“So often, what we do is guided by our clients. ... Weddings and events are my chance to bring my cli-ent’s vision to life. Bouquets is my chance to do what-ever I want,” Isabella Sikaffey, owner of Flora Bella in Menlo Park, said. “It’s a fun way to participate in the floral community and show creativity in context with the art.”

This year’s floral designers were chosen last au-tumn. Bouquets to Art’s organizers then contacted floral designers in February with a painting or sculp-tural assignment for interpretation. In the weeks leading up to the show, designers research their as-signment’s artist, epoch and techniques — and plan their containers, flowers, greenery and unifying state-ment.

On Monday, March 10, participants go as early as 4 or 5 a.m. to buy flowers from the historic San Fran-cisco Flower Mart at 6th and Brannan streets. “We are lucky to have one of the best flower markets in the world here in San Francisco,” De Voy said.

Other participants, including Filoli volunteers Cath-erine Tompkison and Joan Rock, will gather their ma-terials rather than purchase them. Tulip magnolia, al-mond and peach trees, daffodils and tulips are among the materials Tompkison expects to collect at the his-toric Filoli estate. “What you see in the arrangement will look like Filoli,” Tompkison said, whose assigned painting is in keeping with Filoli’s style.

Woodside-Atherton Garden Club’s Lurline Coonan, who has participated in Bouquets to Art for two de-cades, also opts to gather her own flowers. “There are endless possibilities. I use native plants and what I have in my garden, or other gardens. It’s amaz-ing what you can find by keeping an eye open,” she said.

This year, she will interpret a wintry pastoral paint-ing by placing oak branches in an old pewter bowl on a cold, slate slab next to the painting. “Because it’s winter, it should be quite stark,” Coonan said.

Floral designer Sikaffey will interpret a painting of

oranges and tissue paper. “I’ll probably use something to bring out the dimpled texture of the orange,” she said. “I’ll use balls of one solid type of flower, and then do a different, light and airy tissue to bring in the texture of the tissue paper. I like to play around with it and not do something that is a 100 percent copy of the painting,” she said.

A complex relationship exists between the floral and fine art, said De Voy. “I try to translate the feeling I get from the painting to give you the same impres-sion, so that my work is related to the painting but not a literal interpretation,” she said.

Participating in Bouquets to Art is an honor for which floral designers apply and compete. The show itself, however, is not judged. As such, it is a showcase for floral designers and a gift to the community, said De Voy.

“The hours we spend, the flowers we buy, the con-tainers we create are out of our pocket and are our gift to the cause. We consider it an honor. I believe in the museum and I contribute my art to benefit the fine arts museums,” she said.

Throughout the week, there will be events at Bou-quets to Art, including an Ikebana demonstration on Friday, March 14 at 2 p.m. featuring Katsuko Thielke of Mountain View. Thielke, who began her training in Tokyo, Japan, has practiced the technique for the past 40 years. As a Sogetsu artist, her approach is to express herself freely through flowers with an open mind.

Bouquets to Art closes on Saturday, so all floral arrangements must endure the whole week long. In-stead of staying fresh in refrigerators, flowers will be exposed to hot ambient lighting and crowds. There-fore, choosing living materials with a high potential for longevity is important to designers like De Voy, who will travel from Atherton to San Francisco every day of the show to hydrate, feed and replenish her flowers.

“It’s an ephemeral art, so get out there and enjoy it,” De Voy said. ■Editorial Intern Veronica Sudekum can be e-maile-dat [email protected].

M arch is the perfect time for touring

gardens. We have wonderful gardens in the Bay Area. In this month’s tips I mention gardens on the Peninsula I like to visit several times a year.

Touring right here at home has many advantages such as sleeping in your own bed at night, eating familiar foods and in-viting friends you may otherwise not get to travel with.

Here are the tips.1. Take a guided tour. There are tours be-

ing given throughout the Bay Area all the time. A local travel agent can be of help and calling the garden you plan to visit can line you up with a tour group. Google Bay Area Garden Tours. If you are in a garden club, you can plan to have a Master Gardener from your club lead the group on a local tour.

2. Do a self-guided tour. It may be an ad-venture with rewards you never would get on a guided tour. Bring your camera, note-book and a lunch. If you have a friend you would like to spend a few hours with, take

him or her, too.3. Take a wildflower drive. Wildflowers in

California start blooming in Southern Cali-fornia in early spring and work their way north as the spring and summer progress. To find where they are blooming do a Google search under California wildflowers.

4. Some of my favorite gardens to visit in March are Hakone gardens in Saratoga, Central Park Japanese Garden in San Ma-teo Central Park, Filoli in Woodside, Sunset Gardens in Menlo Park, Gamble Garden in Palo Alto and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, especially the Japanese Garden and Strybing Arboretum. I start early to be sure to catch plum, cherry and wisteria bloom.

5. Bulbs are up from early February to late March. Look for daffodils, narcissus, free-sia, iris, tulips and anemone. In the above-mentioned gardens they may be labeled so be sure to bring a notebook to record your favorites.

6. Maintenance for spring in your garden entails getting weeds under control early, before they become a nuisance. Take mea-sures to control snails, gophers, deer and other garden invaders before they arrive. I am always working on banana-slug control. It seems neverending.

7. Take lots of photographs. When I was at Sunset Magazine I learned from the pro-

fessional photographers to always use a tri-pod when photographing flowers. Another photography tip is to do your picture taking in the morning or afternoon, not during the brightest time of the day.

8. Fertilize and water. Plants need food and the only way the food will get to the roots is with water.

9. Learn new plants on an ongoing basis. Try to learn a plant a day. It isn’t that hard. You can do it at home or in your car (please, not while driving) with a Western Garden Book or you can get out to a nursery or show garden with the plants. Just think how many plants you will know in a year.

10. Share your garden experience with a child. I got started by having an adult take my hand and show me the wonders of gardening — from the first radish seeds I planted at age 4 to the spider plant I brought home from kindergarten.

Good gardening. ■Garden coach Jack McKinnon has been a gardener for 35 years, and worked in the Sunset Magazine gardens for 12 years. He can be reached at 650-455-0687, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Visit his Web site at www.jackthegardencoach.com.

Realtors Offer Free Assistance to Seniors May 5-10batteries installed. The volunteers also do some light vacuuming, move items from hard-to-reach shelves, rake leaves and trim overgrown hedges for safety.

RSVP was adopted as an offi cial association community outreach project of the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® in 2002. On the Peninsula and in the South Bay, the program now extends from as far north as Daly City to as

far south as Gilroy. There are plans to expand the program to more Realtor Associations in California and around the nation.

In 2007, 570 Realtors and affi liates provided free help to nearly 400 home¬owners.

In the SILVAR’s fi ve districts alone, 345 volunteers helped 208 senior residents.

Homeowners or renters who are advanced in years, disabled or other¬wise challenged and live in the communities of Atherton, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Woodside, Portola Valley, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Monte Sereno and Los Gatos may apply for services by contacting the SILVAR offi ce at (408) 200-0100 for information and an application before the March deadline.

Deadline for requests is March 15.

Realtors and affi liates with the Silicon Valley Association of REALTORS® are once again embarking on the annual Realtor Service Volunteer Program (RSVP), which provides seniors and homebound residents who live on the Peninsula or in the South Bay free assistance with household tasks which they cannot perform due to physical or fi nancial constraints. RSVP week is set for May 5-10. The deadline for seniors to request assistance is Saturday, March 15.

The annual hands-on effort is organized each year by local Realtors in cooperation with various community organizations and senior centers. During RSVP Week, teams of Realtor and affi liate volunteers will visit senior citizens and perform various cleaning and household maintenance work free of charge.

“RSVP is one way we can give back to those who have built our communities,” said Eileen Giorgi, chair of SILVAR’s RSVP program. “The program enables us to assist those most in need – seniors and the homebound, with basic and necessary household tasks that insure their safety and help them stay in their homes for a longer period of time.”

Seniors may request to have light bulbs replaced, house numbers installed, furnace fi lters changed, windows cleaned, mattresses turned or new smoke detector

The Palo Alto Weekly publishes obituaries about people who lived in, or played a prominent role in, the community.

Obituaries are written by staff writers, based on information provided by mortuaries and/or family members. Due to space limits and other reasons, we may not include all the information a family wishes.

Some families choose to write their own memorial announcements, then purchase space to publish it.

The Palo Alto Weekly handles funeral announcements for a small fee based on length of text. Photos may also be included.

For information call 326-8210, ext 221 (Blanca) or email [email protected]
