hang to the floor, and generally will include extra tuck under the pillows. In order to make your quilt fit properly, you will need to take some measurements of the bed, and adjust your pattern accordingly. It is great to use a quilt size chart as a starting point and a way to double check your measurements. Just to be sure measure the top of your mattress. Quilt Size Chart Bed Quilt Sizes Crib 27” x 52” Twin 39” x 75” Full 54” x 75” Queen 60” x 80”

Take thickness into consideration The next measurement you will want to take is the thickness of the mattress. This will help you determine the extra length and width that will hang over the sides of the bed.

Consider the drop Now decide how far down the sides of the bed you want the quilt to hang. Some beds sit lower to the ground while others almost need a step.

Stay Calm! Now we can calculate.

We encourage you to continue making your blocks and bringing them to the meetings. They generate a lot of interest but our numbers are down a bit. Don’t become discouraged, keep trying.

Remember this experience will greatly benefit your quilt making skills and give you the confidence to move on to more challenging projects.

Some notes about judging your block of the month mystery quilt entries.

Measure, measure, measure. Your block must be 9½” square.

Press, and then press again. All seams should lay flat and smooth. The entire block should be flat not puckered in spots. Just a hint, attach your name on a small piece of paper with a small pin on one cor-ner, not the center. We have small pins and forms available at the Mystery Quilt table. Please do not tape your info on.

Then measure and press again.

Are all the lines on your block straight? Are all your seams ¼”—exactly? Have you checked your nee-dle position?

Check your block for eye appeal. Don’t overdo your accent fabrics, mix them up with the greys, blacks and small black & white prints.

The Mystery Quilt is as much about your good quilting skills as it is about design.

Calculate Depth of Mattress Start with the mattress top size. We are going to use a queen mattress that is 14” deep. 60”(wide) +14”+14”= 88” and 80”(long)+ 14” = 94”

Calculate Drop Length The size above 88” x 94” will cover the mattress and hang down the sides to obscure the mattress. Depending on the type of your quilt you will need to add this to the size of the quilt. For example, if we are going to use this quilt on a bed with a dust ruffle, we don’t want our quilt to hang to the floor. Measure from the bottom of the mattress to about half way down the dust ruffle. Let’s say, if this 12” then we want to add 12” to the length because it will not hang down at the top of the bed and 24” to the width so it will hang down 12” below the bottom of the mattress on both sides. This is the finished size of your queen quilt.

60” + 14” + 14” = 88” + 12” + 12” = 112” 80” + 14” = 94” + 12” = 106”

Want it all the way to the floor? In-stead of adding 12” (above) add your measurement to the floor. If you need to add pillow tuck add 10” to the length only.

But wait, It’s a gift. No need to pan-ic, remain calm. So, you don’t know the size it needs to be. Unless you plan to break in and measure the bed in secret, just choose a pattern you like that is the size you want and make the quilt the size the pattern calls for. The recipient will be thrilled and will appreciate your hard work and gener-osity and use the quilt wherever they like.
