Summit on Latino Student Success: Critical Analysis and Dialogue for Transforming STEM Pedagogies and Policies

Held May 13-14, 2010 at UTSA

Over 50 educators and policymakers from Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, New York and Washington, D.C.

Culminated in the development and publication of a policy brief with strategies to transform STEM teacher preparation and impact the success of Latino students

Implement a more effective community outreach effort to recruit Hispanics to STEM areas

Implement an Interdisciplinary Community of Practice approach to increase students’ resiliency, persistence, and self-efficacy

Develop a culturally efficacious Interdisciplinary Faculty Community of Practice (CofP) to address Hispanic student engagement and success issues

Implement a more robust and rigorous student preparation program prior to enrolling in STEM courses

Implement a culturally responsive mentoring and coaching system

Conduct research on topics related to inclusion and success of Hispanic students in the STEM areas

E3 Exemplars: La Clase Mágica(The Magical Class)

La Clase Mágica UTSA (LCM@@UTSA) is a bilingual/bicultural technology based afterschool program at Las Palmas Elementary in Edgewood ISD

Netbooks & iPhones provided to 20 generalists and 20 bilingual teacher candidates per semester for technology instruction with students and parents

Serves as a space that validates children’s bilingualism and biliteracy

Provides multi-generational links of communication through technology for children and their families

Bilingual teacher candidates are afforded a unique setting to put their own biliteracy and bilingualism into action and improve these skills

iClass: Innovative Communities of Learning Advancing Student Success

An Early College Approach for Increasing Latino Participation in the STEM Disciplines

Collaboratively working with a high need high school, 50 Latino, other minority, or low-income 11th and 12th graders will receive academic and psychosocial support by participating in a dual enrollment program and will complete nine to twelve semester hours of college credit in STEM courses

iClass Approach

Target Latino and low-income students who fall within the 40th and 90th percentile of their graduating class

Work collaboratively with schools to foster and support college-going cultures

Prepare university mathematics and science faculty to work collaboratively with mathematics and science high school teachers to adjust and align curriculum syllabi at the high school and university levels

Demonstrate the effectiveness of an improved curricular and instructional program for increasing Latino college access and success through a dual enrollment program

Upcoming ATE Events

Building Culturally Relevant Lessons: A Hands-On Lesson Planning Professional Development presented by Dr. Emily Bonner This two-day workshop will be offered on two separate dates: February 8th or 9th, 2011 AND March 8th or 9th, 2011 9am to 4 pm at the UTSA Downtown Campus, BV 1.1338 Teachers will need to attend one day in February and one day in March.

Super SPED Saturday with Sarah Barrientes, Kristie Metting, Marisol Walker, and Fellow Special Educators Saturday, February 26, 2011 9 am- 4 pm at the UTSA 1604 Campus: UC Retama Auditorium

Culturally Efficacious Mentoring with Dr. Belinda B. Flores Maymester graduate course to be held at the UTSA 1604 Campus May 9, 2011 to May 28, 2011 Tuition and related fees will be covered by the Greater Texas Foundation TAILC grant for qualified applicants
