A self-professed car fanatic, it made sense that with his aptitude and interests, he would make a great mechanical engineer. He thought so, his father thought so, and so, apparently, did Stan- ford, where he received his degree in mechanical en- gineering. Things didn’t turn out as expected. Muffly is far more attuned to pruning these days than to tuning engines, and if you’re lucky enough, you may see him winding his way along Palo Alto streets on his bike, a 20-year-old, red “Stump Jumper,” tow- ing a 15-foot ladder strapped to a trailer and attached by bungee cord. Muffly does not drive a car or a truck. In fact, he doesn’t own one, and hasn’t for more than a decade. “I haven’t had a car since 1993 and I really haven’t driven an appreciable amount since 1989,” he said. “I just wasn’t using it, and I preferred to have the mon- ey.” Muffly was born and raised in Pender, Neb., a town of either 1,230 or 1,320, depending on which end of town you ride in on. His father was the town doctor, a man who had once harbored dreams of being a me- chanical engineer himself. Instead, he encouraged his precocious young son to pursue mechanical interests, and Muffly was happy to oblige him. He was, in his words, obsessed with cars. At first he was enthralled with military vehicles, tanks and the like, but as he moved toward adolescence, he realized that he could be mechanically inclined and still be cool if he transferred his affinity to cars. Eventually he landed at Magic. “It’s an unusual little nonprofit and intentional com- munity that has its roots back in the ’70s but has made its way through the intervening 25 years by engaging in all kinds of public and ecologically based service,” he said. It was at Magic where he began his apprenticeship of sorts by helping reforest the oak trees in the foothills around the Stanford Dish. He worked on tree projects for the next three years or so, and then got involved in an Earth Day project that gave away fruit trees to school children for planting in their back yards. Things didn’t turn out as expected.Muffly is far more attuned to pruning these days

than to tuning engines, and if you’re lucky enough, youmay see him winding his way along Palo Alto streetson his bike, a 20-year-old, red “Stump Jumper,” tow-ing a 15-foot ladder strapped to a trailer and attachedby bungee cord. Muffly does not drive a car or a truck.In fact, he doesn’t own one, and hasn’t for more thana decade.

“I haven’t had a car since 1993 and I really haven’tdriven an appreciable amount since 1989,” he said. “Ijust wasn’t using it, and I preferred to have the mon-ey.”

Muffly was born and raised in Pender, Neb., a townof either 1,230 or 1,320, depending on which end oftown you ride in on. His father was the town doctor, aman who had once harbored dreams of being a me-chanical engineer himself. Instead, he encouraged hisprecocious young son to pursue mechanical interests,and Muffly was happy to oblige him.

He was, in his words, obsessed with cars. first year they were able to give away some-thing like 1,300 trees, which would ordinarilyhave been destroyed at the end of the season.

The program, a rousing success right off thebat, has been going strong for 16 years, givingaway something like 50,000 trees all told.

“That started me on a 15-year odyssey oflearning about fruit trees ... how to prune themto produce good fruit — I’m going to say thisat the risk of getting hung,” he said, “but nurs-ery people often don’t have a clue. They buywhat people ask for and do not necessarilyknow what’s best adapted. I consider it a realproblem and I’m willing to say something pub-licly because I want to pressure them to dosomething about it.”

He then worked with Canopy: Trees for PaloAlto, a nonprofit that educates the communi-ty in the stewardship of new and existing trees.“Even though I wasn’t really pursuing my treeinterests, it was still there. I’d learned a lot, and

I wanted to get back to working it.”In 2000 he was hired by the city of Santa

Cruz to revise the city’s tree-planting list.Muffly saw this as “an experiment that humanbeings had been carrying out for more than acentury and from which nobody had botheredto collect the data.”

He proceeded to collect that data by me-thodically riding through the city’s streets onhis bike, noting the trees that thrived and thetrees that didn’t. To this day, when he goesthrough Santa Cruz, he sees the trees that herecommended for planting.

“I collected the data, synthesized the data,and gave them a list. I tell you what — thosetrees are growing. I go to Santa Cruz andsmile,” he said.

Muffly is on his own now, pruning the treesof Palo Alto and Menlo Park residents whohave a need for “thoughtful pruning.” He spe-cializes in smaller trees and on jobs whereclients need someone who cares deeply aboutthe job.

For most households the bulletinboard is an essential organizingand display tool. But beautiful it isnot. How can you bring visualpeace to this chaotic collection ofloose papers?

Alternatives• Try living without one. Set

aside some time to remove allthose loose papers and organizethem into categories. Sort your pa-pers and store them in manila fold-ers that can be kept in a drawer orbasket. Instead of layering your re-frigerator with your kid’s master-

pieces, provide one large pictureframe per child. Have your childpick a permanent hanging spot inthe kitchen or family room. Collectyour child’s art and awards in abox and at the end of each monthhave him/her select a favorite piece(or two) to insert in the pictureframe.

• Hide it. Install a small bulletinboard on the door inside the wallcabinet above your phone or in-side your pantry door. This keepsimportant information accessiblebut hidden from view.

• If you must have a bulletinboard, keep it tidy! Remove soiledor aged papers, place papers on theboard at right angles to each other(rather than willy-nilly), leavesome air space here and there andtack down all four corners of what-ever you’re displaying. To makeyour board more arty-looking, addpieces of fabric, feathers, a pressedleaf, a small, framed piece of art,or a lightweight pendant or mask.

• Change your board’s location.Why do we think bulletin boardsmust be in the kitchen, next to thephone or over our desks? Why not

devote an entire wall in the familyroom, in the stairwell, along oneside of a long hall, the ceiling inyour teenage son’s room, the areaover the commode in the guestbath or on the side of yourkitchen’s work island?

Unique bulletin boardsYour bulletin board doesn’t have

to be a warped, pine-framed chunkof cork. Use a little elbow greaseand creativity to construct yourown ever-evolving work of art:

• Use molding or a wallpaperborder strip to frame in and definea large area on your kitchen, fam-ily room or hall wall. You can paintthe wood “frame” in a differentcolor than the walls. If you want toprotect your walls from pin holes,mount a section of carpet, cork orfabric covered-cardboard in theopening.

• How about using a folding can-vas screen as your board? You canpin photographs, artwork andawards on them. These screenswork well as room dividers andcorner fillers, too.

• Make your own French ribbon

board. Cover a rectangle of card-board with a thin layer of quilt bat-ting. Select a pretty fabric to wrapthe batting-covered board. Windsatin ribbon around the board, cre-ating a grid-like effect. Secure theribbon to the board by pushing atack into each intersection. Fancyup the head of plain tacks by glu-ing on buttons or charms or useupholstery tacks, which come in avariety of finishes. For a romanticlook, slide old postcards or photo-graphs, dried flowers and bits oflace under the ribbon.

• Instead of using your refriger-ator to show off your collection ofrefrigerator magnets, display themon a large cookie sheet you frameand hang on the wall.
