Sharing their inner truths
PALM CITY — The health warnings are back up and it’s hard to say when they’ll be taken down. In recent weeks waters around Charlie Leighton Park, by the Palm City Bridge,
have had elevated levels of en-teroceoccus, bacteria found in feces. “What we’re sampling for is a
type of bacteria that’s in our intestinal tract,” said Todd Re-inhold, Environmental manager of the Florida Department of

[email protected] CITY — Horse races don’t
end this close sometimes. In Jan-uary the Equine Rescue & Adop-tion Foundation found out it had until April 30 to find and get into a new home. Up to that time the foundation thought it had until November or later to move. In horserace talk, the founda-
tion was suddenly on the head of the stretch, but there was noth-ing past the finish line to see. The hunt for a new home went from a canter to full quarter-horse gal-lop. Thanks to some extraordinary help, the foundation closed on an 8.5 acre property the first week of April. It’s at 6400 S.W. Martin Highway, Palm City. Plans are to move the entire rescue operation,

Health in Martin County. Those bacteria, he said, aren’t
particularly dangerous to most healthy adults. However, he said they can be indicators of more serious hazards in the water, and should be taken seriously. “When you’re talking about dif-
ferent types of bacteria, there are different doses needed to make you sick,” Reinhold said. Reinhold said the health depart-
ment tests 11 places in Martin’s waters for bacteria and, as of press time, Leighton Park is the only place it’s found levels elevat-ed enough to post warnings. “People that have weakened
immune systems are at a higher risk than a healthy adults,” Rein-hold said. “There’s a risk to any-one. The fact it’s present, there’s a risk to anyone that comes in contact with (the bacteria).” Where the bacteria came from
is a question. They can be from human or animal feces and made their way to the St. Lucie River in many ways. Reinhold said that there are tests that can determine what the sources of the bacteria are — storm water runoff, pets, wildlife or human sewage — be-cause different animals have different kinds of enteric bacte-ria. However, he said the health department doesn’t do that sort of testing. Reinhold also said the depart-
ment’s testing is very limited, so exact health risks are hard to know. But any health-advisory signs are worrisome to many. Last summer about 80 health
warnings were posted around the St. Lucie River and other water-ways in Martin. Tests from river samples showed that microcystis
aeruginosa, a type of algae also called cyanobacteria, were releas-ing toxins harmful to animals and people. Much of the blame for that went to Army Corps of En-gineers’ releases of nutrient-rich waters from Lake Okeechobee. More recently, news that a local
fisherman caught a sheepshead fish with a large lesion in Bessey Creek got a lot of folks talking about 1998. That’s a year many remember for innumerable sick and dying fish in the St. Lucie River. Indeed, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Com-mission had verified reports of 17 fish with lesions in Palm City that year. Additionally, the Florida Depart-
ment of Health in St. Lucie post-ed avoid-contact warnings for the North Fork of the St. Lucie from River Park Marina at Prima Vista Boulevard south to Martin Coun-ty. Testing there also showed unacceptably elevated levels of enteric bacteria. Reinhold said most folks can
boat with confidence on the river. He said the very old or very young do have more risks with any bacteria contact. The most likely health risks for those who ingest or come in contact with the con-taminated water include upset stomach, diarrhea, eye irritations and skin rashes.“Cuts, that’s how the bacteria
get into your skin,” Reinhold said. He said those who come in
contact with the hazardous water should wash contact spots with antibacterial soap.
The department tests weekly for bacteria. Results are available at www.floridahealth.gov/CHD/Martin/Beach_and_River_Sam-pling.html.

along with its dozen on-property horses, by the end of the month. “We’re very happy to stay in Palm
City,” Randy Kinder, executive di-rector, said. “We have worked very hard to be a good gift to the com-munity to help the community.”One of the foundation’s fans is
Sheriff William Snyder. Last May he publicly appealed to the com-munity to help the foundation find and afford a new home. “We were afraid they’d end up
in Palm Beach County,” Snyder said in a phone interview. “When we thought we were going to lose them, I was like, ‘What are we go-ing to do?’” The foundation takes in horses
from the Sheriff’s Office. In a sin-gle incident last year, the founda-tion took seven horses and four donkeys for the Sheriff’s Office. In all the foundation took 15 horses for the Sheriff’s Office last year. “They’re really an important re-
source for us,” Snyder said. “The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have a res-
cue barn at all.”For nine years, the foundation
has been at the Caring Fields Ani-mal Sanctuary, 6452 S.W. Markel St., Palm City. The Pegasus Foun-dation owns the property. The Yarmouth Port, Mass. animal-wel-fare organization had let the foun-dation and Hobe Sound Animal Protection League stay without charge. However, it opted to sell the property to fund some of other projects. The league runs a 180-resident
no kill cattery. It found a new home last year. It, too, stayed in Palm City. Kinder said the new property
cost about $400,000. She said the foundation got a 30-year mortgage with a very low interest rate, and a sponsor who’ll pay the interest for a decade. “We want to pay it off very early,”
Kinder said. The new property has nine pad-
docks, 12 stalls, a storage barn and lighted arena. The foundation is at www.eraf.
org. Its number is (772) 220-0150.

We in the medical field have often heard the phrase, “Do no harm.” Taking this a little fur-ther, I’d like to offer, “If you can’t do something good for some-one, it is better to do nothing for them.” Everyone probably does not
share my affection for this time of year, but with Easter week approaching, it is definitely a time where I look to do good for others. Doing good can be some-thing that costs very little and all it takes is a little thought, creativ-ity and time. The investment that you put into others by doing good can give a satisfactory yield that will last and pay itself forward to others. Once you determine that you
want to do good, the next step is to determine how you will do good. Fortunately, most of us still have a conscience and do not have to ponder long on what is doing good and what is do-ing bad or not so good. We can use ourselves and our personal situation to determine how to do good. What do we not like to do, what do we not like to deal with, and what seems a pain to us? If you are like most, you will share a lot of those dislikes with other people you know. Maybe you hate taking out the trash. Chances are, someone in your office may feel the same way about the task.
Look around and find that trash can that is overflowing and sur-prise the person and empty their trash for them. It costs nothing, takes little
time and results in you removing a disliked task from someone by doing this good deed. Look for the opportunities to lighten the load on someone else. You may re-move that straw that is about to break their back. When and where do we do
good? I’d venture to say every-
where. Life has a good way of stressing us all and people in general need and appreciate good things being done for them. Let that person into traffic from the on-ramp, although traffic is thick and you might be running late. Take the unleashed dog you find and hook him up to a leash and walk your neighborhood to see who it might belong to. Notice that person in the checkout line who might have to put some things back because they don’t have enough money and offer to pay for the put back items. The opportunities are all around us if we look. Again, the effort it takes is not much, but the impact it will have is extremely powerful. Finally, to whom do we do
good? EVERYONE! Especially those who look, dress, and act differently than you. If we serve and do good only for those of whom we personally like and approve, are we not just showing “self-love”? Look for people to do good things for and you will see it change the world around you and change your own life for the better. I’ll paraphrase one of my fa-
vorite stories. A small boy is on the beach where thousands of starfish have washed up. The little boy is picking them up, one by one, and is throwing them back into the water. A man sees the little boy’s futile attempt at saving the enormous amount of beached starfish and walks up to talk to the boy.
“Son, what are you doing?” The little boy answered, “I’m throw-ing starfish back into the sea because if I don’t they’re going to die.” “But there are thousands of
starfish. In the larger scheme of things you’re not going to make much of a difference to all these starfish.” The little boy looked up at him,
stooped down again to pick up another starfish and, gently but quickly, flung it back into the ocean. “It’s going to make a big differ-
ence to that one” he replied. We might not be able change
the whole world with doing good to those we meet each day, but we can possibly change that per-son’s whole world. Do good — it isn’t hard to do.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Healthcare Leadership Council, a coalition of leaders of the nation’s premier health care companies and organizations, today honored U.S. Representative Patrick Mur-phy as a “Champion of Health-care Innovation” at an award ceremony in Washington, DC. Representative Murphy was
honored at the Council’s annu-al Healthcare Innovations Expo on Capitol Hill. The day-long event is dedicated to showcas-ing new developments in health care technologies, treatments and practices. This year’s event featured, among other exhibits, new transcatheter heart valve
technologies, medication to treat hypertension in newborns and improved transmission and uses of healthcare data to improve patient care. “Innovation is a necessity,
not an option, in addressing the challenges facing our healthcare system. To increase accessibili-ty to high-quality care, improve patient outcomes and strength-en cost-efficiency requires con-stant improvement in the tools, technologies, medicines and approaches used to prevent and treat disease and elevate well-ness,” said HLC president Mary R. Grealy. “We applaud Repre-sentative Murphy’s leadership, dedication and vision in advanc-ing the quality and cost-effective-ness of American healthcare.”

During April, think about the childrenTREASURE COAST — Of the
432 child deaths reported to Flor-ida’s abuse hotline in 2012, 122 were caused by abuse and ne-glect, often at the hands of their parents.During the month of April,
which is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, the state’s largest organization dedicated to helping children and families hopes to spread the word about its services with the hope of re-ducing the senseless statistics.“The month highlights, unfortu-
nately, the reality of what is going on in the community, as far as kids being abused and neglected and again, unfortunately, to the extreme that kids are dying,” said Matthew Anderson, program di-rector of Children’s Home Society of Florida on the Treasure Coast.According to an annual report
published in December 2013 by the Child Abuse Death Review Committee, the number of child deaths verified due to abuse or neglect was 122. The number of verified child abuse deaths pro-vided to the committee for review was 118. The report, which was submit-
ted to Gov. Rick Scott, along with the State Senate president and the speaker of the Florida House, aims to eliminate preventable child abuse and neglect deaths, according to its content. The report was compiled from infor-mation from the Florida Abuse Hotline within the Department of Children and Family Services. In Florida, the estimated popu-
lation of children ages 0-17 was 4,024,968 in calendar year 2012. Of those, 868,895 were under the age of 1 year and another 1,077,930 were under the age of 5, the report states. In 2012, 178,451 abuse reports
were called into the abuse ho-tline.Seventy-one child deaths were
caused by neglect and 47 were attributed to abuse. The majority of children who suffered maltreat-ment-related deaths in 2012 were less than three years of age, the report states.Twenty-two child deaths in
2012 were in St. Lucie County, seven in Indian River, two in
Okeechobee and no data was list-ed for Martin County.Increased awareness equals a
decrease in deaths.“Abuse prevention (month) really
strives to highlight programs, ser-vices and resources in the com-munity that families and children can access to prevent that from escalating,” Anderson added. It’s also through education that
the cycle of abuse can cease, An-derson said.CHS offers free programs that
teach childcare techniques and how to make better life choices. One of CHS’s largest programs
that touches the most children is the school-based program, “Teen Life Choices.” The program is offered to middle and high school kids and reaches 5,000 to 6,000 annually, Anderson said.“It teaches them about pregnan-
cy prevention, bullying, self-es-teem and basic life skills,” Ander-son said. The classes also provide stu-
dents who feel endangered with information on who to call and where they could go.The Safe Place program is anoth-
er life-saver, Anderson said. Big yellow signs at local fire stations and Walgreens stores are desig-nated safe places where children can take refuge.“If you don’t feel safe at home,
go to one of these sites we set up and we monitor. If a kid comes to a Safe Place, the staff calls our 24-hour hotline and we send a counselor out to meet with that child, bring them back to our shelter and make sure they’re not going back to an unsafe situa-tion,” Anderson said. “We’ll work with the families to resolve what-ever situation is going on there that is contributing to that child’s fear.”CHS’s shelter is located in St.
Lucie County and serves the Treasure Coast. Close to 250 chil-dren last year used beds at the safe haven. The shelter serves an additional 150 to 200 kids in the four counties. And the number rises each year, Anderson said.Economics could be a factor,
Anderson said.“When the economy really start-
ed to go south, we had a lot of families in a lot of dysfunctional

political demonstrations, and civil unrest occurred throughout Venezuela. The protests erupt-ed largely as a result of the high levels of criminal violence, infla-tion, and chronic scarcity of basic goods. The protesters claim that these are caused by the economic policies of Venezuela’s govern-ment, including strict price con-trols, which allegedly have led to one of the highest inflation rates in the world.[Early protests against crime
began in January 2014, after ac-tress and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her husband
were killed on 6 January 2014 during a roadside robbery, while their five-year-old daughter was in the car. Another act of crime occurred in February, where the attempted rape of a young student on a university campus in San Cristobal led to protests from students over crime; these protests expanded to other cities, where opposition leaders quickly became involved. Student pro-tests coincided with the com-memoration of the Battle of La Victoria on 12 February 1814, during the Venezuelan War of Independence, when the indepen-dence forces armed thousands of college and seminary students at the shortage of troops. This date is also known as National Youth Day.1. Insecurity: Venezuela is one of
the most dangerous countries in the world. Most Venezuelans are afraid to go outside.2. Scarcity: It is increasingly
difficult to get food, medicine, toiletries and basic necessities. There is even an official index of scarcity.3. Corruption: It is increasing-
ly evident at all levels from the lowest public employees to the illegitimate president4. Indoctrination: The govern-
ment requires public employees to attend their political concen-trations under threat of dismiss-al.5. Devaluation: 15 thousand
percent in the past 15 years.6. Inflation: Venezuela has one
of the highest inflation rates in

situations that needed help,” he said. “We had kids living in their car, living out in the woods, things like that. People losing their jobs, their houses.”CHS offers family and individ-
ual counseling and aims to keep parents out of jail, children safe and families intact, Anderson said. All services are free, except for its community mental health program that offers psychiatric services billed through Medicaid.“People know we’re not here to

the more services CHS can offer and the more awareness they can spread, Anderson said.

Candidate Carl Domino aims to help improve employment
Carl Domino Republican www.dominoforcongress.com
TREASURE COAST — Carl Domino is a college student running for Congress. OK, he’s a non-traditional student with unusual things on his college resume — he’s a 20-year Navy veteran who’s done a stint as a state legislator. “I’m interested in Constitution-
al law,” Domino said about his studies at Nova Southeastern Law School. Domino is one of eight Republi-
cans who’d announced candida-cies with the Florida Division of Elections for Florida’s 18th Con-gressional District, which Demo-crat Patrick Murphy now holds. Murphy is running for reelection. The Jupiter investments man-
ager said if elected to Congress his top priority will be economic revitalization. “The creation of jobs, that’s an
umbrella issue,” he said. “We obviously have a 6 plus percent unemployment, but it’s really higher,” he said. The Florida Department of
Economic Opportunity’s Febru-ary jobs report puts the state’s unemployment at 6.1 percent, unchanged from the month before. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are tele-phone interviews with workers. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are count-ed as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previ-ous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemploy-ment,” and it’s difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. “If you take the labor participa-
tion rate it’s 62.8,” Domino said “The last time it was 62.8 was in the Carter Administration.”
The labor force participation rate, or economic activity rate, is the measurement between those in the labor force and the popu-lation of the same age range. The labor force participation rate has trended downward since about the late 1990s. Domino is certain that many want to join or rejoin the workforce, but remain dis-couraged workers. He believes there’s a three-part
formula for improving the jobs market. The first part, he said, has nothing to do with what Con-gress can enact. Rather, Domino said, it’s a matter of how repre-sentatives and senators think and speak. “Humanizing entrepreneurs and
businessmen,” he said. “There seems to be no appreciation for the risks entrepreneurs take.” The second part is seeking
and tapping all available energy resources, such as suspected oil reservoirs that might be under some federally-owned and -man-aged properties. Domino said tapping domestic oil reservoirs is good for more than economic growth. “It’s a matter of national securi-
ty,” he said. The candidate is in favor of
developing alternative energy

sources, too. But, he said they’re widespread use is years if not decades off. “I’ve invested privately in a lot
of alternative energies, but they take time,” Domino said. The third part of his plan is
about reducing. “Get rid of burdensome regula-
tion, which would include (the Af-fordable Care Act),” Domino said. “Obamacare is the granddaddy of burdensome regulation.”On the local front, Domino said
the most important issue for Congress to tackle is environ-mental damage caused by dis-charges of nutrient-rich waters from Lake Okeechobee into local waterways that have fouled the Indian River. Domino said it’s a “bipartisan” concern, and he commended Murphy for his efforts to get funding for projects aimed at reducing and eventually eliminating the discharges. How-ever, Domino said that the proj-ects have state and federal com-ponents and being a Republican with eight years in the Florida House give him advantages over the Democratic congressman. “Unlike Patrick Murphy, I have
the leadership of the (Florida Legislature) on my cell phone,” Domino said He later added, “I’m more likely to get money for these
things, because Republicans will control the (federal) budget for the next few years.”In addition to Domino, the
Florida Division of Elections lists as active Republican candidates Ellen Andel, Brian Lara, Bev-erly Joy Hires, Ilya Katz, Alan Schlesinger, Calvin Deon Turn-quest and Nick Robert Wukoson. Some of those candidates may have dropped their bids by press time. Qualifying for congressional
races is April 28 to May 2. The district is tenuous for both major political parties. Between Martin and St. Lucie counties, there are about slightly more than 107,000 voters registered as Republicans, and about 102,600 Democrats. Some in Martin register Republi-can to vote in the primary elec-tions, since county commission races are often decided in the primary. Another 71,890 voters in the two counties are registered with third parties or no affilia-tion. The primary election will be
on Aug. 26. Early voting will be from Aug. 16 to 23rd. The general election will be on Nov. 4. Ear-ly voting will be from Oct. 20 to Nov. 1. Domino is married to Sharon,
and they have 14-year-old twins, Reagan and Mason. He is 70.

numerous awards and nomina-tions, including a “Chef of the Year” award from the American Culinary Foundation, and a flour-ishing career as executive chef at one of the top-rated hotel club restaurant companies in Amer-ica and the Caribbean, a fierce “cheftestant” on the sixth sea-son of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef: Las Vegas,” and a host of “Bar Rescue New Orleans,” on Spike TV and “Iron Chef” on the Food Network.

Based in Palm City, Nala’s New Life Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to rescuing abused, forgotten and rejected dogs. The organization maintains a true “no kill policy” and save animals regardless of age, breed or health issues. All dogs are vaccinated, micro-chipped, and spayed or neutered before they are eligible for adoption. Last year, Nala’s New Life Res-
cue saved 100 animals from being put down and placed them in loving homes throughout the Treasure Coast. In February, the organization and a team of vol-
unteer pilots traveled across the state to rescue several dogs from a ‘high-kill shelter’ in Chipley, Florida that were scheduled to be euthanized and flew them to foster families in Fort Myers and Stuart. For more than 20 years Barbi
Moline has worked tirelessly on behalf of animals in need. She was recently honored as a “Foster Family of The Year” at the ‘2014 Pegasus Wings Awards’ for her hard work and dedication finding loving homes for her rescues. For more information, please call

Audubon of Martin County honors photography contest winners MARTIN COUNTY — A mixed
crowd of artists, environmental-ists and birding enthusiasts came together at Memorial Park in Downtown Stuart at Walk on the Wild Side to honor the winners of the Audubon of Martin County A Bird’s Eye View Photography Contest. One hundred entries were received and 18 entries were honored in categories including birds, wilderness landscapes, flo-ra & fauna, and student entries. The three highest honors, “Best of Show,” “Students” and “People’s Choice Award” earned cash prizes of $100 each. Proving it wasn’t beginner’s
luck, for the second year in a row the People’s Choice award was presented to Lisa Renee Ludlum for her photograph entitled “Con-
nected Spirit.” The photo was taken using a Nikon D800. “I love nature, and photography
is my true passion,” Ludlum said. “I am honored to win the photo contest for the second year in a row. As a member of the Audu-bon of Martin County chapter, it’s also gratifying to donate my winnings back to the local Audu-bon chapter so we can continue to promote environmental ed-ucation and awareness in our community. Along with winning the People’s Choice award, Lisa won first place and an honorable mention in the “Birds” category, second and third place in “Flora & Fauna,” and third place in the “Wilderness Landscapes” catego-ry.” “Our Audubon chapter’s goal is

Martin Downs Sports Resort introduces new food and beverage managers
PALM CITY— Sports, fun, family and great food — a recipe for success at the Martin Downs Sports Resort in Palm City. Building on a solid foundation of ingredients, the Martin Downs Sports Resort is pleased to an-nounce the addition of Vince and Lisa Esposito to their staff as the food and beverage managers. The Martin Downs Sports
Resort had good timing when they found the Espositos. While the Espositos have been in the food business for more than 57 years, as Vince grew up in his family’s deli and owning multiple businesses from pizzerias, bis-tros and restaurants, they were looking for a new opportunity locally. The new additions bring an impressive array of experience in the food industry, including
having owned Mangia Bocellis in Palm City until 2011. In addition to their local presence, Espositos had a few moments in the lime-light when they were featured on the Cooking Channel in a series of Mo Rocca’s “My Grand-mother’s Ravioli” — Pizza, Pasta and Pumping Iron — where they shared their tried-and-true rec-ipes, some of which are already being shared with the sports resort’s members. “We are excited about the ex-
perience Vince and Lisa bring to the table for our members. Their passion for food and for family, as well as their connection with the community, make it a great fit,” said Martin Downs Sports Resort owner Deanna Kernan. Vince and Lisa hail from the

PALM CITY — Martin County cops have dangerous jobs. Detec-tive Ben Fennell. His is particu-larly dangerous. “It is potentially one of the most
dangerous jobs,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said. “He’s going after armed poachers.” Usually by himself. Backup is
miles away, and between Fennell and other cops are lots of land, lots of trees, and often lots of poor roads. The Palm City native is an agricultural crimes detec-tive. His beat usually has him in Palm City and parts westward. The Pegasus Foundation of Hobe
Sound recently recognized Fen-nell with the Pegasus Wing Award for Public Safety Beyond the Call. The foundation gave him the award for saving about “one doz-en neglected, malnourished and abused horses in three separate cases.” Fennell agreed to an interview
reluctantly. The 13-year law-en-forcement veteran is quiet, re-served. Almost shy. He talks
about the people he must con-front with respect and compas-sion. He speaks with as much compassion for the animals he’s charged to protect. “People think they are horse res-
cuers,” Fennell said. “I call them horse hoarders. They don’t realize they can’t afford these large ani-mals.” Fennell said most animal ne-
glect cases start with tips. Neigh-bors and equestrians driving by properties sometimes see horses that appear extremely unhealthy and report it. Sometimes the poor health is likely due to a lack of space. There are differing opinions about how much space horses need to remain healthy, but it’s widely accepted that without enough room horses get sickly. Oftentimes, Fennell said, it’s because well-meaning people don’t have the financial resourc-es needed to properly care for horses. “This lady was hording horses
and thought she was doing good,” Fennell said. But one had developed lamini-

serve natural ecosystems in Mar-tin County – focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats - through education, advocacy and public awareness. Audubon of Martin County’s
main office is located at the Pos-sum Long Nature Center in Stu-art, Florida. The office maintains an extensive collection of taxider-my specimens. The Sanctuary it-self is adjacent to the Center and includes an almost 5-acre urban
forest that is open to the pub-lic. Their wetland sanctuary has attracted many birds, including wood ducks, woodstorks, great blue heron, great egret, and many others. Recently, yellow-crowned night herons have been spotted nesting on property. Audubon of Martin County is located at 621 S.E. Palm Beach Road in Stuart. tus, which is also called found-er, a breakdown in the internal structure of the hoof wall and coffin bone. The condition is ex-tremely painful. The woman was unable to get proper veterinarian care, and for months had been trying to treat the animal with home remedies. Fennell said he tries to educate folks how horses are affected by these decisions before asserting his authority to remove them. “We’re like the voices for these
animals,” he said. Not all the animals Fennell pro-
tects are pets. “Gators are being slaughtered
out west,” Founder said. “We’re
finding animals on the side of the road with their tails cut off.” That is, poachers are killing
gators and keeping only the tails for meat. The rest of the alligators are left to rot. Snyder said Fennell also has to
deal with equipment and cattle thefts, and when the price of diesel spikes, fuel theft. He said Fennell, like all cops, depends on community members giving tips. To report neglected or abused
animals, wildlife and agricultural crimes, call the Sheriff’s Office at (772) 220-7266.The Pegasus Foundation is an

Disco legends perform at Lyric
STUART — If you’ve been to a wedding in the past four de-cades and you’re between 4 and 104, you’ve gotten up to dance to “Y.M.C.A,’ by the Village Peo-ple. The disco group, founded in 1977, has sold more than 100 million records and taught gener-ations at least four letters of the alphabet. The group comes to the Lyric
Theatre April 16 for two shows. Eric Anzalone, who joined the group in 1995 and plays The Biker, and Alex Briley, an original member, who plays The Soldier, spoke in separate interviews about the jobs that changed their lives. Anzalone studied theater and
music at the University of Miami. In 2012, he completed an online degree from Arizona State summa cum laude in film and media. “I’ve been a musician my whole
life,” he said. “The journey started as an actor, and I’ve been acting and doing films on my own. I still had an interest. About five years ago, I thought, ‘I’ve been in the industry over 20 years. Maybe I should find out more about it.’ I spend so much time on planes and in hotels. If I could get a degree and learn the business I’m in, that was awesome.” Anzalone found that going back
to school was not as easy as he had expected. “I was overwhelmed. I thought
it was easy. What’s homework? I spent quite a few nights in tears. I’ll never regret going back. You’re

Teens take theatrical trip to tropical island
STUART — StarStuck Performing Arts Center has had great luck with the Broadway musical, “Once on this Island.” In 2007, Jennifer and Peter Jones took a
group of students to Atlanta for a theater conference. They won several awards for their production of the musical. “The big thing that came of it was that
StarStruck was noticed on a national stage,” Jennifer Jones said. “We got a call from MTI, (the licensing agency for many shows) asking us to be a pilot school for new works, debuting either the school or junior version of shows. “We produced the world premiere of the
school edition of ‘Rent’ and ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and the world premiere of ‘Beauty and the Beast Junior.’ It put us on the map in a very big way.” StarStuck’s Teen Stars will present the show
April 17-19. Jennifer Jones spoke recently about some of the legacies from that trip to Atlanta. “They told us how they loved to see how
we mixed ages,” she said. “We were one of the only schools with a huge mix of ages. We had children from 7-8 all the way to 18. The judges were in awe of how well they worked together. When Peter and I were talking about a spring show, we thought it was time for an all-school show. The seniors are graduating
and it’s good for the youngsters to see how the older kids work.” The one-act musical has book and lyrics by
Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. It is set in the French Antilles and is the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who uses love to unite people of different social classes. “There’s a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ theme,” Jones
said. “It’s based on the same story as ‘The Lit-tle Mermaid.’ The young girl, Ti Moune, falls in love with the wealthy prince. There is the difference in social class. It’s tough when peo-ple are grounded in old-fashioned beliefs that go back hundreds and thousands of years.” The show has four gods who are supposed
to make decisions. “It’s ‘a tale as old as time,’” Jones said. “It’s
two people who aren’t supposed be in love who fall in love. The gods battle it out and Ti Moune is the pawn.” The cast of the family-friendly show includes
Becca Suskauer as Ti Moune; Kim Dodt as Mama Eurlie, Ti Moune’s mother; Josh Bahos as Ton Ton, Ti Moune’s father; Justin Wagner as Daniel, the Prince; Kevin Paul as Erzulie, the God of Love; Andrew Rodgers as Agwe, the God of Water; Christina Reagan Mama Ge, the God of Death; and Katie Rodgers as Asaka, the God of Earth. Kevin Paul and Katie Rodgers will reunite
May 9-10 for the wonderful musical, “The Last Five Years.” Paul, son of Jennifer and

never too old.” Anzalone got his role as The
Biker by answering an ad. He was working as an actor in New York and saw an ad in the Village Voice, a local paper. “It was before
the Internet,” he said. “I was looking for a rock band and saw an ad that a well-known group was looking for a singer with a passport. I said, ‘Wow, they must be touring’ and put together a demo. Not a month later, I got a call from the Village Peo-ple. I thought it was a tribute or wedding band. I said, ‘The real Village Peo-ple?’ They said, ‘Yeah,’ and I said ‘OK.’” Anzalone hit it off with the
group and has never looked back. He can’t imagine how many times they have sung “Y.M.C.A.” “I can’t even give an estimate,”
he said. “As much as I love singing that song on stage, when I’m not on stage and hear it, I don’t know what to do. If I’m at a wedding, I look for an exit. My daughter’s preschool did it. They do it every year. All the parents and teachers knew she was my daughter and when the song came on, all the cameras turned to me. I’m videotaping my daugh-ter. It was a little mortifying. It was about the kids.” Alex Briley, The Soldier, is a
minister’s son who grew up sing-ing in church. He studied voice at the University of Hartford and appeared in several off-Broadway shows. Briley had auditioned for a
touring company of “Bubbling Brown Sugar” and gotten a call back. While he waited to hear from them, he learned of produc-ers forming a small group called the Village People. “They were ready to go and
I thought about it and said,
‘Yeah,’” he recalled. “I was in the group. Right after that, there was a call that they were calling off the touring companies. I had a job. Maybe I made the right deci-sion, because here I am 37 years later.” Briley said people have followed
them through the years. “There were
the slaves to vinyl in the 1970s,” he said “They reared their children to disco. It’s the memories it brings back. It’s the music from an aerobics class. At some point, they’ve listened to a happy song. At one show, there was an elder-ly couple who hadn’t exercised in 45 years. They finally got to exercise to ‘Y.M.C.A.’” Briley, who
does the vocal arrangements for the group, said to expect high energy at the show. “There’s lots of energy, even at
our age” he said. “We enjoy what we do. We encourage audience participation. It’s nice to see the audience want to get up and dance. In New Zealand, every au-dience member was out of their seats by the end of the first song. Everyone was in the aisles.” Briley said the audiences spans
generations. Sometimes grand-parents and grandchildren come together. Briley said that he and the crew don’t take it for grant-ed. They recently recorded dance music with K.C. of K.C and the Sunshine Band and are grateful to still be around. “It’s in honor of performers who
have retired and hung up their disco shoes and polyester suits,” he said. (We’ll continue) as long as we have the energy we do.” The Village People come to the

MARTIN COUNTY — Treasure Coast Community Church is in-viting the Treasure Coast Com-munity to take part in its Eighth Annua spectacular Easter Cele-bration. “Easter Eggstravaganza 2014”! The fun set for Sunday, April 20, on the soccer fields at Pine-apple Park in Jensen Beach just off Jensen Beach Boulevard. The event will host a helicopter egg drop, face painting, games, tons of free candy, and a lot of fun along with hot dogs and drinks available for purchase. For all of those children that
dream about candy falling from the sky, Easter 2014 will be the opportunity for those dreams come true. The mad dash for Eas-ter eggs will take place at 12:30 p.m., at which time the helicopter will drop 25,000 eggs onto the huge soccer field. Children ages birth through fifth grade will then be let loose to gather as many
plastic eggs as they can. Parents with children 3 years and older are asked to remain on the side-lines. The plastic eggs can then be redeemed for candy and some of the brightly colored eggs will be filled with money. Please arrive early to take part in all of the events of the day. Treasure Coast Community Church, also known as TC3, is always striving to be the church that takes care of the families in our community and puts the fun back into children’s church. The Easter Eggstravanganza will begin at 11:30 am at Pineapple Park in Jensen Beach just off Jensen Beach Boulevard. All fam-ilies are also welcome to attend Easter Sunday service at Trea-sure Coast Community Church, services will be held at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. TC3’s Sunday morning services are located at 20 N.E. Dixie Highway in Jensen Beach. Children’s Sunday school programs are also offered at both services. Please visit us at www.tc3.org.

Audition dates are still avail-able for music students in the four-county area, northern Palm Beach and south Brevard counties for public radio sta-tion WQCS / 88.9 FM’s popular Young Musicians Spotlight, a one-hour radio special featuring the talent of young musicians. The auditions will be Saturday,
April 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WQCS Studios on the Main Campus of Indian River
State College, 3209 Virginia Ave-nue in Fort Pierce. The auditions are the first step to a performance on the station’s locally-produced music special. Students, under the age of
21, can sign up for an audition time on either Saturday. Each performer is allocated a 15-min-ute audition time, presenting a classical, jazz or Broadway music selection, less than four minutes in length. Each performer will be recorded by WQCS during the audition. Solo performances or ensembles
of 5 or less are accepted for a
studio audition. Larger groups must provide a professionally-re-corded CD to be considered. Any audition needing an accompanist must be provided by the music student. A piano is available in the WQCS studios. Recorded ac-companiment is not allowed. A completed program application
requests personal information, the name of the composer and the music selection, and other general information about awards received in music and other school and performance recog-nition. This information will be used for interviews, depending
upon how many students are se-lected for the one-hour special.Students are asked to register
for an audition time by complet-ing an online form on the WQCS home page at www.wqcs.org and emailing the completed form to [email protected] . Please bring a printed copy of the application form to the scheduled audition. Young Musicians Spotlight is
