Valley boom and the proximity to Stanford Research Park.

“I really love this quirky mix of people in the community,” said Kumiko Toft, a mother of two who has lived there since 2008.

Like the people, traditions in Barron Park also range from the old, such as the annual May Fete started in 1978 with its maypoles and music, to the new, such as the Lunar New Year Celebration, featuring a Lion Dance ac-robatic troupe, in February.

Rakhi Singh, a new resident, admits that it was Barron Park’s ambiance of a “nestled community” that attracted her when she moved in 2012. “And the donkeys; my kids love the donkeys,” she added.

Despite its isolated appearance, Barron Park’s residents are far from detached when it comes to engaging themselves in city-wide ef-forts or addressing local environmental issues. Barron Park prides itself on being one of the first neighborhoods to take part in the city’s emergency preparedness initiative, “Quake- ville,” and launching one of the first neighbor-hood Green Teams.

Singh was also impressed by the support and warm welcome her family received from the neighborhood association. Formed during the long-standing debate of annexation with Palo Alto, the Barron Park Association (BPA), apart from organizing community events, has been at the forefront of addressing issues such as the flooding of Barron Creek in the 1990s and a subsurface groundwater contamination of Matadero Creek in 1982.

Judith Wasow, a resident since 1977, feels that the layout of the neighborhood itself contributes to its “cohesive, embracing” at-mosphere, with almost all the streets leading into the area around Bol Park. Her husband, Tom Wasow, a professor at Stanford Univer-sity, still commutes by bicycle, as do many of the other residents, encouraged by the well-laid-out bike path that runs all the way to the foothills.

In the 35 years that she has lived here, schools have changed, many homes have been renovated, and the city has undergone tremendous development. Yet, the semi-rural “charm” of the neighborhood remains to this day.

D on’t toss that can into the re-cycling bin! Use it in a home-decorating project.

I know, I know. I’m pushing the frugal decorating thing a bit too far, but trust me. There are dozens of clever ways to use cans around your home. And when you do, you’ll save money, help our environment and add a touch of whimsy to your home.

tive-candle holders. Spray paint the cans gold or cover with a collage. You can give an antique-like look to the can by perforating it with tiny holes and applying “instant rust,” available at craft stores. Place a little sand or a few pebbles in the bottom of the tin around the base of the candle.

collect refrigerator magnets. Why not use a big can to display your col-lection? You can put the can on top of the refrigerator, on the kitchen counter, on a bookshelf or on top of a dresser. You could even put it on your desk and use it like a mini-bulletin board.

to the standard bulletin board: Cut out pairs of shapes from cans, like

stars, hearts and dog bones. Any hardware store will carry metal cutters strong enough to cut into tin cans. The shapes should be about

through the middle of each shape and apply Instant Rust until you get the desired crusty look. Then ham-mer the shapes into the wall where you want to display your stuff, about 2 to 4 feet apart and stretch thin wire between the shapes. You can have several rows of wire, one on top of the other, or side by side. Use old-fashioned metal clips to hang photos, art, leaves or whatever from the wires.

Cut out shapes from large cans, such as hearts, spirals, stars or diamonds, flatten them with a hammer and ap-ply Instant Rust. Attach a series of the shapes together with wire or a section of an old hanger. Decorate your shapes with buttons, keys, feathers or twigs and hang your tin-can mobile on the wall.
