Clean SWEEP

Kevin Wright of K&D Disposal will once again be donating his time and equipment to collect the huge amounts of garbage generated by Canaltown Days. This is not new for Kevin, as he has graciously done it for many years. Festival organizers said they are grateful, as the service saves the festival a considerable amount of money.

Rose Lummis Canal Tour

Take a narrated boat tour on a 1953 Mississippi River boat, the Rose Lummis.Tours leave the Port of Palmyra at 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:30 pm. $13 per person, $9 for children ages 2-12. Tickets available at the Canaltown Days Information Booth and at the boat. Lunch and snacks included. Return transportation provided.

Palmyra’s history is alive and well today, over 200 years later. Once known as the “Queen of Canal Towns,” Palmyra was an important center of trade along the Erie Canal, despite its start as a frontier village. Today Palmyra is an historical and recreational oasis in a countryside community that has preserved and retains much of its original architecture. When strolling through Palmyra you can experience the feel of the 1800s, Victorian-era grandeur, and the ongoing prominence of well-known citizens who lived here.

In 1820, Joseph Smith, at the young age of 14, claimed to have a vision of God, which prompted him to create the Mormon religion. In 1830 he organized the Mormon Church, which began with a membership of six. Now the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has more than eleven million members worldwide. Each year thousands of people flock to the area to attend the Hill Cumorah Pageant, a great outdoor theatrical production depicting the beginning of the Mormon religion. Palmyra’s diverse religious history can been seen in the center of town where four churches stand on four corners of Main Street. Winston Churchill’s maternal grandfather, Leonard Jerome, worked as an apprentice in a village store in Palmyra in the 1830’s. Then, after completing his education at Princeton, he became a partner in his uncle’s law practice here.William Phelps was a vital citizen who served needs of locals and travelers with his general store, tavern, boarding house and bakery, all housed in one building, erected in 1826. The William Phelps General Store and Home Museum has remained intact with original merchandise, furnishings and artifacts.

In 1856, John M. Jones changed the face of the printing industry when he opened a ompany that for 63 years produced and exported printing presses and cutters. The Print Shop Museum houses some of the finest printing equipment ever made.This Alling Coverlet Museum on William Street houses the largest collection of handwoven coverlets in the United States. The Palmyra Historical Museum is a former hotel and tavern that includes 23 rooms displaying over 200 years of Palmyra’s history and its influence on American life and culture.Visitors to this town of living history can walk the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, explore the Market Street Historic District, and even hunt for ghosts. The William Phelps General Store and Palmyra Historical Museum come alive at night during the Ghost Tours that can be experienced here.Palmyra hosts celebrations and events that depict its quintessential rustic charm that are sure to delight. Enjoy local talent when this year’s Canaltown Days festivities open with the sounds of the Towpath Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps and the Palmyra Macedon Select Choir singing the National Anthem. The Lock 52 Ramblers will play Dixie for everyone’s listening pleasure. Right before the Horse Drawn Wagon Parade, the Fiddlers of the Genesee will get us all in the stomping mood, and Denim & Lace will show us the newest line dances. Who is Alicia Lynch? (This is hard talking about yourself!) Well first and foremost I’m a life-long Village resident and wife of Tom Lynch for 32 years. Mother to Wendi, Ashley and Patrick, who are all married and happily providing me with three grandchildren so far, another one due in December, which will even the count to two girls and two boys.

What do you do?• I have been the Village Clerk since April 1996, as well as the Village Treasurer since December 2003.

• I have been on the Palmyra Community Library Board of Directors for four years.

• I am on a fundraising committee that will be putting on a Mystery Theater Dinner for the library on October 29th. It will include a silent auction with some fantastic items.

• I am a member of the Village of Palmyra’s Loan Committee.

• I am an Elder of the Western Presbyterian Church.

• For the past eight years I have been involved in the Angel Tree project, which provides Christmas gifts to those in need. Along with the Clothing Cupboard, these are two of my most rewarding pastimes.

• I became the unofficial Chair of the Clothing Cupboard which is an idea I had three years ago to provide clothing to those in need. A partnership was

formed between the Western Presbyterian Church, Zion Episcopal, Palmyra Reformed Church, United Methodist and St. Annes’ Catholic Churches. It operates on the same premise as the Food Cupboard but re-distributes good used clothing to needy.

• Last and foremost, I have been a member of Canaltown Days Committee for about 25 years. With my husband, we chaired the Flea Market for about 20 years and I believe I’ve been the treasurer for about 10 years.

What inspires you and what do you love about Palmyra? I love what a fantastic community Palmyra is, and I see it demonstrated every day. Being part of the Canaltown Days committee, you realize how strong our sense of community is here. It is the largest fund raising event for many, many organizations and so many volunteers take part and support it, not to mention our fearless leader, Tom Klemann. If you’re thinking about getting involved in anything, you should start here—what fun. The Clothing Cupboard, the Angel Tree project are both fine examples of the generosity of our community. It truly is a great place to live and raise a family.

Why are you excited about being the Grand Marshall? Are you kidding me? Do you know why I got involved with the Canaltown Days to begin with? So I could get one of the best seats for the best parade in upstate New York! What a kick to be the Grand Marshall, my mom would be so proud! This is as good as getting Lions Club Woman of the Year last November! I know it sounds like bragging but it is still something that I’m proud of.

Civil War Encampment with the 28th New York Volunteer Infantry

Experience history on the west lawn of the Zion Episcopal church with an authentic Civil War encampment, including drill and firing demonstrations. The Twenty-Eighth New York Volunteer Infantry is a Civil War era reenacting group which is dedicated to recreating and

remembering the lives of men from the upstate New York area who fought to preserve the Union during the 1861 to 1865 war. Members attend living history events, parades, memorial services, and battle events across the Eastern United States throughout the year.

Get ready for the biggest and boldest Canaltown Days Art Show and Sale yet! Once again, the show is being sponsored by the Palmyra-Macedon Rotary Club, and we thank them for their continuing generosity and support. The show will be held Saturday, September 17th from 11:30 am to 6:30 pm at the Zion Episcopal Parish Center, located at the corner of Canandaigua Street and Main Street.

This year we have the privilege of introducing Antoinette Magaletta McClure of Shortsville as our art show judge. Owner of Rainmaker Designs, McClure and partner Dan McClure produce one of a kind gold and silver jewelry, enameling, jewelry boxes and custom furniture. Clients are worldwide, in countries as far away as Australia. Featured in numerous magazines, their most recent success came in March 2009 when one of their signature pieces, The Carosello Garden Chair, was presented with the “hottest new product” award at the Rochester Home and Garden Show. We will be continuing the judging categories established in the past which include oil/acrylic painting, drawing, photography, youth and Palmyra sections, but we will also be including “altered,” or experimental photography, mixed media, sculpture/wood, and fiber arts/ceramics/jewelry sections as well. As always, ribbons and cash awards will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in several categories and many honorable mentions will be awarded.

There’s a way to jump into the history of the Erie Canal and not get wet! Stroll down memory lane on the original canal trail. Gary Hughes will guide you from Main Street to Canal Street and to the Palmyra Marina, where you will learn about the Erie Canal and the business it created for canal towns. You will have the option to continue to historic Aqueduct Park to view the Aldrich Change Bridge and Erie Canal lock.

Canal walks will be on both Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm and will take approximately an hour and a half. All tours will meet on the sidewalk behind the Information Booth on Main Street. A bus is available to return from the lock.

Brickhouse Antiques

Located in a beautifully restored circa 1860 building at 47 East Main Street, The Brick House Antique Center will be open during Palmyra Canaltown Days. Offering two floors of quality antiques, they now offer a new line of area rugs, including Oriental, braided, traditional, and indoor/outdoor rugs. Canal Walking Tours

This year’s parade steps off promptly at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 17 and will feature 13 marching bands including the York Lions Steel Drum Band, Penn Dixie, and everybody’s favorite gangsters, The Hit Men. There will be performances by the Fingerlakes Drum Line, Towpath Volunteer’s Fife and Drum Corps, the Excelsior Brigade Fife and Drum Corps with their accompanying Civil War Reenacting Group, as well as several local bands. We are pleased to welcome back the CA Palmer Drum and Fife Band, a group that had its beginning in Palmyra and participated in the earliest Canaltown Days Parades. And of course, many local service groups, businesses and political figures will be represented.

The float category this year is a celebration of “America The Beautiful.” The Pal Mac High School Band will lead the parade and perform the National Anthem while the Palmyra American Legion presents the colors. Prior to the parade there will be a performance by the York Lions Steel Drum Band beginning at 3:00 pm at the grandstand. Watch for the Hit Men to accost the audience along the parade route! Don’t forget to stick around for a performance of the Penn Dixie Band at the grandstand after the parade.

been offering ghost hunts, where the happenings of the past, people, and their experiences can been seen, heard or felt by those who dare to explore. Under a watchful eye, allowing for an enjoyable and pleasant experience, your ghost hunt host will walk with you as you watch for ghostly

faces peering through windows or listen for hushed voices saying “hello.” Whether you are a novice or a seasoned hunter, for those who enjoy the unknown, these hunts are especially exciting. Unknown noises, voices, smells and shadows, real and by chance, these unexplainable happenings occur on their own and without warning. Only you can decide what you believe! Enjoy local talent when this year’s Canaltown Days festivities open with the sounds of the Towpath Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps and the Palmyra Macedon Select Choir singing the National Anthem. There will be many local artists including John Denniston of Eva & the Dog Boys, John Barry of F.O.G., and new this year, John Bornheimer of Johnny B.

The Lock 52 Ramblers will play Dixie for everyone’s listening pleasure. Right before the Horse Drawn Wagon Parade, the Fiddlers of the Genesee will get us all in the stomping mood, and Denim & Lace will show us the newest line dances. The Music Makers Big Band is back this year to perform on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend in swinging’ style!

Palmyra’s history is alive and well today, over 200 years later. Once known as the “Queen of Canal Towns,” Palmyra was an important center of trade along the Erie Canal, despite its start as a frontier village. Today Palmyra is an historical and recreational oasis in a countryside community that has preserved and retains much of its original architecture. When strolling through Palmyra you can experience the feel of the 1800s, Victorian-era grandeur, and the ongoing prominence of well-known citizens who lived here.

In 1820, Joseph Smith, at the young age of 14, claimed to have a vision of God, which prompted him to create the Mormon religion. In 1830 he organized the Mormon Church, which began with a membership of six. Now the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has more than eleven million members worldwide. Each year thousands of people flock to the area to attend the Hill Cumorah Pageant, a great outdoor theatrical production depicting the beginning of the Mormon religion. Palmyra’s diverse religious history can been seen in the center of town where four churches stand on four corners of Main Street. Winston Churchill’s maternal grandfather, Leonard Jerome, worked as an apprentice in a village store in Palmyra in the 1830’s. Then, after completing his education at Princeton, he became a partner in his uncle’s law practice here.William Phelps was a vital citizen who served needs of locals and travelers with his general store, tavern, boarding house and bakery, all housed in one building, erected in 1826. The William Phelps General Store and Home Museum has remained intact with original merchandise, furnishings and artifacts.

In 1856, John M. Jones changed the face of the printing industry when he opened a ompany that for 63 years produced and exported printing presses and cutters. The Print Shop Museum houses some of the finest printing equipment ever made.This Alling Coverlet Museum on William Street houses the largest collection of handwoven coverlets in the United States. The Palmyra Historical Museum is a former hotel and tavern that includes 23 rooms displaying over 200 years of Palmyra’s history and its influence on American life and culture.Visitors to this town of living history can walk the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, explore the Market Street Historic District, and even hunt for ghosts. The William Phelps General Store and Palmyra Historical Museum come alive at night during the Ghost Tours that can be experienced here.Palmyra hosts celebrations and events that depict its quintessential rustic charm that are sure to delight. Kevin Wright of K&D Disposal will once again be donating his time and equipment to collect the huge amounts of garbage generated by Canaltown Days. This is not new for Kevin, as he has graciously done it for many years. Festival organizers said they are grateful, as the service saves the festival a considerable amount of money.
