Partieswith a Purpose

In 1878, the Spanish ship Providencia wrecked off the Florida coast with cargo containing 20,000 coconuts, which were ultimately planted on a stretch of island that came to be known as Palm Beach. Drawing inspiration from this pivotal happening, the Palm Beach Preservation Foundation’s 1878 Series hosts invite-only events that delve into the island’s beginnings. The educational series breaks the mold by hosting its receptions for young supporters at landmarked homes and storied public spaces. Its second event was held at the Little Red Schoolhouse. The evening, sponsored by First Re-public Bank, delivered cuisine influenced by pioneer recipes and Floridian in-gredients, and featured folk music by The Lubben Brothers and conversations

with a schoolmarm in the oldest remaining schoolhouse in southeast Florida. “Going to the Little Red Schoolhouse is somewhat like going to a secret garden,” says Emily Clifford, an 1878 Series committe member. “You drive by it all the time, but you never actually know what it is. Then one night you show up and there are string lights, a folk band is playing, and there is a little lady from 1886 welcoming you. It was really a unique experience.” In educating the younger generation of Palm Beachers about the island’s his-torical presence and roots, those behind the 1878 Series hope that this context will inform the town’s up-and-coming leaders as they continue to grow the community they call home. —Chloe Krammel
