service and outreach programs to benefit youth throughout our county. She has been an advocate for school

herself.

Distinguished Professional Service Award

Selected: Dr. Aubrey Sejuit

Dr. Aubrey Sejuit has served as an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator or the Clinical Mental Health

(CMHC) counseling program at Lenoir Rhyne University's (LRU) campus in Columbia for the last two and half

years. In that short time, Dr. Sejuit has worked to grow the program, culminating in two consecutive years of

the largest recruited cohorts in the program’s history on the Columbia campus. This work has also brought LRU

to the awareness of community agencies previously unaware of LRU’s presence in Columbia. Dr. Sejuit’s

efforts as a counselor educator to do stop at the classroom door or the campus boundary. Dr. Sejuit is training

her students to be change agents in the counseling room and in the communities they will serve. A tireless

advocate for equality and diversity, Dr. Sejuit models the role of counselor through work on university and

community committees and in filling the breech in services for vulnerable populations on campus. A veteran

herself, Dr. Sejuit brought Green Zone Ally training to LRU. Specialized to meet the unique needs of military

and veterans on campus, Green Zone Allies are a resource for an identified at-risk population and lets military

personnel find safe places and people to talk to about issues that could derail their academic plans.

Outstanding Counselor Award

Selected: Dr. Frederic Mau

Dr. Mau is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and is board certified as a National Certified

Counselor, Telemental Health professional, and Hypnotherapist. He was the Awards Luncheon speaker at the

2016 SCCA conference and currently serves on the SCCA Executive Board. Dr. Mau believes counselors have a

unique and powerful opportunity to help in the face of the opioid crisis – by providing physical relief for clients

suffering physical pain. He developed and trains counselors as well as other mental health and medical

professionals in Relaxation-Based Pain Relief, a workshop that results in certification for successful

participants.

An international speaker, this fall Dr. Mau will again present this year at conferences in the United Kingdom

and Switzerland, and he has been invited to keynote the Australian Hypnotherapists Association 70th

anniversary World Conference. Dr. Mau is the author of three books, Emotion: The Power of Change; A

Different Reality; and the Relaxation-Based Pain Relief Certification Manual.

The most important work we have as counselors is to meet clients where they are, and help them find a path to

healing. In his practice, Dr. Mau is happy to help clients find that path whatever the challenge – trauma,

conversion issues, anxiety, depression, and phobia.

There’s also still time to take action to support Medicare coverage for Counselors! Legislation has been

introduced to allow counselors to participate in Medicare. You can help get this legislation passed by contacting

your legislators today and asking them to co-sponsor the Mental Health Access Improvement Act (S.

286/H.R. 945). Find more information at NBCC Voter Voice.

Ethics Committee Update:

New Professionals Self Care

Time and time again we are told by our professors about the importance of self-care, but what does that really

mean? As new professionals, we have to follow the code of ethics with our clients; however, there are no ethical

codes when discussing self-care. Practicing self-care will give us the stamina to be able to fully engage with our

clients. It is vital for our physical health, as well as mind and soul. As counselors, we are expected to handle

other individual's problems and always be emotionally available. Over time, this concept creates burnout. By

practicing effective self-care, we can be better, more effective counselors.

New NBCC requirements

Because of new NBCC requirements for Approved Continuing Education Provider status, we are going to be changing the

way we award Continuing Education hours. NBCC now requires us to provide proof that participants are present for the

number of NBCC hours indicated on the certificate of completion, therefore we will be using a new system to check

participants into and out of each session, they attend. We will be using Expo Pass a software designed to keep track of your

sessions, scan you in and out of sessions, generate an online evaluation of sessions, and to calculate your continuing

education hours.

Expo pass will need to be downloaded on your phone prior to entering any of the sessions. You will find Expo Pass in the

App Store or Google Play Store app. The nice thing is that it is offline ready if the internet connections are not working

well at the hotel. We will send more details on how to download the app and register to all the conference registrants.
