Gary and Rena Haigh are still in shock about thenews.

The couple has been named Grand Marshals of the46th annual Palmyra Canaltown Days parade. The

annual festival celebrating all things Palmyra takesplace Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15. Theparade, one of the highlights of the event, whichdraws thousands to the village, kicks o at 4:00 pm onSaturday. It is quite an honor, Rena said. We are veryhumbled.

For Tom Klemann, chairman of the Canaltown DaysCommittee, honoring the Haighs as Grand Marshalsonly makes sense.

Canaltown Days tries to select people who have givenof themselves to the community, he said. There are

many ways to give back, but I think that volunteerismis one of the best ways to give of ones self. With theirlaundry list of various volunteer activities, it is welldeserved.

For Gary, the honor means they ll some pretty bigshoes, but theyre happy to do it. The people whohave preceded us are the ones that have set the barpretty high on volunteerism, he said. Theyve alsoset great examples for us younger folks. Who wouldnt

want to be following in their footsteps?

Gary and Rena grew up in the Palmyra area, and exceptfor 11 years when Garys job took them to Texas andthen Georgia, the couple has always called Palmyra

home. In fact, when they decided to move back to NewYork, Gary and Rena chose Palmyra. Renas parents,Dick and Jean Edwards, were still living in Palmyra atthe time and they had instilled a great love for thecommunity in Rena. For the Haighs, Palmyra oereda safe place to raise their children, good schools, anexceptional community center and library.

Palmyra has a real sense of community, Rena said.Palmyra people see a need and work on that need.(They) understand that we are neighbors and worktogether to help m ake this a terric community.

Rena, who retired a year ago from Creative EnvironmentChildrens Center in Macedon, has since thrown herselfinto volunteering. She is a driver with the We Careprogram to transport people to doctor s appointments. She is an elder at the Western Presbyterian Church, where she said they have expanded their communityinto Kenya, where the church is helping to raise moneyfor shoes for children and bringing water to a village.

Rena is also an active member of the Palmyra-Macedon

Gary and Rena Haigh have been named the 2013 CanaltownDays parade Grand Marshals. The couple have been actively

volunteering in a community they love and take pride in. Gary has

been helping with Canaltown Days for about 30 years. Tammy

No pets, please! The reasons why pets are notallowed at Canaltown Days are largely due to theweather, the volume of people, and a lack of shadeand water to help them cool of. Although your petmay be typically well-mannered, the large numberof unfamiliar people around a festival environmentcan make your pet act dierently.

It is best to keep in mind that some people arentcomfortable around animals and are even quitefrightened of dogs. There are also those who dontknow how to behave appropriately with your petand that can become a dangerous situation ina crowded place. Finally, cleanup after pets andanimals in close proximity to food preparation maycreate an unhealthy environment for both your petand visitors to Canaltown Days.

Because of safety concerns, along with pets, no

bikes, rollerblades, or skateboards are allowed atthe festival.

s part of the 2013 CanaltownDays celebration, a specialhorse-drawn wagon and

carriage parade is planned forSunday, September 15 at 2 p.m.

he parade will start at theFairgrounds and pass throughMain Street.

he nostalgic demonstration ofhorses, wagons, carriages, andpeople will be an attempt to

epict the role horses played inransportation during the early

anal era.he horse, while not the only means,as by far the most popular and speedy

mode of transportation available duringhe early canal years.

Business depended heavily on horsedrawn wagons to deliver goods to them

ith which to work or to sell. The familyhorse and buggy was necessary for

many reasons. It provided the means

ith which to fetch provisions fromhe general store, to take the family tochurch on Sunday, to visit the neighbors,o go for help in an emergency, and even

to provide the young men of the familywith a suitable courting vehicle.

The ner (lighter) breeds served thefamily transportation needs and lightcommercial duties, such as transportingthe traveling salesman as he made hisassigned rounds.

The heavier draft horse provided themuscle to pull the heavily-laden freightwagons. Grain, lumber, and other heavymaterials were transported across the

land to and from the canal boats onwagons pulled by these great animals.

Come out and enjoy the parade!

Canaltown Days is special for Gary and Rena. It was begunwith the idea of presenting an activity that brought thecommunity together while raising money for not-for-prot groups in Palmyra, Rena said.

Best of all, its seeing people that you havent seen in a

Canaltown Days, said Gary, falls neatly under the Pal-MacRotary motto, The club has fun and gets things done.

In Palmyra, we have many clubs and organizations thatare given the opportunity to raise money for their variousorganizations via the Canaltown Days format, he said. Wemake it fun and get it done. Cant ask for m ore than that.

One short block north of the Canaltown Days festivities onPalmyras Main Street is the reason for the celebration theErie Canal, the waterway that made New York the EmpireState and opened the American Middle West to the world.

It was no coincidence that DeWitt Clinton, the NYS Governor

responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal, had been, not too many years earlier, Mayor of New York City. As mayorof New York, he prepared his city for the inevitable growth heoresaw. To the north of the occupied portion of Manhattan

island, he laid out a grid system of roads for the homes andbuildings which would be required. Mayor Clinton is alsocredited with urging ship owners to develop and adhere toa regular schedule of operation. Prior practice was to waitor a full load before departing.

One cannot help but wonder just when the idea of a canalacross New York State rst occurred to Clinton, but his

actions as mayor and his determination to go forward after

being rebued by President Thomas Jeerson indicate itsimportance to him and for that we should all be thankful.

The Erie Canal, begun in 1817, opened in sections and wasformally dedicated in 1825. Palmyra, however, becamea canal town in 1823, and was a bustling community and

commercial center. With a population of approximately3,500, Palmyra was twice the size of Rochesterville, about20 miles to the west. The immediate success of the canalled to the construction of the enlarged canal , wider anddeeper than the original. These were the canals of the draftanimals and tow paths. Another forward thinking Governor,Theodore Roosevelt, was responsible for the constructionof what is technically the NYS Barge Canal, the one we nowtoday, in 1918. To those of us who love it, however, it is theErie.

The canal basin you will nd one block north of Main Street

came into being due to the eorts of two forward thinking

Palmyra mayors, Jim Elliott and his successor, Peter Wilson. Thanks to a HUD grant, the basin was carved out of awetland area. A boardwalk was built and the development oftodays marina began. In the years that followed, amenitieshave been addedinformational kiosks, picnic tables and

benches, wi-, and, most recently, thanks to a grant fromthe NYS Canal Corporation, a Comfort Station and picnicpavilion. With the help of another Canal Corporation grant,a boat launch is currently being constructed approximatelyone half mile to the east of the marina. Interesting note:NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo was the head of HUD at thetime of the original award that began the construction inPalmyra.

Owned and maintained by the Village of Palmyra , the Portof Palmyra marina and the Erie Canal are a part of Palmyrashistory and a major asset in the future of Palmyra, Queen of

    Canal Towns. Vicky Daly
