“This and That”

By Jack Konrad

In June we celebrate Flag Day and fathers day. Fa-therhood basically is a long battle to make a dependent inde-pendent. It is a steady battle to keep the next generation from making the last generation’s mistakes and to change the gen-eration gap into a generation bond. All of us are children, many of us in our time become father, grand fathers and even great-grandfathers. Some of us have the happy occasion to salute or be saluted by another generation along the way, some of us are chips off the old block and some of us are regarded more as splinters. But all of us can join in saluting fatherhood. Cele-brate the joy of knowing that somehow or other we helped to bring up somebody of whom we can be proud, and/or fond; and who is proud of and concerned about us! … Nobody knows who devised the first flag, but there is a myth telling how it happened. Seems that one warrior got hurt in a fight between two tribes and held up his bloody garment to show that he needed help, and everybody followed him. That’s why so many flags are red… Our new elementary school was raising the American flag for the first time. To make the day special, we invited the Marine Corps color guard to come out and perform the duty for us. The day before the ceremony, after giving directions, our secretary asked whether the ser-geant was sending Marines who liked children. After a brief

pause he replied, “Ma’am, if I tell them to like children, they will like children...

In the Elks the proper way to salute the flag is as fol-lows: The hand should be held flat with the thumb hidden

in the palm and placed over the heart. A first grade teacher had her hands full on the first

day of school. At one point she had them recite the Pledge Al-legiance “Stand and place your hand over your heart,” she in-structed. Little Susie stood but put her hand on her backside. “Susie,” the teacher said, “You are supposed to put your hand over your heart.” “But I am,” protested Susie. “No, your heart is in your chest, not back there.” “No it’s not,” Susie explained. “When my grandma comes to my house, she holds me, rocks me, pats me back there and says, ‘Bless your little heart…

Don’t drink and drive. Instead, the next time you get too drunk to drive, walk into a local Dominos and order a pizza. Then when they go to deliver it, ask for a ride home… I don’t like the idea that people can call you in your car. I think there’s news you shouldn’t get at seventy miles and hour. “Pregnant? Whoa!”… I get very unnerved by the way people drive down here. They drive slow and they sit low. The state flag should be just a steering wheel with a hat and two knuck-les on each side of it….

So long for now brothers and sisters, and remember: There are worse things than getting a call for a wrong number at 3 a.m. It could be the right number…
